“From what you’re telling me I’m not surprised” He said calmly.

“Come on – don’t you think that it’s a little odd?” I asked him.

“What? That the Carrow's want to punish us themselves? No, I don’t”

“Not that Neville, you’re missing the point” I told him slapping my leg lightly. “That Snape asked Hagrid to take us on a detention with him”

“Oh”

“Snape hate’s us and he gives us an easy detention, considering we stole from his office”

“I guess so” he said unconvinced.

“You don’t think so do you?” I asked him.

“Not really – Snape’s a coward, he probably thinks that the Forbidden Forest is really scary. And he doesn’t think much of Hagrid so he’d think that we’d be scared”

“No!” I said getting a little frustrated. “Snape gave us the easy option and I can tell it’s bothering the Carrow's and he knows it”

“Well yeah but –” he went to say when I cut over him.

“Something odd is going on – it’s like he doesn’t want us in pain” he whispered. “You don’t think that – No, no that’s crazy” I said shaking the thought out of my head.

“Look I think that it just happened that way and it’s a coincidence” he said.

“Yeah – yeah I guess you’re right” I said becoming a little more convinced.

“Have you got anymore bright ideas for the D.A or are you just going to let yourself get in trouble again?” Zacharias sat down beside me and I growled at him.

“That was your fault – don’t blame it on Ginny” Neville snapped at him.

“Relax Longbottom” he laughed.

“Pull yourself together and take some initiative or you’re out of the D.A!” I whispered angrily at him.

“You’d kick me out?” he asked a little shocked.

“That’s right” I snapped getting up and storming out of the library. “If you’re not in it for Harry, Dumbledore or justice, then you’re not in it at all”

I spent the rest of the day out by the lake with Luna, finishing off our Charms homework. It was getting dark and light snow was falling to the grounds. We had taken two goblets from the hall and filled them with water from the lake and were trying to turn it into Rum.

“We should stop tipping it back into the lake or we’ll get the Giant Squid drunk” Luna told me. I smiled at the thought.

“I suppose we could just drink it” I joked.

“Daddy says that –”

“I was joking Luna, and I don’t think drinking Rum would affect a Crumpled horned Snorkack in any shape or form” I said sarcastically.

“That’s not what I was about to say” she said.

“I know – we’ve got a detention to get to” I said packing up my things and making my way to Hagrid's. We sat with Hagrid in his hut and waited for Neville to get here. When he did we left our bags in the hut and headed to the edge of the forest.

“What are we doing in here today?” I asked Hagrid.

“Findin’ some Bowtruckles fer me fifth year class” he told us. “It’s better to find them during daylight so we can see ‘em better – however at night they become more careless then they care ter admit” he said grabbing his crossbow and four small boxes and a large crate.

“What are those for?” Neville asked.

“These smaller boxes are filled with wood lice, it’s a great distraction” he said handing each of us one. “They tend to aim or the eyes – jus’ a heads up” he said turning from us and heading into the forest.

“Lumos” we all said as we followed him in. The forest seemed darker and eerier then usual. Neville mentioned that it could be because of the Dementors that hung around the school now. I silently agreed with him and headed up to walk next to Hagrid who was up a bit further. He was watching Fang who was a little ahead of us.

“How far in do the Bowtruckles live?” I asked him casually.

“Not ter far – they still need plenty of sunlight” I nodded and he looked down at me concerned. “Is everything alright?” he asked me.

“Yeah” I answered smiling up at him.

“Looks like summat’s botherin’ yeh”

“There’s a lot bothering me – the Carrow’s, Harry, my family – have you heard from Harry, Ron or Hermione at all” I finished in a whisper.

“Yeh shouldn’ talk ‘bout that ‘ere” he said taking a few glances around him.

“I whispered”

“Yeh don’ always see yeh’re enemy, Ginny” he told me still glancing around himself.

“Yeah, okay it was just a question” I told him defensively.

“I know that yeh worried, we all are – but yeh need to watch yeh self around ‘ere now” he told me. “If yeh need ter talk ter someone yeh know tha’ I’m ‘ere” he told me quietly. “Jus’ not out ‘ere, anyone could be listenin’ in” he told me. “Come on yeh lot, ‘ere they are” he said putting the box down on the ground. I looked up in the trees and caught sight of the small twig like creatures that I learned about in my fifth year. “Scatter these all o’er the ground, an’ we’ll guide ‘em inter the create” he told us. He started sprinkling the wood lice on the ground from the base of the tree to the create.

“Ow!” Neville jumped backwards into another tree rubbing his face. I watched him carefully when he moved his hand away from his face and uncovered a small twig stuck into his cheek.

