I had always thought of her as my best friend. We grew up together, went through everything together. I can barely supress the chuckle when I think about the night before we left for Hogwarts. Our families were neighbors and we were sitting on her roof, feet dangling over the edge, the light from her window the only thing visible besides the stars. She looked over at me and grinned.
"I think I'm going to love Hogwarts. Wanna know why?" She asked with that grin on her face. I smiled back.
"Why?" I asked.
"Cos' I beat you at everything and now I'll have witnesses!" She said cheekily. I threw my head back and laughed.
"Them is fightin' words Annaliese." I growled playfully at her. She rolled her eyes at me and I started tickling her.
"James! S-stop!" She cried through her laughter.
"Say the magic word!" I laughed as I danced my fingers along her ribs.
"N-never!" She said stubbornly as a new wave of giggles overtook her. I didn't let up until she finaly conceded.
"A-alright! James Potter is t-the b-best guy in t-the whole w-world!" She shouted. I stopped and grinned at her.
"I know." I said and she punched me in the shoulder.
"I'm nervous." She admitted quietly. I nodded in agreement and didn't say anything after that. Eventually her Mum called to her and I went home.
When we got to Hogwart's things changed slightly. I started hanging around more males as she hung around more females, but we stayed the best of friends. We were both in Gryffindor so it was easy. We had our own groups of friends but eventually our groups merged and everyone was hanging out together. It was nice.
I didn't notice it until our fourth year.
The Tri-Wizard Tournament took place at Hogwarts again and my Dad and my Uncle Ron were judges. It was odd seeing my Dad and Uncle around school all the time but they didn't embarass me...much. But there was the Yule Ball. Me and Annaliese and our group of friends decided to go together as a group, that way everyone was everyone's date. I thought it was a brilliant idea until I saw her. Annaliese was beautiful and a dark golden sleevless dress. Her chocolate brown hair was hanging in thick curls around her shoulders and her eyes had a touch of make-up that brought out their already studding green color. I stared stupidly at her, mouth open as she walked towards me. I could hear my Dad and Uncle Ron snickering behind me and I threw them a dirty look which only made them laugh harder. Annaliese smiled and waved at them, completely oblivious to why they were laughing thank Merlin.
"Hi." She said in her chipper voice.
"H-hi." I stammered. She threw her head back and laughed. She had a rather nice laugh and I noticed that I wanted to hear her laugh again and again.
"You look rather dashing." Annaliese said with a sly smile. My dress robes were brand new and I did look rather handsome if I do say so myself. I grinned.
"And you look rather dashing yourself Annaliese. That dress is amazing." I said. The look in her eyes changed suddenly and I saw a faint blush cross her cheeks.
"Thanks." She murmurred avoiding her eyes from mine.
"Seriously, it's great and you look great. What made you pick it out?" I asked. I had never seen her wear anything gold before, but I found myself wanting her to wear it a lot more often. The blush deepened but then she looked right at me.
"It matched your eyes." She said with a soft smile.
Two and a half years later it happened.
It was the night before our last year at Hogwarts. We sitting on her roof again, telling stories of our old Hogwarts days. Annaliese certainly had grown since then. She was bloody gorgeous. She had curves now, and her voice had taken on a slightly huskier tone since we were eleven. Her laugh still captivated me and I tried to make her laugh as often as possible. I reacted differently to our hugs, no longer wanting to avoid her 'cooties' but wanting to embrace her longer. She felt good in my arms. And for some reason she always smelled like bloody honeysuckles. The smell alone made my knees weak and she smelled as if she bathed in them which didn't help me to keep from trying not to kiss her. I was sure she tasted like honeysuckles.
We got onto the topic of her latest ex. Annaliese was gorgeous and had a plethora of blokes at school who wanted to date her. There had only been a lucky few and they were all jerks. At least I thought they were all jerks.
"They broke up with me because of you!" Annaliese laughed as she pointed a finger at me.
"I think you're overracting." I said calmly.
"It was your bloody overracting that had them heading for the hills!" She said.
"They were total wankers! I saved your arse from certain boyfriend doom!" I said dramatically. Annaliese laughed and poked my side, making me squirm a bit. She knew I was only ticklish on my sides and poked me there constantly.
