Sometimes all a girl needs is a hand to hold and a heart that will understand.-Unknown
I groaned and rolled over burying my head in a strangely scented pillow that smelled faintly of the ocean and parchment. A soft giggle broke through the fog in my mind and I reluctantly peeled my eyes open to find Lex sitting on the bed next to me and smiling brightly at me. It was then I remember everything that had happened and I bolted out of bed, Malfoy’s bed.
I can’t believe I slept in Malfoy’s bed. What was I thinking? I must have gone insane. That was the only reasonable explanation.
Lex put a finger to her lips and pointed to the floor where both Malfoy and Al were sleeping peacefully. She grabbed my hand and together we silently made our way through the maze of things scattered across the floor. We opened and shut the door as quietly as we could.
The Slytherin common room was deserted. It was be really early if nobody is up yet.
“What time is it?” I asked Lex as I rubbed my eyes and yawned loudly.
“Just before six.” She replied cheerfully.
I smiled. I was so happy to see Lex happy again but I knew that a part of her happiness was a lie. A lie that she was not only telling me but she was telling herself. Lex doesn’t handle her emotions or bad situations very well. She does not like to face her problems so she bottles everything up inside of her until she explodes, like she had last night. The smallest, most insignificant thing could set her off when everything she kept bottled up became too much for her to handle.
“You’re insane, Lex. I should still be sleeping. It’s way too early for any normal person to be awake.”
“Good thing you’re not normal,” she grinned at me, “what would people have thought if they saw us coming from the boy’s dorm?” Lex asked.
I opened my mouth and then closed it again. I hadn’t thought about that. I already got talked about enough. I didn’t want to give people a reason to start rumors about me or Lex.
She smiled at me. “You’re welcome.”
We woke the fat lady, which she was not happy about, and quietly made our way through the common room and up the stairs to our dorm. We crept into the dimly lit room; the sky was just starting to lighten and the little light shone weakly through the window. We tried to be as quiet as we could so we wouldn’t wake anyone up and nobody would know that we had been out all night so they wouldn’t ask any questions.
“You were out late.” Lex and I both jumped.
Roxy raised an eyebrow at us. She eyed us calmly from her spot on her perfectly made bed where she sat fully clothed and painting her nails a deep dark blue with a slight sparkle to match her deep dark blue dress.
“You’re up early,” I replied.
Roxy shrugged. “I’m always up early.”
I knew that Roxy woke up early because by the time I woke up every day she was always already gone but I had no idea that she woke up this early.
“Where were you all night?” she asked.
Lex and I glanced at each other and then I shrugged. Roxy wouldn’t tell anyone. She’s not really into gossiping and starting rumors about her own family.
“We fell asleep in the boys Slytherin dorm.”
Roxy blew on her nails to dry them and surveyed us with her dark brown eyes and then nodded her head slightly.
“What are you going to wear today?” she asked us.
I stared at her in confusion for a minute before I remembered today was the first Hogsmeade trip and that I had a date with Shawn and Lex and a date with Scorpius. Lex and I glanced at each other once again. Roxy sighed and rolled her eyes at us. She carefully put her bottle of nail polish in a box full of every color nail polish possible lying beside her bed. She then grabbed our hands and dragged us over to our closets where she studied our clothes thoughtfully. She tugged on one of her curls and shook her head sadly.
“I need to take you shopping.” She shook her head again. She dragged us over to her closet after finally deciding that our clothes just wouldn’t do.
She eyed Lex and then pulled a simple light pink dress with white polka dots out of her closet. She held it up against Lex and nodded.
“Put this on.” She commanded Lex who obediently took the dress from Roxy. “You can keep that. I never wear it.”
“Thanks.” Lex answered as she pulled the dress on.
Roxy then turned to me. She pulled out a yellow dress very similar to the one she gave Lex except instead of polka dots it had purple flowers embroidered on the bottom. She handed it to me and without hesitating I started to pull off my robes from the day before.
