“Every age has its happiness and troubles.”
To say that my first patrol with Rose didn’t go well would have been putting it too lightly. It was an absolute disaster. The girl completely ignored me for most of the night. I talked, I teased, I flirted; but no matter what I did, she refused to acknowledge me. She maintained a stony expression on her face as we walked down corridor after corridor and didn’t even flinch when I started making snide remarks about her. A muscle in her jaw twitched when I mentioned her family, however.
By the time we were almost done patrolling the castle, I was in such a state of confusion, it wasn’t even funny. I had never been ignored by a female for such a long period of time. About thirty minutes into our patrol, I had even resorted to the desperate measure of complimenting her. She stalked off without saying goodbye when the night ended.
I lay awake in my dorm that night, staring at the moonlight spilling in through the windows and listening to a chorus of snores. I thought about what I could have possibly done wrong. Why had Weasley been so cold towards me? I had never talked or paid much attention to Rose before, so if she had acted this way towards me previously, I never noticed. She should have been blown away by my absurd charm and naturally good looks. She should have been tripping over her feet every time I said her name. She should have been blushing at the mere sound of my voice.
That was what I was used to, anyway.
Instead, Rose treated me like no other girl had ever treated me before. She ignored me. She bloody ignored me! Why did I care so much? I already knew the answer to that question. I was used to getting what I wanted, when I wanted it. If I wanted a new broomstick, I was going to get a new broomstick. And if I wanted a girl to flirt with me, she was going to flirt with me. If I didn’t get what I requested, I always needed an explanation.
Call me spoiled. Call me a brat. Call me whatever you want to call me. But being spoiled arses are what Malfoy’s do best. Spoiled, good-looking arses.
I finally decided that Rose was merely trying to play hard to get before settling into a troubled sleep. I had a very odd dream that night. Mary Claire was chasing me down a dark corridor, her crimson nails raking down my back as she attempted to grab hold of my robes. I rounded the corner to find Titus, Alex, and Dante blocking my path. They were all dressed in absurd looking robes and playing the bagpipes. A bit random, yes, but it did give me a good laugh when I awoke.
The next morning, I lamented to Dante about my miserable patrol experience. “Rose only said about ten words to me the whole night.” I complained. “She didn’t even do anything when I started flirting with her!”
“Sorry, mate. But it doesn’t sound like she likes you very much.” Dante fixed his green and silver tie and glanced at his reflection in the mirror in our dormitory.
“Of course she likes me!” I said loudly. “Everybody likes me!”
“Who likes you?” Mary Claire had snuck into the room somehow, as silent as a ninja.
“Mary Claire!” I cried. “What happened yesterday? I didn’t see you at all!”
“Answer my question and I’ll answer yours.” She crossed her arms and gave me a stubborn look.
I sighed. “No one likes me. My patrol with Weasley just didn’t go too well yester-”
“Well Professor Pemblerton gave me bloody detention! For a whole week! He gave me this long lecture about some crap and now I’ve got to clean the hospital beds. Without magic!” Mary Claire finished her rant with a dramatic huff and sat down in my lap. I winced as her bony bum slammed down onto my crotch area.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes in annoyance. I was getting tired of the constant interruptions and invasions of personal space. Maybe Mary Claire and I needed to take some time away from each other. Again. Just for a little while.
Before I got the chance to say anything, she grabbed my face and began snogging me furiously.
That put my mind off the whole “time away from each other” thing.
We strode into the Great Hall hand in hand. Whispers followed us as we walked to our usual spot at the end of the Slytherin table. Apparently, no one had forgotten about the whole cat-fight Mary Claire had had with Emmeline yesterday.
I stole a glance at the Gryffindor table while everyone else was joking around about Dante’s odd book-obsession. Weasley was sitting in between her younger brother and Lysander Scamander. Her brother (I think his name is Herbert or something) was stuffing his face with bacon and eggs. Weasley was reprimanding him with a stern look on her face. I scrutinized her closely, trying to figure her out. I could usually read females like a map. Scamander put an arm around her and whispered something in her ear.
Weasley turned around and caught my gaze. I looked away quickly before mentally kicking myself in the head. I should have winked and waved or done something. Now it looked like I was secretly stalking her. Rose stared at me for another second or two, as if waiting for me to whip out a pair of binoculars.
