Chapter 6 : Missing Pieces Found
| ||Rating: Mature||Chapter Reviews: 2|
Background: Font color:
Dad told me to write to you so you don’t have a panic attack over me. So here I am! Hogwarts is fine and I’m still doing well in all my classes. The prefect job is becoming easier as the end of year is coming closer. I haven’t been getting into any trouble. Oh well, except on the first day back. But you see it wasn’t my fault. That darn Weasley girl got me in trouble. I think right about now when you heard that name, it sounded like nails on a chalkboard, but I’m not mad at her. See it’s partially my fault we got in trouble. I guess I have some of Dad’s traits because I was making fun of Weasley for being a half blood and stuff like that. Dad would tell me the stories of Hogwarts when I was little (When you weren’t home) how much he and Harry Potter and his gang would fight and somehow Hermione Granger-Weasley (I don’t know if you know her) but she came up in his stories on how you and her used to be best friends and now you don’t talk. Well did you know she got married to Dad’s other enemy Ron Weasley and they got married and had kids (Rose Weasley and some 3rd year kid) anyways I guess I brought up to loathe that whole family and I did. So I teased Rose Weasley and she snapped at me. Which got us both in trouble and we got detention. Turns out we have a lot in common. Did you know that her mom is pregnant also? Funny right? We began to talk a lot and ....... I think I’m in love with her. I asked her to be mine after we got detention but she said things were going too fast and she just wanted to be friends. I really really love her though, mum. I don’t know what to do! Anyways I just throught I would tell you what’s going on at Hogwarts. Dad told me that you were going to go see a Healer soon. If you get pictures, would you send them to me?
“You ready?” Draco says coming down the hallway. I crumple up the letter quickly and toss it in the drawer. If Draco found out that Scropius is in love with a Weasley, I don’t know how he would take it. Poor Scorpius, teenage love can get the best of one. I grab my coat and stare at myself in the mirror. My stomach is getting to out there now, it sticks out literally like a sore thumb.
Draco notices that I’m looking in the mirror at myself. “Something wrong?” He asks.
I turn to him and I pout. “I’m getting fat!” I whine. I forgot how hormonal women get when they’re pregnant.
Draco laughs at me. “I think that’s supposed to happen when you’re pregnant. Besides, you look beautiful,” He kisses me on the forehead.
This causes me to blush a lot. I swoon over this comment which causes me to go off track. “Okay, we’re going to the healer!” I say getting my focus on.
“I’m going to drop you off right?” He asks.
“I wish I could go. You sure you don’t want me to go.”
I nod. “I’ll be fine. You need to worry about your work.” I say rubbing his shoulders. “I’ll save a picture for you.”
“Please,” He says. He links arms with me. “Okay let’s go.” We apparate quickly.
“I doubt we’ll be able to do that for long,” I say as we land in the front office of St. Mungos.
“Astoria, are you okay?” He grabs my stomach. “Is the baby okay? Oh my god your turning green!”
“I’m fine,” I say sitting down. “As I was saying, I doubt we can apparate for long. I’m going to get too big to do that sort of thing.”
“Are you okay? Is it the baby?”
I shake my head. “It’s fine,” I say bravely. “I’m fine, now you’re going to be late!” I say laughing. I kiss him on the cheek. “See you after work. Love you!”
He kisses me back and heads off to work. I walk to the reception desk where a forty year old woman stares me down.
“Can I help you?” She says as nice as she could, which wasn’t nice at all.
I flash her a smile. “Yes I’m here to see Healer Lands,” I say nicely.
“Well do you have an appointment?” The woman asks dryly.
I nod and smile. She hands me a form. “Fill this out,” She orders and goes back to filing her nails and loudly chewing her gum.
I sit down at the nearest chair and begin filling out the form. The door rings open and a rush of cold air comes in. A flustered woman runs in the runs up to the front desk.
“Hi,” She says breathlessly. I couldn’t see who it was because her huge puffy coat was blocking her face. She takes it off. “I’m here for an appointment with Healer Wood? Melanie Wood?”
“Yes I know which Wood, there’s only one,” The woman says after she loudly pops her gum.
The girl laughs. “Oh uh right. Anyway I have an appointment to meet with her.”
“Fill out this form,” The woman orders tossing the form at her.
“Thanks,” The girl says dryly. “For nothing.” I hear her say out of the corner of her mouth.
She takes a seat next to me. She does a double take at me. “Astoria?”
I look over. She takes off her hood to reveal slightly frizzy brown hair. “Hermione Granger! Sorry my hood was on. Stormy weather is the worst!” She laughs.
It hits me like a ton of bricks. Hermione Granger. My old work friend from the Daily Prophet. Well, I think we’re still friends. We haven’t talked in 17 years. It’s been an on-off relationship between the two of us. I haven’t seen her in forever. She looked completely different. She looks as if she hasn’t slept in days. There were dark circles under her eyes and she yawned frequently.
“Merlin it is you!” I say gasping. I give her a hug. I guess things are okay between us? I guess she put the past behind her. “Congratulations on being pregnant!”
She looks at her stomach. “Bloody hell, is it noticeable already?” She says covering up her stomach.
“No!” I say quickly. “No I didn’t even notice! Scorpius told me that you were.”
“Oh,” She says putting down the form she finished filling out. She shoots a puzzled look at me. “How the heck does Scorpius know?”
“He and Rose got in trouble during the first day of school.”
“Rose got in trouble with Scorpius?!” It looks as if she didn’t know that piece of information. She seemed appalled and shocked.
I nod. “Didn’t Rose tell you?”
“We haven’t talked since she left. It’s usually what happens,” She shrugs. “I don’t mind, we usually catch up later.”
“The occasional one everyone month or so.”
“They take after their father, they don’t want anything to do with Muggle inventions.”
“How is Ron anyway?”
She chokes and catches her breath. “Well there is one letter Rose sent me a week ago, but it said nothing about her punishment. What did Scropius say?”
I couldn’t tell Hermione that Scorpius may be in love with her daughter. I doubt she would take that well especially when she’s pregnant. “Oh well he said she was... nice.”
