“You’re insane. You’ve been spending far too much time with Dominique. You’re going all soft and sentimental on me.” She muttered.
“I’m just really excited to see you. I couldn’t take it at my house. It’s so boring! Charles has a girlfriend. She wrote him this nauseating love letter. I have it.” I blabbered. I had only been at home for a day, and it had been a day too much for me. “He’s convinced that I have two boyfriends.”
“You do.” Lily insisted.
A pair of hazel eyes sparkled over Lily’s shoulder. “What’s this about Eva having two boyfriends? Little Eva?” James stepped out from behind his sister. “Bloody hell, who is this?”
I threw myself at James and gave him a big hug. “Jamesy! It’s me!” I exclaimed, laughing. Why couldn’t I have been born a Potter? James and Albus are about the coolest big brothers you could ever hope for. They were both the complete opposite of Charles. Fun, athletic, and charming. They had been the Scamander brothers before the Scamanders had been the It boys of Hogwarts. Both had played Quidditch, and both had been captain.
“You can’t be Eva. You have breasts.”
I gave James a hard whack on the forearm. “Have you taken a look at your sister lately?”
James frowned slightly. “You need to keep a closer eye on her for me, Eva.”
Lily rolled her eyes, resting a cheek on her big brother’s shoulder. “I can take perfectly good care of myself, James Sirius.”
“Are we making fun of James?” Al asked, strolling in to join us. “Hey Eva. You’ve grown up.”
“You know she stayed with us this summer, right?”
Al gave me a light hug. “Good to see you, Winters. How’s the team? Anders is taking good care of it?” Al had been the captain before Anders, and had spent the last year training him to take over. James had been captain before his little brother, and played Seeker just like his dad and cousin Hugo. Al had been our keeper before he graduated.
Lily groaned. “Don’t bring him up.”
Al raised an eyebrow. “What’s going on? I thought you and Anders were in love, Eva.”
James glanced at his little brother strangely. “Anders? Don’t you mean Lorcan?”
The Potter-Weasley family was all the same. Absolutely mad. “I’m not in love with either one of them. Just ask your sister. I’ve been telling her this all year. Anders is obsessed with Quidditch. That’s the thing he’s in love with, not me.”
“Yes, yes, Eva, you’ve been abandoned for a sport. He’ll come to his senses soon enough. He’s just a stupid boy, love.”
Her brothers both looked offended. “Well, I’m not a stupid boy. I’m a man.” James declared.
“I’m a man too!” Al added quickly. “Very manly.”
“Evs, their girlfriends are coming later in the week. You’ve got to help me terrorize them.” Lily pleaded.
James pouted. “I thought you liked Cecilia. Gracie on the other hand…” His brother smacked him in the back of the head.
Lily crossed her arms as she rolled her eyes. “Of course I like Cecilia and Gracie. But they’re my big brothers’ girlfriends. I have to harass them. It’s my duty.” She grinned at them.
I nodded my agreement. “I harass Charles about his girlfriend, and I don’t even like him.”
Al snorted at that, his eyes widening. “Charles? Charles your brother?” They were the same age, and although they hadn’t been in the same house, Al did know of Charles. Al knew everyone.
“Charles my brother. Her name is Phoebe, and she writes him very racy letters.”
The thought of that caused Al to have a laughing fit. “Charles Winters has a girlfriend who writes him racy letters… What is the world coming to?”
“Is that Eva?” Ginny Potter called as she walked into the room. “It’s so good to see you, Eva. I can’t understand why you want to be around us at this time of year though. Do you have a death wish?” She asked while hugging me.
I laughed. “What do you mean? The more Weasleys the better.”
“Famous last words.” James muttered. His mother shot him a glare.
“Rose and Hugo are coming over for dinner with Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione. Tomorrow we’re meeting your Uncle Bill’s family for lunch in Diagon Alley, and Uncle Charlie will be over for dinner. We have two days to relax, and then it’s Christmas Eve. We’ll open family presents here, and then we’re going to the Burrow for Christmas Day. All the cousins have said that they’ll be there. New Years is Uncle Percy’s, of course. Showy git.” She muttered, causing us to all start laughing. “It’s true.”
I gave Ginny another hug. She blinked in surprise before hugging me back.
“What was that for?”
“For being you.”
“Eva, that one is for you.” James pointed. The Weasleys all celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve with their own immediate family, and then another with the entire family on Christmas Day. When I was younger I had contemplated marrying one of Lily’s cousins just so I could celebrate Christmas with them every year. I couldn’t imagine a happier time.
After the first Christmas with the family, I had learned that no matter how hard I insisted, they would always get me presents, and so I made sure to get each Potter something in return. Lily had gotten a bottle of her favourite perfume, and tanning solution. It had taken me some time to convince her that I hadn’t just regifted the bottle that she had given me for my birthday. I had gotten Al and James both broom compasses, and a book about their respective positions. The Potter parents had been harder, but I had finally decided on making them a poster sized framed print of a photo of Ginny from her professional Quidditch playing days.
“A dress?” I asked suspiciously, glancing at Lily.
She smiled innocently. “It’s for New Year’s. I’m saving you from going shopping with me. I know you consider that a present.”
