Lavender was stood at the front of the café. Her red-pink coat was wrapped tightly around her, a kind of head scarf tied around her dark blonde hair. As per usual she was crying, oh of all people why did I have to have an affair with a crackpot!

“I can’t take it and more… I feel so tense, and I have to tell someone” Lavender whispered dramatically.
“Well you’re just going to have to… I’m relying on you and you are not going to spoil my life” By the look on Lavender’s face, you’d have thought that I’d of suggested that she’d give up her job move to southern Brazil and marry Mundungus Fletcher! But no way is she stopping Rose’s wedding.

“Look, you won’t let me leave you, but if I stay with you, you’ll get more and more out of control” I took a deep breath “Either stay with me and keep this a secret or let me go, but let me go quietly! Now I’ll see you at the wedding.” I said with as much venom as I could muster. I quickly turned no wanting to have to argue anymore.

It was the day of Rose and Lysander’s wedding, the excitement in the air was tangible.

The sky was still dark when Hermione woke me up.

“Breakfast” Hermione whispered, as she quickly made the bed.
“Why are we whispering?” I whispered, looking at her calm, but secretly stressed face.

“Well” she whispered back “We have to get ready and so does Hugo and Rose and she will be stressed, the point is that she will be more stressed if nothing is ready so we will get ready before they wake up” Hermione said, she was now hurrying through the door and disappearing.

Groggily I began to get up and pull the suit that was laid at the end of the bed.

Three minutes later I had just finished tying the black bow tie around my neck. Even I was getting nervous and excited. The kitchen was steamy and Hermione was darting around the counter and was somehow managing to make toast without getting anything on the deep navy velvet dress.

“Here you go” She said as she carefully slid a plate piled high with perfectly toasted, buttery toast onto the table in front of me. I couldn’t help looking into her beautiful, exited face, into her smouldering Auburn eyes so deep that it seemed as though I could fall into them and never be seen again, and I couldn’t help but wonder why I’d had an affair, when I could have had an ordinary life, living through ordinary days filled with ordinary moments, that were made beautiful by the women I’d married.

I felt like I should say something like she deserved to be told, after all she’d supported me through my whole life and what had I gone and done? Had an affair with my ex, if I told her maybe she would forgive me, perhaps she would understand… No, not here not now, defiantly not on my only daughter’s wedding day!

Before I could consider changing my mind Hugo slouched down the stairs and slumped down at the table and began eating the toast that was left over. His red-brown hair was spikey and sticking up at all angles and there were dark circles beneath his eyes. He looked like he had been up all night.

“Right I’m going to go and help Rose get ready” Hermione said clapping her hands together “You need to make sure that Hugo is ready to go when we need to go, ok?” I hastily nodded.

“Come on you need to get dressed and then come down here” I instructed Hugo he gave me a bit of a dirty look but proceeded up the stairs and returned a short while later wearing a suit almost the same as mine.
“Sit down” I said with a fake sinister look, Hugo grinned. We had both been given strict instructions that for him to be fully ready Hugo’s hair had to be as tamed as possible. Hermione had even bought some extra strong charmed hair gel for me to use.
“Right” I said scooping a large handful of slippery jelly-like gel.
“I don’t get it” Hugo said while I began to flatten his normally spikey hair with the gel, he continued “I mean, why do we all have to get all dressed up? Is there some law that says that everyone who goes to a wedding MUST be as uncomfortable as possible?”
“Pretty much” I replied as I got another handful of the slimy gel.
“Call me Mr jumping-to-conclusions-to-fast, but you don’t particularly like weddings, do you Dad?”

“No it’s not all weddings” I answered “It’s just, there’s someone coming to the wedding today whom I’m not to chuffed about seeing.” I said while picturing Lavender’s screwed up face.
“Who?” Hugo asked eagerly, he always did like to know things that he shouldn’t.
“Oh, erm” I hastily tried to picture the guest list again and think of who was coming to the wedding “Malfoy” I said hastily.
“Oh, that slick git” Hugo said. “I don’t see why he should be invited, after all he’s only Lysander’s boss”
“To be fair to Lysander I’m inviting my boss so I guess that’s ok…”
We were in silence for the next few minutes while I continued to slick back Hugo’s hair.