“Doesn’t sound like something a Malfoy would say about a Weasley,” She snorts.
“Well he changed over the break. So did Draco.”
She snorts again. She was always a sceptic about trusting Draco when we were going out before she got promoted and before I quit. “Okay, Astoria, whatever you say.”
“Well I feel the same way about Ron,” I say back. Didn’t seem to like the bloke that much, he had an edge that was sketchy to me.I remember that I should be nice. “How has Ron been?”
“Rose is doing great in school though. Her O.W.Ls came in today and she got high marks in all her classes. She could easily become an auror, but I think she wants to do something else.”
“Good for Rose! How’s Ron being an Auror though?”
“I don’t know what Hugo wants to be when he grows up. He’s a cute kid, but he’s such a teenager now a days. You know what I mean? He’s just at this awkward stage where he just wants to lock himself in his room and listen to muggle music.”
“Right but Ro-”
“Rose really wanted to be a prefect, but she didn’t make it somehow, her cousin Dom is though. She’s a sweet girl. Rose isn’t upset about it thank goodness. She’s more glad that Dom isn’t abusing her powers like some people are. But how cool would that be if Scropius would get head bo-”
“HERMIONE!” I interrupt her rambles. “How’s Ron?”
“I think Healer Wood is ready for me now. She told me she was on a lunch break and now she should be ready.” She stands up quickly.
“Sit. Back. Down,” I order. Like always when I would tell Hermione something at work (Which was a rare occasion), she would listen and follow directions. She sat back down and avoided eye contact. I sigh. “How’s Ron?”
She laughs and runs her fingers through her hair. “Well he’s not home right now.”
“Where is he then,” She didn’t answer. “Hermione, did something happen?”
Her bottom lip begins to quiver. “I don’t know!” She cries. “I mean he finds out I’m pregnant before I was going to tell him and then he gets mad at me for not telling him! I mean I was going to tell him! I just didn’t know how! We got in the huge fight and he just left!” She wails. Stragely, she wasn’t crying about this at all. She was more distressed than upset.
“When did this happen.”
“Three months ago.”
“So what you’re saying is that you don’t know where your husband is, he isn’t with you when you’re pregnant with his child, and you’ve been alone without him for three months.”
“You guys are so stupid!” I shout as I sock her in the arm.
“Ow! It’s not my fault! Harry, Ginny, George, and I went to find him and he didn’t want to see unless I was duct taped and tied to a chair!” She distresses.
“You haven’t seen your love in three months! I remember during work, you guys couldn’t stay away from each other for one hour! He kept calling you!”
“I wish things were like that now. I miss him so much!”
“Well no duh you’re going to miss him! Three months!”
“Hermione Weasley?” A nurse says walking out the door. “Healer Wood is here to see you.”
She nods bravely. “Okay, I’m going in.” She smiles weakly. “Wish me luck!” She hugs me. “We have to stay in touch okay?”
“Yeah of course!” I smile as she disappears behind the door. I stand up and walk to the front desk. The woman loudly popping her gum looks at me.
“Can I help you?” She asks.
“Can I make a call to someone?”
She hands me the phone. “Who may I ask are you calling so I can punch in the name?”
“Ron Weasley,” I say with confidence.
“Nervous, Hermione?” Melanie says to me as I lay down on the crinkling paper.
“Not really.” I say. “More excited.”
She checks the charts and puts them down on the table. “Okay then!” She smiles. “I’ll be back in a couple of minutes. Call if you need anything.”
She leaves and I’m stuck there to stare at the walls. I sit back up and wait.
The door opens up and in walks Melanie with the charts. “Okay well let’s begin!” She smiles as she puts on her gloves.
She lifts up my blouse so that it goes over my stomach. She puts her wand near the bellybutton and begins to do the spell. Focusing on the wand, she takes it carefully and points it too the blank wall. The wall lights up with a black and white fuzzy picture, I can’t make out anything.
“There it is!” She smiles. “Now we don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl yet but you can see the hea-” She studies it a bit closely.
The door swings open and red hair pops in. I sit up quickly.
It was Ron.
He looks like he hasn’t shaved in weeks. He was beginning to get a beer gut, which is never a good sign for anyone. He had dark circles under his eyes, like he didn’t sleep in a while. His red hair, messy and twinkling with sweat. He was out of breath. He just kept staring at me.
I sit up quickly from the bed. “Ron,” I say with no emotion. “What are you doing here.” I avoid eye contact with him.
“Are you okay?” He asks as he rushes over and grabs my stomach. “Someone said something went terribly wrong with a woman who was four months pregnant with frizzy, brown hair!”
“Ron get off of me,” I say again with no emotion. “I’m fine. Not that you would care of course.”
“Hmmm.” Melanie says studying the ultrasound picture. “Hermione, there seems to be something different about the picture. Nothing’s wrong with the baby of course. But I’m just going to check on it.” Healer Wood rushes out of the room, seeming grateful that she had an excuse to get out of being a third wheel. I was left with Ron.
He kicks at the floor. “So.”
I roll my eyes. “Bloddy hell Ron, we’re acting like we’re divorced already when it hasn’t even happened yet!” I cry
“We’re getting divorced?” Ron asks, he looks so cute when he’s puzzled.
“That’s what I thought you wanted.”
“That’s what I thought *you* wanted!”
“Why would I want that?”
He shrugs. “Can’t we talk about this?”
“If we talk about it, we’ll fight about it,” I say. He knew it was true.
“What’s going to happen?” He asks.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean to us..... to the baby..... to our family.”
“Ron, I want to make this work, I really do. It’s just-” I stop myself. I honestly did not know what to say. “I just don’t know anymore. I don’t know if it’s the stresses of life. Or an unplanned pregnancy. Or .... us,” I say feeling a lump in my throat. Whatever you do, don’t cry! I lean my head into my hands.
“I don’t want to do this,” Ron says.
“This. What we’re doing now.”
“We’ve been doing this for three months and you just figure this out now. That this is the dumbest thing ever. I don’t get why this whole thing started.”
“I know it’s just. I was .... scared,” I can’t believe that these words were coming out of Ron’s mouth. He never speaks of his feelings. At all.