Alex was staring at me expectantly. I knew I had missed something, for everyone’s eyes at the table were trained on me. He sighed in exasperation. “Merlin, you’ve been really out of it lately. Are the Quidditch team tryouts tomorrow?”
“Oh, yeah.” I felt Mary Claire grab my hand and had the desperate urge to yank it away. “At seven.”
“Post’s here.” Bella said calmly, pausing in the act of running her fingers through Titus’s hair as a cloud of owls flew through the windows of the Great Hall. There was a flurry of wings around us as the Daily Prophet dropped into Dante’s outstretched hands. “Why do you read that thing?” Claire asked with a sneer as Dante quickly unrolled the newspaper. “It’s so dull.”
My heart jumped in shock as a package fell directly onto my head and landed on my lap. Apollo screeched loudly at me before soaring away. “Bloody owl...” I mumbled as I grabbed the package. The familiar handwriting on it made me groan. Oh Merlin, do not tell me she wrote me another letter. It’s the second day! She can’t miss me that much, can she?
“Is that another letter from your mum, babe?” Mary Claire wrinkled her nose in apparent disgust. “Ugh, parents. They can be so embarrassing.”
“She just misses me, that’s all.” I said defensively, holding the package to my chest. She rolled her eyes and returned to her magazine. Titus looked in our direction hopefully as he heard me raise my voice, and I instinctively slung an arm around Mary Claire. If he wanted my girlfriend, he was going to have to fight me for her.
“Now, I want you all to get into pairs and practice the Shield Charm.” Professor Belgoney said, catching my eye and smiling widely. There was the dull scraping sound of chairs being pushed back as students leaped up to find a partner. I immediately looked at Dante, who nodded back at me and pulled out his wand. “Ready?”
“Mr. Malfoy, come here please.”
Professor Belgoney beckoned me towards him and clapped a large hand on my shoulder. “Well Scorpius, since you are one of the top students in my class, you’ll be paired up with Ms.Weasley today.”
I gaped at him. “What?!”
“Yes, yes.” He waved his hand in the air. “I want you two to practice the spell, and then demonstrate it to the class. You’re alright with that, I hope?”
“Good.” Professor Belgoney steered a very cross looking Rose towards me and strode away without a backwards glance. I extracted my wand from my robes and flicked a speck of dust off of it before surveying her casually.
“You ready then, Weasley?”
She nodded and tightened her grip on her wand. “Expelliarmus!” I said with a flick of my wand, saying the first spell that came to mind.
My spell bounced off the invisible shield that Rose had conjured and I ducked as it flew over my head. “Not bad.” I said calmly. “But this spell is so rudimentary, even you should have no problem figuring it out.”
“You could do it perfectly with your hands tied behind your back, no doubt.” she hissed in annoyance. I smirked my signature smirk and cast a perfect shield charm at a stray jinx that had rebounded from another group.
Rose glared at me before crying out suddenly. “Petrifus Totalus!” I was caught by surprise by the jet of light zooming through the air towards me, but managed to deflect it. “Feisty, are we?” I put on my most convincing bored expression. “You can’t beat me in this class Weasley, so there’s no need to try.”
The look she gave me was fierce enough to melt my Potions cauldron into a charred, shapeless lump. I raised my eyebrows in response and tilted my head to the side. What was her problem? The whole “hatred” act she was putting on seemed all too real. I saw her blue eyes flicker dangerously and raised my wand just in time.
The spells ricocheted off each other and we both ducked instinctively. I was back on my feet in an instant.
Rose deflected it easily with a wave of her wand and fought back. “Stupefy!” I dodged out of the way before sending another hex at her.
I realized that the situation had turned into a full blown duel. The rest of the class was shrieking as spells were cast in all directions, rebounding off walls and shattering windows. A thin, gray layer of smoke had settled onto the classroom as Rose and I advanced on each other, waving our wands wildly. Her face was flushed; her blue eyes bright and flashing.
Everything in the room had faded but Rose and I. I was completely concentrated on dodging her spells and casting my own. I was dimly aware of the faint sound of shouts and whoops in the back of my mind, but paid them no attention. Suddenly, I felt something shoving me backwards. A dark shadow fell over me and blocked my view of Rose. I ducked around it and aimed my wand in her general direction.
