“Trapped in the dark
Slammed all the locks
Death calls my name
And it seems I've been buried alive”
- Buried Alive, Avenged Sevenfold
I have had a hard life. I've seen too much death and experienced too much pain in my life that it had turned me comatose; dead to the world around me, absent of all emotion.
I was seven when my parents were viciously murdered by the people they were fighting for; Death Eaters. They both were in the high ranks of the Death Eaters, serving He-Who- Must-Not-Be-Named, The Dark Lord, or Lord Voldemort, which ever you prefer.
Their murder was kind of an accident. They had taken Polyjuice potion, which turns you into someone else for a complete hour, and turned into a young muggle couple. I wasn't supposed to follow but I did.
They walked over to the lake I use to spend my summers at and they silently crept along the edges of the forest surrounding it. I followed closely behind, to see that they were ease dropping on two figures darkly clothed only a few yards away from us. The two figures didn’t notice as they had their conversation.
"You came alone right?" Spoke a calm bored male voice from the man on the left.
"Of course that was the deal... for now." The second man replied in a much more aggravated voice.
"Ah you’re going to have to wait to kill me Mr. Potter; I still have something you want." The first one said with a nasty voice.
“Yes. Of course. You already know what I want so what do you want in return." The seconded one, Mr. Potter said in return.
"For the safety of your son, what's his name? Oh yes it's James! For the safety of young James Potter, I want information." The first one said still in a boring voice he used before.
"What kind of information do you want? Isn't that why you have Death Eaters to do you bidding for you, Voldemort?" Mr. Potter spat it out with much disgust. He turned a bit so I could finally see his face. He had messy dark brown hair with rounded glasses covering his dark brown eyes. He was very handsome, about my mother and father's age, and then I had finally realized why he looked familiar. He used to come over my house and talk to my parents in the locked den. I only saw him when he walked in and out but he was always very kind to me. I think he and my father were friends at some point in their youth.
"True but it is much more satisfying hearing it out of your begging mouth." Voldemort replied as he too turned around as I stepped on a left. Voldemort had a very handsome face. He had dark brown hair that was neatly groomed in place and paper pale skin. His eyes were dark and hungry. Voldemort was playing with his wand that was clenched in his hands. His long fingers were stroking the side of his wand. He looked about late thirties or early forties.
"Fine, what is it?" Mr. Potter asked in defeat.
I know one of my Death Eaters has betrayed me. He or she ran off to the Order and is slipping information. I want to know who it is and I know you know who this is, so don't try to protect them by lying, or you and your family will perish." Voldemort responded with anticipation.
Mr. Potter looked fearful of telling the secret. He bit his lip and his eyes were moving from the forest to the lake. Suddenly my father raised his wand and shot a green blinding curse and the two of them from his hiding place.
"I told you to come without your little Order friends." Voldemort growled. "I guess the deal is off." He shot a spell as Mr. Potter and the ground by his feet irrupted into flames.
My mother then ran out into the opening and started shooting thousands of different colored curses in any direction, flames dancing around her. One hit Mr. Potter sending him flying backwards which he got up easily and stared fighting my father who just fighting defensively. Voldemort shot two precise green colored spells at both of my parents and they stopped moving.
Time seemed to stop as they fell to the ground. The flames extinguished as Mr. Potter Disapparated, leaving my parents’ dead bodies and Voldemort alone in the clearing. I started to cry softly as I watched Voldemort start muttering a slivery gray spell of smoke as it soaked into their bodies and then he too Disapparated with what looked like a satisfied grin.
Suddenly I was alone. I walked into the clearing and kneeled down beside them both and crying as I looked into their glassy eyes. They lay unmoving next to each other.
My father's hair was starting to turn back to black and grow out from the muggle's blonde short one. His eyes changed back from brown to a familiar stunning blue. He grew taller and widened out a bit to his original frame.
My mother also changed back, her dark long straight brown hair changing from the short copper curly one of the muggle's. Her kind brown eyes changed from the muggle's light green eyes that looked like the inside of a green grape. She shrunk back to her small, petit frame.
My father locket caught my eyes. I was his most prized possession. The locket was gold and was covered with a triangle with a circle inside with a line going vertically though the circle. It was the symbol of the Deathly Hallows, which were stories my father read to me when I was going up. Inside was a picture of my mother and father on their wedding day and my father and me together. I took it off his neck and suddenly his hands reached up and grabbed mine painfully tight. I screamed and tried to fight back as both my mother and father's dead ice cold hands tried to drag my into the depths of the water. They both were advancing on me and had me more the half way in.
One, two, three, four, and five pops reached my ears but I am pretty sure there were more. One muttered a spell I couldn't hear and a hot flame surrounded me as my parents’ dead bodies left me and submerged into the water without disturbing the surface. A pair of new hands, warmer than before, lifted me out of the water and settled me onto a log while I still clutched the locket in my hands. It was the only thing that mattered to me at the moment. A warm fuzzy blanket was put around me but I couldn’t have felt colder.
I clenched my eyes shut as I heard a bunch of commotion around me. I felt someone sit beside me and put their hand on my shoulder. I opened my eyes to see a handsome red haired man who looked about 20. This was my godfather Alastor Moody. I embraced him into a hug and buried m face into his chest.