I stand there with my mouth wide open.
Ron continues. “It was such a shock you know. Here we are. You being editor of the daily prophet, me and Harry being Aurors. Our life is so perfect. Suddenly this whole baby thing slaps me in the face. I was so scared. I mean I knew we were great parents with two. But with three?” He sighs. I didn’t dare interrupt him. “I just didn’t know what to do. I just -” Tears form in his eyes. Not tears of sadness, tears of regret. “I just don’t want to lose you.”
I burst into tears and hang onto Ron by the neck. “Ron! I’m so sorry!” I sob into his neck.I just began to ramble and ramble and ramble on how sorry I was and that this whole thing was stupid and a bunch of other things.
“I missed you,” He says sniffling as he holds me tighter. I miss having Ron hold me. I miss the way he smelled, he smelled of the cologne I bought him ages ago that he still wears and waits me to notice it. The way he looked at me made me feel like a princess. The way his hair would naturally fall into perfection. He was perfect.
He was Ron.
I am so glad that Hermione and I are back together. I could’ve sworn that we were an argument away from splitting.
I shudder at the thought of it. Hermione and I, divorcing. I couldn’t imagine it. She and I are almost inseparable.
I hold her close as she still is crying. How could one fight cause all this drama between us? Did I really hurt her that much? Was she this way for the whole 3 months we were apart? This causes me to cry, but it wasn’t sobs, just a silent cry.
Hermione looks up at me. Her tears stopped for a while. She quietly giggles at me. “Why are you crying?” She sniffles.
I wipe away the tears and weakily smile. “I’m sorry for all the pain I caused you.”
She laughs as I continue to ramble on and on about how sorry I am. “Just stop Ron. It’s fine.”
I take a sigh of relief as I hug Hermione closer. “So can I kiss you?”
She laughs again and looks up at me. “I love how you have to ask me,” She smiles.
I laugh as I lean in to kiss her.
“Hey so guess wha-” A voice says as she walks in.
Hermione steps away from me and turns around quickly to see her old friend, I think she was a friend. I recognize her, she was married to Malfoy. I can feel my face harden. Astoria stands awkwardly in the corner. She covers her face quickly. “Ah I’m so sorry! Was I interrupting something?”
Hermione laughs as her face turns red. “On no you weren’t interrupting anything!” She laughs embarrassingly as she runs her fingers through her hair. She’s trying to change the subject as soon as possible, but Astoria interrupts her.
“So are you guys....” Astoria starts as she looks at the two of us.
“Together?” I ask.
“Yes,” Hermione says as she grabs my arm and holds it. “Yes it’s all good now,” She giggles as she looks at me.
Astoria screams as she rushes to Hermione to give her a big hug. “I’m so happy for you!” She lets go of Hermione and looks awkwardly at me. “You too Ron,” She says quietly.
I smile weakily. “Well I better be going,” She says as she picks up her things that she flung when she hug attacked Hermione. “I need to go home to tell Draco the news.”
“What news?” Hermione asks.
“Oh we’re having a girl!” She says smiling big.
“Congratulations!” Hermione exlaims as she hugs her.
“Congrats,” I say trying not to be awkward.
“Thanks!” She says. “Well I better be going.” As Astoria walks out the door. Instantly when she walks out, Dr. Wood walks in.
“Bloody hell can we not get any privacy?” I whisper to Hermione.
She giggles as she hits me in the arm as a joke. “Ron, we’re in a doctors office. Of course they’ll be no privacy,” She leans in closer to me. “And you don’t have to be on guard whenever a Malfoy shows up,” She giggles at me.
“Okay Mrs.Weas- Oh sorry Mr. Weasley is here too! Wonderful!” Healer Wood sits down on the chair and studies the charts she had in her hands. “Well Mr. And Mrs. Weasley, I’ve said before that there was something interesting about your ultrasound.”
“Is there something wrong with the baby?” Hermione asks as she's holding my hand. I feel a slight squeeze from her due to fear.
“Nope. Your baby is as healthy as can be. Or babies,” Melanie says smiling.
“Plural?” I ask.
She smiles. From all the years we were visiting, she was always coming up with creative ways to tell people about their kids. “Yep, congratulations Hermione and Ron, you’re having twins!”
Hermione’s eyes go big. “Twins?!” She smiles nd looks to me. “Ron! Twins!” She laughs. “Oh my gosh!”
“Twins,” I say brushing a hand through my hair.
Hermione laughs at me. “Ron, it looks like you’re going to faint! Your face is all white!”
“Yep!” Healer Wood says smiling.
“Makes sense,” Hermione says looking at me. “I knew my stomach was larger than average!” She turns to me, “I’ve also been gaining excessive weight for just one! And my HcG levels were pretty high too the first time I came here, I should’ve guessed it was twins! It said so right in the book I was reading. The HcG levels would be very hi-”
I chuckle, I do miss the book smart part of her. I put an arm around her shoulders which made her stop talking.
“Exactly!” Healer Woods says as she passes us some papers “Here are some information and other stuff I’m going to tell you about having twins,” After she’s finished going through all the information she has to offer. “So do you have any questions?”
“Do you know if they are boys or girls?” I ask. Hermione knows it, but I’m dying to have a boy.
She laughs and shakes her head. “Not yet Ron, if you schedule your next appointment in probably the next two months or so, I’m sure we’ll be able to tell you by then.”
“But Astoria was able to find out this appointment,” I say.
“Well every baby is different Mr. Weasley.”
There was an awkward silence for a minute then Melanie speaks again. “So you guys are all good now?”
“What do you mean?” Hermione says trying to act dumb.
“Every Healer has a sense on what’s going on in the family,” She smiles. “From the moment you walked in, I could tell that there was a problem in the Weasley family.”
Hermione’s face goes red. “Yes. Everything is good!” She says as she smiles.
“Great!” Melanie smiles. “Make sure to keep the stress down during the pregnancy, you may think that the stress is just on you Hermione, but the babies can feel the stress too.” She smiles. My stomach does a flip flop when she says babies. I can’t believe we’re having twins! “Just try not to do things that could be risky to your health.”
