I stared at her blankly. “Have I heard what? What’s going on?” She looked like someone had just died or something. Not exactly the most comforting face.
“Lily and Lorcan are dating.”
I froze. “What? Lily and… You mean our Lily? Our Lorcan? That’s not possible. They live to drive each other insane. They would never… Dating?” That meant Lily and Lorcan snogging. I couldn’t imagine the two of them ever snogging. Not without Lily secretly brandishing a knife behind her back. What the hell? “When did that happen?”
“Our Lily and our Lorcan. I can’t believe it either, but it’s true. Lily told me so herself.” She continued with a worried expression still on her face. “They’re going to Hogsmeade together.”
“What about Mason?”
She shook her head. “Oh yeah, like that would stop Lily. She still insists that she hates him. I think this is just a cover, but she seemed really happy about it. I haven’t seen them together yet.”
Lily and Lorcan together. Holding hands. Snogging. “Well… That’s fantastic for them.”
“I’m so sorry, Eva! I tried to tell Lily how much this was going to hurt you, but-”
“It’s fine, Dom. What are you so worried about? They’re allowed to date each other if they want.” I frowned. “Why would I be hurt by this? They can snog each other’s brains out if they want. Lorcan isn’t mine, and you know I’ve never been able to control Lily. No one has.”
“I just meant-”
“I’m fine!” I yelped. “God, don’t make such a big deal over it. It’s nothing. Congratulations to them. I hope they make each other really happy.” Why was she suffocating me? I didn’t give a crap what Lily and Lorcan did or didn’t do together, and I couldn’t stand seeing Dominique standing there staring at me with that wounded puppy dog look on her face. It was ridiculous. I was fine. This was fine. Everything was fine. Bloody fine.
They would end up killing each other after a couple days. There was no way that Lily and Lorcan could ever possibly last as a couple. Hadn’t they spent the last six years at each other’s throats bickering constantly? They were allowed to date if they wanted to, but we all knew it wouldn’t work.
They were disgusting together. Couldn’t they keep their hands to themselves? I was sitting across the table from them at dinner, but I could tell that Lorcan had his hands all over Lily. He kept reaching over and giving her a quick snog every two seconds, and then they would fight over mashed potatoes, or something stupid, and then snog again. Ridiculous.
It didn’t help that Anders looked like he was at the circus or something. You’d think this was the most amusing thing he had seen in his entire life.
“What are you two doing next weekend?” Lorcan asked before kissing Lily’s neck. I hoped a professor would come over and give them both a week’s worth of detention. “Want to meet up at the Three Broomsticks?”
Meet up at the Three Broomsticks? No way in hell. This was Anders and Eva time. We were finally going to have a chance to be alone together. There was no way in hell that we were going to meet up at the-
“We’d love to.” I gave Anders a swift kick under the table, but he only gave me that wounded, confused look. “Sounds like fun.”
About as much fun as getting eaten by a dragon. “Are you sure? You two don’t want to spend some time together alone?”
Lily shook her head. “Oh, you know if I’m alone with this idiot I’m more likely to curse him. I think having a chaperone along would probably be best for his safety. Besides, if I’m giving this whole relationship thing a try, I might as well get the full experience. We should double.”
“Would you mind turning that into a triple date?” Dominique asked. “Tobias is going to meet me in the village.” She added, her cheeks quickly turning pink. They had been exchanging constant letters, but Dom hadn’t seen him since the summer.
I was going to have a lovely, private date with my boyfriend and four other people.
“Eva, are you alright?” Anders asked worriedly as we walked to Hogsmeade. Trailing after Lorly, as I now thought of them, and Dominique… My life is just the greatest.
I gave his hand a squeeze. “I’m perfect. I’m really excited for our super private date together.”
He sighed heavily. “Love, what was I supposed to say? He’s my brother, and he’s already been absent enough lately. I don’t want to chase him off when he finally wants to spend time with us.”
But he did that to you last year. Lorcan had never been afraid to tell Anders the truth, no matter how much he might not like it. “I know, I know. But… I was just really looking forward to finally having you to myself.”
Anders pulled me closer to him. “We’re not going to spend the entire day with them, I promise. I don’t think I could handle watching Lorcan and Lily together for an entire day.”He shook his head. “We’ll still have time alone together. I’ve been looking forward to today too.”
I snuggled up against him. “You have?”