Roxy studied Lex who was already dressed. She tugged self-consciously on the dress. The dress made her look like an innocent little girl. Roxy steered her to the chair in front of the large mirror in our room and ran her fingers through Lex’s blonde curls. She brushed out Lex’s hair with her purple hairbrush and then tapped the top of her head with the tip of her wand. Lex’s frizzy curls instantly curled themselves into perfect loose curls that hung down her back. Roxy turned her around and began putting makeup on Lex. Lex started to protest; she never wore any makeup, but was silenced by Roxy’s threatening stare. Roxy applied some light eyeliner and a little mascara to Lex’s eyes and some lip gloss to her lips. She tilted her head to study her work and smiled slightly in satisfaction.
Roxy shooed Lex out of the chair and gestured for me to sit down. I did as I was told and watched Roxy in the mirror as she studied my hair trying to figure out what to do with it. She brushed my hair out making my wild curls even frizzier than usual. She tapped my head with her wand and my hair instantly curled to perfection. They were smooth, shiny, and a lot less wild than usual. My hair actually looked good. Roxy has a knack for hair spells. Maybe I should ask her to teach me how to do them. Maybe then I wouldn’t look like I had a small animal on the top of my head every day.
After smearing some makeup across my face, Roxy stepped back to examine her work. She nodded her approval and then beckoned us over to her bed. She sat down and gestured for us to do the same. Lex and I watched as she placed her box of nail polish on her bed and began rummaging through it for the perfect color for us.
Carefully Roxy painted Lex’s nails first with steady, practiced strokes in a light pink color that perfectly matched Lex’s dress. She then added some perfectly round dots to Lex’s nails.
“Shawn’s a nice guy.” Roxy suddenly stated. Her eyes never left her nail polish. She pulled out a yellow color for my nails having finished Lex’s. “He’s a great kisser,”
“You dated him too?” I exclaimed. Who in this school hasn’t Roxy dated?
Roxy nodded and wiped a fleck of yellow paint off of my skin.
“For a week last year.”
She finished my nails and used her wand to dry them before placing a small purple jewel in the corner of each nail.
“Stand up,” she commanded both of us. We did as we were told and squirmed while Roxy inspected us for any imperfections. Finally she nodded in satisfaction and smiled.
“Now you’re ready for your dates.” She declared.
I sighed in relief. Roxy was finally done using me as her own little Barbie doll. I flopped backwards onto my bed and felt Lex quietly sit down beside me. I had just closed my eyes when I felt something really hard collide with my stomach. I screamed and bolted up clutched my bruised stomach. Roxy glared at me and I saw that the object that had collided with my stomach was one of her dark blue high heel shoes. Shoes are supposed to be worn not thrown! What is wrong with this girl?
“What was that for?” I gasped as I clutched my stomach in agony.
“You’re going to mess up your hair if you lay down.” Roxy stated. She smoothed down one of her curls to calm herself down and ignored my deathly glare.
Die evil Roxy, die. She’s not dying. Why isn’t she dying?
“Can you hand me my shoe?” she asked calmly.
I clenched my jaw. She wanted me to hand her the shoe she just threw at me like nothing had ever happened. Oh no, that is not going to happen. I slowly picked up the shoe and then suddenly chucked it at her head. She snatched the shoe out of the air just before it hit her face. Damn quidditch reflexes. She doesn’t even like quidditch, she says the wind messes up her hair, but that doesn’t stop her from being an amazing quidditch player. James, who is the quidditch captain, keeps begging her to join the team, he never begs, and she refuses.
She smirked at me. “Thanks,”
My hands clenched into fists. Lex grabbed my hands and smoothed them out with her small gently fingers.
“Let’s go to breakfast,” Lex suggested after she had succeeded in not letting me lose my temper.
Roxy and I agreed. Roxy slid on her high heels and handed Lex and I some sandals since she knew that we would probably kill ourselves if we tried to walk in high heels.
I glanced at the clock beside my bed and saw that it was after seven. The other three girls in our dorm were just starting to stir as we walked out the door and down to the great hall for breakfast.
I slide my arm first through Lex’s and then through Roxy’s.
“Will you stop fixing your hair?” I asked Roxy impatiently. Her constant hair fixing was starting to annoy me. “There is nothing to fix. It’s already perfect.”
Roxy flipped her hair calmly behind her shoulder. “There’s always something to fix. Nothing is ever perfect.”
I rolled my eyes and ignored her. I don’t understand her need for perfection. It takes a lot of effort to look and act perfect all the time. I gave up on trying to be perfect a long time ago.
