Plus, Lily and Dominique would have both murdered me in my sleep. Actually, most of the Weasley family probably would join in since they all felt the need to meddle.
“Look at you.” Lily smirked. “Now you’re using your clothes to express your attitude. You’re evolving.” She said proudly, eyeing my outfit. Any other day she would have bothered me about it for hours, but today even getting me to go required enough effort.
I had on my loosest sweater, and the ugliest pair of jeans that I owned. They had some sort of stain on the right knee that I could no longer place. I had on no makeup, and my hair looked like I hadn’t bothered to brush it that morning. I was a vision.
“I’m not going to talk to him.” I declared, crossing my arms in front of my chest.
“You got him a birthday present.” Dominique reminded me, gesturing to the two packages that were on Victoire’s bed.
I glared at her. “It would be rude to not bring anything.”
“You’re insane. Absolutely insane. Can we leave already?” Lily whined, dancing around a bit impatiently. She exchanged a look with Dominique.
“You better not be plotting.”
Dominique widened her eyes. “Lily, what should we do about Plan Delta Pirate Lightning Storm? Do we need to leave our ski masks and grappling hooks behind?”
“And you say that I’m the insane one.” I rolled my eyes as I stomped past them down the stairs. Bill and Fleur were apparating us to the Scamander’s.
The twins had grown up in a castle in Dorset. Their great-grandfather, Newt, had purchased it sometime during the 1930’s with the profits from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and his family had been living in it ever since. The homes of my friends made my house seem rather boring in comparison. The twins grew up in a castle, Dominique in a cottage by the sea, and Lily lived in what the magazines referred to as a Palladian mansion. It had a massive circular porch in front, on both stories. I loved the curved staircase inside the front hall. Lily’s house reminded me of the pictures I had seen of homes in the American south, with its white walls and columns. American south meets Naboo. Yes, I watch the Star Wars movies. My cat named after Cat Woman wasn’t enough of a hint that I’m a nerd?
The Scamander’s castle looked like the sort of place where you expected a Jane Austen heroine to live. There was a slightly foreboding brown brick gate in front of it, and the walls were a dingy grey-brown. It had twenty chimneys sticking out of the roof. We had counted them once when we were younger. There was a sweeping lawn in front of the castle, and the gardens behind it were extensive. Of course they were full of the sort of plants that only Luna Lovegood Scamander would have. Supposedly it contained the largest Dirigible Plum collection in existence.
Luna herself was waiting outside to greet us. She was absolutely mad, but I adored her. “Oh, Evangeline!” She gave me a quick hug. “You look rather disturbed. Nargles?”
I shook my head. “No Nargles, I promise. I’ve… I’ve just been getting over a cold.”
She tilted her head slightly. “I’m certain it must be Nargles! Lysie has been suffering from the same problem.” Only Luna called him Lysie. I really should be used to it by now, but I still had difficulty holding back giggles. It sounded like lice. “I’ve always said that Hogwarts has a Nargle problem, but no one will ever listen to me. Come in! The twins will want to see you.”
I doubted that.
“Thanks Mrs. Scamander!” Lily said quickly before dragging me along behind her. She had a frighteningly strong grip.
“Eva!” Lorcan called from the end of the hall, hurrying over. “You came.”
I nodded. “I think so. I could always be just a figment of your imagination, but I’m pretty sure I’m actually here.” Dominique and Lily remained by my side, but both took a step back. They pretended to start up a conversation in order to make it seem like Lorcan and I had some privacy. “I wouldn’t miss your birthday.”
He ran a hand through his hair. “You look good.”
I snorted. “I look like crap. I was trying to look like crap. Your mum thinks I’m getting attacked by Nargles.” He looked like… Crap wasn’t the word I would use. Lorcan had always been, and would always be a great dresser.
“Evs, I’m not talking about what you’re wearing.” He said, looking me in the eyes. “You always look good. You’re… You’re beautiful.”
I looked down at my feet. “I… This is for you.” I suddenly remembered the gifts in my arms. I shoved a box at Lorcan. I wasn’t the gift giver that he was. Lor was also impossibly hard to shop for. Finally, I’d ended up getting him gift certificates for Honeydukes and Weasley Wizard Wheezes, as well as a framed picture of the two of us from earlier in the year. Back when things had been easier.