Hermione smiles embarrassingly. I could tell that she felt bad for being stressed and having this whole fight between us. She didn’t want to add any stress on the family. “But I doubt you should have a problem with that Hermione.” Melanie smiles. “You both have raised such good children.”
I laugh along with Hermione. I forgot completely that Melanie was the one that delivered both Rose and Hugo. She was such a good Healer, and a great friend.
“Well I better get going, another appointment is coming in soon,” She smiles as she shakes both of our hands. “It was great meeting up with you too. We’ll have to hang out soon, Oliver too. I’ll see you guys next appointmet. You can make the next appointment at the front window.”
“Thank you Melanie.” I say smiling as I grab Hermione’s hand as we head out the door.
“Your next appointment is in two months. Can we set you up on the 24 of June?”
“Great!” Hermione says smiling as she writes it down.
We head back to our house and Ginny, Harry, and George were in the living popping champagnes everywhere.
“CONGRATULATIONS!” Ginny says as she hugs both of us.
Hermione laughs as she rolls her eyes.
“How the bloody hell did you lot find out?” I ask as Ginny is still hugging me.
“Someone sent us an owl.” Harry shrugs. “I don’t know who though.”
“Here we go drinks all around!” George shouts.
“But not to Hermione,” Harry says cautiously to George. “Sorry,” She says to Hermione.
Hermione shrugs. “It’s fine. I’ll go get some butterbeer in the fridge.” She walks into the kitchen.
“It took you long enough!” Harry says slapping me on the back.
“Honestly Ron, how long did that really have to take?” Ginny says as she passes me a glass.
“Too long.” George says butting into the conversation. “We were worried you might-”
“Might what?” I ask.
“What everyone else was thinking, Ron.” Hermione says walking back in. “They were afraid we were going to split.”
“I was afraid of that too,” I say as the four of us sit down on the couches.
“Ron, everyone was,” Ginny says.
“It would suck if you guys split,” George says.
“It would make us worried then,” Ginny says.
“What do you mean?” Hermione asks.
“Well what Ginny was trying to say is,” Harry starts. “Is that if you guys split, it would leave no hope to us.”
“‘Cuz you guys are the strongest couple I have ever met. If you guys broke up, it would be like no other couple could make it.” George says.
Hermione awws as she leans on me and puts her head on my shoulders. “You guys,” She says sweetly. She begins to get teary eyed.
“Oh bloody hell not this again,” I say as I roll my eyes. Hermione laughs and playfully hits me on the chest.
“You see?” Harry says to the group. “Already cracking jokes and they haven’t been together for a day yet!”
“This is why you guys are the perfect couple,” Ginny swoons. “How was your appointment?”
“Great!” I say. From the conversation we had, I completely forgot about the appointment. “We’re having twins!”
Ginny squeals as Harry and George roll their eyes. “Oh Merlin, not another Weasley twins!” Harry says careful of the feelings of George.
“Congratulations!” George says smiling.
Harry holds up a glass of champagne. “To the twins!”
Hermione giggles as the others follow “To the twins!” We say in unison.
Hermione laughs embarrassingly as she holds my hand. She stands up quickly. “Oh my god, Ron!” She says.
“Did I do something wrong already?” I ask looking nervously around.
“No, you did nothing,” She paces the room. “We forgot to tell Rose and Hugo that we made up?” She picks up her muggle phone. “I should call them.”
“Hemrione, let me owl McGonnagal, she’ll let them go.” Harry says.
“Harry, I can’t let you do that.”
“Just because you’re Harry freaking Potter doesn’t mean you can wave your wand and allow things to go your way!”
“Please let me,” Harry begs.
“Go ahead,” I say.
He goes quickly. “I’ll get them then.”
“Harry, I couldn’t thank you enough.” I say.
“Same here,” Hermione says. “Thank you so much.” She says to Harry giving him a hug.
“No problem you guys,” He says adjusting his glasses. “I’m just glad you guys are back together.”
I put an arm around Hermione. “Same here mate.” I say smiling at Hermione.
She smiles back with her perfect straight teeth.
The door opens up and a cold front sweeps in our warm house. “I’m home! Anyone here?” Astoria asks.
“In the kitchen!” I shout.
She walks into the kitchen smelling of spagetti and meat sauce.
“Hi,” I say as I come to her and kiss her on the cheek.
“Hi!” She says happily. She scans the kitchen which has been made a complete mess from my homemade Malfoy sauce.
“What happened?” She asks.
“Making the ever famous Malfoy sauce,” I smile looking at her. “Meat, onions, scallops, a hint of sausage, and-”
Astoria’s face turns green as she rushes upstairs to the bathroom. I follow her. “Hey? What’s going on? Where’s the fire?” The slams the door to the bathroom causing me to run into it head on. My nose throbbing, I lean my ear to the door. I can hear muffled sounds of gagging. “Are you okay?” I ask as I try to lean in more.
“I’m fine!” Astoria manages to get out. I hear more gagging.
“Are you sick? Is it morning sickness?” I say even though its five o’clock in the afternoon.
“I’m fine!” She says again. “I’ll be out in a couple of minutes. Just, just allow me to freshen up okay?”
I head back downstairs and begin to put the fresh sauce I made and put it into tupperwear. It looks like we’re not having Italian food tonight. I instead make a classic, peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches, something Astoria was very fond of when we were dating.
She comes back downstairs with her hair up in a messy bun and her face beaded with sweat.
“No Italian tonight?” She asks as she slumps down onto the couch.
“Nope,” I say trying not to be bring up the fact that my wife has just had a serious case of morning sickness. I pass her a sandwich and we eat it sitting on the couch.
She smiles as she looks at the sandwich. She begins to gingerly eat it. “Just like old times at work,” She says.
I smile back as I chomp into my peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
“I have a surprise,” Astoria says giggling.
“What?” I ask.
“I went to the doctor today,” Astoria starts. She always leaves me hanging on a surprise conversation like this.
“And.” Astoria says. “I got an ultrasound of the baby.”
“Really?” I say leaning forward. “Did you get a picture for me!”
“I’m not done!” Astoria says smiling. “And we found out the gender of the baby.”
