I walked down the alley ways to get to all the shops. I couldn’t help notice the sun shining brightly against my skin. It felt great to be outside.
There were a lot of witches and wizards strolling Diagon Alley today. I could see little kids running to get their Hogwarts supplies with their parents. They looked so happy.
I sighed. Time really flew fast. I could clearly remember the first time I had walked through those doors, all those happy times I had with my friends.
After seventh year Harry and Ginny got married. Ron, Ginny and Harry then disowned me later, for having a relationship with Draco. Yes, Draco Malfoy. It’s been almost two years since I’ve seen him. I heard about him all the time but never met him. What we had was pure and strong. He left me to save me and he left me with Altaira, my one year old daughter.
Altaira Rose Malfoy was mine and Draco’s daughter. She inherited his light-coloured hair and his grey storm eyes, his lovely smile and his strange sense of humour. Every time I look at her, I remember him and every time I remember him, I remember his sacrifice.
Flashback- Two years ago
I was sitting in my apartment waiting for Draco to arrive. We were going to celebrate our second year anniversary.
I was waiting, until Draco barged through our apartment door and ran towards me. “You have to leave Hermione!” Draco yelled at me with tears falling down his cheek.
“What happened Draco?” I grabbed his arm and demanded.
“He’ll kill you if you’re with me.” He fell to the ground with his head in his hands.
“He sent all the deatheaters after you Hermione. If I don’t marry Ashton, he’ll kill you.” I stared blankly back at him. “Hermione, please. He’s already looking for you!” He held me face firmly and kissed me tenderly and forcefully as if it was the last time.
“I’ll just die without you.” I whispered and looked at him through his eyes.
“NO! Move from here and stay safe for me!” he pressed his forehead against mine and closed his eyelids. “Please Hermione, for me, for us!”
I held him in my arms and sat there crying. “I love you Hermione” he whispered against my ear.
He had never said that to me so meaningly. It just made me cry harder. “I love you too Draco” he held me tighter.
“Don’t forget me. Ok and remember that I Draco Malfoy only love you no matter what happens!”
“I love you, so much Draco” my voice cracked again.
“Look at these two lovebirds. I can’t believe after all my teachings that you are actually hugging a filthy mudblood like her.” I turned around to see Lucius and his deatheaters standing at the door.
Draco stepped in front of me and blocked me. “Leave her alone. I’ll marry Ashton, I’ll do whatever you want.” Draco growled back at his father.
“That you will and have no choice of, but for now she needs to be taught a lesson, to stay away from people much higher than her.” He held his wand towards us and smirked. Draco immediately tensed up.
“You’ll have to get through me!” he shouted.
“My pleasure!” Lucius sneered back. “Crucio!”
I used all my strength and pushed Draco out of the way. The spell came hitting right through my chest.
I screamed in pain. It was the Cruciatus curse, the most pain fullest spell. It was like a hundred pins stabbing into me.
I could her Draco screaming. “Hermione! NO, stop it! You’re going to kill her!”
I knew the spell had stopped when all the pain was released. I sat on the floor with Draco holding me. “Harry! Now!” I opened my eyelids and saw Harry running towards us while casting spells at the deatheaters. “Take her and leave!” Draco had got up and started shooting spells at them too.
“No!” But it was too late. Harry had grabbed me and apparated. I was left with Draco whispering ‘I love you’
I took my surrounding and realised i was at a muggle village. “How could you Harry!” I screamed.
“I followed orders Hermione and it was what’s best for you.” He whispered in my ear.
I broke down with Harry catching me. “Hermione, you’ll have to forget him.” I stared at Harry in shock. Forget him!
“You try forgetting Ginny Harry then maybe I will.” I scoffed at him.
I sat there and held my tummy. It was aching and hurting. Before I knew it I had threw up on Harry.
“Hermione!” he screamed. ”I need to take you to St Mungos now!”
End of Flashback
That was the day I found out that I was carrying Draco’s child.
