If there was one thing Narcissa Black could not tolerate, it was lies. She could not tolerate liars, nor would she. At least, that’s what she’d been telling herself all her life. Now that she was being put to the test, she considered herself rather skeptical.
She rolled over onto her back, and with an irritated wave of her wand, send a sharp, illuminating glow throughout the room, drowning out the darkness. Clutching the mirror that sat transfixed on her bedside table, Narcissa let out a small gasp upon catching sight of her disheveled appearance. Her blonde hair was in disarray, small strands awkwardly sticking out of place. Dark bags haunted the hollow circles of her fair blue eyes, which were now a tinted red from all her tears. Setting the mirror back down in the hopes of escaping her terrifying reflection, she blew her nose, wincing slightly as her tender and sensitive skin throbbed at the touch of the harsh material.
She threw the smothered and overused tissue into the overflowing pile of rags flooding the trash bin. Wiping her eyes, she stood up to go wash her face, but just as the thought entered her mind, the tears returned. For the third time that morning, she collapsed back into bed and burst into quiet sobs, squeezing her new confidant, the tissue box, tightly against her chest.
As far as she was concerned, she wanted to do nothing but mope and grieve all day in the covers of her soft, comforting bed, lost among the sea of endless embracing pillows. After all, her bed was the only article in her life that would never cause her any pain. Instead, it offered coziness, solace, tranquility…things that people tried to destroy. If she could have it her way, she would simply spend the remainder of the school year locked up in her room, with no disruptions or distractions. But the sad truth was that she had more frightening things to face than people…in other words, exams.
How on earth was she to prepare for her N.E.W.T.s in this state of mind? It was, after all, her seventh and final year at Hogwarts, and she was graduating in just a few weeks. But everything was falling apart. Her friends were blessed with nothing but happiness while she suffered miserably for the mistakes of others. How many more times would she have to pay for someone else’s wrong choice? How many more tears would she have to spill in an attempt to satisfy the hole in her heart? It seemed as if all the good she’d ever done had been thrown back into her face, which was now filled with dejection.
Worry. Stress. Anger. Betrayal. Pain. Narcissa Black allowed all these feelings to possess her soul, but the feeling that filled her above all others was the notorious one and only: heartbreak.
