Chapter 3 : First Night and Day

Background: Font color:
I always thought that the first night at Hogwarts was the best. Then again, I never spent it with my real brother. The whole night was spent looking at the moon. Harry slept so loudly. It was quite a shock. Every time he snored, he woke himself up. It made me laugh each time. I looked at him every once in a while, making sure he didn’t see me looking at him. One time he snored so loud, he woke himself up and saw me on the window ledge.
“You should get some sleep, Victoria. You’ll be tired in the morning,” Harry yawned as he sat up on his bedpost. He ran his hand through the mess on top of his head he called hair.
“I doubt it. I never get tired while looking at the moon. It’s just something that calms me down when I’m stressed. You know?”
He mumbled something and stared at me, but when I looked back at him, he nodded. He picked up his glasses and put them on, then able to clearly see everything. He got up out of bed, which made me see that he didn’t have a shirt on. My eyes widened and quickly lead them back to the moon. He laughed to himself and grabbed a shirt from his trunk. He quickly put it on and didn’t seem embarrassed at all.
“Do you know what time it is?”
“Um, it’s almost five. I should’ve been up anyway. I’ll get dressed,” I said as I moved my way across the room.
“You get up before five in the morning?”
“Yeah, I like to watch the sun come up, but it’s late today.”
The room was dark, like almost pitch black. I could see the shadows of the bedpost and the closets but I couldn’t help it when Harry’s trunk stubbed my toe. The pain was awful. I didn't scream; I kept it inside, but Harry could put the clues together. He ran over and moved his trunk out of the way.
“Oh, Victoria. Are you okay?” He asked.
I breathed in and out. “Yeah, I think so.” I lay back down on my bed and gasped.
“What’s wrong?” Harry said, stopping and leaning on my bedpost.
“Oh it’s nothing, trust me. It just hurts a bit. Let me just stand up.”
I did and nearly fell over. Harry caught me and helped be back up. I put by hair up and got dressed when Harry couldn’t see. I put some gauze from my trunk onto my foot and Harry just stared when I did. I looked up at him slightly and raised my brow.
“Why do you have so much gauze in your trunk, just hanging around?”
“I get hurt a lot, especially in the night. So, I need to carry around first-aid materials with me. I also have alcohol incase either of us get hurt and need to make sure that our cuts don’t get infected,” I smiled lightly, tying the last layer of gauze and cutting the string with my teeth.
“Us? You know someone else who gets hurt just as much as you do?”
I stayed silent until he spoke again. I looked when he didn’t notice.
“You sound like someone I know. At least, he should carry around those things with him. He definitely gets hurt a lot.”
I stopped and had a certain person in mind. I scoffed softly to myself. I smiled just thinking about him. My eyes narrowed, and I stood up, wobbling really. I packed everything into my bag and put the strap on my arm.
“You probably don’t know him. He’s very close to me.”
“Did he work here? I have been here as long as you have,” I reasoned.
“Oh yeah. I keep forgetting that. Uh, you remind me of Remus Lupin.”
A smile appeared on my face without looking at Harry, and Harry had a quizzical expression on his. I looked at him and noticed it. I opened my mouth once again.
“I know who you’re talking about. He knew my biological parents quite well,” I said quite easily.
Harry lit up, which was something I didn’t think I’d see on the second day I’d spend with him. He walked over to me and put his hand on my shoulder. I glanced at it and didn’t mind it.
“You know who you’re biological parents are?”
“Uh,” I froze. I actually did know who they were, but he couldn’t know that. “I’d been told a lot about them. They went to Hogwarts with Remus.” I bit my tongue.
“Remus? Why do you call him that?”
I bit my tongue again before turning back to him. “Professor Lupin, I meant. Whenever I talk about him outside of school, I was told to call him Remus. I’ll call him Professor Lupin from now on if that makes you more comfortable. Would you excuse me for one moment? After that we'll go to breakfast.”
He nodded, gathering his books. I left quickly, trying to leave the awkward moment at the door. I made it quietly down the spiral stairs and saw Hermione sitting on the couch. She was sleeping softly. I went over to the couch and whacked her with my bag. She woke up, and I cupped her mouth with my hand. Once she saw my face, she stopped trying to scream.
“Victoria!” She whispered.
“Harry’s coming down any second. I need to talk to you. Now,” I said in a low voice.
She pulled me up to her room and made sure Ron was asleep. I glanced over to him and saw him snore just like Harry. Oh how much those boys were alike. Ron was murmuring about spiders most of the time.
“What did Harry say?”
“Well, when I stubbed my toe and put gauze on it, he said that I reminded him of Remus Lupin.”
“Your godfather?!” She said loudly, covering her mouth as soon as she said it. She looked over to Ron, and he woke up briefly. He went back to sleep instantly and didn’t even notice me.
“Yes, but he doesn’t know that. He doesn’t know anything except what I told him. And you can’t say anything to Harry or Ron. I need to go now. I have to talk to Remus before Harry goes downstairs to the common room,” I sighed, standing up. I opened their door, which made a long creak. I closed my eyes in frustration.