There was a thump from upstairs.

“Rose is awake” Hugo said indifferently, Rose was by far the most clumsy person in the world, if she wasn’t falling over then she was knocking someone over and if it wasn’t that then she was knocking something over. In fact I’m not sure it’s a good idea having such a long aisle.

Hermione bustled into the room.

“It’s nearly time to go and Rose is ready” Hermione announced proudly as she opened the door and led Rose in through the door. For the first time in a very long time I felt my breath being taken away.

It was my little girl, who was standing there like an angel. It was my little Rose who was going to get married today. I was starting to feel tears well up in my eyes as I looked at her.

The white straps and top of the dress hugged her body while the skirt of the dress was spilling out across the floor in ripples of delicate satin, like an ivory sea. Every tiny diamond that had been attached to the dresses skirt glistened like a mirror giving the effect that she was shining. Her fiery red hair had been pulled back off her face into a bun leaving nothing but a signal strand of curly red hair in front of her ear, but not enough to cover up the shining diamond earrings. The tiny white roses that were wound artistically into the bun matched those that made up the bulk of the pale white bouquet, which was being gripped by her well-polished fingers. Her rosy red cheeks lit up the rest of her facial features. Her red lips were curled into a nervous smile and her shimmering auburn eyes, which were framed by her long, thick, black lashes, were darting around the room as though she was anxious.

Why? What reason could such a beautiful, heavenly girl have for being worried?

“It’s time to go” she said in a weak voice, finally looking me in the eye.
“We’ll aparate straight to the church” Hermione informed them and without waiting another second she and Hugo were gone. Rose turned to me.
“We need to go… the car is here, you know” she whispered.
“I know I replied” Lysander and I had chosen an old-fashioned white muggle car for the short trip to the church and back again.
It seemed that in no time at all we were in the car and then all too soon we were outside the church.

The three bridesmaids, Lilly, Roxanne and Victoire, were all standing outside the old gothic church, wearing the short and plain white dressed that Lilly, who was the maid of honour had picked out, so as to not outshine the bride, but even if they were all wearing the crown jewels they wouldn’t be able to outshine Rose’s simply beauty.

Now we were inside the church all lined up and ready to go in, time seemed to be rushing too fast.

And then Roxanne was entering. Holding her slightly smaller version of Rose Bouquet up to her chest.

And then Victoire. Even her part veela self could not compare to Rose.

And finally Lilly slipped through the door, with an encouraging backward grin at Rose.

There was no one else.

We were next.

The pair of us took a step towards the door.

Rose tripped and grabbed hold of my arm for support.
Just before we passed through he oak doors into the grand main hall, where we knew hundreds of our close friends and family were waiting.
Rose spoke to me just for a second.

Just quickly.
“Dad, don’t let me fall”

I didn’t need to reply.
She knew very well that I wouldn’t let her fall.

Not now.

Not ever.

We entered the main hall.

Everything was a blur of white roses and smiling faces.
At this point I didn’t care where Lavender was.
I was way too proud of my daughter to even consider thinking of anything else.

The priest’s words all seemed to merge together, until I heard the phrase which signalled for my line quite clearly through the buzzing noise of excitement that was ringing in my ears.
“… and who gives this woman to this man?” The priest asked in a deep booming voice that carried right to the back of the hall.
“I do” I answered as Rose gave me a huge confident smile, which told me everything I needed to know.

“You may now kiss the bride”
Everyone cheered as Lysander lent over Rose and kissed her briefly on the lips.

As I followed the newly married couple back down the aisle, I saw Lavender.

Four rows back on the left side of the aisle, her blank face stood plainly out against all the other happy cheering ones.

The free happy feeling that had swelled like a balloon throughout the ceremony was rapidly disappearing as though someone had punctured the balloon.