A loud cry confirmed that I had hit my target. Rose’s legs jerked spasmodically and she collapsed onto the ground. I let out a burst of laughter as her legs continued to do a wild, crazed dance. The shadow snatched my wand out of my hand. “Mr.Malfoy!” it growled. “That is quite enough!”
Professor Belgoney stood in front of me, looking furious. Rose’s freak show cousin, Albus, was kneeling beside her, gently assuring her that the jinx’s effects would soon wear off. He leaped up and faced me with his fists clenched.
“What the hell is wrong with you, Malfoy?!”
I felt my breathing began to slow back to its normal pace as my adrenaline rush ended. Professor Belgoney still had a hand on my chest, and he glanced at me to make sure I wasn’t going to start casting jinxes like a madman again before giving me a gentle shove and running over to attend to Rose. Dante strode hesitantly towards me, pushing his way through the circle of onlookers.
“What happened, Scorp?” he asked in a whisper. “I was practicing with Chris, and suddenly we just hear you two screaming hexes at each other. You really destroyed the classroom.”
“She bloody attacked me!’’ I hissed, sweeping my eyes around the room. Dante was right, we had destroyed it. Three of the windows were shattered, littering the floor with shards of glass. The portraits of famous Aurors hanging on the walls were all grumbling and attempting to straighten their robes and hats. A Reductor curse had blasted a hole right through one of them. There were several burn marks on Professor Belgoney’s desk, staining the handsome mahogany wood. Many glass containers on the bookshelf behind the desk had shattered and were spewing a mysterious, blue colored smoke.
The effects of my poorly cast Tantellegra curse had unfortunately worn off my lovely red-haired friend. Rose straightened up with an attempted air of haughtiness and thanked the Professor profusely. I could see right through her little act, though. She was blushing so hard; you could barely see her field of freckles under the haze of scarlet painted across her cheeks. Rose pierced me with another one of her icy glowers and seemed to want to have another go at me.
“Class is dismissed.” Professor Belgoney said loudly. “Weasley, Malfoy, you stay behind. I want a word with you.” The rest of the students filed out the door reluctantly. Many stalled and lagged behind on purpose. This was undoubtedly the most exciting thing that had ever occurred in Defence against the Dark Arts. Professor Belgoney shooed them out before shutting the door and turning to the pair of us.
“Have a seat.”
Belgoney conjured up two chairs out of nowhere and gestured towards them. We both sat down. I could see Rose trembling pathetically from head to toe. This is probably her first time getting in such trouble, I thought gleefully. The professor folded his hands in front of him and gave us questioning stares.
“Will either of you please inform me what happened just then?”
“Weasley provoked me, sir.” I said automatically. “I was just practicing with her, sir, and she started going mad. She tried to hex me.” I made sure to put on my most convincing innocent face, with puppy dog eyes and everything.
Rose let out a sort of strangled sound in protest.
“I see.” Professor Belgoney said. “And so you, like any sensible person, fought back, even after the professor arrived to resolve the whole matter.” His voice was laced with sarcasm. I bit my tongue to keep from retorting back.
“S-sir...” Rose said, her voice shaking. “Erm...”
“I am utterly ashamed of both of you.” Professor Belgoney said, interrupting her feeble attempt at speaking. “You two are the top students in my class. I expected you to set an example for the others.”
Weasley hung her head in disgrace, which almost made me laugh out loud. Honestly, this girl was taking everything much too seriously. Belgoney was one of the nicer professors. He would probably let us off with a long lecture or a day or two of detention. Nothing major.
“I hope you both agree that a week of detention would be an appropriate punishment? Starting tomorrow, at seven P.M?”
“Seven P.M?!” I sat up abruptly. “I’ve got Quidditch tryouts for the next couple of days! I can’t miss them!”
“And we’ve got prefect patrol!” Rose added in a shrill voice.
I could have strangled her.
“Well, I cannot allow you to neglect your prefect duties. But as for your Quidditch tryouts, Mr.Malfoy, I’m afraid you will simply have to miss them.” Professor Belgoney nodded at me and unclasped his hands.
