Chapter 3 – Meet the crew

It’s amazing how different you look in the mirror, how much older you feel after only just a few years. Especially going from braces, flat chest, and freckles to what I am looking at.

I’ve locked the door to the bathroom to stop Lily from running back in to tell me that I’m going to be late for our first class. I’m not worried, I’ll just pull the old I’m suffering from amnesia thing and don’t know where the classroom is trick. Everyone will believe me seeing as Professor Dumbledore kept to his promise at dinner last night.

“And make sure you jump over this step Ames it’s a trick step and down here’s the kitchen all you got to do is tickle the pear and your through…”

Apparently a tour meant that I was shown the kitchen, Gryffindor dormitory and a number of secret passageways that was obviously Sirius’s pride and joy. He had also taken it upon himself to re-educate me in the numerous details of quiditch, subtly failing to answer any of my questions about the classes.

“So what are the school houses about?” I asked.

Sirius seemed to deflate a little.
We had passed other students all of whom were wearing the same type of robes except for the different coloured trimmings, most had failed to give me a second glance. Sirius on the other hand was greeted almost everywhere we went. Guys would call out loudly or give a small nod while girls giggled and shortened their skirts making sure they saved me their most evil of glares.

“I keep forgetting how little you know.” He said giving me a small smile.

“All the first years are divided into four houses where they will then live together; it’s kinda like a family. Well there are Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherine and Gryffindor, we're Gryffindor by the way, anyway you can earn points for your house and the house with the most points at the end of the year wins the house cup.”

“Which house won last year?” I asked as we passed through another corridor.

“We did. GO GRYFFINDOR THE BRAVEST OF THE LOT!” He yelled pumping his fist into the air.

Reaching up I slapped him playfully on the side of the head earning myself a lop-sided grin.

“Where are we going now?” I asked, rolling my eyes.

I watched as Sirius paused putting a hand to his ear as he pretended to listen closely to somthing. “What’s that? My stomach is speaking to me… Come on let’s eat.”

Drifting back from my thoughts of last night I begin to tug at the nots in my hair. Stupid long hair. Tug, Ouch! Why on earth did I grow it so long? Pulling it up into a ponytail I sigh, no matter what I do with it, there will be no chance of blending in.

“And if you would be so kind to give me your full attention. Thank you Mr Potter, as some of you may be aware, Miss Winters has been returned to us after her accident but it is my regret to inform you that she has no memory of her past years here at Hogwarts. Mr Lestrange however will not be returning this year due to matters of safety that prohibit him from joining us.”

A loud hiss from the Slytherine table cut of Professor Dumbledore as he sat down again.

“Yeah, our safety from a cold-blooded psychopath!” Growled a boy I now knew as James. I watched as he angrily took a stab at a piece of potato and missed.

Sirius had happily sat me down in the middle of his group of friends and introduced us, which turned out to be necessary as only Remus seemed to know me at all.

“What do you mean our safety?” I asked shifting slightly to the right to give room for some new comers.

“Well, it may be because Lestrange is a slimy piece of…” growled James as he jammed his glasses onto his nose.

“What he means is that Dumbledore is being watched by the Ministry of Magic, it’s the only reason why he would spill such bullshit. I mean come on Lestrange nearly killed an aurors and it took two more officials to take him down. Nah, they just don’t want to admit that they were wrong and should’ve listened to Dumbledore.” Finished Sirius frowning hard at the head table.

“We have a Ministry of Magic, kind of like the muggle system except they make sure no word of us gets out to the muggles otherwise it would be like the medieval ages again, where we were pestered for cures and then tried us for the stake.” Said Remus, correctly reading my confused expression.

“Is it true you can’t remember anything?”

I turned to face the person talking and ended up face to face with a mob of girls. The leader of the group swung her long, blonde hair over her shoulder, flicking me in the face with the tips. Widening blue eyes she smiled.

“I can remember some stuff, just not a whole lot.” I answered. A few girls sniggered.
Slowly chewing on a piece of pasta, I grinned as the girls all grimaced at once. A few too many calories for them to handle.

“That’s interesting.” The leader smiled even wider, somehow managing to reveal all her teeth in one go.

Turning her attention away from me, she slowly gazed at each boy till they blushed deeply. She winked. Only Sirius chewing happily on a piece of sausage seemed unaffected.

“See you around Remus.”

And as one the group left, their hips swaying in perfect time.
I turned as I heard my group sigh. Remus rubbed his eyes and sighed again.

“And when did this happen?” I asked.

“What do you mean?” Murmured Remus looking uncomfortable.

“You and Barbie over there.”

“Astrid’s not interested in Remus she’s only trying to get back at me, I dumped her last month and she’s still seething.” Groaned Sirius.

“Someone’s a bit full of themselves.” I grinned.

“Trust me when I say she was pissed.”

Standing up I looked expectantly at the four boys, one of which was still shovelling down bucket loads of food.

“You do realise I still have no idea how to get back to the dormitories”

Everyone turned to look at Sirius who grinned awkwardly. Except of course for the stubby kid who was still shovelling down food. I really needed to learn his name.

“About that”

“Amy!” Someone shouted.

I stumbled backwards as something incredibly red ran into me. I realised that it was a girl with wavy red hair and that she was crying softly as she hugged me.

“Umm…hi…” I squeaked.

“I was on patrol and didn’t hear that you were awake because someone failed to mention it.” She glared furiously at Sirius who grinned meekly.

