My opened my eyes slowly, my eyelashes fluttered before me. My eyes were drooped by the blood loss. The sun was in the lower half of the sky. I was alone and in the hospital wing. I exhaled deeply, not sitting up forward. There were hardly any students on the cots next to me. There was only Madam Pomfrey and I. My eyes stretched across the room and fell when I realized that no one was there, waiting for me to wake up. I take the blankets off of my chest and look at my boney arms. The skin basically clung to my bones. I dragged my sleeves of my sweater to cover my arms and searched for my things. They were nowhere to be found.
“Tori? You’re up!” A voice from my right had come out.
I moved my head toward the sound and saw my brother. A faint grin came on my mouth. Draco ran up to me and wrapped his arms around me. I tried as best as I could to breathe as he enveloped me in himself, almost not letting me go. I shuddered at the thought of what pain I had caused him.
“I’m so sorry, Draco.”
“Don’t say that. You hear me? You have nothing to be sorry for. You’d go to him for me,” he whispered as he held my face in his hands. Me looking in his grey eyes made me feel more secure. I managed to make a smile.
He enwrapped me again and almost didn’t let go. He kissed the top of my head and turned when footsteps were heard outside of the hospital wing. I saw two faint shadows coming closer to the entryway. I felt better when I first saw Hermione. She had smiled once she laid her eyes on me, but then she gave a signal to the unidentified person to come forward. As she walked over to me, Fred came running in after her. My breath had left and a smile appeared on my face. As soon as he got to me, he picked me up and swung me around.
“What the hell happened? Hermione told me as soon as you fainted.”
“I don’t know…what happened. I couldn’t control anything. I have no idea what happened to me,” I sighed.
“Sit down, love.”
I watched Draco cringe while I sat down. He didn’t exactly love me dating a Weasley, but I always told him to get over it. I clutched onto both of their arms as I lay back on the cot. I didn’t let go of either of their hands as I got all the way down. Hermione smiled at me and then looked slightly to each of the guys. I watched her come closer to me and leaned over Fred’s shoulder.
“I have to go to class, but I’ll be back to bring you lunch and dinner tonight.”
“I thought I just fainted.”
“Love, you fainted yesterday morning. You’ve been in the hospital wing for a day.”
“What? No, I haven’t,” I said quickly. I sat up and shook my head, repeatedly. I covered my forehead with my hand, causing sweat to fall down my neck. The heat started to overwhelm me and started to hyperventilate.
“Victoria, shh. Come here,” Fred whispered and embraced me. “This reminds me of our first date. You were so scared. Do you remember?”
“I know. I just didn’t know it was that bad. Draco,” I sighed and got up slowly. “I need to get up. I have to go to class.”
“No, you’re staying here. Madam Pomfrey said that you shouldn’t do any sudden movements. I don’t want to take the chance of you fainting again and hitting your head.”
“I hit my head?” It was more like a statement but came out as a question. I put a hand to the back of my head, which was bandaged. “Oh.”
“Tori, I have to go, but Weasley is going to stay with you. I’ll come back to visit soon. Take care of her,” he sternly said, pointing his long index finger at Fred.
“I always do, don’t I?” He retorts in a comical manner, but I know the true meaning behind his tone.
Draco held onto my hand before letting go as he went to class. I tried to smile, but failed in the process with my face hurting. But Draco took it as a smile and left. As he went, I looked over Fred. He was watching me like when we were in school together. I loved him. I took his hand and interlocked my fingers into his. He pulled up a chair and put his elbows onto the sheet. I made a weak smirk and his hand grazed against my cheek. His face was close to mine. I could feel his hot breath on my face.
“You know, you’re beautiful. I wouldn’t want you any other way. Do you know that, Victoria?”
“Fred, you’re acting as if I were dying. But I’m not.”
“I know that, but what happened to you yesterday wasn’t just a coincidence. You know what’s tonight. It should have happened yesterday, but it didn’t. Victoria…”
“I know,” I interrupted him. “Trust me, Freddie, I know. I’m worried about it. But you shouldn’t. I’m not your problem.”
“You actually are, love. You’re my life.”
“Stop, don’t say things like that. I know you love me, I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Before we could say any more, footsteps were heard and we both turned. Harry turned around the corner, his face lightened up when he saw Fred and me. Fred stood to greet Harry with a handshake.
“Harry,” I rose my soft voice.
“Victoria, are you okay? I heard just now. I’m sorry that I didn’t realize that you weren’t there.”
“Oh Harry. You have such a way with words,” I said flatly.
“Yeah. Fred, have you seen Ron?” He looked over to him.
“No, just got here an hour or so ago.” He didn’t keep eye contact with him, mostly with the floor or with me. I stared at him, just to make sure he felt stable.
“I understand, but I think that Ron would like to see you, along with Ginny.”
“Harry,” I started with my jaw clenched.
“No, love, he’s right. If I’m here, I should see them. I will be back, Victoria. Don’t get up or any sudden movements.”
“Fine,” I sighed. Before Fred left, he kissed me on the lips softly and ran out of the hospital wing. The lasting warmth faded off of my lips, bringing me back to reality.