It took me a whole year to stop myself from crying about Draco. I heard all the news about him getting married and all but I never did look at one. These days, Altaira keeps me going.
Harry and Ginny were worried about me. They wanted to stay over and help me but I insisted for them to go home.
But I loved my life now. Every morning I would wake up, go to work and have time for myself. I knew I was missing something, like a life partner but I never really met anyone. I knew that Altaira would want a father someday but I couldn’t. I was Draco’s and he was mine.
I told Altaira that Draco was her father. She always would smile then touch his photo.
“Mom!” I broke out of my thoughts and smiled down to see Altaira holding her hands out to me. I carried her up and supported her on my hip. She clutched her book to her chest.
“Hey sweetie” I kissed her forehead. “Come let’s go shopping for a while.” I set her on her feet and held her hand. She went to this school in Diagon Alley.
I watched her walk clumsily down the alley, and fall right on her bottom. “Here, do you want mummy to hold you?” I asked.
She grinned and nodded her head. I pulled her up and pushed her hair off her eyes.
Just as we were about to move on, I heard a cry. I looked around to see a small boy crying. He looked a year younger than Altaira but had the same golden hair as her. He was deserted in the middle of a crowd of people.
I walked slowly up to the boy. “Are you lost honey?” The boy looked up and nodded. He had tears smudged all over his cheek. I stared at the child, his eyes were that same familiar stormy, grey eyes. “W-what’s your name?”
“Sc-Scorpious” he slowly moved his hands from his face. I gasped. No! It couldn’t be his child. We did think of that name together, we said that if we had a girl, she would be named Altaira and if a boy…
“Well, isn’t that a cute name” I saw him smile at me. “Come on let’s find your mummy” I held his hand.
“I don’t have a mummy!” he sniffled and coughed.
“What about your daddy? Is he here?” I asked softly. Poor boy didn’t have a mum.
“Y-yes. I saw im ere and though I wuld be able to fid him.” I smiled at how he spoke.
“Don’t worry, we’ll find him. Meet Twinkle.” I let Altaira down and placed her hand in Scorpio’s hand.
“Hi, Twinkle” he shook her hand and smiled. Altaira waved back and hid under my hair.
“Anyone want ice-cream?” I asked. I didn’t even know this boy but already felt so close to him.
“I do! I do!” they both screamed. I laughed and took Scorpio’s hand by one and Altaira’s by the other.
They stood with their hands plastered on the glass widow, deciding which colour they wanted. “Scorpios, are you allowed ice-cream?”
“Yes, daddy would buy for me.” his smile flattened.
“We’ll look for him ok. I’m sure he’s somewhere here looking for his son.” I assured the child. They both choose their ice-cream and licked it while I paid.
I turned around and saw them pointing at the pet shop. “Can we go there mommy? Please.” Altaira begged.
“Pretty please mam.” Scorpios added. Draco really brought him up well.
“Sure.” I waited outside while they went inside. I could hear them laughing.
I watched the happy couples pass by and them with their children and felt a pang of jealously. “Where’s Altaira?” I looked down and saw Scorpious. “Wasn’t she with you?” I asked worriedly.
“She said she was going to find you.” He said. I picked up Scorpious and walked into the pet shop to find Altaira.
“Altaira” I called, but received no answer. I went outside and checked the shops but she wasn’t there. “Altaira!”
I took deep breaths and ignored the tear that rolled down my cheek. I lost Altaira! My daughter’s missing. I’m such a horrible mother, leaving her out of my sight.
“Don’t cry” Scorpios whispered while wiping my tear with his hand. “I’m so sorry. I should have followed her.” I gave him a small smile.
“It’s not your fault sweetie we’ll find her and your father. Ok.” He nodded and swiped the tear away from his cheek.
Calm down. He’s probably around here with someone safe. Safe! Scorpious is safe.
I ran my fingers through my messed up hair. I am such a horrible father! Searching around for any sight of my son. He must be so scared.