"What about Drew? He was perfectly nice and a gentleman at that. Yet for some reason unbeknowest to me you transfigured him into skunk!" She practically shrieked.
"Drew? King of all tossers? You thought he was a gentleman? Did you not hear about he went round telling everyone you two shagged in Nevi...er...Professor Longbottom's office? He's lucky he kept his man bits." I replied. It's true. Al and I nearly removed a very vital piece of his body.
"I hadn't heard that. Did he really say those things?" Annaliese asked. I nodded grimly.
"Well they're not true." She said quickly.
"I know." I said and smiled. She smiled back but then suddenly narrowed her eyes at me.
"What's that supposed to mean?" She asked.
"What?" I asked confused.
"That you 'know.' Are you saying I'm unshaggable?" She rounded on me and stood up. Annaliese was fearless, nothing ever scared her. And she always said what was on her mind. And since I wasn't about to be shown up by a girl I stood up as well.
"I never said you were unshaggable! Just that I knew that the tosser never touched you!" I honestly didn't understand why she was so angry.
"You're implying that I am incapable of being shagged! That boys don't want to shag me." She said angrily.
"I said no such thing!" I cried indignantly.
"You might as well had! I'll have you know I'm plenty shaggable!" Annaleise continued.
"I never said you weren't!"
"What, am I not pretty enough James?" She asked.
"No that's not way I mea-"
"My boobs not big enough for you?" She asked. I could feel a blush creep on my face.
"I never said anything about your-"
"You think I'm not skinny enough or something? That I'm fat?"
"Bloody hell woman I never said you were f-" I tried to say but of course she interuptted me again. We had moved right in front of one another by now and our noses were almost touching.
"I'm completely shag worthy James Sirius Potter! How dare you insinuate I'm n-" But this time I interrupted her.
"I BLOODY KNOW YOU ARE!" I bellowed. She opened her mouth to say something but I was too worked up.
"Why do you think I had Freddie and Al help me to scare all those blokes away huh? I couldn't stand the sight of you with them! It tore me up inside to see you kissing them when it should've been me kissing you!" I said angrily and raked a hand through my impossibly messy hair. We were both breathing heavy and the smell of honeysuckles overtook my senses.
"Well I have one more question for you." Annaliese whispered. I looked at her and waited.
"Are you gonna kiss me or not?" She asked. I smiled widely as I grabbed her face and brought her lips to mine.
Two years later I had the ring.
I knew I was going to ask her. It'd been a year after we graduated and she was in Healer school while I was doing the Auror program. It was our two year anniversary and I knew she wouldn't be expecting it. I planned a romantic dinner and afterwards we went to a Muggle park next to a lake and walked a bit. We made our way towards the waters edge and I turned and looked at her. She smiled and I pulled out the ring box and got down on one knee. Her eyes grew wide and I smiled.
"Annaliese Parker, I love you more than anything in this world and I want to ask you the most important question of my life. Will you marry me?" I asked. Annaliese didn't say anything for a second as tears poured down her face, she choked out a laugh as she pulled me to my feet.
"I have a question of my own." She said with a watery smile.
"Oh yeah? What's that?" I asked. She smiled even bigger.
"Are you gonna kiss me or not?" She asked. I laughed as I picked her up around her waist and spun her around kissing every inch of her face as she laughed and said 'Yes' over and over again.
Six months later I was standing at an altar watching her walk down the aisle.
Al was my best man and Freddie was my other groomsman. I felt their eyes on me and I turned to give them a smile. Al and Freddie grinned in return as Rose and Dom tried to muffle their tears. Annaliese was wearing a beautiful golden dress and her fourteen year old self popped into my head. Another golden dress that took my breath away. I smiled widely at her when her father gave me her hand. The preacher went through the vows and we repeated them as we slipped rings onto one anothers fingers. When we finally said 'I do' we turned towards each other. I lifted her viel and saw her pretty smile, her eyes shimmering with love. I was about to kiss her when I had an idea. She looked at me with a slightly confused expression.
"I have a question for you." I told her.
"And what would that be?" She asked me.
"Are you gonna kiss me or not?" I smirked. Annaliese threw her head back and laughed and then pulled me towards her and kissed me hard.
I have never been more thankful for any other question in my life besides that simple one back when we were sixteen. 'Are you gonna kiss me or not?'