"My dearie, please tell me what happened here?" Alastor spoke in a calm controlled voice.
"He k-killed them." I mumbled in between sobs.
"Who?" He asked calmly.
"V-Volde- Voldemort." I quivered looking up at him.
Alastor stood up and started barking out commands. He went to go and observe the scene, while a woman with short dark brown or black hair kneed down next to me with tear soaked eyes.
"I'm Dorea Potter, Charlus Potter’s wife. I was best friends with your mother. We went to Hogwarts together." she said simply as she raised her wand. "I need to extract the memory of what happened, is that okay? All I need is for you to think of from the time you left the house to now. Don’t worry everything will be alright.”
From there I was taken from the scene to Alastor's apartment where I now have been staying after my parent's tragic death.
For a year I never recovered. Nightmares invaded my sleep and I was a zombie. Dark circles became a part of my everyday look. A smile rarely cracked on my face. Only once in a while my old self would shine through and that was when I was in the company of my best friend from birth, Sirius Black.
Our fathers, Ares Redwood and Orion Black, were both in Slytherin together when they went to Hogwarts and they were best of friends. They graduated together, went to each other’s weddings, and were their when the other's child was born. They were virtually inseparable, so assumedly so were Sirius and I. We became the best of friends along with his brother, Regulus. Everything was excellent between us until my parents’ death anniversary.
I sobbed quietly; making sure no one could hear me, as I sat in the park in front of the Black family residence. Someone sat on the bench next to me and I instantly knew that it was him, Sirius. I lunged at him and hugged him which we returned. We sat there for a few minutes him silence.
"What's wrong Nikki?" He asked me with confusion. I didn't give a reply but he already knew the answer from me not responding. "On it's been a whole year hasn't it." he replied with a sigh of my guess boredom
"Why do you say it like that?" I asked confused, tears still running down my face.
"I just... I don’t know. I guess what I mean is, when are you going to get over it?" he asked as if it were my entire fault.
"I will never get over it. They were my parents and I loved them. I could never really get over them." I plead in hopes that he understood.
"But they were Death Eaters. They killed innocent people." He said as he raised his voice slightly. “My parents were talking about Death Eaters. They kill muggles and muggle-borns for being different.”
"That doesn't mean I didn't love them. They were still my parents. I loved them, they loved me.” I begged almost. I wanted to stop this conversation at once.
"But they were monsters and probably deserved to die anyways! After all they have done I'm not surprised if they go to Hell!" He yelled and then his sliver eyes widened in horror as he realized what he said. "Niks, I didn't mean that! You know that."
I got up and ran away without a look at my best friend, who broke my heart, my trust, and what was left of my happiness. I vowed to forget him.
After that I never interacted with anyone other than ministry officials and Alastor. He even went as far as teaching me spells that would be taught at Hogwarts and even some that wouldn't. He was lucky I was a fast learner because we zoomed through years’ worth of spells. By the end of the summer before I went to Hogwarts I knew enough spells to be a fifth year.
When it was time to go to Hogwarts, Alastor dropped me off at the platform and Disapparated.
I searched the train for an open compartment, but so far all were full. I continued down the train gazing through the window, seeing boys and girls from the age of 11 to the age of 18, in black robes many with different color insignias. Blue from Ravenclaw, yellow for Hufflepuff, red for Gryffindor, and green for Slytherin. A door opened and a girl with dark red curls and a boy with greasy black hair emerged with frowns on their faces.
“Sorry about those jerk Sev.” The red hair said addressing the boy. They walked on without out a glance towards me. I looked into the compartment they left from and I saw two boys my age.
The first boy on the right had dark brown almost black hair that was messy and untidy. He wore round rimmed glasses that cover his hazel eyes. He was laughing with the other boy and for some reason he seemed very familiar to me.
The other boy had ebony black hair that reached his nose but unlike the greasy haired boy from before, his didn’t look dirty or greasy; it was clean and somewhat attractive. He had gray stormy orbs for eyes that lit up like a lightning strike every time he laughed. He also seemed familiar to me, so I decided to go in.
I slowly opened the door and they turned to look at me. “Um is there room in this compartment?” I asked quietly.
“Oh yes, there is room.” Glasses responded. I nodded my head and sat by the window on Glasses’ right.
“Are you a first year too?” Glasses asked. I nodded my head. “I am James. James Potter, future Gryffindor.” He said smiling proudly.
James Potter. That rang a bell. I thought back to the night of my parents’ death. His father was begging for his son’s life and ended up getting my parents murdered. Anger boiled with in me but then I thought about it. It’s not his fault. It’s his fathers. James wasn’t there and probably knows nothing about it.
“Hello.” I mumbled quietly, making gray eyes laugh.
“Are you a muggle-born?” Gray eyes asked me suddenly.
“No, I’m a pureblood. Why?” I asked defensively, crossing my arms over my chest.
“Never mind.” He said but continued to watch me for a second. His eyes suddenly doubled in size and his mouth gaped open at me.
“Hey? Are you okay?” James asked his friend.