“Boy, girl? Twins? Triplets?” I say getting more and more excited.
“And it’s...” She says reaching into her purse. “A....”
She hands me a picture. “A girl!”
“Yeah!” We look at the picture. “Look” She says pointing at the picture. “There’s the head. And Look!” She giggles. “It looks like she’s waving at us.”
“A girl,” I say quietly.
Astoria puts her head on my shoulders. “I know! Isn’t it exciting? Now we can start thinking of baby names!” She gets up. “I’ll start a list!”
“Okay.” I say thinking of girl names. She sits back down on the couch next to me. “How about Scarlett?”
She writes down Scarlett. “Okay.. oh and remember, there’s no such thing as a bad name!”
“Well yeah, what if we name her like butt or arse or something?”
She giggles. “Like we would name our baby girl Arse?” She continues. “I mean that if you like the name, I’ll write it down even if I hate it. Same thing goes for you. And if we both hate the name all together, it goes in the garbage pile,” She thinks with me. “Keira?”
Astoria and I were shouting out different names as if it was a competition. Astoria was scribbling down as many as we were shouting. We sit down after shouting out different names. She soon couldn’t stop and was in a ball of laughter.
As we laugh at our fun little game, Astoria stands up. “Oh I completely forgot!” She says running to the kitchen. She brings in a colored box. “I stopped by a bakery and picked this up for the celebration,” She hands the box to me and I open it up. A small pink cake is in there with a stork carrying a pink blanket. ‘It’s a girl!’ it reads in sparkling. “I was thinking we could share it,” She says smiling.
“Yeah!” I say as I grab the spoons and we begin to devour the cake. I hold up a spoonful to Astoria. “To our new baby girl,” I say making a toast.
We clink our spoons together and I kiss her on the cheek. She giggles her usual giggle and I smile.
I sit down at the Gryffindor table for breakfast.
“Hey Rose,” James says smirking. “Malfoy’s making kissy faces at you.”
“He is not!” Lily says defending me. James snickers.
I roll my eyes as I scan the daily prophet. I’ve been hooked on it since Mum began writing it. “We’re just friends you guys,” Which wasn’t a lie, we really were friends. I would spot him in the library and we would sit down and talk together and it would be a fun time. Scorpius is really nice now and I figured out we have a lot more in common than I thought.
“How the hell could you be friends with a Malfoy?” Dom asks.
“You know it’s going to end up being more.” Roxanne says nodding. “Malfoy over there’s a casanova.”
Al laughs. “And how would you know Roxanne?”
“Look at the way he talks to the other girls! It’s obvious he has his ways with the ladies,” I can feel my face go red. Scorpius already asked me out before, could it be true that it might end up being more? I really don’t want to ruin our friendship when it has gotten this good.
Hugo sits down across from me. “Hear anything from Mum? Or Dad?” He asks me.
“Nope,” I say keeping my eyes down at the paper. Whenever Hugo asks me that, I always hate it when he gets that look of disappointment. I pass him a paper. “Good article on the Chudley Cannons. Mum wrote it so there not as much bull as when Skeeter would write it.”
Hugo nods as he is engulfed in the article. Molly sits down next to me with a scowl. “Hi,” She says to me.
“Hi?” I say concerned. Despite everyone in the family hating Molly for being such a wet blanket, I can’t help but be nice to her. She is my cousin after all.
“I finished all my schoolwork this week including bonus papers and now I have nothing to do,” She says as if it were a bad thing.
“Hey Molly, you can always do my potions work,” James smirks.
“Shouldn’t you be preparing for a quidditch match?” I shoot at James.
“Shouldn’t you too?” He says back sneering.
“Half of the bloody Weasley’s are on the team, shouldn’t we all be preparing?” Hugo says.
He was true about that one, on the Gryffindor team, James is seeker and captain (he boasts about it almost everyday), I’m chaser, Al is keeper, Lily is chaser, Fred is beater (like his father), Luke Thomas is beater, and Lucile Finnegan is chaser. So far we’ve been in the lead.
James sits back. “Tonight, there’s going to be a Gryffindor practice, so everyone needs to be at the field by 5. Oh and Rose, tomorrow is a Slytherin practice. Can you look out your dorm window and tell me if you see anything?”
“That would be cheating!” Molly says gasping.
“Do you want Gryffindor to win or not?” James asks rudely.
“I can’t do that James,” I say. “It’s too risky, we could be disqualified.”
“Well,” Molly sighs standing up. “I’ve got to meet up with my boyfriend,” She brags.
“Boyfriend, Molly?” Dom says. “You’re fucking thirteen! You should be blowing bubbles, not bo-”
“Well we better be going,” I say before Dom make a huge mistake.
James, Dom and I begin to walk to Transfiguration’s class and sit down. I instantly begin to open my book and read. I really like this class and I really want to get high grades for it.
Professor McGonnagal rushes in. “Rose!” She says as she runs up to me. “My office please.”
“Bloody hell Rose what did you do?” James asks.
“You’re not in trouble, it’s your parents,” She says seriously. I’ve known McGonnagal for some time, and I knew when she was serious.
I stand up and rush to Headmistress’s office to see Mum and Dad standing there. I look at them. “What’s going on?!” I ask distressed.
Hugo runs up right behind me. “Yeah what happened?!” He was as stressed as I was.
Mum looks to Dad. “Everything’s fine,” Mum says smiling.
“No,” I say. “You and Dad are still fighting.”
“Not anymore,” Dad says smiling at Mum. Honestly it’s like the two are teenagers in love again.
“What?” Hugo asks.
“We made up, we’re back together, Dad’s moving back in tomorrow,” Mum says smiling at both of us. “I guess you can say we’re a family again.”
Mum’s stomach is getting more noticable now. It’s a small bulge that’s stick out of her black sweater. “How’s the baby?” Hugo asks.
“Good,” Mum says holding it, she doesn’t have much to hold yet. “We went to a check up yesterday.”
“Is it a boy or a girl?” I ask.
“We don’t know yet,” Mum says. “But we found out it’s twins!”
“Twins?!?” Hugo and I say.
“Yeah!” Dad says. “Isn’t it great!”
