With a little help from her mum, actually her mum did it all, the flame on the single candle decorating the fruit flan, was blown out.
“Happy first birthday sweetie,” Hermione said placing a kiss on Aphrodite’s head as she moved the dessert out of the reach of the little hands that were determined to sink wrist deep into the cake.
“I got plates,” Draco called out making his way through the crowd surrounding the table in the kitchen of their flat.
“Mrs. Weasley, could you pass me the knife sitting on the counter behind you please,” Hermione asked the older woman.
Hermione began cutting the cake, while Tonks distributed the pieces out to the guests.
“Teddy no!” Tonks said grabbing his hand too late as a plate with cake fell from the table.
Hermione laughed as she grabbed two plastic bowls from the counter for the babies. As soon as the bowls were set down in front of the two, both sets of hands found their way into the cake.
“Why even bother with toys, they seem perfectly happy to play with cake,” Hermione said as she broke the fruit into smaller pieces.
She heard the door bell ring and looked up to see Draco slip from the kitchen
“Sorry I’m late.” She heard over the talking of the guests before Blaise walked into the kitchen.
“You’re just in time for cake,” she said feeding a piece of strawberry to Aphrodite. “Though as her Godfather, I would appreciate if next year you be on time.”
“Now come on Hermione, Ginny’s is the responsible Godparent, you can’t expect the same from me,” he replied smiling as he came around the table to his Goddaughter. “Now what’s this on your face? There’s nowhere left for a kiss little girl.”
“She’s wearing more than she’s eating, as usual of course” Hermione said as Aphrodite stuck her hand in her mouth, eating what little cake was on it.
“It’s her loss,” Draco said coming up behind Hermione. “It’s very good. You still on for babysitting tomorrow?”
“Of course, can’t miss that now can I? We have too much fun. But I am not feeding her any of that sweet potato stuff, I don’t want her spitting it in my face again,” Blaise stated.
“Can’t make any promises,” Hermione said as Aphrodite took a piece of kiwi from her mother’s hand and promptly placed it in her mouth.
“Where do you want this?” Blaise asked holding up a small gift bag
“On the table in the living room with the rest if you don’t mind, at least, that is where I asked Harry and Ron to move them,” Hermione said pointing out into the room behind her. “We’ll just let these two finish with their cake and we’ll be out to open them.”
“Sounds good,” he said. “Uncle Blaise will get that kiss later.”
Draco set his daughter down on the carpeted area of the living room, Tonks setting Teddy down moments later. Crookshanks choose that moment to walk by and Aphrodite was content to follow him over to his cat house. Teddy crawled across the carpet to the couch, where he half pulled himself up using his father’s leg. Laughing Remus picked up the blue haired child seconds before it turned red.
Blaise found a spot on the couch, moving Draco’s coat from the cushion to the corner on the back of the furniture, before sitting down.
“You know, it is sort of unnerving looking at him one second only to find the next second you look back there’s a new color,” Blaise said watching the child stand in his father’s lap, one hand with a handful of hair the other nearly digging into Remus’ eye, though all the werewolf did was smile.
“It’ll be many years before he’s controlling it, for now at this age it’s as unstable and uncontrollable as his magic,” Tonks said sitting down next to her husband and her ten month old son.
“Alright now missy, time for your presents,” Hermione said removing her daughter’s hands from the orange fur of her cat, where no matter how hard she pulled, the cat just laid back and purred.
Aphrodite protested immediately upon being removed from her living toy and struggled in her mother’s arms to be put down.
“Look what daddy has,” Hermione said as she sat down and took the present from Draco, the colourfully wrapped item catching her immediate attention.
Aphrodite reached her hands out to the item, hitting the gift from her Godmother, who was attending her last year at Hogwarts, much to her amusement. Hermione started unwrapping one end of the gift and the loose paper was immediately crushed in her little hands. The curious look that fell on her face when she ripped the paper was soon followed by giggles before she continued pulling, enjoying the sound the colourful paper made when she pulled, much to the amusement of the guests.