“And then as I was getting here I heard people talking about you and oh is it true, I was so worried you were unconscious for weeks and Madam Pomfrey said, said… that…”

The girl burst into tears once more and I awkwardly patted her arm.

“If you don’t mind me asking, who are you?”

The girl stood back and looked at me carefully. “It’s true, you really don’t remember.” She whispered.

And that’s when she began to bawl her eyes out.

“It’s alright Lil’s, she doesn’t remember any of us so it’s not like you were singled out.” Murmured James, who had quickly jumped to her side.

“Shut up Potter, I doubt you even knew her till the accident.” The girl growled angrily brushing away tears.

“Well it was more like tonight but still…”

“I’m going to kill you Potter.” She screamed.

Sirius and Remus nodded once then quickly jumped up and grabbed them. Sirius held a very grateful James, while Remus struggled and pleaded with the enraged girl who seemed intent on getting James blood. This looked like a well practise move and I had a feeling that this sort of confrontation happened a lot.

“I’m only going to let go of you if you promise not to do something stupid.” Called Remus, shifting to the right to avoid her flying feet.

The red head slowly nodded her head and both Sirius and Remus sprang away. Shooting a glare at the boy she had just tried to kill the red head spun around and gave me a bright smile.

“I’m Lily Evans, we… we were good friends until… come on I will show you to Gryffindor dormitory, I doubt Sirius showed you anything that you would actually need.” She said turning around and beckoning for me to follow.

“If you don’t hurry up Amy, I’ll just leave and you can find your own way to class.” Lily yells, pulling me once again out of my memories.

“Be ready in a minute.” I call for the fifth time this morning.

Pulling my hair back out of its pony tail I sigh and walk out of the bathroom. I am alone; all the other girls have already left.

I guess Lily is keeping to her threat.

The common room is almost empty except for a boy that is spread over the lounge. I grin and silently creep up, the boy is fast asleep. Poking him gently I watch as he stirs.

“Sirius, what are you doing here.”

“I could say the same to you.” He grins rubbing his eyes and stretching. Standing up he looks around the empty common room. “You sure did take your time.”

“What do you have first? No more importantly what do I have and how do I get there?” I ask walking out of the common room. I am going to ignore the fact that I still only know how to get to the great hall and the Gryffindor dormitory.

“We have charms I think but we don’t necessarily have to attend since we’re already 10 minutes late.” Sirius says hopefully.

“Nah I want to go, I’m actually looking forward to the classes.”

Sirius trips over a stair and catches himself on the railing.

“Are you sure you’re okay, maybe we should go back to the hospital wing just to make sure you’re alright.” He asks checking my temperature.

“Very funny, but honestly its kinda cool you know doing magic and this is going to be fun.” I brush his hand away and stop at a corridor. I really need a map.

Sirius smirks and takes the lead heading down a different corridor.

“I know this is all real but still it’s kinda hard to believe, what do you do in charms exactly? Do we use our wands?” I pull my wand out of my pocket and twirl it around in my fingers, spraying blue sparks. Lily found it last night under a pile of my things when I had asked her if we actually used them or if they were for decoration.

“And it might be a good idea for you to put that away, you were dangerous enough when you knew how to use that thing.” Snaps Sirius dodging out of the way as more sparks fly out of the wand.

Hastily shoving it back into my pocket I grin and run forward to catch up to him.

“You never answered my question?”

“What, about charms? I guess it’s okay but…”

“No my question yesterday, how do you know me exactly?” I cut him off.

“Oh, we were friends I guess, potion partners in third year. You were the one who always calmed down Lily when James did something stupid like ask her out. We never really… well… we dated for a bit last year…” He frowns and rubs his nose self-consciously.

“What happened?”

“I did something stupid.”

“What do you mean…?” I start.

“And what do you two think you’re doing? Black, how am I surprised?” Snarls an old man, fixing his beady eyes on Sirius who freezes in place.

“We’re going to class.” Sirius says to the man. To me he mutters under his breath, “Filch”.

“Are you now? Then how come your late, I’m going to have to give you both a detention for being tardy, what are you looking at girl?” He barks turning to me.

“Nothing sir, I’m just trying to work something out.” I say screwing up my face in a way I hope looks puzzled.

“Work out what?” Filch sneers.

“I was just wondering why a wizard as capable as your self would allow someone to vandalise the hallways.” I answer shaking my head.

“But I’m sure you have your reasons.” I say, quietly poking Sirius in the ribs.

“Yeah, didn’t you notice the paint down on the third floor; it was a bit hard to, it looked like Peeves handiwork for sure...” Says Sirius, rubbing the spot where I had poked him.

Filch pauses, from what I had heard from James, Filch and Peeves had an ongoing battle of wills and it seems to be common knowledge that Filch dreams of the day that he could have the poltergeist removed.

“You should go get him sir, it could be a once in a lifetime opportunity and we all know they don’t come around often.” I say smiling kindly.

“I don’t… You two better be here when I’m back or…”

Out of the corner of my eye I watch as Sirius waves his wand and is rewarded with an almighty crash from downstairs.

Filch turns white and hobbles down the corridor shouting threats as he runs.

“Come on” Whispers Sirius as soon as Filch is out of earshot. Taking my hand we run down the stairs, panting heavily as we reach the classroom door.

“Miss Winters, Mr Black I do hope you have a good explanation as to why you are late.” Squeaks the teacher.

Behind him I can see Lily roll her eyes and James give us a wink.

Taking a deep breath I grin.

“Let’s just say it was Amnesia.”