“Wow,” I say stepping back.
“That’s so wicked!” Hugo says.
“Is this why you called us down?” I ask after a few seconds of silence. “Nothing’s wrong, no one’s dying, nothing?”
“Well, we wanted you two to stop stressing,” Mum says. “We know this whole deal was stressful on all members of the family, I could tell.”
Hugo runs up to Dad and Mum and hugs them. I join them as it’s a big group hug. Mum laughs and awws as Dad laughs at Mum being such a mush.
After a heartfelt hug, Hugo and I step away. “So this is the only reason you called us down?” I ask double checking.
“Yep.” Dad says.
“Dad!” I whine. “I’m missing transfiguration! I’ve got to pass that class and take good notes for N.E.W.Ts!” I’m super angry now.
“I’m sorry dear,” Mum says. “Hurry up and go. Love you!”
Dad nods (his sign language for “Love you”) as I rush out the door. “Bye Mum and Dad!” I say smiling as I rush out the door.
My day just got significantly better.
I rush up to Headmistress. “Professor, I’m so sorry I missed your class! I jus-”
“Rose! It’s fine!” McGonnagal says smiling. “I’m glad your parents are back together, James and Dom took avid notes for you while you were gone. They have your stuff in your next class. You don’t have to worry about falling behind, you’re the brightest student in this class,” She is still smiling.
“Thank you, Professor,” I honestly could hug her. I couldn’t help myself, my day was so good! I hug her as she laughs and gives me a pat on the back.
“Not get to your next class!” She says laughing.
I rush to my next class, Potions. The four of us (Dom, James, and I) absolutely hate potions class. I grimace as I walk into the light room.
I can remember Dad telling me the horror stories describing Dolores J. Umbridge. How cruel she was to Uncle Harry and the others. How she took over Hogwarts and made it a living hell. Dad calls her the devil.
The devil is still upon us, but in worse ways.
I sit next to James and Dom sits behind me with some Ravenclaw girl I don’t know. She stares at James and I in awe. This may about the the closest she’s ever gotten to sitting next to Harry Potter and Ron Weasley’s children. James flashes a smile and basks in the glory. I nudge him in the shoulder. “Cut it out!”
I open up my book and stare at the pages. If only I had the Half Blood Prince’s book, I might be able to pass this class then.
The door opens and I can hear heels clicking on the stone floor. I shudder as a flash of pink walks down the aisle.
Celia Umbridge. The duplicate of her mother, but worse. I wish the teachers at Hogwarts would look past the fact that she is so nice to notice that she is pure evil. Headmistress doesn’t like her either, but she had no choice. The ministry forced Professor MaGonnagal to have her teach, by orders of Dolores Umbridge.
She stands up in the front, her brown eyes glaring at each and every one of us. “Turn your books to page 24,” She says sweetly.
I open the book “It’s fun to use potions!” and begin reading. And this is what we’ll do the rest of the class, read. We can’t do potions in this class by order of the Ministry. I can’t stand it.
“Potions can be fun! Let’s learn about them!” I mimick the book reading it our loud to James. “Oh but you’re not going to make them!” I say adlibbing. “You’re just going to read about them and bore yourself to sleep!” I turn the page. “Mhhm Love Potions,” I read to James in my kid voice. James is trying to hide his howls of laughter with his fist. “Love potions can be a great way to get that special someone to love you! But be careful! A love potion is not real love at all,” I sigh as I adlib again. “But too bad you won’t be able to make any, you’re just a kid, and the ministry doesn’t trust kids to make potions! What if you dye your hair bright purple? Luckily, we’ll just bore you about it in every which way! This is the safe thing to do while Professor Umbridge sneaks around the room finding everything that’s wrong with you and criticizes you about it! When really she should be worrying about her fat behind!” I begin to laugh too and soon I can’t act anymore.
“Is there a problem here, Miss Weasley?”
I turn around to see Professor Umbridge standing right behind me. I cough to silence the laughs. “Not at all.”
“Not at all, Professor Umbridge,” She corrects me. She turns around and walks to the front. “If you do not respect the book, how can the book respect you?”
“What are books people now? I guess we’re in Transfiguration class,” I say to James. He silently laughs.
“Miss Weasley,” She asks now standing at the front of the room. “Do you want to stay in school?”
“No, my parents just paid a whole bunch of Galleans just so I can stare at the ceiling,” I say. James nudges me.
“Rose stop, you’re going to get in trouble.”
“What was that?” Professor asks.
“Nothing Professor,” I mutter.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk.” She begins to walk around the room again, smiling. “Looks to me class, that we have a bad apple. And no one wants a bad apple,” She comes to stand right behind me and touches my should slightly. “Poor dear,” She says sympathetically. “I know how you feel,” I stare her down. “You can’t help it that you’re parents now hate each other. I know, but in a couple of days, it’ll all be over with a simple, harmless, divor-”
“That’s none of your business!” I shout to her.
“Oh but everyone in the ministry knows now dear,” She says now standing in the front of the room. I stand up out of my seat, James groans. “The pain will be over soon. This is just a little bump in the road, oh no, a big bump soon since your mother is preg-”
“Who do you think you are?” I say with a grimace. “You’re not even with the ministry. It’s just your arse of a mother who’s a part of the ministry. She shouldn’t even be a part of it. You think you all that just ‘cuz you can wave your wand and let things go your way. So news flash professor, everyone hates you. Even all the teachers do. So get off your hipogriff and go home!” I almost sit back down but I stand up again. “Oh and by the way, my parents relationship is better now thank you very much!” She doesn’t do anything, she just stands there with a dumb grin. “So you can take that statement of so called gossip and take it straight to the ministry and shove it up their big, fat ars-”
“Oh professor McGonnagal, great timing!”
Headmistress’s mouth is a thin line as she stares me down. I look to my shoes so I don’t have to stare her in the eyes. “I would expect better from a Gryffindor, Miss Weasley,” Professor Umbridge giggles. “Disrespecting a teacher would result in a parent contact and a detention.”
“With me,” Celia Umbridge says giggling. I scowl at her.