We took our usual seats at the Gryffindor table and immediately Lily and Liz claimed the seats across from us. The jabbered on and on about the latest gossip that nobody except them cared about. I loaded my plate up with chocolate chip pancakes and smothered them with syrup before cramming a huge bite into my mouth.
Lily crinkled her nose at my eating habits. “That’s disgusting.” She stated.
I smirked at her. “If you don’t like it go sit somewhere else.”
She crinkled her nose again at me but didn’t move. She spun around to face Liz and engaged her in a conversation about shoes. Every once and a while Roxy interjected with her opinion. That’s when Malfoy and Al decided to join us. Al sat next to Roxy and since there wasn’t a spot next to Lex, Malfoy sat next to me. Al steered the conversation away from shoes and instead to the upcoming Slytherin versus Ravenclaw quidditch match.
“Is Lex going to be okay?” I jumped at the sound of Malfoy’s voice suddenly whispering into my ear.
I turned to face him and surprisingly he looked genuinely concerned about Lex. Maybe his heart isn’t made completely of ice after all. Oh who am I kidding? This is Malfoy; he doesn’t care about anyone but himself.
I made sure everyone was engaged in the quidditch conversation before answering back so quietly that only he could hear.
“I don’t know. I don’t know if she ever is truly okay or if she’s just really good at hiding what’s hurting her.” it felt weird having a conversation with Malfoy without screaming at him.
He glanced at Lex over my shoulder. She was twirling one of her curls around her finger absentmindedly and laughed at something Liz said.
“What happened yesterday?” he asked.
I sighed. “I’m not sure. It was probably nothing. She doesn’t like to face her problems.” I answered slowly. “So she keeps everything inside until she can’t handle it anymore. Something small and insignificant probably reminded her of what she was running from and she just couldn’t deal with it.”
He was silent for a minute while he processed what I had said. I waited patiently for him to say something.
“You really care about her. You’re like her mother, always there to look out for her and protect her.”
I nodded. “She deserves a better friend than me.” I admitted softly.
“You’re a great friend, Rose, the best she could ever have.” He assured me.
I looked straight into his gray eyes and the ice seemed to melt from them right before my eyes. I saw a strange emotion swimming in them, one I had never seen someone look at me with before.
“Rose,” I jumped and spun around to look at Lily who was practically bouncing out of her seat. How can she have so much energy so early in the morning? “There’s a rumor that you’re going to Hogsmeade with Shawn Fuller. Is it true?” She said so fasts it took me a few seconds to interpret her words.
I nodded. “Yes.”
Lily and Liz squealed and I clamped my hands over my ears. I think they just broke my eardrums. The babbled to each other in a frequency that was definitely not meant for human ears. Next to me, I felt Malfoy stiffen and glanced over at him to see his infuriating mask of ice once again settled on his face.
I tried to block out Liz and Lily’s incessant squealing and finished off the last of my pancakes before standing up and running straight into Shawn. He caught me by my waist just before I fell. Liz and Lily stopped mid squeal to stare at Shawn and I.
“We need to stop meeting like this.” He said with a smile. I smiled back up at him and then realizing that he was still holding me up, took a step back out of his arms.
“At least you’re not covered in pumpkin juice this time,” Lily stated with a hysterical giggle.
I glared at her. “And who was the one who poured the pumpkin juice all over me?” I asked.
“Only because you deserved it!” she exclaimed with a grin and more hysterical giggles.
I snatched a piece of toast off of Lex’s plate and threw it at Lily. She squealed and tried to duck but she wasn’t quick enough. The butter covered toast collided with her right cheek and then fell into her lap covering her with butter. Her jaw hung open in shock an before she could snap out of it I grabbed Shawn’s hand and sprinted out of the great hall as fast as I could.
I leaned against the wall outside of the great hall panting for breath while Shawn watched me with amusement. He wasn’t even out of breath! It must be all of his quidditch training.
“Is it always like that with your family?” he asked. He probably thought we were insane.
I nodded. “You should see my family when we all get together. It’s a madhouse.”
He laughed and offered me his hand.
“Shall we go then?” he asked.
I smiled and took his outstretched hand.
