Background: Font color:
Lily shuddered as she felt Adam’s hand around her shoulders again. She was more and more nervous around him. Every movement seemed to warrant notice. She lived in a constant fear that Adam was going to poison her with another love potion. Teshi had helped appease her a little by spending time with her even when Adam was around, keeping a watchful eye. She let out a quiet sigh as Adam stood up to chase some pumpkin pie down at the other side of the table. Mistaking her sigh as one of sadness, Adam leaned down and kissed her forcefully on the cheek.
“Don’t worry, darling. I’ll be back before you know it,” he said, grinning widely.
Lily forced a smile and a chuckle before looking down. Teshi grimaced to Lily, and Lily reached for her glass.
“Whoa, watch it, Lils!” Teshi said, grabbing the glass from her. “This might be poisoned. Here.” Teshi poured a new cup for her, and Lily took it gratefully.
“This pretending has got me so nervous. I’m afraid to even eat!” she muttered, running a hand through her red hair. “Where is Bell!” she demanded, pulling at her hair nervously.
“Stop that,” Teshi said, batting Lily’s hand away from her hair. “If you keep this up, you won’t have any hair left by the end of this term.”
Lily dropped her hand immediately, but couldn’t help playing with her fingers. “I thought she said she’d help me with this.”
“Well, she’s gotten back with Remus,” Teshi said, nodding her head towards the couple. The Marauders were sitting quite a bit down, but from where the two of them were sitting, they could see Bell and Remus cuddling together. “Although, I can’t account for this behavior from her. This is more important than she can fathom. I’ll have a word with her in a bit. Oh, Adam’s back,” she whispered, looking away quickly.
“What have you girls been talking about while I was gone?” he asked, settling down with a slice of pumpkin pie.
“We were talking about Charms,” Teshi said quickly.
Adam groaned characteristically, waving his hand in annoyance. “You guys find the most boring things to talk about. Let’s talk about something interesting.”
Lily’s eyes lit up in retaliation, but Teshi shot her a warning look. Lily fell silent as a turmoil of upset feelings bubbled inside her.
Lily and Teshi sat in the Common Room, waiting for Bell’s arrival. When she finally did arrive, she slunk past them, creeping up the stairs. Teshi’s eyes narrowed in annoyance. Having to deal with Adam alone was horrible enough, and now Bell was acting incredibly guilty about it. Well, she’d have to be more forthright.
Tapping Lily’s arm to catch her attention, Teshi pointed to Bell’s retreating figure.
“Shall we?” she asked. Lily nodded, her lips pursed. She was upset that Bell had left her. It was not like Bell to leave her friends all alone.
“Bell, what are you doing?” Lily asked as the two of them arrived in the dormitory.
Bell spun around guiltily, but she recovered quickly. “What do you mean?” she asked, leaning against the bed post.
“I mean, what’s going on with you? I thought you were going to be there for me, watching my back!” Lily demanded, her anger bubbling forth from an entire day of suppressing.
“I...I was preoccupied. I’m sorry,” she said, although she did not sound very sincere.
Teshi stepped forward. “Hey, we said we were all together on this. We were going to find out what Adam was up to with the love potion.”
“We-” Bell paused, looking shocked.
“Come on. It’s not like you just heard this,” Teshi said, rolling her eyes. “I get it. You and Remus are back together, and you’re really happy.”
“We’re happy for you, too,” Lily interjected quickly.
“That doesn’t mean you get to just leave us alone. This is more important, Bell. You know that.”
“Oh...” she trailed off, as if lost in thought, “I’m really sorry. I just...I thought that you’d want me to be happy. I also thought that maybe I’d learn something from the Marauders about it.”
“Why would they know anything about this?” Lily demanded, her mind jumping to James.
“I...I don’t know. I just wanted to see. You know?” Bell said uncertainly.
Teshi sighed, running a hand over her face.
“It’s fine,” Lily said, wanting her friend to be happy, “I’m happy that you’re happy. Just...I could really use your help.”
“Okay, Lily. I will help.”
“Thank you,” Lily said, with a slight smile.
Just as they were about to settle down for some homework, Bell jerked up suddenly, surprising the both of them.
“Are you alright, Bell?” Lily asked with concern as Bell grabbed her bed post urgently.
“What’s the matter?” Teshi asked, standing up to help her.
“Nothing!” Bell said harshly, holding her arm out in front of her to deter them. “I just remembered that I have to ask old Sluggy something about the essay due. I’ll be right back.”
Bell rushed out of the dormitory without another word, leaving her two friends confused.
“Did she...did she call Professor Slughorn ‘Old Sluggy’?” Lily asked, an offended tone in her voice was noticeable. She liked Professor Slughorn. She appreciated his teaching, and she thought he appreciated her willingness to learn.
“She has been a bit off today,” Teshi said, with a slight shrug.
“Still. She likes Professor Slughorn too. Who calls a Professor ‘Old Sluggy’?” Lily asked herself, shaking her head. She shrugged her shoulders, trying to concentrate on her essay. However, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something just wasn’t right.
I groaned as a light hit my eyes for the first time in what felt like forever. I had no idea how long I had been trapped in here. The light never seemed to change, and everything else was too dark for me to make out. Squinting, I watched as the light edged closer and closer to me. Holding up my hand, I blocked the light as best as I could.
“Go get it,” a female voice said from near the light source. I let out a little squeak as a tall, dark figure walked towards me and roughly yanked out a few of my hairs. I yelped as my scalp burned from the encounter. I glared up at the masked man, but he ignored me.
“What do you want from me?” I demanded as the figure walked back into the darkness.
“Nothing much, Bell. Nothing much at all.”
“Then why do you have me locked up here? There’s no need for you to do this! Let me go!”
Somewhere in the dark, there was the sound of a fizzle and a pop. Peering into the darkness, I strained my eyes to see past the wand with the light spilling on to me. I heard someone groan in the background and the wand fell to the ground. Whoever else was there quickly picked up the wand, training it at my face. A few more groans were heard, and then it fell silent.
My heart beat against my rib cage like a drum, and I felt as though I was going to faint from the suspense.
“Who are you?” I demanded to the darkness once more. This time, someone walked into the light. Her face was not covered, and she made no attempt to hide her identity.
“You want to know who I am?” she asked as she walked closer.
I squinted my eyes to get a better look at her, and I felt my heart jump to my throat as it became clearer and clearer to me who was walking towards me. She knelt down beside me and grinned malevolently. It was like a terrifying image out of a horror movie.
“I’m you, Bell,” she said mockingly.
I stared in horror at my own face looking back at me.
