We are heading down to the Great Hall and Natalie says, “Guys I forgot something I will be right there. What’s the password right now Lily?”
“Pumpkin Juice” I reply. She runs back to my room and we continue down the stairs. James is waiting for me at the bottom. He turns and smiles.
“Hi Lily. I love you.”
“I know” I reply again. Natalie appears by my side and passes a package to James. The girls then walk in the hall without me. Ugh.
“This is for you my beautiful birthday girl.” I open it and I am actually stunned by my gift.
“James this is really sweet.”
“I am glad you like it.” He got me a framed picture of the two of us over break. Sirius must have taken it without us looking. We are cuddled up next to the fire and occasionally James will kiss my head or sweetly on the lips. We both look so happy.
“Let’s go sit down” I say. He attempted to hold my hand, but I just could not deal with that at the moment. I sat next to Natalie and felt a bit envious. All of my friends were happy with their boys. I couldn’t ruin tonight for them so I put on a happy face and said, “So when will you guys be sprung?”
“At 8, would you like to have your surprise then?” James said sweetly.
Natalie whispered to me, “Why don’t you, me, and Monique hang out in Gryffindor common room and let Tina and Tony have alone time?”
I hear Natalie giving Tony and I “alone time” which is alone know as “Set up the party to attempt to get James’ butt saved,” the things you do for friends I tell you. We leave the Great Hall and I turn to Tony. He leans in for a kiss.
“Tony, you do know “alone time” was a code right?”
“For what?” He replied.
“We have to help fix James’ mess”
“Why? Because Lily is my best friend and I will not let the two of them break up because of something so dumb that’s why. Don’t worry half way through the party we are supposed to leave anyway to have alone time to leave James and Lily alone.”
“Ok fine.” He said grudgingly. With that we headed off to their room to decorate. Tony wasn’t very helpful, but I got it done in time for 8.
The girls and I hung out and read magazines in the common room. I could tell they were both upset that their boys landed themselves in detention as well, but they were putting on good faces to try to make me have a good birthday.
8 o’clock rolled around and Natalie and Monique said “We have one more surprise”.
They pulled me up and ran me back to my dorm. “What is going on?”
“Just shush and run” Monique replied. I did as she said and we arrived at the portrait. I walked in and there was a party going on. The boys were there and everything was decorated with a mix of Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy Birthday decorations. There was all of my favorite foods all died pink. It was amazing.
“James did it” Natalie whispered and ran off to Remus.
James popped up in front of me and said, “Surprise”
“This is sweet James. Thank you.”
“Anything for you my love,” he replied.
I smiled at him, but I didn’t truly feel happy. I was confused. How can I love someone so irresponsible? I tried to let this thought go and enjoy the party. I ate and drank. I danced with my friends. I danced to one slow song with James to make him happy. We all had a good time. The party was starting to die down around 10 and people were leaving to have their own little Valentine’s Day. Natalie and Remus left last.
“You sure you will be ok Lils?” Nat asked.
“Yea I will” and with that they left. James came up and hugged me from behind.
“I love you” he whispered.
“I know” I reply. I can tell he is desperate to hear me say it, but how can I say it when once again I am fighting an internal battle.
“What would you like to do birthday girl?”
“I think I am going to go dance some more”
“Can I watch?”
“No James I just want to be alone right now. Thank you for everything. Good Night.”
I left without even giving him a kiss. I know it’s killing him. I feel bad, but I don’t know what is going on right now… Only time will tell I suppose…