“Now, I tol’ yer to be careful, didn’ I?” Hagrid asked turning back to his job. “It helps if yeh get down low an’ make yourself as small as possible” he told us crouching down a little. Neville pulled it out of his face and through it on the ground, casually wiping away some of the blood that trickled down his face. I started to scatter the wood lice on the ground and a few of the Bowtruckles started to suss it out.

“Hagrid?” Neville asked. Hagrid looked at him standing up straight now. “Why did Snape ask you to take us for detention – when he left the Carrow's in charge of all punishments?” I watched Hagrid's reaction which was left expressionless.

“I can’ answer tha’ Neville” he told him.

“Why not?”

“Becaus’ I don’ know why” he told us truthfully.

“Do you have any superstitions?” I asked him. Luna was ignoring the conversation and admiring the sall stick men that lowly made their way into the crate.

“No” he said turning back to the large tree that was occupied with a few more creatures.

“You have to – on Halloween he just turned the Carrow's down, and so did you” I told him. His head snapped towards me.

“What? You hear’ that?” he asked me.

“Of course” I told him. “I found it odd that they came all that way down to see you – I made sure that everything was okay”

“Ginny, I can take care of me self – yeh should start worrying ‘bout yeh selves”

“We are that’s why we’ve started Dumbledore’s Army up again” Neville told him. “We’re keeping the students safe”

“Well – I’m not sure if that’s a good idea” he told us. He pushed a few more of the bow truckles into the crate and locked it up. They started yelling at us for tricking them but Hagrid told them to quieten up and that he’d take them back tomorrow night. We went to turn around when a large centaur jumped out in front of us.

“Hagrid” he said in his deep voice. “I thought we warned you that Wizards trespassing through our restricted area would be punished?”

“Relax Bane” Hagrid said calmly. “We’re just collecting Bowtruckles – we’re not harming anyone” he said.

“Why would we harm anyone?” Luna asked him.

“Wizards have restricted our home in the forest – they are trying to squeeze us out into a new home” he told us.

“That’s so unfair” Luna said. He ignored her pity and turned back to Hagrid.

“Have you passed on our concerns?”

“I have Bane – but the authority goes over Snape’s head” Bane snorted.

“If Wizards restrict our property anymore they’ll have an uprising on their hands” Bane told us.

“Alright, Bane” Hagrid said walking around him. We followed Hagrid around Bane who didn’t take his eyes off us. We made it back to Hagrid's without anymore distractions. He put the crate down by the pumpkin patch and took us up to the castle. “Now yeh three need ter be careful” he said to us. “Good luck” he said waving goodbye. We walked into the castle and bid Luna goodbye headed to the Gryffindor Common room.

I found myself in front of a piece of paper and quill so I decided to write a letter to mum and send it off straight away.

Mum and Dad

How have you been, Hogwarts hasn’t really been Hogwarts at all anymore. The Carrow's and Snape have made life really hard but I’m not backing down at all. They’ve come up with all these bazaar punishments that’s driving me crazy. I really hope that you and dad are okay at home and not to lonely. I’m missing you both heaps and can’t wait to see you on the holidays.

Lot’s of Love
Ginny

Just as I folded the letter into my bag getting ready to send it off I found another piece of parchment and I grabbed it. This was the perfect time to right to Harry again. Neville and everyone was in the common room so I took advantage of my time alone.

Harry,

You know that I love you more than anything in the World and that I would never give up on you. I feel like you are so close to me, only just out of reach. I can’t stand being alone anymore and I want you to hurry up and come back to me. I know that it’s selfish but I don’t think I can live like this anymore. People have stopped asking me about you so I must be putting on a brave face or doing something right. Luna, Neville and I are doing everything we can to spread hope inside the castle walls but we can’t do it like you could. Please come back to me.

Lot’s of Love
Ginny

I tucked this letter into my bag amongst the others and headed off to bed.

***

The next morning I had Defence Against the Dark Arts with the Slytherins so I headed to the classroom as late as I could.

“Nice you could join us Miss Weasley – Five points from Gryffindor”

“I’m not late – what’s she doing here?” I asked at the sight of a small timid first year girl sitting at Carrow’s desk.

“Come to the front Weasley” he told me gesturing me towards him. I frowned and walked up to the front of the class. “Get up Annabelle” he snapped at the small girl. She hopped up quickly and wiped her messy hair out of her face. We stood side by side Carrow faced the class. “My sister and I have come up with another realm of punishment that our dear first year here will first hand experience” he told everyone. I watched everyone’s reaction. The Gryffindors looked a little concerned while the Slytherins looked intrigued as to what was about to happen. Carrow walked up close to me and put his lips to my ear. “Cruciatus ought to be a decent punishment – don’t you think?” I took a step away from him and glared into his eyes.

“You’re crazy” I spat at him.

“Crazy? You’re the crazy one if you defy me” I glared into his eyes until he looked away. “Miss Weasley here will give this first year her punishment”

“I will not!” I snapped at him.