I made my way back downstairs and sat in front of the fireplace. It’s fire was low and glowing an orange black. I took my wand out and pointed it in front of the fire.
“Engorgio!” I whispered.
The flames exploded but made a beautiful fire. It was big enough to see a face through the fire. I looked around and made sure anyone wasn’t listening in. I stared at the fire and back at the staircase.
“Quaeram fac ut videam facies.”*
“I don’t think that Dora wants that for birthday. What do you get for a girl who can transform into anything?” A familiar voice rang out. Then, I could see his face. My eyes softened.
He ignored me. Or maybe he couldn’t hear me.
“Remus,” I said a bit louder, trying not to attract attention.
He looked to each side of him and still kept talking to whoever occupied the room with him. I rolled my eyes and sighed. Annoyed, I stared directly in the fire and started to shout.
“Remus John Lupin! You look at your goddaughter when she talks to you!”
He stared directly at me then. His eyes widened and then he smiled at the sight of me. I smiled back at him and sighed. I rubbed my eyes and made sure again that no one could see me.
“Victoria! How’s sixth year?”
“Remus, it’s been literally a day, not even. I have nothing to tell you. However, changing the topic, how’s my favorite godfather?”
“He doesn’t know what to get his girlfriend for her birthday. Do you have any ideas?”
“Really, Remus? That’s what you’re going to ask me? I have limited time to talk to you, and you ask me what to get your girlfriend for her birthday?” I laughed lightly.
“Yes, Victoria. I apologize. What did you want to talk about?”
“Did you see the moon last night?” I asked with my face like stone.
His cold eyes stared into mine and shook his head. He, unlike me, feared the moon. Then again, I could tolerate it. I almost felt bad for him, but he felt even worse for me. I wanted to see him face to face, but that was all I could have gotten.
“Unfortunately, no. You see, I can’t really face to moon. If you want to know why, it’s because I can’t forgive it for what it did to me last time. I’ll write you a three page letter if you want.”
“I’d love that. Anything from you or from anyone other than the Malfoys is always great. But I miss you, Remus. When can I see you next?”
“Oh Victoria, I have to go. Dora’s coming and I’m still figuring out a present. I’ll write you as soon as I can. I love you, Victoria.” He looked directly at me.
The fire went out, and I was alone once more. I closed my eyes shut. I gasped for air as I saw my godfather disappear along with the glow of the fire.
“I love you, too,” I whispered.
“Victoria?” Harry’s voice came from above.
I looked up to see him all dressed and ready for classes. I stood up and got my bag. I put my wand in my robe pocket and nodded.
“Let’s go to breakfast before everyone else wakes up,” he smiled.
I made a fake smile and waited for him. As he made his way down the stairs, I thought of my godfather’s voice and kept it in my mind. Dora was keeping happy, and I knew it. Visions of him transforming shook me up when I was younger. But since then, I was much better about him and his condition. But I always loved it when he called it his “furry little problem”.
I had spaced out and came back to reality when Harry tugged on my sleeve. I blinked rapidly and put on a smile. We made our way down to the Great Hall, and I saw my brother with Pansy Parkinson. He had eyed me and led them to Harry. He cocked his head and had a meaningful look in his eyes. I widened my eyes at him, slightly shaking my head and his narrowed. He went back talking to Blaise, leaving me alone for once.
I took a seat next to Harry and looked at the door, waiting for Hermione. It had been so long, that Harry could’ve eaten three eggs, four pieces of toast, and two glasses of orange juice before Hermione and Ron came down from the Gryffindor Common Room. As I saw Hermione walking down the Great Hall, I moved over, close to Harry. She took a seat next to me and Ron sat in front of me. He smiled at me and I gave him a look that said Weasley, I need you to get me out of this awkward person sandwich. He took the hint and perked up.
“Oi, Harry, you have a free period this morning?”
“Yeah, you have a free period too?”
Ron smiled and nodded before he took a large sip of pumpkin juice. Trust me, he was going to need it. As soon as Ron finished breakfast, which was what felt a glacial pace, he took Harry by the arm and dragged him out. When I didn’t see Harry or Ron outside, I finally exhaled my breath. Hermione saw this and turned to me.
“So? How was it spending the night with the famous Harry Potter?”
“Are you making fun of me, or are you being serious?” I knitted my brows.
“A little bit of both, but I’m mostly being serious,” she said as she bobbed her head.
“I was fine, until I basically stubbed my toe on Harry’s trunk. It was awful. Also, I miss my boyfriend. It’s my first year without Fred and George pranking the new first years. Oh I didn’t think I would ever miss that, but it’s fun to see Madam Pomfrey treating all of those sick kids. Remus said that she treated him like a son, so when I told her that I was his goddaughter, she loved me just as much,” I smiled, taking a sip of my orange juice.
I thought about Fred and I. I thought about how much I had missed him and that twin brother of his.
“Victoria? Are you ready to go to Potions? Slughorn is the new teacher this year.”
