“Is he asleep? What are you doing?” I ask her. I had woken up and she hadn’t been in bed.
“He was hungry,” She whispers, leading the way back to bed. “Took you long enough to wake up.” I slide under the covers.
“Sorry,” I hold her close as she falls to sleep. Parents. We’re parents. I’m a dad. I smile.
“Well, I have to check you’re diaper. We can’t have you all wet, now can we.” I hear Dora tell him as I go down the stairs. I make us some breakfast. About the time it’s finished, Dora walks in. How she can be so graceful while holding Teddy, and not the rest of the time, is beyond me. Teddy’s talking to us. Sometimes I wish I could speak baby. I bet Dumbledore could. I smile at her. After lunch, she puts Teddy down for a nap and curls up next to me on the couch.
“You know, it’s been forever since we had sex.”
“What?”Where had that come from?
“It has. Since my belly got really big.” She smiles up at me. “I think we have a couple hours, at least.” I smile down at her.
“Really, Dora. Is that the only thing you think of?” She gets up on her knees and kisses me. I grab her legs and lay her back onto the cushions…
“I miss this too,” she says.
“What?” I ask, trying to find my shirt.
“Just being able to do whatever, whenever, no worries.” I smile at her.
“What do you want for dinner?”
“Just surprise me,” she says, her usual response. I go into the kitchen to start cooking and Teddy starts crying.
“I’m coming,” She calls up the stairs, like he’s going to understand. I chuckle.
Teddy’s in his hi-chair, while we eat. He’s babbling in the cute baby talk of his. I copy him. He laughs and turns his hair a sandy-brown, just like mine.
“What do you think his real hair colour is?” I ask.
“I don’t know.” Suddenly, McGonagall’s cat is in our kitchen.
“Voldemort is at Hogwarts. There’s going to be a battle. If you can, please come quickly.” I look up at Dora. Her hair’s gone white. Quickly she grabs Teddy.
“What are you doing?” I ask. She can’t think she’s going to fight.
“Taking him to Mum. She’ll watch him.”
“Dora, no. I want you to watch him.”
“You should go there.”
“Remus, don’t leave me.” I’m not-I’m not leaving. I’ll be back. I want to say it, but I don’t. Instead, I take her hand and apparate the three of us to her mums. I take Teddy.
“I love you son. I love you more than you could ever imagine. I’ll be back soon, I promise. And I never break a promise.” I hold him tight to me, savouring every second.“I’m sorry, Dora,” I say, giving Teddy back to her.
“Don’t go,” She whispers.
“What? What’s going on? Are you leaving again?” Andromeda asks I shake my head, and Dora nods hers, our eyes never leaving each other.
“Which is it?”
“Let me go. I can help. I’m an Auror, damn it.”
“And you’re a mum. Please, Dora, just stay.” Andromeda takes Teddy from Dora. Tears are flowing from her eyes. “Please. Let me protect you.”
“I don’t want you to go.” I walk over to her, and hold her tight, never wanting to let go. But I do.
“I love you. Don’t you ever forget that.” I say, leaning in to kiss her. Again I don’t want to pull away, but I find the strength to. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” I back away, my eyes closed. I don’t want to go. I want to stay here, with my wife, my son. I take one last look before I leave.
I’m leading a group onto the grounds, but there are too many. We never make it out. We’re forced to split up. I take out a couple of Death Eaters. Everything is moving to fast. People are running, bright lights are flying everywhere. Then I’m fighting Dolohov. He’s good. I send everything I have at him, hoping to take him out of commission. I’m about to fire a Killing Curse when he falls. I hadn’t done anything. I look up and see Dora running to me.
“I’m sorry, I couldn’t just wait and-”
I brush her cheek, letting her know I forgive her, and to make sure she’s real. “It’s okay.”
“I couldn’t stand-”
“I understand, love.”
“I love you,” we say at the same time. I smile at her.
We turn. Bellatrix has revived Dolohov. And we begin fighting again. It’s hard fighting him and keeping an eye on Dora. I glance over and see a look of horror on her face before a bright green light blinds me.