“I erm… I need to go.” I mumbled. My plan was to never stay anywhere for long. If I kept moving, it would be harder for Anders to find me. If he wanted to find me. Lorcan stared at me with a confused look on his face as I scampered away.
“Where are we going?” Dominique demanded as she tried to keep up with me.
I shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m on the move. It’s… What did you call it? Plan…”
“Plan Delta Pirate Lightning Storm.”
“Right. This is my Plan Delta Pirate Lightning Storm. Stay on the move and stay on guard.” I glanced over both my shoulders.
“You’re incredibly neurotic, you know. You look like you’re about to have a nervous breakdown.” Lily pointed out, rolling her eyes. “What are you so worried about?”
“I’m not neurotic. I’m being sneaky. This is Eva in stealth mode. You’re not impressed?”
“What’s in here?” Dominique asked, opening a door on our right. What the hell was she doing?
“Why are you-”
Lily let out a scream. “Oh my god what is- Petrificus totalus!” She yelped as she shoved me forward suddenly. The next thing I knew I was in a broom cupboard with the door being shut on me, incapable of movement.
I hated them both. I fell over on my face with a loud thud. I couldn’t even talk, or better yet, scream at them for doing this to me.
“You’re standing guard, right?” Dom asked.
There was a soft thud as Lily presumably leaned up against the door. “I figured I could do my nails while I wait.”
“Cool. I’ll be right back.” Dom announced before I heard the sound of footsteps.
How long were they planning on leaving me in here for? Where did Dom think she was going? What, was she going to go get snacks for them to eat while they stood out there and laughed at the thought of their poor friend Eva trapped inside of a broom cupboard? If there were spiders in here I was going to kill them.
I didn’t know how much time passed before I heard footsteps again. This time it sounded like there were two pairs. Maybe someone was going to come along and rescue me.
“She’s in there.” No, that was Dominique’s voice.
The door opened, and I squinted as the sudden light burned at my eyes, which had gotten used to the dark. I heard the door lock itself, and then Lily and Dominique left.
“Finite incantum,” someone said softly. I scrambled to my feet. “Eva…”
I fell silent. Damn Lily. Damn Dominique. I hoped all their hair and teeth fell out, and they broke both their arms and legs and… Suffered. Suffered a lot. They deserved it after locking me in here with Anders.
Did I have to say anything to him? Couldn’t I just stand here, silently, for however long it took until we got out of here? I didn’t have anything to say to him anymore.
“I’m sorry.” Anders murmured.
Like I hadn’t heard that before a million times this year.
“What happened at the match… that wasn’t supposed to happen. You weren’t supposed to see that.”
“Helene is your girlfriend. You shouldn’t be ashamed to be seen with her in public. Really, I could care less what the two of you two.” No, I didn’t. It had almost killed me. He knew, he knew. He was sadistic and cruel and… I hated him.
“Really, you think I care about you far too much. I don’t. I don’t care about you anymore, Anders. What Lorcan told you was all just a lie. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I don’t have feelings for you, because that would mean that I was actually hurt by seeing Helene kiss you. By seeing your girlfriend kiss you. Your girlfriend who isn’t me.”
He pressed a finger to my lips, and I froze. “Helene isn’t my girlfriend.”
I pulled away from his touch. “Oh, so now you’re just whoring around.” Why the hell had Lorcan said that Anders was better for me than he was? How on Earth could this boy possibly be good for anyone?
“Bloody hell, Eva, just let me talk!” Anders snapped. He took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to… That didn’t… I’m trying to explain myself, and you won’t let me.” Because I was sick of lies and half-assed apologies. “Helene isn’t my girlfriend anymore. After Lorcan talked to me… I didn’t get time to break things off with her before the match. I was going to talk with you after, and tell you… I swear I didn’t beg the girls to bring you there to see that. I had no idea that Helene was going to kiss me like that.”
“It wasn’t the first time.”
“I think we all know that I’m an idiot.” He reached for one of my wrists, causing me to flinch. “Eva, I wanted to talk with you that day about what Lorcan said.”
So he could laugh in my face? “We don’t have to do that. We really don’t have to do that.”
“Yeah, we do. Would you please just stop pulling away all the time?” Anders pleaded.
My eyes widened. “I’m the one pulling away? Me? What do you call this entire year? You’ve never been there, Anders. What excuse are you going to come up with now? You’ve got a pretty large list of excuses.”
