Chapter Three

I spend the next five nights in Teddy’s bed, not willing to go back to my dorm for more than my books and quills. He must have figured out about Yvette and Michael because he stops asking what happened and instead just accepts my presence. I don’t know when he expects me gone, but I plan on sticking around until winter break, at least.

All of my time is spent in the Heads’ Rooms and I only leave for classes and the occasional meal. Thankfully I haven’t run into anyone yet and only catch the briefest of glares from Yvette. The strange thing is that Dom hasn’t tried to talk to me yet. Usually she tries to follow me around, hoping my popularity will rub off on her.

Two days before winter break, I’m working on my potions essay when Teddy clears his throat. When I look up, I realize he’s watching me and his homework isn’t anywhere near complete. “I don’t know how to go about saying this,” he pauses, as though hoping I’ll be able to tell him.

I know what it is. He’s tired of sleeping out in the common room and wants me to go back to the Gryffindor dorms. “It’s ok. I get it. I’ll be gone in five minutes.” It kind of hurts that he couldn’t let me stay until we leave for winter break, but I’ve been crashing in his bed for too long now. It’s only natural that he want his bed back.

“No, it’s not that! I want you to stay!” He blushes fiercely and looks down at his hands. “I mean, you can sleep here as long as you need to. That’s not what I need to talk to you about. I think Yvette has been spreading some rumors about you.”

Oh. That’s really a relief because I knew Yvette was going to tell the whole school. Fact is, they probably aren’t rumors, just her version of the truth. “She’s told everyone about Michael cheating on me, then?” It hurts, but I’ve spent almost a week coming to terms with it.

If possible, Teddy looks even more awkward when I say this. “Erm, no. Well, people know about that, but Yvette’s changed it quite a bit.”

That doesn’t sound good and if Teddy doesn’t want me to know it’s got to be something horrible. “What is it? What’s she saying about me?”

He clears his throat awkwardly again. “Erm, well her version is that you were the one cheating on Michael and they only got together after.”

“What?” That must be why everyone’s been giving me a cold shoulder in class. Yvette must be trying to act like she’s the one who’s been hurt and she’s got everyone on her side. But shouldn’t Michael be on my side? We were together for four months and he cares about me, even though he did cheat. He’s got to.

“I’m really sorry. I could try to give her detention for it, but Professor McGonagall might cite me for abuse of power.”

“Don’t do that!” I say hurriedly. Teddy shouldn’t get into trouble on my account. It’ll be easier just to ignore the rumors and pretend they don’t exist. Besides, winter break is almost here and after that everyone will just forget. Gossip doesn’t last over winter or summer break. “It’s fine. There’s been gossip about me forever, some pretty bad stuff too.”

From the look on Teddy’s face, I can tell he’s heard some of those rumors, but I hardly expected any different. Teddy’s a bookworm, but even he isn’t oblivious enough to miss all of it. “Well you’re welcome to stay here as long as you like.”

A light cough comes from the other side of the room and we look up to see the Head Girl standing there. Like I said before, we don’t really run in the same circles. I didn’t even know of her until she became Head Girl. I must have seen her around in the corridors, but nothing specific sticks with me. “Ted, I don’t think it’s really appropriate for her to be staying here. She’s got a bed of her own in the Gryffindor dormitories.”

“I don’t say anything when your friends spend the night,” Teddy replies calmly, but this only makes Kelly more annoyed.

“Because my friends don’t live here! They sometimes spend the night, but not multiple nights in a row and definitely not for a whole week!” I guess Kelly got tired of Teddy sleeping in the common room, but that doesn’t really affect her. I’m sure it would be ok for me to stay just another two nights. “I could go to McGonagall with this. I’m sure she’d be pretty shocked to hear where precious Victoire Weasley’s been spending her nights.”

“Lay off it, Kelly.” His voice doesn’t leave any room for argument so she leaves it at that. “Oh bugger, I’m nearly late for Ancient Runes.”

I still can’t believe the number of classes Teddy’s taking this year. He reminds me a bit of Aunt Hermione. Apparently she used a time turner to get around to all of her classes one year. Me on the other hand, I’ve got potions, charms, and transfiguration. They were the only three OWLs I got last year, exceeds Expectations on every one. Dad couldn’t have been more disappointed. He was Head Boy at Hogwarts and always wanted me to be Head Girl. “You good here, Vic?”

His eyes flick over Kelly nervously and I can tell he’s worried about me. It’s nice in a way, but Kelly’s not that bad. She’s Head Girl and probably just worried about me and Teddy breaking the rules. It’s no big deal. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

The second the portrait closes behind him, Kelly sits in the seat across from me. “Why are you here? You’re distracting Ted from his studies. He’s taking his NEWTs this year and this may surprise you, but some people actually care about their scores.”

“I’m not distracting him, we were just studying together.”

Kelly only rolls her eyes. “People like you don’t study unless you’re trying to get something.”

“People like me?” I’m sick and tired of everyone saying that. They’ve put me in a neat little box with the rest of the beautiful stupid people. The sad thing is, they’re right. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“Please, like you don’t know.” She stands up to leave, but pauses to shoot me another glare. “Stay away from Ted. He deserves better than a slut like you.”

That’s when it hits me. She hates me because she thinks I’m trying to get Teddy. Yeah, right. Teddy and me? That’s ridiculous. He’s practically my cousin. “Teddy doesn’t see me that way. We’re just friends.”

“Victoire, you’ve got veela blood that ensures all men see you that way. Ted’s no different.” There’s no way Teddy would ever see me that way. Yes, we’re close and yes, I love him, but he’s family. “You just have this power over men. No bloke could ever turn you down, not Michael Collier, not Professor Harrelson. Just leave Teddy alone.”

“Harrelson? What has he got to do with anything?”

Kelly just rolls her eyes at me and sighs dramatically. “Just leave Ted alone. You shouldn’t drag him down with you.”

“Fine. We’ll just stay friends.” Mum always told me it was easier to just agree with people. Then she would mutter something about Aunt Hermione that always made Grandma mad.

“Good.” Kelly looks down at the Transfiguration book Teddy left out and begins reading the passage he just finished. After a minute, she glances back up at me. “You know, I don’t mind if you go back to reading Witch Weekly or whatever it was you were doing. I won’t judge you.”

But just the insistence that I was reading Witch Weekly is judging me. Just because I don’t do homework all the time doesn’t mean I never do it. I am still taking three classes and I’m doing quite well in potions. But I don’t say any of this to Kelly, I just summon a witch weekly magazine from Teddy’s room and read it while the Head Girl does her own homework.

A/N: New chappie! :D I'll try to post again soon, but I've been sick and busy. Next week should be better for writing. Let me know how you're liking the story so far!