Lily was awful to shop with. She was incredibly critical of everything I picked out. I held up the dress. It was a ball gown with a full skirt that would go down to my feet. It was solid white with gold appliqué flowers on it, all about the size of my palm. It was beautiful, but I was a little apprehensive over its lack of straps.
“You’re going to look like a princess in it.” Ginny said gently.
“Thank you.” I smiled at Lily. I was going to get noticed in this dress. I had a feeling that had been her intention when she had picked it out for me.
She shrugged nonchalantly. “It was a present for me. It’s much more fun to shop for you without you around to complain. There’s a mask in there too.”
James glanced at his brother. “I think we’re going to have to lock the both of them up in a tower to protect them from all the men in the world.”
Al nodded his agreement. “Eva and Lily are way too young to be wearing dresses like that. You’re going to make guys freak out!”
Lily rolled her eyes. “That’s kind of the point, Al.”
“Guys aren’t supposed to freak out over you. They’re supposed to forget that you’re even a girl at all. I think you should wear a nice burlap sack to Uncle Percy’s. A really big burlap sack.”
“You’re ridiculous!” Lily complained before hitting her brother.
“No hitting each other on Christmas!” Harry protested as Lily and Al got into a fight.
Al glanced up at his dad. “But Dad, it’s not Christmas Day. It’s only Christmas Eve.”
“That doesn’t-” Harry let out an exasperated sigh. “I give up. Ginny?”
Naturally, Christmas Day was even crazier. The Weasley family was out in full force. Every cousin, aunt, and uncle was there. Dominique’s older sister Victoire even had three kids with Teddy Lupin, Harry’s godson. Victoire and Teddy were the oldest of the kids in our generation, and were the only ones to have had kids so far.
We were the youngest of the bunch, and all the other Weasley cousins had already graduated from Hogwarts. Dominique’s brother Louis was the same age as Al. He was working as a code breaker just like his father had. Their Uncle Charlie was possibly my favourite of the Weasleys. I admit, I had a bit of an old man crush on him. He was about 43 now, but he still acted like he was twenty. His tell-tale Weasley hair was starting to fade in color, but he had more hair than his younger brother Percy. Plus, since he was the only older Weasley man that was single, he was about the only one I could have a crush on without it being really wrong. I think he knew about my crush too, but he was good about playing along and joking around with me.
Hugo’s older sister Rose, who was also Al’s age was another one of my favourites. I missed having her around at school. She was a troublemaker just like her Uncle George, and had a great sense of humor and a constant wicked look to her. Rose had been working at her uncle’s store since she had graduated. Ironically, George’s own daughter Roxanne was more like Hermione Granger-Weasley than her own daughter. Rose loved to joke that they had been separated at birth, ignoring the fact that Roxanne had three years on her. Always Roxanne, never Roxie, was a Healer at St. Mungo’s. Her brother Fred was much more fun, and worked as a Hit Wizard. He liked to think that he was tough, but really, he was just as spastic as Rose or Lorcan.
Percy’s daughters were somewhere in between being boring and hyper insane. Although, I have to say, I wouldn’t call Roxanne boring like my brother. She was serious, but she was interesting, and she did have some pretty interesting stories to tell about her work. Lucy was the elder of Percy’s kids at five years older than James, and she worked for the Ministry in the House-Elf relocation department. House elves had always fascinated me. We didn’t have one at home, and the first time I had seen one had been at Hogwarts. Lucy’s younger sister Molly, who was three years older than James, was a professional Quidditch player just like Al. Molly played for the Holyhead Harpies, just like her Aunt Ginny, and Al was on the Chudley Cannons, much to the pleasure of his Uncle Ron. Amazingly, none of the Weasleys were Aurors. James had considered it, but in the end had decided to work in the Games department instead.
That was just the actual Weasley cousins. Almost everyone had a date there with them. Beyond James’ Cecilia, Al’s Gracie, and Rose’s Angus, they were all just a blur to me. Oh, and Teddy Lupin, but that was easy since he had kids with Victoire. If it hadn’t been for my friendship with Lily and Hugo, I wouldn’t have even known about those three. Louis insisted that he didn’t have time for a girlfriend, so he saved me from knowing about another person in Dominique’s family.
Teddy worked with werewolves at the Ministry, another Weasley with a more interesting Ministry job. I knew that his dad had been a werewolf, and Teddy had been a huge proponent for legislature that made it easier for werewolves to blend in with the rest of society. I wasn’t sure what Victoire had done for work, but she was a stay at home mum now.
Percy spent all of Christmas Day bragging about the party he had planned for New Year’s. He supposedly had an unreasonably large house because of his and Audrey’s top level jobs in the Ministry. Lily had once told me that he had never taken a single vacation from work. I liked to imagine that he was what Charles would be like in twenty years.
Of course since they were the Weasleys, there was plenty of bickering. Rose and Roxanne got in an argument over who had received which jumper from their gran, since both were a shade of green with a white R on the front. Fred and Louis tried to determine who knew the best hexes, and Lucy got caught in the crossfire. It turned out that she knew a better hex than either of them. Then, of course, the Weasley cousins got out a fleet of brooms and had an impromptu game of Quidditch. No matter what I do, I can’t escape from the sport. And, of course, James and Al tried to convince me to play with them, just like Anders would. I refused, insisting on being the announcer instead.
It was absolutely insane, but I loved it.
