I stop in shock. I moved his jacket to get my dress, and there lies a small black box. My heart starts thumping wildly. He’s going to propose. Don’t get ahead of yourself, Tonks. It may just be a pair of earrings for Christmas. I close my eyes, and open the box. I feel, (I don’t want to ruin the whole surprise,) and it’s a ring. He’s going to propose! “Oh!” I exclaim. It comes out of my mouth before I can stop myself.

“Everything okay, Dora?” Remus asks. I jump, but he’s still outside. He must have heard me.

“Yeah, perfect Remus.” I cannot believe it. I wonder when he’s going to do it.

“I’ll wait for you downstairs.”

“Okay,” I say, not really paying attention. I put the box and ring back in his pocket. I quickly slip the dress on. I look in the mirror. I scrunch up my face and turn my hair a deep red, then my eyes a dark emerald green. I like the effect. I slip my flats on (hey, I can’t wear heels,) and open the door.

“What’s made you so happy?” Sirius asks.

“What are you talking about?” I say.

“Going to a Christmas party with Remus wouldn’t make you smile like that.”  I look a Sirius.

“He’s going to propose,” I gush. The look on Sirius’ face tells me I’m right. “I found the box on the bed; it must have fallen out of his coat pocket. Sirius, he’s proposing!”

“Don’t get your hopes up, Tonks. Don’t expect it.”

“Are you saying that ring isn’t mine?” I ask confused.

“No, I’m saying don’t expect him to ask anytime soon.” What does that mean? "He has the ring, surely he’s going to do it soon.” He makes a non-committal noise. “How long has he had that ring?” I ask.

Sirius sighs. “Since the first of November.” November... November!

“What?” I exclaim. He just nods.

“He’s nervous. He says he has to do it ‘at the right time.’” Sirius shakes his head.  “Better get down there, you guys are going to be late.”

I take a deep breath and walk down the stairs. I see Remus, and smile. Whether or not he asks soon, he wants to. He has the ring.

“You look amazing, Nymphadora.” Did he just use my full name? I’ll let it slide. I grin at him.

“Thanks, you don’t look so bad yourself.” I walk over and lightly kiss his lips. Sirius coughs. “Oh, shut up, or I won’t be as chaste when you’re around.” I smile at him. “Come here, Sirius. I want a hug before I leave.” I met Sirius halfway across the room, and give my cousin a hug. “Now, I want you to be happy while I’m gone. We’ll be back soon, with lots of food.” He smiles at me. “I wish I could take you Sirius,” I sigh.

“Yeah, but if I’m there, I’ll get arrested. Then kissed, and you’ll lose your job, and that’ll be it.” He smiles at me. “You two go have fun. Don’t worry about me.”  I hadn’t been too trusting of Sirius at first, but I knew Mum  trusted him, so I gave him a chance. He’s still the same man he was when he would play with me when I was little. He ushers us out the door.

I loop my arm through Remus’, and we Apparate to the correct destination. I’m a bit unsteady when we land, but Remus catches me. We walk through the empty Atrium, make it through the lifts, and we’re in the Auror department. “Tonks, good to see you.” Kingsley’s booming voice calls out. Everyone looks at us. I pull Remus over to Kingsley.

“Thanks for the welcome, Kings,” I say sarcastically. He just laughs. “So, did we miss anything?”

“No, Rufus isn’t even here yet. How are you doing, Remus?” I look at him. He looks nervous.

“I’m fine,” he says. He sounds okay. I give his hand a light squeeze, just to be sure. Suddenly, loud music starts playing. “I thought this was a Christmas party.” Remus shouts confusedly over the din of the music.

“Remus, we’re Aurors. When we say party, we mean party! C’mon, let’s dance.” I drag him onto the improvised dance floor. There are a lot of people here. Soon we’re squished up against each other.

“This is dancing?” he asks, looking around.

“It’s simple, Remus. See,” I take his hands and place them on my hips. Then I start moving. He raises his hands to my waist. I push them back down. “They stay there.” He soon gets the hang of it. After a while, he pulls me off the dance floor. We find a table.

“I’m going to get drinks, stay here.” He walks off. He’s halfway to the drink table when he turns and comes back. “What do you want?”

“Water for now,” I say. He’s gone again. Mark, a guy who works in the Auror office, comes over. He’s been trying to get me to date him for two years now.

“Hey, baby. What’s up?”

“Don’t call me baby, Mark. Just waiting on a drink.”

He smiles at me. “Yeah, I think it’s kinda hot in here too. What do you say we go somewhere a little cooler?” He puts his hand on my knee.

“I don’t think so, Mark.” I move his hand.

“C’mon, baby, don’t be like that.” He puts his hand back on my thigh.

“I said no.” I say, removing his hand for the second time. I was starting to lose my patients.

He looks at me. “Look, just once. That’s all I’m asking.” He says, putting his hand higher still.

Suddenly, Marks gone. “I think the lady said no.” Remus has him buy the collar of his shirt. “I would suggest you leave her alone.” Mark glares at him. “I’m sorry,” Remus says, his voice dripping with menace, “We haven’t been introduced. I’m Remus Lupin: Werewolf. What’s your name?” Mark’s face drains of colour. “Mark Collins,” he whispers.

“Yes, well, Mr. Collins, I would suggest you leave Miss. Tonks here alone, or you’ll have me to answer to. Understood?”

Mark nods. Kingsley comes over. “What’s the problem?”

“This man is threatening me.” Mark complained.

“He was making unwanted advances. Forcing himself upon Miss. Tonks here.” Remus says. Kingsley nods. “We cleared everything up.” Remus releases Mark. He was kind of scary talking to Mark. Remus sits down. He looks like he wants to say something, he’s biting his lip so hard it has to be about to bleed.

“Thank you,” I say. He smiles.

“Of course. I couldn’t let him feel you up, now could I?” He smiles his marauders grin. “That’s my job.” I blush and sip my water. A slow song comes on. It’s old, but I like it. I look at Remus. His eyes seem unfocused. “Remus, what’s wrong?” I ask.

“Nothing,” he says, looking at me. “Let’s go dance."