I glanced around and caught sight of a young kid, one or two years older than Scorpious. She was crying and calling out to her mommy.
I guess I’m not the only horrible parent.
I walked up to the girl and bent down to her height. “Hey honey, are you lost?”
She gasped at me and wiped her tears away nodding. I swear I saw her smile.
“Where did you last see your mummy and Daddy?” I asked. Her smile flattened and eyes lowered.
“At the pet shop. Scorpious and I were looking around when I left.” My face hardened.
“Who’s Scorpious?” I asked. Of course I knew that was my son.
“We found him crying, he lost his father. My mummy took him and is trying to find his father.” Thank god he’s safe. “We bought ice-cream for him too.” At least he’s safe.
“What’s your name honey?” she clutched her book to her chest and made me smile. She reminded me of her.
“Altaira.” My eyes widened. No. not possible!
“And your mother’s name is.” I croaked.
“Hermione” she whispered softly. My heart literally felt like it smashed against a wall, breaking into a thousand pieces.
She has a child. Hermione is married. The tiny hope in my heart faded away, hope that we would be together.
“Are you okay?” I glanced at Altaira, who was staring at me.
“Yeah, let’s find your mum.” How can I face her, after all these years?
I walked around searching for Hermione. I didn’t man to be nosey but I had to get some answers. ”So, do you like your dad?” I asked kindly.
“Yes, I love him.” She smiled cheekily and wrapped an arm around my neck.
“I’m assuming you got his hair.”
“Yep, the blond is from my daddy but the curls are from mummy.” My heart felt swallowed. “Mummy says I have his cheeky behaviour and his smile.”
“Does you’re mummy love him.” Stupid question to ask a kid but I had to. She giggled and smiled.
“She loves him more than anything else in the world.” I didn’t want to hear it anymore. “I know you.” My head snapped to face her. “Mum told me about you, how you and she hated each other in Hogwarts. That you were enemies.” She grinned sheepishly.
“Did she say anything else?” I felt anger boil through me and a pang of jealously.
“Nope” that’s what she said. “Am I wrong?” she was definitely her child. Interrogating me and putting the pieces together was so Hermione.
“Well, I wouldn’t say hate. We left on good terms.” I muttered. Before she could say anything I changed the topic. “How about we find your mother?” I stated.
She beamed and pointed behind me. “There she is.” My body froze the moment she said those words. “She’s with Scorpius. I don’t think she can see us from here.” My grip on Altaira tightened as I turned around. Squinting through the crowd I managed to spot her. She changed; she looked so fragile and skinny. Her hair grew softer and tamer. I could hear he soft laughter through the deafening crowd. She was nervous.
She had Scorpius pinned to her chest, holding him protectively. I stared at my son who seemed so calm there between her arms. He would normally resist anyone carrying him, except for me of course.
Altaira’s squeal broke me from my thoughts. She was waving her arms. I gently placed her on her feet and watched her run towards the crowd.
“Hey Altaira, you might get lost again.” I squeezed through the crowd, following her high pitched laughter.
People threw me strange looks and pushed me out of the way. I found my way through people and lifted Altaira from her feet. “Don’t do that. I almost had a heart attack.” I heaved loudly, holding her against my chest.
“Malfoy.” the faintest whisper reached my ear, making my head snap up. There stood Hermione, right in front of me, beautiful as ever. We stood there glancing at each other.
”Hermione.” I breathed after a long minute. I stopped making a fool out of myself and decided to let Altaira down. “Your child I presume.”
She nodded and kneeled down to hug Altaira. Scopius even hugged her. “You scared us Altaira.” Scorpius informed while I stood there like a complete idiot.
Finally Scorpius looked up and ran towards me with his arms out wide. “Daddy!” I lifted him above my head and kissed his tiny forehead.
“Do you know what you put me through Scorpius?” I scolded.
“I’m sorry.” I smiled and tickled him. “Daddy, this is my friend Altaira.” I faced Altaira and Hermione who was busy staring at her shoes.