“Hugo isn’t nearly as attractive as you are, and he smells when he plays Quidditch.” He replied. See, I was an incredibly confident girlfriend. I didn’t worry at all about the fact that Anders was on the team with his ex-girlfriend, Helene. He was mine, finally.
“I just want this year to be perfect.”
“You think too much. I’m not a girl, Eva. I don’t need… I don’t know, chocolate and lace. Whatever you like.”
I rolled my eyes. “It’s reassuring to hear that you know so much about girls. I’m so lucky. God, I can hardly wait for Valentine’s Day.”
He stuck his tongue out at me. “Hey, I could tell Lorcan and Lily that we want to spend the entire day with them. Don’t make fun of me. I have a twin brother, and Mum is hardly the best example of a normal woman.”
“Have I told you lately that I love you?”
“That’s more like it.” He kissed my forehead.
Of course it didn’t end up being just a drink. I should have known better. After we left the Three Broomsticks, and were supposed to split up, Lorcan and Lily followed us to Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. At least Dom and Tobias had the good sense to go somewhere else.
“So, that privacy you mentioned…” I whispered, leaning up to reach Anders’ ear.
He shook his head. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think they were going to follow us. We can make a break for it soon. We can still have a good time.”
Anders was probably sick of hearing me complain, but I couldn’t help it. Were they doing this on purpose? Why would they do something like this? Just to annoy me? If they were a real couple, wouldn’t they want some privacy too? Between the two of them I was sure they knew of every alleyway or broom cupboard within the village and the castle.
“Flower!” I quickly changed my mind. Today was going to get excellent. All four of us turned to face Mason King.
Lily dropped Lor’s hand. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“I work at Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes.” He waved a hand around the shop. “This happens to be Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes.”
She shook her head. “You work in Diagon Alley. We’re not in Diagon Alley.”
He winked at her. “I heard that this was a Hogsmeade weekend, and I requested to work at this shop for the day so I could see my flower.”
“I am not your flower!” Lily whined, stomping a foot in frustration. “Mason, this is Lorcan. He’s my boyfriend.”
A wide grin spread across Lor’s face. “This is the infamous Mason King? Pleasure to meet you, mate. God, you’re a genius. I’ve never seen anyone piss Lily off this much before, other than me, and I’ve never had this effect on her.” He stuck a hand out to shake.
Mason blinked in surprise. He had probably been expecting to get beaten up, or at least threatened. “Nice to meet you too, Lily’s boyfriend.” He noticed Anders and I behind them, both watching eagerly. “Hey, Lily’s friend. I don’t think I caught your name the last time we met. And… Bloody hell, there’s another one of you.” He glanced from Anders to Lorcan.
I grinned. “Eva. I’m Eva, and this is Anders. He would be my boyfriend, and Lorcan’s twin.”
“And we’re leaving.” Lily growled.
“Aw, do we have to? C’mon, Flower!” Lorcan pleaded, adopting Mason’s nickname for Lily.
“Don’t call me that! I’m not your flower!” Other shoppers had begun to stop and watch Lily Potter have a meltdown in her uncle’s shop.
Mason cleared his throat. “Um… You said he’s your boyfriend, so I think he should be allowed to call you that. I guess you’re not really dating then, huh? In that case, can I have a shot?”
I swear I thought a banshee was in the shop, Lily let out such a scream of rage. She grabbed Lorcan by the arm and dragged him out, still screaming. He gave a quick wave to Mason before he disappeared around the corner.
“I think that went rather well, don’t you?” Mason glanced at me and Anders, completely unfazed by Lily’s shriek.
“I think my eardrums are crying.” Anders rubbed his forehead. “Did that noise really just come out of Lily? Evs, I think this is our chance to make a break for it before Lor and Lily find us again. We should go.”
I was still staring at Mason. “What do you mean they’re not in a real relationship?” I wanted to know how he could still be so damn optimistic. He wasn’t an idiot. He had to know that Lily hated him. “What…”
“I think Thing Two wants to get out of here before my flower comes back, but you could write to me or something, yeah? Send it to the shop and it will make its way to me. I think we could be good partners in crime.”
After watching Lorcan and Lily be mushy all day, I knew exactly what Mason was talking about. I was going to do whatever it took to get Lily and Mason together. There was no way I was going to sit by and watch Lily be with my Lorcan.
