Lily Evans sat in the seat in front of James Potter, twirling her hair absently around her wand, while listening to Professor Binns, the ghost who taught History of Magic. James looked around, noticing as he did that Lily happened to be the only one paying attention. This was one of the reasons he loved Lily, she was different.
As he sat and stared at the back of her head, Sirius Black, his best friend was prodding James on the arm continually to get his attention. Sirius turned and grimaced at the other two boys Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. Sirius rolled his eyes and mouthed “He’s in Lily-land”. This was true.
Whenever Lily was around James he went in to a kind of stupor. He was completely non-responsive. The other Marauders had figured that once Lily had agreed to go out with James, this stupid behaviour of love-sickness would stop. They were wrong of course.
They often thought back to the first time that James saw Lily, besides on the Hogwarts Express when she was with Sniviellus.
6 years ago.....
James, Sirius, Remus and Peter were hiding behind a tapestry on the third floor, waiting with bated breath for the little red haired witch they had seen on the train to come down to breakfast. They were pranking her, much to her unawareness. She had showed on the train that she was a Goody-Two-Shoes. They decided to give her a taste of the bad side.
They heard footsteps. Then a scream. And then the tapestry was torn away in her anger. The boys fell about laughing at her. She was covered from head to foot in jelly. They stopped laughing when they heard something unbelievable. She was laughing, doubled over. The Marauders looked at each other, utterly confused. Then they realised. Peter had run as fast as he could to the jelly in the corridor and started eating it.
Still laughing Remus and Sirius pulled Peter away from the jelly. They turned to call to James. But James wasn’t listening.
James’ POV
James was standing there, mouth open. He was gazing at this girl. She was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. The way her bright, sparkly green eyes lit up from her laughter and the way her fiery red hair was flying in her face as she shook with laughter.
“JAMES!” A yell brought James to his senses. The girl had stopped laughing and stood there looking at him, one of her eyebrows raised. Oh, I haven’t introduced myself, James thought.
“Hi, I’m James Potter, and who might you be?” James said, trying to act as though he hadn’t been staring at her.
“Lily Evans, nice to meet you.” Lily said back to him. She was still eyeing him warily.
“Bye” James said with a hope he didn’t sound too pathetic. She waved slightly still looking a little confused.
When they were out of earshot James sighed, “She’s like an angel.” Sirius look worried.
“James, what the hell is wrong with you? She is just a girl.” he said, turning on James and shaking him, as if trying to put some sense in him.
Back in Present Day
Sirius sighed, remembering that, that was the day he had almost lost his best friend to a girl. The bell sounded. They all rose, trying to get out of the stuffy classroom. As usual, James and Lily hung back. And as usual Sirius and Remus watched from the door. But something was wrong today. Something very wrong.
Lily POV
I have to say it. I have to. Say it! Just say it Lily! I took a deep breath and spoke.
“James, I have to tell you something very important.” James nodded, confused. “This isn’t working anymore. You have changed. Not for the better. You are not the James I fell for. I’m so sorry.” I choked on these last words. It was so hard to say that. I looked up quickly and James looked.....strange. He looked sad, angry, confused and regretful. And something that surprised me further was that he just left. Just left with out a fight. See what I mean? He’s changed.
James’s POV
I can’t believe it. She just broke up with me. It can’t be true, but it is. I needed to say something but I couldn’t start a fight. That would go against my prefect rules. Fighting was forbidden. And I was a prefect. I was supposed to stop this kind of thing, not start them. So instead I turned around and left. I heard a sob, knowing it must have almost killed Lily to say that.
Sirius POV
Oh my Godric, did she just say that. I was frozen. My mind not working. Before I knew it James was gone. I looked at Lily, she was crying, crying more then I have ever seen her cry. Her tears were coming in floods. She pushed roughly past me and was gone. Why had she done that? I had noticed James’ changes but I didn’t realise they were affecting her this much.
well this is chapter 1 of my fanfiction. I know it is short but I couldn’t fit much more in here. I just couldn’t.
I wanted this fan fic to be different to other James/Lily fanfics because we all know the love story. James likes Lily, Lily doesn’t like him. Then she falls in love, etc etc. But what if there is a twist? A swap?
Ever think of James as the goody-two-shoes and Lily as the rule breaker?
