The carriage ride hadn’t been bad considering the fact that Sirius had been flirting with her earlier. Katie thought it was a bit weird how Sirius, James and Peter deliberately took all the seats in the carriage away from Katie and started planning pranks without including Remus. This had meant that he had to sit next to her and converse with her.
Remus didn’t seem to mind however he kept blushing when the carriage would take a turn and his hand would accidently brush her leg. James, Sirius and Peter had noticed his blush and were smirking at him as if they knew something that she didn’t know.
“So what subjects are you taking for OWLS?” Katie asked trying to distract Remus from the Marauders smirks.
“Oh, I’m taking Transfiguration, Defence against the Dark Arts, Charms, Potions and Care of Magical Creatures. What about you? He replied.
“Wow, so am I!” Katie said, surprised.
“Really? I’ll sit next to you then.” Remus replied, excitedly.
Katie smiled at him. It genuinely seemed like he wanted to be friends with her. Knowing this made her look forward to this year.
The carriage had pulled up at Hogwarts and the all got out. Katie was quite close to the edge of the Black Lake. She didn’t realize until a first year had accidentally knocked her into the lake. However, no one knew that she couldn’t swim. She had tried learning but never got the hang of it.
Remus heard the splash and noticed that Katie was no longer by him. He waited for her to come up, but she didn’t and began to worry. He dived into the lake and found thrashing her arms and legs about trying to reach the surface. He wrapped his arm around her waist and dragged her to the top. They were both inhaling air once they reached the surface. Remus pulled Katie onto the lane and climbed out himself.
The first year was shaking after he realized that she could have drowned and was apologizing to her, looking scared that she might hit him.
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t see you.” The first year said to her, looking like he was about to cry.
“Yeah, you should be. She could have died!” Sirius said to the kid.
“S-s-sirius, shut up. H-h-he didn’t m-mean it.” Katie weakly whacked him on the arm whilst shivering from the cold water.
“I-I-It’s okay, it was an a-a-acident.” She said to the kid, smiling.
The first year apologised again and met up with the scared looking kids.
“A-a-are you s-sure you’re alright?” Remus asked her, shivering himself.
“I-I’m fine. I just w-want to get warmed up.” She replied.
Remus pointed his wand at himself and then her, conjuring the drying and heating spell.
“Thank you.” Katie said whilst moving towards him and giving him a big hug.
“Thank you for saving me, my hero.” Katie said in his ear still hugging him.
Remus was shocked that she had hugged him but quickly snapped out of it and wrapped his arms around her.
Over Katie’s shoulder, he could see James, Sirius and Peter smirking at him and then turned around with their arms wrapped around themselves pretending to be snogging someone.
Remus rolled his eyes at them. He hadn’t actually told them that he found Katie attractive and was beginning to get a crush on her. But the guys could easily see through him. He wondered whether Katie would ever like him back, but quickly dismissed the thought after thinking about his ‘furry little problem’.
Katie pulled away from him and smiled.
“Come on, we should head up. I’m starving.” She said.
“Aye, what the woman said!” Shouted Sirius.
They all trudged up towards the castle. Katie wasn’t sure whether they’d want her to sit with them, so she went to sit in her normal place and the end of the table, alone. However, James pulled on her wrist and tugged her back so she could sit with them.
“You’re not running away from us, are you Katie? We’re you’re friends now.” He said to her, smiling kindly.
She smiled back at him and took a place next to Remus.
Professor Mcgonagall went through the sortings of the first years. Then Dumbledore stood up and the hall quietened down.
“All I have to say is..Tuck in!” He said to everyone.
Immediately everyone started putting food onto their plates and talking to their fellow housemates.
After Katie had finished her dinner, she got bored waiting for the others to finish. They were talking about pranks again. Further down the table, there was the boy who had pushed her into the lake. She knew he hadn’t meant it but she decided to have a little pay back. She grabbed some peas, placed them on her spoon and aimed to get them into his goblet of pumpkin juice. As she was getting ready to catapult her fifth pea into his drink, she noticed that the guys had stopped talking. They were all looking at her in amusement and shock.
“Decided you wanted some revenge, did you KittyKat?” Said Sirius, whilst the others snorted.
“Well, I was bored..” she replied. The laughed at this.
“Guys, I think we’ve found a fifth Marauder. She’ll need some training up of course. Help her get to the bigger and better pranks.” Said James. The others nodded their heads, excitedly.
“What do you think, KittyKat? Fancy joining us?” asked Sirius.
I might as well, seeing as they seem to want to be friends with me. Thought Katie.
“Yeah, sure.” She replied, happily.
The others cheered. Katie noticed that Remus seemed to be more happy about it than the others, which made her curious.
Dumbledore had started his speech about the new Defence against the Dark Arts and how no one should enter the Forbidden Forest. Once he had bid goodnight. The Marauders and herself made their way up to Gryffindor tower and into the common room. They all decided they weren’t tired enough to go to bed, so they spent the rest of the evening playing exploding snap.
Katie started to drift off on to Remus’ shoulder. Remus blushed but wrapped is arm around her and gazed at her.
“When are you going to ask her out, Moony?” Said Peter.
“I’m not. She’d never say yes to me.” He replied.
“Mate, she enjoys talking to you and likes being in your company. I’m sure she does or will like you soon enough.” James said, reassuringly.
“Maybe.” Remus replied, doubtfully.
Remus decided he should wake her up due to not wanting her to sleep on the sofa. He doubted he could take her upstairs with him and he'd take the floor, as they’d only met today.
“Katie? Wake up, sleeping beauty.” Remus asked her softly.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to sleep on your shoulder.” Katie blushed once she had woken up.
“It’s okay, I didn’t mind.” He replied.
“Of course he didn’t.” Sirius muttered to the others and they sniggered.
“I’m going to go to bed; I’ll see you guys in the morning.” She waved. She had heard what Sirius had said but it confused her. She decided to forget about it and went to sleep.
