Later that day in Transfiguration (a class I had without Lily) I sat next to Sirius and Remus. We chose the seats in the very back corner of the room so that we wouldn’t be overheard.
“… and she still wants to be his best friend! I can’t believe she still likes that greasy-haired Slytherin scum.” I finished.
Sirius rolled his eyes and chanted ‘Here, Here!’ (which resulted in 5 points being taken from Gryffindor by the young, uptight new teacher, Professor McGonagall).
“We have to do something about this,” Sirius said in a softer voice. “I don’t like seeing you being beaten out by him! Lily’s loyalty should lie with you, and you alone. You’re the hot topic of the school, but all people can talk about is “Lily and Severus in the library”, or “Snape is flirting with Lily”… you have to win her back, man, or you’ll lose her forever!”
I nodded and looked down at the rat I was supposed to be turning into a goblet. “I’m going to get him away from my girlfriend” I muttered, and with a ferocious swipe of my wand, the rat squealed in agony and morphed into a shiny goblet.
I followed Severus to the edge of the Black Lake at lunchtime, making sure he couldn’t see me. I had left Sirius and Remus inside, finishing their potions homework, having decided to talk to Severus on my own.
“Hi there, Snape,” I growled.
“What do you want?” he replied, not even looking up from his potions book.
“Well, firstly, what are you always writing in that stupid book?” I hissed, kicking it from his hands. I knew I was acting really horribly, but I just hated everything about that ridiculous little girlfriend stealer.
“Go away, you idiot.”
“Don’t call me an idiot, Snape.”
“Oh, sorry… how about bighead? Or arrogant, selfish freak? Or, perhaps, boyfriend of a mudblood?” Snape whispered as he slowly turned towards me.
“Do NOT call her a-”
“I can call her whatever I want, I knew her first, I had her first, I-”
I punched him. It hurt my fist, but the sense of glory made it so worth it. So I punched him again. And again.
“James? JAMES!” It was Lily’s voice, but I kept hitting and punching and attacking Snape.
“James, stop it!”
I ignored her again, and instead yelled at the weak boy now lying on the floor beneath me.
“FIGHT BACK! YOU ARE A WEAK, STUPID-”
“Unless you stop right now, I am going to break up with you. I will never speak to you again, James Potter.”
I hadn’t even seen her coming, but suddenly Lily was there, staring at me. She looked beautiful even in her anger. But my anger was too much, and I practically growled at her and then punched Snape again.
“I hate you James Potter. We are OVER!” Lily screamed. In a flash of her long hair, she had run away, tearing down away from the lake and the castle, and towards the forest.
I stayed in my dorm all evening while everyone else laughed and chatted in the Common Room. At first I just paced back and forth, too angry and confused to do anything else, but eventually I sat down on my bed and cried. I didn’t usually cry, and I felt stupid, but not as stupid as I felt to have lost Lily.
“Why did I punch him again?” I asked myself. “What is wrong with me?”
Sirius came in later and patted me on the back. I think he could tell I’d been crying but he didn’t mention it.
“James, I hope this doesn’t annoy you, but I’m going to go looking for Lil. She hasn’t been seen since… well, since lunchtime. I’m worried about her.”
I nodded. I was worried about Lily as well.
* * * * * * * * * *
“James! Wake up! James… JAMES!”
“Huh? Wha- what?” I stuttered.
“James, Lily isn’t anywhere in the castle or the grounds. Remus and I have looked everywhere… we even checked all the girl’s bathrooms! The only place left is… the forest!!”
I rolled out of bed and pulled on some clothes. I could hardly tell what was going on, but one thing was for sure – I had to find Lily. I had to find her, and save her, and tell her how much she meant to me. I had to try and make her forgive me.
“I love her, Sirius.” I muttered as we stumbled through the dark corridors.
“I know, mate,” Sirius replied. “I get it. She’s a pretty amazing girl.”
