When I woke up next, the room felt oddly cool. The air smelled differently somehow, very, very clean. This was not our apartment.... I opened my eyes to a brightly lit room. Around my bed were curtains. Was I in St. Mungos? I heard voices outside.
“She’s still asleep,” I heard a small, gentle voice say. Daphne?
“That’s good. The doctor said she should rest because her body just basically gave up....” a male voice replied. Andre.
My body gave up? My hand shot down to my stomach. My baby? I could still feel the small bump. There was no blood. My baby was alright, I concluded.
“But why?” I heard my mother’s pained voice ask.
“She wasn’t taking care of herself -” Daphne’s voice was cut off by footsteps approaching. No one said anything as the other person entered the hallway.
“Is she okay?” the voice asked hurriedly. Draco!
“She’s fine,” Andre replied curtly.
“Why the fuck didn’t anyone call me?” Draco asked, angrily.
“We didn’t think it was necessary. We’re all here,” Andre said cooly.
“Not necessary?” Draco bellowed, “I’m her fucking husband, how can you say calling me wasn’t necessary?!”
“Draco, calm down, please, Astoria’s sleeping....” Daphne said softly.
“Besides, you’re one of the reason’s she’s here in the first place,” Andre spat.
“Yeah. The doctors said she was severely undernourished because she wasn’t taking her potions properly and that her body was under a lot of emotional stress. Why the fuck do you think she was under emotional stress?” Andre said.
“Fuck....” Draco whispered, “This is all my fault... fuckkk....”
“Draco, don’t say that,” Daphne replied reasonably, “It’s not.”
“Yeah, well if I had taken care of her like I should have, none of this would have happened!” he replied angrily.
“Draco, you know as well as I do Tori has a mind of her own. She wouldn’t let you ‘take care of her,’” Daphne said. No one spoke for a few moments.
“Mate, she told me what you said to her. Do you really love her?” Andre asked, his tone different.
I didn’t hear Draco reply.
“She loves you, too. She loves you more than anything. But you have to understand that seeing you with Melanie killed her inside....” Andre continued.
“I know. You think I don’t know that? You think I don’t wish every single moment that I hadn’t done that?” Draco spat.
“Tell her how you feel, Draco,” Daphne said gently, “She deserves happiness. You deserve happiness.”
I must have drifted off to sleep again, because the next time I woke up, Draco was sitting in a chair next to my bed, his head resting on the bed and his hand in one of mine. It was now dark in the room. It must have been nighttime. How long was I asleep?
His face didn’t carry the usual, peaceful expression it usually did. Instead, his eyebrows were furrowed together, his face was etched with worry, he seemed restless. I watched him for a few more minutes before he stirred.
“You’re awake!” he whispered, blinking groggily.
“Fuck, I was so worried,” he replied, shaking his head, “How are you feeling?” His face was gentle and kind, carrying the expression he had used only when looking at baby Scoripius’s photos.
I thought about it for a second. How was I feeling? “Okay,” I nodded finally, “Tired, but okay.”
“You scared the living shit out of all of us,” he said solemnly.
“Sorry,” I frowned.
“No, don’t be sorry. I should be the one saying sorry....” he took my other hand in his other hand and looked into my eyes.
“Draco, you don’t have to say anything. It’s fine, really...” I said, thinking back to Andre’s words about Melanie.
“No. I fucked up. I promised myself that I would do everything to make this marriage and raising our child go smoothly and I fucked up before it even started....”
“Let me talk, Tor. I wanted so badly for everything to go okay because of you. You changed me, Tor. I used to watch you in awe because you’re such an incredible person. You’re so energetic and full of life, and I just wanted to take it all in. I wanted to be a part of your world, I wanted to be a part of your happiness... But instead all I did was fuck it up. I’m sorry... I don’t know how to do anything right. I don’t know how to hold on to something good, I don’t know how to hold on to something as amazing as you,” he whispered, his eyes wet with tears.
“Draco... that’s not true...”