I stepped towards her, grabbing her attention. Her eyes glanced up at me and locked with mine. “Thank you for taking care of Scorpius.” I said smoothly. “I hope he didn’t misbehave.”
Her eyes averted to my son and then back at me. “No. He was perfect.” I smiled. “I mean, he… you really brought him up well, Malfoy.” She didn’t hide he disappointment very well. I could see it like an open book. “Thank you for helping Altaira. I hope she didn’t ask to many questions.”
“Well she definitely got her traits from her mother.” He grinned and chuckled. I relaxed more.
“Actually, she has picked up a lot of her father’s traits. The mischief and he’s Slytherin side…” she left off.
“So he went to Hogwarts.” I asked slowly, trying to keep my jealously from showing.
“Yes.” She whispered.
“Well, I should congratulate you for your marriage. I never got to come.” I would have probably ripped the invitation into shreds.
“Mummy isn’t married.” Altaira informed.
I felt my body stiffen and looked at Hermione who was whispering to Altaira. “You aren-aren’t married?” I stuttered.
I stared into her honey brown eyes and let myself melt. But before she could answer, I had placed the puzzles into its missing places.
Altaira father was Slytherin, mishchief, cheeky and she inherited his blonde hair. It was me. I am Altaira father. It fits perfectly.
“You didn’t tell me?” I whispered. She frowned, not knowing what I was on about. But as it was Hermione, she figured what I was on about.
“How could I.” her eyes were now watery. “You made it fairly clear that I was to stay away from you.” She croaked. “You and Harry both made that pretty clear.”
“I love her.”
“You don’t even know her.” She cried.
“I loved her the moment I found out she was your child. She’s my daughter Hermione.” I yelled.
“So. What do you want?”
“A family. A proper family. You.” I moved forward and caressed her cheek.
She flinched and stepped back. “I can’t Draco.” My heart skipped a beat. “You have a wife and…”
“As soon as my father went to jail I divorced her. She treated Scopius like dirt. All she ever cared about was money. I gave that to her and she left immediately. She never cared about us.” I explained. “I never stopped loving you Hermione. There hasn’t been a single day that you weren’t in my mind.” I placed Scorpius down and wrapped my arms around her waist.
She shook her head and pulled away. “I’m sorry. I don’t…” before she could finish I pressed my lip against her warm soft lip and gently kissed her. I felt her arm tangle between my hair and smiled against her lips.
“Tell me that you didn’t feel anything and I’ll leave.” She closed her eyes and breathed.
“Draco, I went through a lot. I only just got over you. I don’t want to get hurt again.” She whispered. My body stiffened. I had put her through so much pain. “But I love you so much.” I leaned my forehead against hers.
“I love you too and I promise you that I will never leave you again. We’ll be together and work things out. I want to love you, be with you, live with you, Scorpius and Altaira. I can’t imagine anything else I could ever want. I’ve never forgotten the memories we’ve had and. I want to wake up to you every morning, and go to sleep with you every night. I want to grow old with you and die with you right next to me. I just want a happy life and I know I can have one, as long as you’re in it.” I took a deep breath as I saw that her face grew pal. “Hermione, will you do me the greatest honour by being my wife?”
I waited slightly and watched tears fall on her cheek. “Draco…” she looked at Altaira and Scoripius. I loosened my grip and lowered my eyes. “Yes.”
“Wait what?” I asked.
“Yes, I will marry you.” I grinned and kissed her passionately. Our lips met with a soft touch and I melted against her. I placed my hand on her back, while she wrapped her arms around my neck.
We broke apart panting. “Well” we looked down to see Scopius and Altaira smiling at us. “Can we head home now, Daddy.” I lifter Altaira and kissed her on her cheek.
Scorpius looked at Hermione and grinned cheekily. “I guess you are my mummy.” Hermione laughed and hugged Scorpios. I took one hand of hers and rubbed it gently. She smiled at me and held on. She closed our eyes and apparated with me. We were going home. Home sweet home.