“I’m not going to give you another excuse.” He stated calmly. “You’re right. I’ve given you enough of those. I’ve been an ass this year, and there’s no excuse for that. But Evs, I promise you, I’m never going to pull away again. You don’t deserve that and… I can’t do that anymore.” He sighed. “Your parents don’t love each other, and you’re scared of ending up just like them. But that’s not going to happen.”
“Don’t tell me how I do or don’t feel.” I snarled. “You don’t know anything about me.”
“Then how about I tell you how I feel?” Anders retorted, his voice rising slightly. “I love you, Eva.”
I took a step backwards. No, no, no. I couldn’t have heard that right. I was delusional. This whole conversation had probably not even taken place. I was imagining it all. Being stuck in this dark, dusty broom cupboard was doing things to my mind. Anders wasn’t actually here. It was all just a hallucination. That’s what it was. There was no possible way that Anders had just declared his love for me.
“Now who’s dictating the other one’s feelings?” He took a step closer. “I’m in love with you, Eva. I only started dating Helene because you were with Lorcan. You weren’t interested in me, I thought, and you had every reason to feel that way. But… I love you.”
“Prove it.” I retorted.
His lips were on mine almost before I finished my sentence. Anders was kissing me like we were the last two people left on the Earth. He slipped one arm around my waist to pull me closer, and the other rested on the back on my neck.
He loved me. He loved me. He loved me. Anders. Lysander “Anders” Scamander. The dork that I had grown up with, who was obsessed with Quidditch. The smartest boy in our year, and the sweetest. The boy who would get me soup when I was sick, and made sure I got everything I wanted every meal time. The boy who would let me hide in his bedroom when Lily was occupied with a boy. I inhaled deeply, smiling at the familiar scent that lingered on everything that Anders owned. Orange and cinnamon. Spicy, yet sweet. Sort of like our relationship.
“I haven’t forgiven you just yet. Don’t think that you’re off the hook this easily.” I murmured, a smile on my face. It’s pretty damn hard to be mad at a boy who just told you he loved you, and then snogged you rather senseless.
“Of course not. I wouldn’t expect any less from the Queen of Grudges.” Anders whispered before planting a soft kiss on my neck. “I need to stop thinking with my broom. I should have done this months ago.”
I giggled. “You really should have.” I stood on my tip toes to even out the difference between our heights. “So… You broke up with Helene?”
He nodded. “She wasn’t happy about it, but I think she understood. She was great, but… She wasn’t you. I was a really crap boyfriend. There was a certain dork I couldn’t stop thinking about…”
I smacked him hard on the arm. “Dork?”
“Bloody hell. Was that really necessary?” He winced slightly.
“Like I said, I haven’t forgiven you yet. Besides, you ruined your sweet-talking by calling me a dork. Not what any girl wants to hear.”
He kissed my forehead. “What if I call you my dork?”
I paused, pretending to contemplate it. “Well, then I’d have to wonder what happened to your manliness, you cheese ball.”
Don’t think that I went easy on Anders. I was far from it. I still muttered disapproving things at him all the time. But… I wanted him enough that I wasn’t going to let him get away again. And he didn’t seem to be that bothered by my anger.
Things between us were surprisingly happy, despite my remaining grudge. We were together finally, and it was hard for both of us to not be thrilled by that.
Lily and Dominique were incredibly pleased with themselves, and wouldn’t shut up about how they were they reason that we had finally gotten together. They both thought that they were matchmakers now. Idiots. I loved them though, even if they drove me insane most of the time.
Lorcan… Well, Lorcan wasn’t as happy as they were. He would get over it, though. He would move on to the next girl, and he would forget that he was ever bothered by me and Anders. That was the way he worked. Just because he had managed to settle with me didn’t mean that he wasn’t still the same Lorcan as always. He just needed time. I was sure that by the beginning of the next year he would be completely over it.
Author's Note: This was originally two chapters, because I completely fail at counting. Since I said before that Chapter 22 was the last one of the first part of White Blank Page, I figured it was a good idea to not drag this out any longer than was necessary. Anyways... I hope you guys have enjoyed the first 23 chapters of White Blank Page! After this I'll be putting up the first chapter of James' story, and then it's on to the second half of WBP! The story is no where near over!