“It is. You changed me. I wanted so badly to be a good person, to be worthy of you, to be worthy of our son, to be the perfect husband and father.... I’m so sorry, Tor. I understand if you don’t want to be with me and can’t even think about having a relationship with me. I understand.”
I looked at him for a long while. Here he was, laying himself out in the open for me. His pain, his worry, his hurt, all out for me to see. “Andre... told me about Melanie and... how she is,” I started slowly, “And I know it wasn’t all your fault.”
He nodded, “We... we met through our families ages ago. I hadn’t seen her for years and then she came for a visit about a year ago. She had changed so much. She was amiable and funny and seemed to say all the right things. We hit off right away. But before I knew it, she became suspicious and overbearing and just... odd. So I told her we couldn’t be together anymore. She seemed fine with it at first... but then she came back one night, and she said she knew secrets about my family and she would tell everyone. And I believed her. I’m so ashamed of it now, but I believed she really knew things that would destroy my family. And so I pretended I wanted her back, that I loved her, that I wanted to be with her. Once she found out we were getting married, she threatened to.... hurt you.”
My eyes grew wide in shock. He had actually done all of this to protect me?
“I.. I played along with her because I couldn’t stand the thought of anyone hurting you or our son. I meant to protect you, never to hurt you. But I screwed up. I fucked up and I made you hate me. I’m sorry,” he shook his head.
“I forgive you,” I said honestly.
“Really?” he asked, raising his eyebrows.
“Really,” I nodded, “Because you’re not a bad person, Draco. You never meant to hurt me, I know that now. And.... I love you...” I said finally.
He didn’t reply, but instead got off the chair and leaned into me slightly. He kissed me gently on the lips and pulled away. His gray eyes looked into mine, for once they were completely open and honest. He put his forehead to mine for a second, gazing into my eyes the whole while. This was my bliss, this was my family, this was my home now.
“Oh good, you’re awake!” a blonde haired Healer came rushing into my room. Draco pulled away and gave my hand a small squeeze.
“She’s awake?” I heard an excited voice say from outside. In an instant, Daphne, Mum, Dad, Chay and Andre were all crowded around my bed, all asking me questions at once.
“Guys, guys! I’m fine. Calm down,” I smiled at them. I still had one of Draco’s hands in mine.
“Oh my, Tor, you scared us all so much,” my mother gushed, leaning down to kiss me on the forehead.
Daphne nodded in agreement, “I’m so glad you’re alright, Tor. That was so scary!” Her face was tired and her eyes puffy, like she had been crying.
“How.. how long was I out?” I asked, looking around the circle of people around me.
“About... 18 hours,” Andre said, frowning.
“18 hours? That means none of you slept the whole time?” I exclaimed.
They all nodded solemnly. In that moment, I could feel it, their intense love for me. I was not alone, I was surrounded by people that loved me more than anything.
The next 2 days, they all took shifts sitting by my bed and keeping me company, seeing as the Healer’s weren’t very chatty. I enjoyed Andre’s shift because he told me stories of how old ladies in the waiting room were trying to chat him up. I said I didn’t blame them because he did look like an old man. Daph simply held my hand and recounted stories of our childhood. Mum was just Mum, Dad wasn’t one for talking much.
My favorite shifts were Draco’s though. I loved the way he looked at me, like I was some sort of magical creature instead of plain old Tor.
“You know,” I said one day, eating the Jell-O I had been given as a snack.
“Yes?” he asked, looking at me with his beautiful gray eyes.
“You missed your chance to walk out. You’re stuck with me now,” I made a face at him.
“Who said I minded?” he smiled, taking both my hands in his and kissing them gently.
I giggled. “You know. I can be quite a handful. An annoying handful.”
“And I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he smiled at me, “I’m yours, forever.”
A/N: Awww, I know, super sappy. There's going to be an epilogue after this, so Draco and Tor's story is not over yet! And finally, we see Draco's not the person we assumed him to be in the last few chapters, yay! As always, please leave your thoughts in a review. Thank you!