“Come with me so we can owl your parents,” McGonnagal says motioning me to go with you. I begin to walk out the door and I hear a chair screech on the floor. I turn around to see Scorpius standing up.
“And do you have anything to say about what you have just read Mister Malfoy?” Professor asks.
“Rose is right,” Scorpius says to Umbridge. “You’re a pathetic arse who depends on their parents. Your a rotten potions teacher and a horrible dragon lady!” He takes a step closer. “You crossed the line talking trash on Rose’s parents, you had no right to do that!” His voice has raised a level of loudness. “And it’s true, no one likes you! Not even a Slytherin like me would want to be nice to you!” The class begins to cheer.
“SILENCE!” Umbridge shouts. Her perfect bob hair is beginning to get out of place due to stress. “Scorpius Malfoy detention! And I want you out of this class!”
Scorpius scowls as he walks to me. He gives me a small smile as both of us follow McGonnagal to her office.
Rose, James, Al, Dom and I are sitting awaiting our Hogwarts lunch.
“Bloody Hell!” Rose says backing away from her spot.
“What?” I ask.
I see a red note on the table in front of her. Molly gasps. “Oh a howler Rose! What did you do now?” She smirks
“None of your business!” She spits at her. She looks to Al and I. “What should I do?”
“Open it of course!” James says.
“Have you gotten one of theses?” Al asks Rose.
“Never,” Rose swallows. “Did any of you?” She looks to the others.
They all shake their heads. “How do you know what it’s like then?” Rose asks.
“Dad got one once,” I say to Rose.
“Did he tell you about it?”
“He didn’t really.”
“Well our Dad told us about that,” Lily pipes up. “He said Nana Molly yelled at him, a lot”
Rose’s face goes white. She continues to stare at the red letter. “You better not leave it,” A voice says behind Rose. She turns around to see Professor Longbottom staring at the letter. “My gran left me one, I ignored it and didn’t open it. It was horrible when it opened itself up.”
Rose swallow and is breathing heavily. “Okay Professor. Thanks,” She says weakily smiling as she looks up at him. Despite Professor Longbottom being good friends with our parents, it’s still awkward to hold a conversation with him knowing that he took his shirt off at Uncle George’s Christmas party last year. You just don’t picture your herbology teacher doing that.
Rose sighs. “Well, here we go,” Her hand is shaking a she opens the letter.
“YELLING AT A TEACHER?” Dad’s voice rings through the dining room.
Rose gasps, we all probably expected it to be Mum’s“I RAISED YOU BETTER THAN THAT ROSE LAVENDER WEASLEY! HONESTLY HAVE YOU NO RESPECT FOR THE HOGWARTS TEACHERS AT ALL?! I GET IT, IT’S UMBRIDGE, I KNOW HER KIND, BUT STILL!!!! NOT ONLY DOES THIS LEAVE A REPUTATION ON YOU AT THE SCAHOOL, IT LEAVES A REPUTATION FOR ME! SINCE YOU YELLED AT MISS UMBRIDGE, IT MAKES ME LOOK LIKE A BAD FATHER! I’VE RAISED YOU TO RESPECT YOUR TEACHERS AND ELDERS, AND YOU JUST BLEW IT AWAY! JUST WAIT ‘TIL I SEE YOU AT THAT PARENT MEETING! OH YOU ARE SO GOING TO GET IT WHEN YOU GET HOME FOR SUMMER, I SWEAR YOU WILL NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY!” The howler bursts into flames.
Rose stands there with a gaping hole where her mouth should be.
“Ouch Rose, that one was harsh,” James says. “Mum gave me one once, I couldn’t smile for days it was that bad, your’s wasn’t as bad though.”
Al nods. “Yeah Rose, you did the right think going up against her. People will be talking about it for days I’m sure of it.”
“Yeah, you’ll be a legend!” I say brightly.
“I already am a legend,” Rose says standing up. “I’m the daughter of two legends! And I just ruined their reputation and mine,” She says sadly. “But whatever, I have a detention to do now,” She picks up her bag and walks out the great hall.
I had a mission this time around. Last detention I had a mission: to get closer to Rose Weasley. I’ve succeeded that and now I’m on a new one: Making her my girlfriend.
We’ve been talking for some time now. It’s been great to see her smile every time I talk to her instead of a gross grimace.
I walk to Umbridge’s room. When Rose got in trouble with Umbridge, I knew this was my moment to get to go with her in detention alone and to make my move.
I sit down in the first row of the class. Rose walks in right after me and sits the next row over.
“Here we are again,” I say smiling at her.
“I know right?” She says. “Gosh it’s like we both get in trouble together! Like a pair.”
“Right, like a pair,” I repeat.
Umbridge walks in and hands us a paper and pen. “Please not this old punishment,” Rose groans.
“I see that your father has told you all about it.” Umbridge smirks. “Pity you Rose Weasley, being the daughter of someone famous,” She sneers. “Always living up to the expectation of dear Mommy and Daddy? Oh poor you. It must be so hard being famous. Being known as the daughter of Ron Weasley and Hermione Weasley. The niece of the famous Harry Potter. Gosh your life must be horrible,” She says with a pinch of sarcasm.
I can see Rose begin to blink away tears and hiding it from Umbridge, if Umbridge saw it, she would never let it go. “Oh and Scorpius,” She says walking to me. I clench my fists. “You’re famous too. What with Astoria and Draco being this years couple. With a child on the way too? Hmmm small world. Because Red head over there has a little sibling coming too,” This woman is pure evil. “But you guys will be able to afford a child, unlike Weasley over here.”
“Shut up,” I say quietly.
“What was that?”
“I said, Shut up,” I say enunciating every syllable.
“Oh look at you,” She says. “Standing up for the girl again? I can see right through you Scorpius, I see your ways. You’re just trying to get with Rose over here. In reality, you’re quaking with fear. Pure fear. You fear me. And I wouldn’t blame you, in about a millisecond, I could make your life a living hell,” She backs away. “I’m not going to do that though,” She says still keeping her sweet tone throughout this whole conversation. “Because deep down, you know you were wrong for what you did. And you want to apologize,” She sits down at her desk. “I’m just going to wait then, just wait ‘til you children apologize,” She sneers. She begins to reach for the dreaded pen and Rose gasps and cringes as Umbridge tells her what to write.