“Bye, thanks for coming,” Hermione said to the Weasley’s before they left one by one, through the Floo.
“Glad that’s over,” Draco said sitting down in the chair behind him. “I feel exhausted.”
“Well summon some more energy and help me clean up,” Hermione said as she began to collect paper plates and plastic cups from the surfaces of the flat.
Sighing, Draco stood up and collected a few times before walking into the kitchen. Aphrodite crawled across the floor, dragging her father’s coat, which had fallen from the couch some time during the party, across the floor like it was some security blanket. She stopped and sat near the cat house, one of her favourite places in the flat, dragging the coat closer to her, pushing her hands into the coat as if kneading it. She picked up a corner of the coat and stuck it in her mouth, which she did with almost everything these days. A small black box fell from the pocket and her attention instantly was diverted. Picking it up, she started banging it on the hard wood floor.
“Now what are doing over there sweetie,” Hermione said setting the stack of paper plates on the table next to the stack of cup that held the numerous forks she had collected.
“What have you got there?”
Hermione picked the baby up and took the velvet box from her daughter’s hands just before she heard Draco making a sound similar to choking behind her, stilling her form opening it. She turned to see Draco holding a garbage bag and a look of shock on his face.
“Draco what is this?” Hermione asked, her pulse speeding.
“Ummm...” was all he could respond with.
“Draco?”
Draco set the bag on the ground and walked over to the two. He reached his hand out, hesitating a moment before removing the little box from Hermione’s hand.
“This, uhh... isn’t exactly how I had it planned,” he said quietly. “But it seems our daughter has other plans and who am I to deny her this on her birthday.”
“Draco, what are you talking about?” she asked unsteadily, her pulse racing.
Smiling, Draco lowered himself to one knee. Tears formed in her eyes as she covered her mouth with her hand, the other hand holding Aphrodite firmly on her hip.
“Hermione Jean Granger, love of my life and the mother of my daughter, would you do me the great honour of becoming my wife?” Draco asked looking up at her sounding more confident than he actually felt as he held the now open box.
Hermione was silent a moment as she tried to regain her voice, leaving Draco waiting in almost unbearable suspense.
Giving up on the voice, she just nodded, the tears of joy falling from her eyes.
“Yes,” she whispered her voice returning, moments before he jumped up, pulling the two of them into his arms.”I love you,” he said kissing her before taking her hand to place the ring on.
Hermione watched him slide the ring on her finger, “a little Slytherin don’t you think?”
“I am quite proud of what house I come from,” Draco said smiling. “And it’ll look good with your necklace.”
She looked down at the ring on her finger, a three stone, white gold ring, the center stone an oval emerald flanked by a round diamond on either side and two smaller diamonds set in the band beside them.
“I love it, thank you,” she said kissing him. “I love you too.”
Draco held the two of them a moment before stepping back and plucking his daughter from her mother’s arms.
“I thank you for pushing me, but from now on, now more playing with daddy’s coat. That’s how surprises get ruined,” he said to the little girl before placing a kiss on her temple.
The little girl just yawned and snuggled closer to her father.
“She’s had a long eventful day, you go get her ready for bed, I’ll finish cleaning up here,” Hermione said tucking a blonde curl behind her daughter’s ear. Draco headed off down the hall to the loo to bath the baby while Hermione picked up the dropped bag and started putting the plates and cups into it.
Hermione was standing at the patio door looking up through the window at the night sky when Draco returned a half hour later.
“She fell right to sleep,” he said coming up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, Hermione immediately leaning back against his chest.
Draco nuzzled her neck and Hermione sighed in contentment.
“What do you say we start on that sibling for Aphrodite that we’ve been talking about,” Draco whispered.
Hermione turned in his arms smiling, sliding her arms up around his neck “that sounds like a good idea.”
