Authors Note: After listening to this song over and over I came up with this story. It’s a bit different than what I have written before as there will be a flashback part that will not feature any of the song.
I dream of you
Waiting for you
To see I’m still here
“Hi Lily” I called to her as she walked past me in the corridor; I sighed when the only response I had received was a slight nod of acknowledgement.
“When did you start calling her Lily?” Sirius asked me curiously as we walked together with Remus and Peter behind us.
“After that summer’s night” I replied.
“What summer’s night is there something your hiding James?” Remus asked with a hint of amusement in his voice.
“It’s nothing. Come on were going to be late.” I replied and hurried into my class.
Three months later and she still hadn’t acknowledged my existence, even though we were both heads and sharing the same quarters. She blanked me and only muttered when I tried to talk to her. She never looked at me. It seemed to me that, that night didn’t mean as much to her as it did me.
Coz I just want to love you better
Better than anyone
“Lily” I began finally deciding to sort out this mess.
“Mmm?” She replied not looking up from her book that she was engrossed in.
‘Coz when you shine your light upon me
It’s brighter than the morning sun
“Lily will you look at me” I snapped. She quickly glanced at me in shock before going back to the damn book. I snatched the book out of her hand and slammed it on the table. She still refused to look at me. “Lily” I snapped and she finally looked at me. My breath caught in my throat as her brilliant green orbs looked into my meek hazel ones. Her eyes danced with the flames of the dying fire and her shiny dark red hair fell perfectly on her face. “What’s going on here? Why have you been ignoring me? I asked. She looked away again.
“I don’t know what to say to you” she replied meekly.
“Hi would be a good start.” Silence fell upon us for a few minutes and I got irritated. “Lily I can’t take this.” I said angrily, jumping up in frustration.
“I don’t know what you want from me.” She snapped matching my anger.
“What happened between us was a big deal. You can’t just ignore it and me.” She stood silent for a minute her eyes seemed glazed as if she was remembering that night.
“Sirius you’re too funny.” I laughed. We had been sitting in my living room for the past hour mimicking the teachers and Sirius had just managed to pull of the perfect McGonagall imitation.
It was a warm, sticky summer’s night and whilst my parents slept soundly Sirius and I sat under an air conditioning charm telling jokes. Sirius had moved in with us at the beginning of our sixth year after a particularly nasty fight with his mum.
“Did you hear that?” Sirius asked suddenly we fell silent and listened to the sound of light footsteps coming up the gravel pathway. We both grabbed our wands and my parents dashed down the stairs as our intruder alarm went off. My dad was the one too open the door. He poked his head out slightly but found no one there. “Who’s there?” He asked in his gruff voice.
“Sorry sir, I didn’t mean to alarm you.” A soft timid voice answered. Wait a minute I thought. I know that voice. I stepped out onto the porch to find Lily Evans standing there. She was wearing a pale pink house coat and white fluffy slippers, her eyes were red and puffy and she had a purple bruise on her cheek.
“What are you doing here?” She asked surprised.
“I could ask you the same thing. I live here Lily.” I replied.
“Bring her inside.” My mum said and I stepped aside to do so. Once inside she looked even worse, her hair was a knotted mess, she had a small gash on her forehead and she was holding onto her side as if in pain.
“I just had to get out of my house, I apparated and ended up here. I didn’t know this is where you lived.” She explained as she gingerly sat down on the sofa.
“What happened?” Sirius asked taking in her beaten appearance. But she fell silent and refused to look at us.
“Sirius why don’t you go and get Lily a bandage, Essence of Dittany, pain relief potion and some strong tea and then we’ll leave her in James’ capable hands.” My mum said.
“Thank you so much Mrs Potter, sorry to intrude.”
“Nonsense dear, you are welcome to stay as long as you need to.” Mum replied and ushered everyone out. We sat in silence for a few minutes until Sirius brought the necessary potions.
“Thanks Sirius.” I said and he nodded in return before closing the door. I shifted from the sofa opposite Lily to the coffee table to tend to her wounds.
“This may hurt” I said as I applied the Essence of Dittany to the bandage and then to her cut head.
“Ouch.” She said wincing in pain.
“Sorry.” I replied trying to keep the emotion out of my voice. Next I gave her some pain relief potion and handed her, her tea to sip on whilst I dabbed a cloth soaked in Dittany on her face.
“You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.” I said after a few minutes of silence.
“Sorry for causing you so much trouble.” She whispered.
“You’re not causing me any trouble.” I replied and she smiled slightly before wincing in pain.
“Is there anywhere else you’re hurt?” I asked when the bruise had become almost invisible. She nodded and stood up, she took off her housecoat to reveal a pair of dark pink pyjamas with open lilies on them; she then turned gently so I could see her side and she lifted her pyjama top to reveal a six inch bruise along her ribs.
“Are they broken?” I asked no longer able to hide the fact that I was crying. She nodded and I stood up to get her some broken bone mending potion. After she drank it I applied more dittany to a cloth and gently as I could dabbed her side. “I’m sorry.” I sniffed as she winced. “Who did this to you?” I asked and this time, hearing the anguish in my voice, she lifted my head up to meet her gaze.
