Chapter 32 : Making Amends
| ||Rating: 15+||Chapter Reviews: 1|
Background: Font color:
Nat fell asleep in my arms as I was taking her down to the Hospital Wing. Merlin, I was terrified when she didn’t come back from talking with Moody. It took all the strength Blaise had to keep me still in the stands when I saw Moody come back into the arena without her. And then when I saw her come back with Potter and Diggory’s dead body all scratched up and a big gash in her head, I was ready to pass out. But, I had to stay strong for her.
It tore me apart to have her flinch when I touched her and hear her sob uncontrollably while I had my arms wrapped protectively around her. I’ve heard her cry before, but that was the worst. To know I couldn’t protect her from the danger she was in. I’m supposed to be there for her and make sure nothing bad happens. I’m supposed to protect her. I couldn’t do it this time. I’m so pissed at myself.
Madame Pomfrey showed me a bed to lay Nat on. She did a once over to make sure there wasn’t any lasting damage, and healed her head. I sat down in the chair next to bed and just looked at her. She’s so beautiful when she’s sleeping. She’s peaceful and looks like an angel.
“Madame Pomfrey?” I asked. The nurse turned to look at me.
“Yes, Mr. Malfoy?”
“Are you going to give Natalie a Dreamless Sleep Potion?”
“No. She’s already asleep. However, if she wakes up from any nightmares, I won’t hesitate to give her some.”
I thanked her and she walked into her office.
Potter and Dumbledore came in a short while later. Following them were the entire Weasley gang and a black dog. Potter spotted me and came stumbling over. He stroked Nat’s cheek and kissed her forehead. Then he turned to me.
“You really love her, huh?”
“Yes, with every fiber of my being.” He pondered this for a moment and finally nodded.
“For her, do you think we should call a truce?” He stuck his hand out for me to shake.
I was reminded of the first day of Hogwarts. I asked Potter to be friends with me. He declined and decided to be friends with Bloodtraitor Weasley and Mudblood Granger. I resented him for that. I still do. This truce doesn’t mean I have to be friends with him though. I glanced at Nat. It was for her. She’d be thrilled that her brother and I would tolerate each other.
“Alright,” I finally said. “For Nat.” I shook his hand and he walked away to the other side of the room to sleep.
I slowly opened my eyes and was blinded by the lights of the Hospital Wing. I felt a weight on my stomach and looked to see Draco sleeping on me. I smiled softly. I ran my fingers through his soft hair and like he was being electrocuted, he sat up and smiled at me tiredly.
“Hello, love. How’d you sleep?”
“Fine. I’m surprised I didn’t have any dreams. Did I get a Dreamless Sleep Potion?” He shook his head.
“No, Pomfrey didn’t want to since you were already asleep.” I looked over to the other side of the wing.
Harry was sleeping with Sirius sitting by his side. I got up from my bed and walked over there. “Hey Sirius.” He looked and me and smiled.
“How are you?”
“Fine, I guess. How’s Harry?”
“They had to give him a Dreamless Sleep Potion. He was a mess last night.” I nodded and sat at the edge of the bed.
I don’t know how long it was before I heard Sirius say, “Hey Moony.” My head snapped up and I was looking right at my godfather.
“Hello, Natalie.” he said. I nodded at him and he sighed. He asked Sirius to excuse us for a second, and Sirius obliged. Remus knelt in front of me.
“I’m sorry Natalie. I’m sorry I haven’t replied to your letters. I’m sorry for making excuses, and I’m sorry for being rude and screaming at you in that letter I sent earlier in the year. Your parents made me your godfather completely trusting that I would take care of you if something happened to them. And I-I haven’t being doing that. I kept my true identity from you and it is understandable why you resent me for that. I just thought that it would be easier for the both of us. With my condition, I didn’t want you to be close to me and end up getting hurt. I was a coward. I just hope that we can put all that behind us and start over. Be a family. Although, I understand if you don’t want that.”
I studied Remus for a while before saying anything. I could tell his words were spoken in absolute truth. He did seem remorseful and he really did want to start anew. I sighed.
“Yes, it did hurt Remus. I finally found out that I had other family other than the Dursleys and it felt like you wanted nothing to do with me. I don’t care about your condition. You’re still Remus Lupin; my parents’ best friend, my godfather. And yes, I want to be a family.”
He smiled and hugged me. I smiled too.
“It’s about time.” a groggy voice from beside me said. I broke the hug and looked over at Harry. I moved closer to him as he sat up. He pulled me toward him and laid me down next to him. He dipped his head to my ear and whispered, “I’m sorry.”
“Harry Potter, what on Earth do you have to be sorry for?” He sighed.
“I got you into this mess.”
“No Harry, don’t go blaming yourself. It was in no way your fault. Crouch was the one that took me into the maze. He threatened to hurt you if I didn’t call. And Voldemort’s return wasn’t your fault either. He’s an evil git and found a way to do it.” He was about to say something else, but I cut him off. “And don’t go blaming yourself for Cedric’s death. It was not your fault. Voldemort was the one that killed him. There was nothing you could do save him. Voldemort was too quick.”
He nodded and hugged me tight.
Someone cleared their throat and I looked up and saw Draco standing at the foot of the bed. “Pomfrey says we can leave whenever you want to.” I got up from the bed and took his hand.
“Draco, there’s someone I’d like you to meet. Remus, this is my boyfriend, Draco Malfoy.” Remus came over and shook Draco’s hand.
“Glad to meet you. Make sure you take care of my Natalie here.”
Dray smiled. “I will, sir.”
Harry got up from the bed and hugged Sirius goodbye. He wouldn’t be able to been seen on the grounds in his human form because he was still seen as guilty and a fugitive in the Ministry’s eyes. He then said goodbye to Remus and joined me and Draco.
“Shall we go then, guys?” I looked at him weirdly.
“Shall? Since when do you say shall?” He chuckled.
“I spend way too much time around Hermione.” I rolled my eyes.
“Bye Remus. Write to me?”
“Of course.” he replied.
I led the way out of the Hospital Wing and heard Harry and Draco making simple conversation behind me. I turned around. “Since when do you two get along?”
“Oh, we decided to call a truce last night. You know, so the stuff that happened this year doesn’t happen again.” Harry said.
“Great! So you won’t mind if Draco stays with us at Privet Drive for the first couple weeks of summer then?”
The look of horror on Harry’s face was hysterical.