However his friend ignored him and instead continued watching me before finally mumbling, “Nikki?”
My own eyes opened and I realized that it was Sirius Black. I don't know why I didn't see it before but there he was before me. My eyes transformed into daggers and rage started to fill up inside me.
“Sirius Black?” I managed to hiss out making both of the boys jump.
“So it is you Nikki.” Sirius said looking hopeful.
“Don’t say another word to me unless you want your tongue cut out and chopped into a million pieces.” I snapped jumping up from the seat and fled from the compartment before tears threatened to fall from my eyes.
I finally settled myself in a compartment with some older Gryffindors as they paid no mind to me. I figured I would never come in much contact with them anyways, especially since I run away from my problems instead of face them.
Seeing the boy I could count on before the incident filled me up with so much rage and suddenly I found myself in the Great Hall about to be sorted.
I paid attention as the Sorting hat sang its song to all about the different houses and their attributes then Professor McGonagall, who is the transfiguration professor called everyone up one by one.
"Black, Sirius." she retorted as he strutted to the hat. It was put on his hat and we waited. To first years and Slytherin students combined jumped in shock. First years for the fact that the Hat would scream the name of a house you were sorted in and the Slytherins and myself that it yelled, "GRYFFINDOR!” A member of the Black family being sorted into a house considered for 'Blood-traitors" and Muggle-borns (Mudbloods) has automatically asked for punishment. I feared for him but then I remembered that I don't care about him.
He walked over to the cheering table as he received a great boo and screaming from the Slytherins including his two cousins Bella and Cissy then the sorting continued. The red head was called up whose name I now know as Lily Evans was put into Gryffindor as well as James Potter.
Then it was my turn, "Redwood, Nikki." I walked up and clambered onto the stool and the hat was put on my head and it covered my eyes from the Great Hall. In the back of my head came a voice that belonged to the sorting hat.
"Ah a Redwood! I remember sorting in all your family into Slytherin. Is that where you would like to go?" he asked.
"Um I don't really know, could you tell me my options?" I asked in fear. I didn't think the sorting hat asked where you wanted to go. Maybe its because I have no real home or family to stake claim to, except Moody but I doubt he cares. As long as it's not Slytherin.
"Someone wasn't listening to the song now were they? Well you see you are a tough one because you would fit into all houses, you’re honest and kind like a Hufflepuff, you’re smart and quick like a Ravenclaw, you’re brave and loyal like a Gryffindor and you’re determined and talented like a Slytherin. So I will put you where what you need most to become alive is and that is in GRYFFINDOR!" yelled out the hat as it was lifted off my head. I headed toward the cheering table and avoided all the people from my year and ended up sitting next to, two older boys.
Sev, the boy with greasy black hair from before whose name is really Severus Snape got called up and I looked over, down the table, at Lily Evans to see her crossing her fingers but he was put into Slytherin instead. Not that I paid much attention as my mind went through those last words the hat said to me. 'So I will put you where what you need most to become alive is...’
As months passed I became accustom to Hogwarts life, breakfast, classes, lunch, classes, homework, dinner, and sleep. I fell into a cycle but never made friends with anyone in my house or any of the houses. A couple of older Slytherins would come and talk to me but I didn't ever listen. It wasn't until I made my best friend that I grew to love Hogwarts.
Potion's class ended and we left the dungeons and headed for lunch. James and Sirius accompanied by a boy with sandy hair named Remus Lupin and another smaller one with light brown hair named Peter Pettigrew. The four of them walked ahead of me and turned the corner. I was stopped and then stuck talking to a fifth year Lucius Malfoy, who was a prefect, about how I hould find trust in someone before it was too late but I managed to escape and nearly ran to James Potter's back as him and his three companions taunted something or someone in front that I couldn't see. I then managed to see through his arms it was Lily Evans.
"Oh did poor little Evans drop her books?" James cooed.
"Where is poor Snivellus to help you?" Sirius mimicked the coo.
"Shut up and leave me alone!" Lily yelped from the floor.
I couldn't take it anymore and cleared my mind. I pushed passed James and Sirius and bent down and helped Lily pick up her books. Then I stood up and turned around to face all four for them.
"Why don't you pick on someone your own size." I said coolly.
"Not as fun." James replied.
"So you find fun in torturing small girls or just muggle-borns?" I asked, "Because if it is one of the two, or both you can probably get yourself a spot as a death eater, Potter, oh, and you too Black you can join your family and make then real proud."
"What? I would never do that!" James yelled, but I just brushed him off.
"You could have fooled me back there." I say pointing to Lily who was now on her feet. "Want to head to lunch to together?I’m so hungry I could eat a Hippogriff!" I asked Lily as I turned towards her.
"Sure that sounds nice." She said smiling as we walked off leaving the four in silence.
Four years have passed. I made the Gryffindor Quidditch house team as seeker, managed to get all O's in my classes, and obtained four solid friends, Lily Evans, my now best friend, Sapphire Monroe, who is also one of our dorm mates, Severus Snape, who is Lily's best friend from before Hogwarts, and my best guy friend, Regulus Black, Sirius's younger brother by a year.