Dolores Umbridge was sneaky with her cruelness. I guess she never taught that to her daughter. She thinks for a second as a red burning sensation is in my hand. I look down as red words appear on my hand. I look over to Rose who is experiancing the same feeling. Both of our hands read the same thing. I don't know how it was happening, we weren't even writing! On my hand, it showed up in my in my scribbly handwriting and Rose in curly-q cursive:
“What I did was wrong and I’m sorry, Professor Umbridge.”
Rose begins to squeeze her eyes shut in pain as the marks indent more and more and more blood shines through.
“Right, where was I,” Umbridge thinks. “Oh yes. Weasley, you’re family is so poor. ‘Tis a shame that is,” She says sighing. “What with your father coming from a poor family and your mother being a mudblood, how are they ever going to afford another baby? I’m guessing that they’re going to have to sell it, poor thing,” She says sighing. “Maybe Malfoy could donate a tad of galleans to the cause, but since they’re deatheaters, I doubt they’ll do much. But you never kno-”
“Stupefy!” Rose shouts from her chair. Celia Umbridge slumps to the floor as Rose stands up with tears and practically sobbing. She gasps.
I stand up and rush to the potions cabinet and pick up some firewhisky that some seventh year prat probably put in there to hide it. I place it next to her. It’s illegal to drink firewhisky in school, but just to be safe, I put a gulp of it down Umbridge’s throat just to be safe. I grab Rose’s hand and run out the door.
We rush to the empty library as we sit in a couch. “Give me your wand,” I order.
Rose is crying. She follows and hands me her wand. “What are you doing?”
“If they ask us anything, they’re probably going to check your last spell on both of our wands. If they see that your last spell was stupefy, they’re going to question us,” I do a couple of simple spells to book around the room. Rose is still crying.
“Aw Rose,” I say wiping away a tear on her face. “Don’t listen to what she says, she’s load of bull shit.”
“But words hurt Scorpius,” She says.
I put my arm around her and bring her close and hug her. I’ve never seen her so, upset. “She’s just jealous.”
“No!” She says getting out of my hold. “What she said is true! My family is dysfuncional and are going to divorce! My family is poor and they’re going to sell my newborn siblings! All of it is true!” She sobs as she leans in on me. I put my head on top of her head.
“Rose,” I comfort. “You’re family isn’t poor,” I put my arms around her. “And your family isn’t going to split,” I soothe. “Didn’t just before potions they told you they made up?”
“I know,” She sniffles. “But what I did, what you did to her. Oh Scorpius we’re going to get in so much trouble!” She sobs.
“No we won’t,” I comfort her. “You see, they’re going to think she drank so much firewhisky that she passed out drunk. It happened to other teachers before.”
“That’s..... that’s horrible!” Rose gasps. “But so... so..... It felt really good to stupefy that lady,” She says quietly.
“You. Rose Weasley? Are you agreeing that this was a good choice?” I say as I still have my arm around her.
“Well, she deserved it!” Rose says. “What are your parents going to think of this?”
“What they won’t know won’t hurt them,” I say.
She puts her head on my shoulder as we sit there in the silence of the library. “Scorpius, thank you,” She says.
“For everything,” She says. “For the past three months you put up with my vents and tears.”
“I wouldn’t say put up,” I say. “I’m always glad to listen and help. Besides, you would do the same for me.”
“Yeah but still. Thank you. You’re the only person in this school that I can really trust,” Her head is still on my shoulder, is this a good thing or a bad thing? Does it mean she considers us really good friends? Or something else?
“Rose,” I start. “Can I ask you something?”
“Anything, Scorpius,” Rose says.
“We’ve been good friends for some time.”
“Right,” Rose says nodding. “Three months.”
“And we’re really close.”
“Extremely, Scorpius, you’re like my best friend.”
“Do you think it could be more?”
“What do you mean?”
“Remember what I asked you. Three months back?”
“.... yes..” Rose says nervously.
“Well, you said we shouldn’t be taking things so fast.”
“Yes that’s right.”
“Well, it’s been three months... do you want to be my girlfriend?”
“Why?” I ask confused.
“Why do you like me?” I can’t believe she’s asking me this. “You could have had your pick of any girl out there. Why me?”
“Rose, why are you asking me thi-”
“I mean I’m not really that good looking. My hair is frizzing in the morning that takes a couple of straightening spells. I’m failing potions class as we speak. My face breaks out almost every other week. I even have gross morning breath! Let’s face it, I’m not the prettiest girl out ther-”
“Rose,” I interrupt her dumb talk. I take my hand and gently lift her head to look at me. “You are the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen in my entire life.” Rose looks away. “So, will you be my girlfriend?” A few minutes of silence pass.
“Yes,” She says smiling at looking at me. She puts her head back on my shoulder and grabs my hand.
“Really?” I say shocked. Rose nods and I smile. I sit there in disbelief, my mission was complete. We sit there silently for a while, it wasn’t an awkward silence, but more of an appreciative silence.
Professor McGonnagal rushes into the library and Rose pushes away from me. “Rose, I would like to meet you in my office.” Rose sighs and stands up. It sounded as if McGonnagal wasn’t in a good mood to talk to Rose.
“Well,” She sighs. “I guess I have to go.”
“Wait,” I say getting up and following Rose. She stops and looks around. “I’ll go with you,” I say holding my hand out.
She smiles as she grabs my hand as we walk to Headmasters office. “Thanks, Scorpius.”
“You thank me a lot you know?” I say grinning.
“Well you do a lot for me,” She says smiling. “You’re going to have to get used to it because I’m going to thank you, a lot,” She laughs as she stops in front of Headmistress’s door. She looks back at it for a while and looks back.
“You want me to go with you?” I ask.
“You would do that?” She asks.
“If it isn’t a problem with McGonnagal.”
“No, she wouldn’t mind,” Rose says as she grabs my hand and walks in.
The door opens and we walk in.
I look into the office and there standing is Mr. and Mrs. Weasley and Mum and Dad.
