I sat in the library before dinner and read the letter that had arrived that morning.
I was just wondering how many people will be coming to the wedding? Please reply soon. I need to confirm the table seatings.
"Yo, Lils," I said and threw my quill at her.
"Ow!" she exclaimed as the quill hit her in the face, "You should be a chaser, Al."
"Yeah?" I said secretly pleased, "Well, James is trying to recruit me onto his team. Anywho, is your precious Jamesie coming to the wedding or not?"
"Firstly, he is not my 'precious Jamesie'," I rolled my eyes disbelievingly, "And secondly, I have no idea."
"You can't have no idea, Lily! It's been weeks since you asked him! How can you not have had a reply?" I exclaimed.
"It's only been three weeks!" Lily protested, "And besides, we have a silent agreement to pretend that I never asked."
"Well, I made no such agreement," I said and got out of bed, "I'll ask James for you."
"You will not!" Lily shrieked and grabbed my arm, "I'll go ask now." She ran out of the library. I smirked. I knew the threat of asking James for her would freak her out.
"James!" I said and thumped him on his shoulder.
"What the hell was that for?" He groaned and punched me back.
"I dunno," I shrugged back at him.
"Merlin," he complained and rubbed his arm.
"Don't be such a baby," I said.
"So what's happening with you and Lily?" Remus broke in.
"Nothing," James said dejectedly.
"What do you mean 'nothing'?" I said appalled, "James, it's been forever since your Lily flower has asked you."
"Only I'm allowed to call her Lily flower," James growled.
"But seriously mate," I ignored him, "You have waited for the moment that Lily liked you back and it happened two weeks ago but now you can't even be bothered?"
"I don't know...I mean, after I woke up, she just pretended like it never happened. I guess she must have just made a mistake or something," he sighed.
"So, I don't want to go pestering her just in case," he said and stared down onto his piece of parchment.
"Oh you are hopeless," I sighed, "I'm going to look for Rosie."
The hallway was eerily quite as I stepped out behind the Fat Lady.
I hurried down the hallway but stopped when I realised that I had no idea where Rosie was.
Silently thanking Merlin, I reached into my robes and drew out the Marauders Map.
I scanned the map and found that she was sitting in the library.
I started to fold the map back up when my eyes fell on something unusual.
Shoving the map back into my pocket, I sprinted down the corridor.
I must have fallen asleep because the next thing I knew, Madame Pince was shaking my shoulder and telling me to get out of the library.
I gathered my books and check the library clock as I headed back to Gryffindor tower.
It was half past eight.
I pushed open the door to Gryffindor common room to find that it was empty except for Alice, James, Remus and Peter.
"Al!" Alice said, relieved, "Where ion earth have you been?"
"Are Lily and Sirius with you?" James said and tried to peer behind me.
"No, it's just me," I said and saw James' face drop, "What's wrong?"
"Lily and Sirius have been missing and we would know here they are but-" James cut Remus off.
"Sirius went to find you and I've been looking for Lily but we can't find them anywhere."
Remus let out a yelp as James not-so-subtlety jabbed him in the ribs. Alice's head whipped back and forth between Remus and James.
There were definitely hiding something.
"What are you hiding?" I asked suspiciously.
"Nothing!" James and Remus chorused and then looked guiltily at each other.
Hmmm, nothing indeed.
"Anyway, I'm sure Lily's just helping Sirius with work..." I said.
"Al, you and I both know that Sirius does not need help with his classes," James said.
"What are you implying?" My voice suddenly went cold.
"I'm not implying anything, Al," James said, "I just think we need to find them."
"And if you guys can't, how am I supposed to," I said and crossed my arms.
Remus looked at James and glared at him.
"You mean he didn't tell her?" He said to James, his voice straining.
"Well..." James shifted uncomfortably, "I thought he would've."
"Tell me what?" I demanded.
"Nothing," Remus and James chorused together again.
"Tell me!" I protested.
"No," James shook his head.
I rolled over in bed, trying to get comfortable. I'd been trying to sleep but James and Remus' words kept playing through my mind.
What on earth where they talking about? What was Sirius supposed to tell me?
And why the hell was it so important that we find Sirius and Lily.
"Lily!" I exclaimed and sat straight up.
"She's not here, Al," Alice whispered from her bed.
"Sorry," I whispered back, well aware that Mary and Dorcas were sleeping. Although they had treated Lily so badly that I didn't think they deserved any consideration whatsoever. "I just can't sleep."
"Me neither." There was some shuffling from Alice's bed and then the edge of mine sagged.
"What do you think they're hiding?"Alice said from the foot of my bed.
"I don't know," I said while sitting up and drawing the curtains shut, "And where the fuck is Lily?"
"Al..." Alice trailed off and fiddled with her hair.
"You don't think..." She bit her lip.
"Think what?" I said. Alice stayed silent.
"Alice, tell me," I demanded.
"Oh come on, Al," Alice pleaded, "Don't pretend that it hasn't crossed your mind."
"Al, I'm not pretending!"
"Don't you think...hasn't it occurred to you," Alice looked up at me and then quickly looked away.
"Spit it out Alice!"
"That maybe Sirius is cheating on you?"
"Don't be ridiculous, Alice," I snapped, "And anyway, if he was, who would it be with?"
"You can't tell anyone," Lily pleaded.
"Lily, we have to tell someone!" I said back.
We were standing in the cold corridor. Lily sat with her back to the wall. Her red hair hung limply and her mascara ran down her cheeks. I was pacing up and down, not only to keep myself warm, but to help me think about what had just happened.
"Please," Lily begged, "Please don't tell." She pulled her knees up against her chest and started crying.
Oh Merlin, I was not properly equipped to deal with a crying female.
"Lily..." I said quietly, "We have to at least tell James."
"Merlin, no!" She started sobbing even louder.
"He's your boyfriend. He can handle this," I said and crouched down next to her. When she didn't answer, I sat down properly and patted her on the back. She flinched away and the gravity of what just happened sunk in.
"How about Rosie? We could tell her!" I said.
"No no no! Definitely not Al!" Lily said and looked up at me, "We can't tell her!"
"And why not, Lily?" I demanded.
"Do you know how she will look at me if we told her?" Lily said and covered her face with her hands, "She would be so disgusted and horrified and she wouldn't want to be friends. She'd hate me!"
"Lily, don't be ridiculous," I said. My hand twitched to pat her on the back again but last second I pulled away.
I hadn't seen my girlfriend and my best friend for the better part of the day and I was starting too really panic.
You see, life would have been a whole lot easier if Remus and I had the Marauders Map. Unfortunately, it has seemed to have disappeared into thin air. Remus even tried the accio spell but it didn't work.
I sighed and looked up to the roof.
"Hey, Remus?" I called over the bedroom.
"Do you maybe think we should have just asked Al straight out if she knew about the Map?" I asked.
"Mate, I don't know..."
"And do you think all those things she said will come true?"
"Let's hope not."
"I would never have let some dark lord get to my Lily! He would have to kill me first!" I said and waved my wand like I was killing some unseen foe.
"James, have you considered that maybe he did?"
a.n. Sorry for the long wait! But it's a (sort of) long chapter so does it make up for it?
Oh, and what do you think of Sirius and Lily? Is Sirius really cheating on Rosie and is Lily cheating on James (even though they're not together)? Or maybe there's something worse?
Please review, it makes me so happy when people do!
