Hermione awoke late on Sunday morning after her extremely late night. She noticed as she dragged herself out of bed that she was the last one left in her dormitory. Bleary eyed she had a shower, got dressed and made her way down to breakfast.
“Hermione! We were wondering where you were. Did you just wake up?” asked Harry as she approached their table. Harry was sitting with Ron, Lavender and Ginny.
“Oh hi,” she replied, “Yeah I guess I slept in a bit,”
“You still look tired. Were you up late?” asked Ginny.
“No. I just didn’t sleep well,” she replied quickly.
As Hermione filled her plate with food, her eyes wandered over to the Slytherin table. She was shocked when her eyes locked immediately with Malfoy’s cold grey ones. He stared hard at her. After a moment she looked away. Why was he looking at her? Hadn’t he made it perfectly clear that he wanted nothing to do with her?
“Hermione?” Ron asked.
“Sorry? What did you say?” Hermione asked.
“We were just wondering if you wanted to come and watch Harry, Ginny and I practice today. You promised you would, remember?” he said.
“Sure. Of course I’ll come,” she replied.
“Great, you can watch with Lavender,” Ron said.
“Yeah. That sounds fun,” said Hermione her eyes quickly straying back to the Slytherin table where Malfoy was still staring at her. Hermione frowned. What did this mean? Did he want something? Had he changed his mind?
At that moment the owl post arrived, distracting Hermione from her thoughts. Two large owls landed in front of her, one with her Daily Prophet and another with a small envelope with her name written in small handwriting on the front. She didn’t recognise the handwriting. Remembering what had happened with Victor’s letter the previous week she shifted herself away from her friends to make sure no one could read the letter. Inside the envelope was a small piece of parchment with a short message written on it.
I want to talk to you. Meet me. Same place as last night. 8pm.
Hermione stared at the note and then looked instinctively in his direction. His eyes still hadn’t left her. She looked away quickly. She scrunched up the note and shoved it in her pocket. She didn’t know what to do. His behaviour last night didn’t really make her feel comfortable with the idea of meeting him again. But on the other hand she was extremely curious to know what he had to say.
“You finished eating Hermione?” Harry asked.
“Yeah, sure,” she replied.
“Great. We’re going down to the Quidditch pitch, you coming?” he asked.
“Yeah, let’s go,” she said standing up and following her friends.
She glanced once more back at the Slytherin table. Their eyes met and she nodded her head slightly just once and then turned back to her friends before anyone saw anything.
She was distracted all the way down the Quidditch pitch. Before she knew it she was sitting up in the stands with Lavender. Hermione was vaguely aware of Lavender babbling away about her Ronnikins.
“What about you Hermione? Do you like anyone?” Lavender asked suddenly.
At once her mind flickered back to the day before. Draco’s revelations in the Room of Requirement. Had they really been in love? She remembered the way he’d looked at her. How soft and inviting his eyes had been and the way he’d held her when she was upset.
“Hermione?” Lavender asked.
“No… no there’s nobody,” she said but she felt her cheeks flush.
“You’re blushing!” Lavender squealed, “That means there must be somebody! Tell me! Tell me everything!”
“There’s nothing to tell,” Hermione said.
“C’mon Hermione. Who is it? Is he cute?” Lavender pressed on.
Hermione surprised herself by laughing.
“That means he is!” Lavender said, “Do you know if he likes you?”
“Uh…” Hermione stuttered, “I‘m not sure,”
“You know, you could be really pretty if you just straightened your hair a little and maybe wore a bit of make-up,” Lavender suggested.
“Oh, thanks but I don’t know,” Hermione said.
“I could show you how,” Lavender said excitedly, “We could have a girls night. It’d be really fun!”
“Maybe,” said Hermione unsure.
“Maybe next weekend!” Lavender said.
Hermione tuned out again as Lavender launched into plans for the girls night.
Once the boys and Ginny were finished practice they all headed back up to the castle as a group. They went back up to the Gryffindor common room where Harry and Ron had to finish off some of their homework. Hermione had already finished all of hers so she settled down in an armchair to read a book. She found herself reading the same line over and over again. She couldn’t concentrate. She was anxious about what was going to happen tonight. As the boys finished their homework Hermione spent her afternoon replaying the past weeks events in her head. Everything had changed so much. She had changed so much and she began to wonder if tonight things would change even more.