“If I order it –”

“I’m not going to be like you and your death eater sister” I snapped at him.

“DO IT!” he yelled pointing his wand at me. “No one will be leaving until you have”

“What does he want you to do?” The first year asked me worried. Her eyes started to fill with tears.

“You don’t have to worry about anything” I told her. Carrow lunged himself at me and grabbed my wrist and forced my wand hand to point at her.

“Say the spell” He whispered hoarsely at me.

“Never!” I struggled to pull my arm down. We pulled and struggled for a few minutes screaming threats at one another until I punched him with my left hand. He staggered back a little grasping his face. I pointed my wand at him. “If you want me to give a demonstration of crucio I can do it right now” I said through gritted teeth. He pulled his wand out.

“Crucio” I dodged it by the skin of my teeth. I glanced at the first year that was standing behind a fellow Gryffindor that also had his wand raised.

“This isn’t turning into a battle – lower your wands” he said calmly. We both did after I nodded at him. “First Year! Get up the front” he spat at her. She quickly obeyed him and stood beside me grabbing my hand.

“Please don’t let him hurt me” she said with tears streaming down her face.

“You’re going to be fine” I told her.

“Miss Weasley – if you are too afraid to use the spell on a wrong doer, I’m sure theirs many others that wish to have a turn – Accio!” My wand flew into his hands before I was ready and he turned to the class with a smile on his face. “Who would like to show this brat what discipline should be like?” All the Slytherins raised their hands high in the chair, exactly like Hermione used to. The thought of them made me sick. Carrow picked the biggest girl in the class or maybe even school to do the honours. I pushed the small girl behind me, blocking her from view when she got up and walked up the front of the classroom.

“There’s no way I’m letting you do this” I said to her who had her wand raised. She smiled her gapped teeth at me for a second. I looked around for help, there was no Neville or no Luna and no people from the D.A that would stand up for us. I took one last deep breath and closed my eyes tightly when she took one small closer step. Then it hit me. A thousand knives stabbed into my body and sent electric currents through me. I screamed out in pain as loud as I could, I couldn’t see anything, hear or feel anything other than the pain that surrounded me. My head felt like it was going to explode. My lungs felt empty without any oxygen and I was too scared to take another breath in. Just before I thought I couldn’t take anymore of it, the pain eased and everything went dark.

***

I opened my groggy eyes and found myself lying the in the hospital wing with a roaring headache. I sat up quickly and jumped out of bed.

“What are you doing?” Madam Pomfrey asked me.

“Where’s my wand?” I asked searching my pockets and the draws beside the bed.

“You didn’t come in with a wand” she told me concerned.

“Carrow still has it” I told her. “I need my wand back”

“Calm down and get back into bed, I’ll organise someone to look for it for you” she told me.

“What are you talking about?” I asked her irritated. “I know where it is” She looked taken aback. “Carrow stole it off me right before that Geraldine tortured me” I snapped at her.

“I’ll fetch someone to bring it to us – only if you lay down” she warned me. I glared at her for a moment then decided against fleeing and sat in the bed glumly.

“How long have I been here?” she looked delighted at the change of subject and poured me a tonic.

“Only a couple of hours, you can return to your classes in the morning, but for now, you need your rest” She told me. I nodded but silently disagreed with her. The door burst open and Neville, Luna and the rest of the D.A came barging in.

“What is this?” Madam Pomfrey squealed.

“We’re here to see Ginny” Neville told her. She went to protest when he spoke over her. “Just five minutes” he told her. She nodded a little irritated and handed me the tonic.

“Drink this – I’ll be back in five minutes so you can get your rest” she said giving a slight glare at Neville. She left into her office closing her door behind her.

“What happened?” Neville asked me straight away sitting on the end of my bed. Everyone was listening carefully and crowding around me.

“Carrow wanted me to use crucio on a first year so I refused and that Geraldine got to torture me” I snapped. “How’s the first year girl?” I asked him.

“I’m not sure – we haven’t heard anything about her”

“She was a Gryffindor” I told him.

“I can ask some of her classmates what’s happened to her” Lavender told me.

“Thanks” I told her appreciating her greatly. “Oh, Neville – Carrow took my wand before I was tortured and I don’t know where it is. Can you try and find it for me?”

“Sure will” he told me. I nodded in thanks.

“We were all so worried about you – is there anything that we can do to make you feel better?” he asked me. I smiled.

“I’d greatly appreciate you getting me out of here”

“That could be arranged – drink that first” he told me. I took a mouthful of the disgusting potion and placed it on the bedside table. My headache immediately faded and I through my blankets down and climbed back out of the bed. “Let’s go” We ran for the door not looking back. Once outside the door we decided to go to the room of requirement to formulate a plan to get my wand back.