“My father is nasty when he’s drunk.” She began and I looked at her in surprise. “He got drunk after work and started hitting us when he came home. He hit me and I fell into the coffee table in our living room, breaking my ribs and cutting my head as I did so. Mum phoned the police and told me to go somewhere safe and she would go to Petunia’s. I told her that I was going to Emme’s but when I apparated I ended up here. I don’t know why.” She explained and looked at me with sadness in her eyes.
“I can’t believe he would do that to you.” I whispered. She smiled sadly and wiped the tears off my face. After her bruise had almost vanished I showed her to her guest room. “There are toiletries in the en suite and I’m right next door if you need me.” I said
“Thank you James.” She replied and hugged me. I stood shocked for a second before hugging her back. I wrapped my arms tightly around her and kissed the top of her head. She smiled at me when we broke apart before shutting the door. I sighed and went into my own room, I undressed and climbed into my own bed but after thirty minutes I still wasn’t asleep. Suddenly my bedroom door creaked open then shut, I grabbed my wand and glasses and said lumos.
“Lily.” I said shocked. “Are you ok?”
“Can I stay here tonight?” She asked shyly. I nodded my head and she climbed onto my bed. I got a spare mat, pillow and blanket and laid them on the floor. “Stay with me.” She pleaded. I looked at her shocked and could see the desperation in her eyes. I nodded and climbed in beside her. I lay on my back and she lay on my chest. “Put your arms around me.” She said sleepily. I did so and relaxed as she relaxed. We both fell asleep within minutes.
Now I just want to hold you tighter
Tighter than anyone
'Coz when you put your arms around me
It's warmer than the morning sun
“You make me feel so safe.” She said coming out of her trance, but then she ran off before I had the chance to reply.
I just want to love you better
And show you
I sighed and sat on the sofa, I had just been given conformation that it did mean a lot to her, but that she was also afraid. I decided then and there to show her that she had nothing to be scared of and I knew just how to do that. After searching the castle for five minutes I found her just outside the library.
What you deserve
Dinner with a candle and music and fireworks
“Lily.” I called she stopped and turned around. “Let me show you that you don’t have to be afraid.”
“James please” she begged.
“Let me show you that not all men are like him, and that you can trust me.”
“James just stop.”
“If you still can’t trust me then I promise that I’ll leave you alone.”
“What do I have to do?” She asked.
“Just meet me in our common room at midnight.” I replied and she nodded before walking into the library. I punched the air happily before dashing off to prepare for our date.
If you give me this chance
We could have the perfect night
At midnight I nervously paced the common room floor awaiting her arrival. I had been ready for hours; she of course took hours to get ready. I had chosen a simple slate grey shirt with white pinstripes and a pair of black dress trousers. I had tried and failed miserably to flatten my unruly hair, so I just left it the way it was in the end.
“Sorry I’ll be one minute.” She called poking her head out from her room. I smiled in return and waited. Five minutes later she came down the stairs what I saw took my breath away. She wore a white smock dress, with a pair of white strappy sandals. Her hair was tied in a messy bun with a strand falling over her beautiful green eyes. I scanned her face and noticed that she had put on a small bit of pink blusher and a pale pink lip gloss. “You scrub up well.” She teased knowing that I had been staring at her.
“You look beautiful.” I breathed and she blushed in reply.
“So here I am, where are we going?” She asked.
“Follow me.” I replied I stuck out my arm in a gentleman way and she giggled but took it none the less.
And shooting stars
Moving to the rhythm and dancing to soft guitars
Five minutes later and we had arrived at the room of requirement. She looked at me confused as I walked back and forth three times. I smiled as I led her to the door that had magically appeared. “This is the part where you trust me.” I whispered in her ear and covered her eyes. She immediately tensed and her breathing became rapid. “Trust me.” I whispered once more. She nodded and I felt her relax. I opened the door magically and carefully led her in. “Open your eyes” I said and she did. She gasped and looked around in awe.
The room had been set to my exact specifications it was a clear summer’s night, the stars and moon were shining brightly in the dark blue sky. There was a light breeze that made the perfect green blades of grass sway. There was a small grassy hill that had appeared and on the top was a table, with a red and white checker cloth, two plates and a trolley stood beside it. Surrounding the table was floating candles.
“Shooting stars” she gasped as they danced in the night’s sky.
“Take off your sandals.” I said and she did, we walked barefooted up the soft grassy hill. She smiled when the floating guitars appeared and played soft music. We sat in a contented silence as we ate our three course meal. After the meal had finished I stood up and asked for her hand, she willingly gave me it and we swayed to the music. After the song had finished I turned her to face the sky and watched her excitement as it was lit with bright, colourful fireworks.
“It’s perfect James.” She sighed wistfully as we swayed to the music again.
“So do you trust me?” I asked hopefully. She smiled and lent into me knowing what she wanted I bent down and captured her lips with my own. The kiss was so soft and delicate that it felt like I dreamt it.
“I trust you James.” She whispered when she pulled away. I smiled and rested my forehead against hers barely able to believe what I heard.
“I’m glad to hear that.” I replied and we kissed again. The rest of the night was spent swaying to the music and living in our own perfect world.
If you give me this chance
We could have the perfect night
A.N. So another version of how Lily and James got together, this is the third one I’ve done. Let me know what you think of it please by reviewing.
Sub note; I decided not to put in the morning after in the memory part because I felt it would drag it on too much. So I shall leave it to your wonderful imaginations to decide what happened the morning after.