I felt my body slowly turn numb. Miss Quidditch tryouts?! Ethan would kill me! “But, sir.” I protested. “I-I can’t miss Quidditch tryouts! The team needs me, I’m their Keeper!”
“Perhaps you should have thought of that before you decided to get yourself into this situation, Mr.Malfoy.” Professor Belgoney stood up and wiped his glasses on his robes. “You are both dismissed.”
I stared at him with my mouth hanging open. The situation had definitely just taken an ugly turn. Professor Belgoney raised his eyebrows, as if daring me to say another word. I was so consumed with rage, I could not think straight. Ethan would never forgive me if I didn’t show up for tryouts. And a whole week of blasted detention! This was all Rose’s fault, all her bloody fault!
I stood up abruptly, purposely scraping my chair across the floor. It emitted a loud screeching sound before I nearly flung it away from me. I stalked out of the classroom, dimly aware of Rose getting up and stumbling after me.
The corridor was empty, thank Merlin. I didn’t want to accidentally bump into Ethan and explain my dilemma. He would have been very understanding, I’m sure.
I was in an extremely bad mood for the rest of the day. I managed to relieve some of my anger by dangling a red faced Louis Weasley in the air by his underpants while he was hurrying to the Great Hall for dinner. The act was undetected by any teachers, and gave the Slytherins a good laugh, which cheered me up a bit.
After dinner, I settled down onto one of the black leather couches in the common room. My personal space was almost immediately intruded upon by Mary Claire, who crawled onto my lap without consent with a Wonder Witch product bottle in her hand. “Oh, god.” She whined. “Do you see that red patch on my face, Scorp?!” She picked up a mirror and pointed to her unblemished cheek.
“I don’t see anything, babe. But you’ll never guess what happened today-”
“Help me unscrew this bottle.” Mary Claire rudely interrupted me and thrust the product into my hands. She tossed her hair and began checking her reflection in the mirror.
“Listen, Mary Claire. I was in Defence against the Dark Arts and I got paired with Rose Weasley to practice the Shield Charm and-”
“The bottle, Scorp!”
I unscrewed the lid and handed it to her impatiently. “Anyway, we were in the middle of practicing when she suddenly started bloody attacking me! I was trying to defend myself and Belgoney gave me a whole week of detention! I’m going to miss Quidditch tryouts now and-Are you listening to me?”
Mary Claire placed her mirror down. “What?”
My harsh tone had clearly startled her. I was so pissed off, I didn’t even care.
“Would it kill you to put your blasted mirror down for one second and listen to me?!”
“Well I’m sorry,” she huffed. “But I’m kind of busy right now.”
Something inside of me snapped. She had gotten onto my last nerve, and suddenly, I hated everything about her. I hated her whiny voice, her jealous girlfriend act, and her fake personality. I hated her manipulative abilities. I hated how she would never listen.
I shoved her slim body off of me, accidentally knocking her Wonder Witch product out of her hands. She shrieked as pink liquid spilled all over her, causing every head in the common room to turn in our direction. “Scorpius! What’s the matter with you?!”
“We’re through, Mary Claire.” I said harshly.
I shouldered my way through the crowd of stunned Slytherins and stormed up the staircase to my dormitory, wanting nothing more than to get a good sleep and forget all of my troubles.
At least until morning.
*A/N: Ok, first off, I am SO SORRY for updating so late!! I know Spring Break just passed and I should have had plenty of time to write and update then, but to be honest, I was lazy. I just didn’t feel like doing anything this Spring Break, so I basically didn’t do anything except sleep and eat. Literally. I also had a rather severe case of writer’s block towards the end of this chapter. I wrote and rewrote the ending about a thousand times. I’m actually none too pleased with this chapter. I feel like I could have done better, but I’ve already started on the next chapter, and I think it’s a bit too late to change things now.
Anyway, what did you guys think of this chapter? Do you like Rose so far (there will be MUCH more of her in the upcoming chapters, I swear)? Are you glad that Scorp and Mary Claire broke up? I would really appreciate it if you took the time to give me a review to let me know what you think!
Oh, and by the way, this is totally off topic, but have any of you heard of the band One Direction? I’m currently obsessed with them at the moment. They’re coming to the U.S for their tour this summer and I’M SO EXCITED! :D
Anyway, thank you so much for reading! I’ll try to update ASAP. :)
