 “Malfoy?”  Hermione hissed at the same time Draco narrowed his eyes and said in his cold and cruel voice, “Granger?”

“I see you two know each other, congratulations on the last name basis.” Said McGonagall; in a warily sarcastic voice. Never had Minerva McGonagall spoken sarcastically in her life. As surprising as it might have been to the two 6th year students, they failed to notice.

“He is Head Boy?” Hermione was the first to break the deathly staring contest as her eyes shot up to McGonagall’s.

“Yes. Now I must-“ But Minerva McGonagall was interrupted. Never had Minerva McGonagall been interrupted. 

“She is Head Girl?” Came the drawling voice of Draco.

“Miss Granger, Mr. Malfoy, I believe it was my turn to speak, but kindly correct me if I am wrong.” The Deputy Headmistress said, exasperated.

Neither Pureblood nor Muggle Born spoke.

“As I was just saying, I must inform you of your duties as Heads of Hogwarts.” At this, McGonagall took to sitting behind her desk, giving a hint that needed no verbal explaining.  The two Heads sat opposite her.

“First of all, it is your job to inform the Perfects of events going on. You are in partially in charge, so you must give them orders.” McGonagall said, feeling she didn’t need to explain what acceptable orders were and weren’t.

Hermione nodded, Draco was still.

“As you might know from previous Head Girls and Boys, you two will share a dorm.

The two Heads both cringed, but held in their rage and disapproval in spite of Professor McGonagall.

“I will inform you any upcoming events and other things that need to be planned as the time comes for them. I must warn you, though I trust you should know this, being a Head is a great responsibility. It must not be taken lightly. I want you to put aside your differences for the school. You will be working together, so there is now need to show dislike outside of your mind. Am I clear?”

Both students nodded simultaneously.

“You are dismissed.”

Hermione was the first one up; she hurried to the door and walked out. She was about to turn to retreat to her compartment when a voice spoke, making her spine chill and anger rise inside her.

“Mudblood, turn around, I have something to say.”

Hermione whipped around, glaring at Draco.

“And why should I care?”

Draco narrowed his eyes.

“If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be standing in front of me…” He smirked, and Hermione’s mouth fell open is disbelief. 

“You’re right, as much as I don’t want to admit it.” With that, Hermione turned once again and headed in the other direction.

“Where are you going?”

Hermione didn’t stop, but she did speak.

“You said that if I didn’t care, I wouldn’t be standing in front of you, listening to you. So I am leaving, because I do not care.”

Draco sighed. “You sure are stubborn. Anyway, I still have something to say. So listen.”

Hermione stopped, slowly breathing out.

“What, Malfoy?”

Draco came up behind her, lowering his voice. His breath tickled Hermione’s ear as he spoke.

“I, for one, don’t wish to argue with you or fight with you. So let’s stay out of each other’s way and pretend the other isn’t there. Sound good?”

Hermione nodded, not hesitating.

“Good.”

With that, Draco walked past her, not looking back.