“How are you feeling, Victoria?”
“I’m…better than I was before. Trust me on that one Harry. It was painful and I mean painful.”
I lay down, causing the pillow to cover my eyes. The coolness of the pillow caused my forehead of sweat start to dry. I put my hand on the chain around my neck as it followed it down to the wolf that Remus gave me. I stared off into the distance and Harry tried to stop me. He’d do everything; he just didn’t want me to die all of a sudden. It made me laugh from time to time. I was on watch by my friends, but they thought I didn’t know.
“Harry, you can leave. I won’t go mad because I wasn’t being watched every single minute of every single hour. Besides, don’t you classes today? You really should go.”
“No need to worry about classes, Dumbledore assigned me to watch after you today. He excused me from classes, which was great because I didn’t do the Defense Against Dark Arts essay.”
I rolled my eyes and guided them back to Harry’s. Of course, he’d only visit me when he was able to skip classes. I took out my wand and Harry stopped. He stared at it for a while, which began to worry me.
“What’s your wand made out of?”
“What’s the matter?”
“Nothing, never mind.”
I had a confused face, but ignored Harry and safely put my wand back in my bag. He tapped his foot, up and down, up and down. I had noticed this before, but didn’t mention it. He was hyper.
“Harry, you don’t want to be here, do you?”
“What? Of course I do. Why would you think that?”
I finally had his attention and I was going to take advantage of that fact. “Then why are you jumping like a chocolate frog ripped from the package?” He didn’t answer. So what did I do? I kicked him in the leg, making him jolt out of his seat.
“Harry, I want you to answer me.”
“I just…Dumbledore wants me to do something. It’s complicated. I can’t really tell you.”
“You kind of just did, Harry.”
I shut him up around there. He stayed silent for a while, making anyone who came in to the nursery wing uncomfortable, along with the both of us. It was a sight to see. The Boy Who Lived visited the other Malfoy. It was a big deal…for everyone else. The tension weakened as other people came to visit me. One of those people was Dean Thomas, who had been dating Ginny at the time. As soon as Dean had come in, Harry had moved out of the way, trying not to cause any more awkwardness. If that was possible.
“Dean,” I smiled.
He leaned over me and patted my back. He made a slight nod to Harry. Harry had left by the time I looked over to him. My cold gaze warmed as Dean sat down. I made a weak smile because Dean knew what I was thinking.
“Go, before he is really gone.”
I ran out of my bed, the hard and cold concrete stimulating my bare feet. Turning each corner, I had lost him. My hot breath wasn’t enough to keep me warm. I shuddered as I ran farther from the nursery wing. Heavy breathing was all that filled my ears. Too bad, then I would have heard somebody following me. As I stopped, I took in some large breaths. I turned around and BAM! There was my boyfriend.
“Fred! You just gave me a bloody heart attack!” I clutched my robes.
“Victoria! What are you doing out of bed?”
I didn’t answer. My breath basically left my mouth and made me fall. Catching me in the nick of time, Fred picked me up. With one of his hands underneath my legs, his other was supporting my head. His warm hand felt fantastic on my neck. My head was leaning on his chest, hearing his heartbeat.
Then, I heard a voice. Someone’s who was very familiar and then I knew who it was.
“What did you do?”
“Stop,” I said weakly.
“Weasley, I don’t want you to be hurting my sister.”
“I’m glad we agree on that point, but guess what, Malfoy? I’m not hurting her. I was just taking her back to the hospital wing, but someone interrupted us.”
“Stop it, you two.”
But they went on without me. As they kept throwing insults at each other, my eyes followed the both of them. Being tired from everything that was going on, I slapped the both of them in the face. With expressions of shock on their faces, they both turned to me. My face was red with anger.
“Stop it! I am fine! Just forget about me, go on with your lives. Fred, go back to the shop and be with George,” I screamed as I ran to the hospital wing.
Once there, I gathered my stuff. Fred was following me, talking about how he was sorry. Draco had left because he knew that I’d be better off alone. He was a smart one, he was. I kept shaking my head, trying to get Fred’s voice out of my head. As soon as I had everything in my bag, I started running, hoping to get rid of Fred. As I dodged everybody in the halls, I got outside and stood in front of the Whomping Willow. Fred tried to put his arms around me, trying to calm me down. But it wasn’t working.
“Please, let go of me!” I shrieked, loud enough for the heavens to hear me. I struggled from his grasp and screamed. He let go of me as I gripped to the grass. I shuddered and swallowed my tears.
“Can’t you see what this is doing to me? You never should have come at time like this!”
“Love,” he began, putting a hand on my back. “You can’t control…this.”
“No, I’m not going.”
“GO AWAY, FRED!” I inhaled. “I can’t have you here, knowing that something is wrong with me! I need you to leave.”
Fred did nothing, but after a few moments, he left. I could hear the grass crinkle as he walked away. As soon as he was gone, I laid down on my back as started to cry. The thing that made the day even better, the one of the Whomping Willow’s branches wrapped itself around me and threw me into the small burrow that lead to the Shrieking Shack.
