Here is the story, plain and simple. This began it all.
James Potter looked curiously at the boy boarding the train. He looked a lot like a bat, with a smock under his large coat. It was Severus Snape. James didn't know that though. He also didn't know this moment would change his life forever. The boy tripped on the first step and James caught him.
"Thanks." the boy mumbled.
"No problem. You're very lightweight." Both James and the boy laughed at that.
"I think being here will fix that!" the boy laughed.
They continued talking to one another until Severus caught up with Lily. Then Lily and Severus got into a compartment. James followed with another boy.
Lily and Severus were talking. James heard Severus mention trying to be in Slytherin.
"Who wants to be in Slytherin? I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?" he turned to the boy next to him.
"My whole family was in Slytherin." he replied.
"And I thought you were pretty good!" they laughed together.
"Come on, Sev. Let's leave." Lily said. The boys started laughing. Severus (from now on referred to as Sev) and Lily left.
After the sorting James caught up with Sev. "Hey," he said. "I'm sorry about earlier."
"It's okay." Sev smiled.
"Maybe we should keep our friendship a secret."
"That would be smart. You can tell some good friends. I won't tell Lily though."
"Yeah. Do you mind if sometimes I try out some tricks on you? Catch up with you later." James ran to catch up with his house.
"No!" Sev called back.
Sev smiled again. He stepped into his common room. It was large. Larger than his house on Spinner's End. And to think, this beautiful friendship started with him tripping.
James Potter was talking with his newfound friends, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew.
"Really?"
"Yeah. Since I was eight."
Remus had just told them he was a werewolf. They had all promised not to tell. James had also told them about Sev. None of them had a problem with it. They all agreed to keep everything a secret.
"Maybe tomorrow we can explore the hidden passages." Sirius suggested.
"Yeah! My older brother told me about one into the Honeyduke's cellar! If we use that one, we can go to Hogsmeade before we're old enough! I'll need to tell Sev." James exclaimed.
He wrote a letter. Once he signed 'Severus Snape' on the outside, he sent it off with his owl. He got a response almost immediately.
It read: 'James, That sounds exciting. My free period is at 1-2. I know yours is 1:30-2:30. I liked getting a letter from you, my parents probably won't send any, but please don't send them in the middle of the night. It is almost midnight. I'm okay with you telling some friends about me. As long as they're trustworthy. Ha. Nobody's trustworthy. You can still tell them, though. Sev'
James laughed at the last part. "Though I wonder why he was awake, he's right, guys. We have classes tomorrow. We need sleep." So they all went to bed.
