Chapter 24 : 'Family Issues'
| ||Rating: Mature||Chapter Reviews: 19|
Background: Font color:
“Cane...Cane’s...your cousin?” I said slowly.
“Yeah,” She said lamely.
“And...and you knew that his dad killed my mum?” I asked.
“And you didn’t think to tell me this? You didn’t think to tell me that you knew who my parents were?” I said growing rather angry.
She looked at me before letting out a sigh.
“I didn’t know how,” She said quietly.
“YOU DIDN’T KNOW HOW?! YOU DIDN’T THINK THAT PERHAPS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT MY PARENTS?! MY PARENTS HEMERA!” I cried.
Her gaze dropped to the floor.
“I...” She started.
“You know what don’t even fucking bother!” I snapped before turning on my heel and walking out, conjuring my patronus and sending a quick message to Moody and Dumbledore, claiming it was important. I’d speak to them later, preferably in person.
The problem with being pissed off with Hemera was that...well I missed her. She was my best friend and now I was stuck with only Ace which was quite enough to drive anyone mental. Sirius hated me. James hated me. Remus...well I don’t know if he hated me but we hadn’t spoken in a while and Pete never did anything but squeak so I suppose that wasn’t much of a loss. I hadn’t really spoken to Franny or Lily much either which left me stuck with all those horrible bitches I happened to loathe...who were all gossiping about me because they were still under the impression that I was in fact pregnant.
That rumour just seemed resistant to disappear and worse than that I was quite certain several of the professors were under that impression too.
I could deny it until I was blue in the face but it didn’t seem to make much difference.
Hence the reason I spent so much of my time in the library looking over wizarding records, trying to find anything that would tell me about my parents. It would have been easier to ask Hemera but I was beyond pissed and didn’t particularly want to talk to her. I knew I couldn’t stay mad at her forever but I’d try.
“This is your fault,” I growled at Ace, moodily pushing round the food on my plate.
“What did I do?” He grunted through a mouthful of food.
“You’re the one who got into a fight with Sirius, you’re the one that pissed Sirius off so much he doesn’t bloody speak to me all because he thinks that I’ve picked you over him!” I snapped.
In essence I just needed someone to blame.
He raised an eyebrow at me.
“It’s your own fault love, you were too stubborn to go over to him,” He shrugged.
“That’s because...well..shut up!” I snapped whacking him.
“Owww! Iris stop fucking doing that!” Ace cried indignantly, shielding his arm.
“Why can’t you just get that fixed,” I snapped looking at his broken wrist.
He glared at me.
“Fuck off,” He snapped.
“Ace,” I said shortly, pulling his hand towards me.
“Leave me alone,” He said childishly.
I rolled my eyes.
“You’re just going to mess it up further,” I said childishly.
“S’not like you care, go shag Sirius,” He said childishly.
I rolled my eyes before getting to my feet and stepping over the bench, dragging him to his feet.
“Come,” I said.
“Wha...” He started.
“Hospital wing,” I said.
“I’m not going to the fucking hospital wing,” He said in aggravation.
“Err yes you are,” I said.
He opened his mouth to speak.
“You have no say in the matter,” I told him before dragging him off.
He grumbled all the way to the hospital wing but I simply ignored him, thankful to be away from the speculative glances I received sitting in the hall.
“You know you should really cheer up a bit, I hate it when you’re moody,” Ace said randomly. I looked at him.
“What? I’m just saying. How comes you’re not talking to Hemera anymore?” He asked.
“It’s nothing,” I said.
“Doesn’t seem like nothing. I thought she was your best friend,” He said.
“It’s none of your business,” I snapped.
He shrugged, his arm remaining around my shoulders.
“I just think you need someone, you can’t be round me all the time, you’ll end up going mental,” He teased gently. I looked at him before sighing, leaning my head against his shoulder as my arm moved around his waist.
“It’s complicated,” I said quietly.
“So? That’s a shit excuse Iris, if you miss her then go fucking talk to her, stop being such a stubborn bint,” He said.
I looked up and glared at him.
“The truth hurts love,” He grinned.
I looked at him, before a ghost of a smile passed my lips.
He beamed at me.
“Cheer up,” He said nudging me gently.
I laughed as I pushed open the door.
“Be careful Ace I might think you’re beginning to care,” I said innocently.
“Nah, that would just be you deluding yourself,” He smirked.
“Oh really?” I said lightly.
“Oh yeah,” He grinned.
I laughed, pulling him in and occupying one of the seats.
“So...” I started.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Ace suddenly growled.
I turned to see...oh great, Mary and Sirius...what the hell were they doing here?
“Wh...” Sirius started.
Ace however ignored him, getting to his feet and marching over to...oh his younger brother.
“What’s wrong with you, you Pollock?” Ace said.
“Nothing,” Aiden scowled despite the fact that he was holding a cloth now soaked in blood against his nose which looked to be bleeding copiously.
What was it with these Ace boys?
Ace roughly pulled him to his feet with his good hand, looking at him.
“Get off me you bastard!” Aiden snapped.
Oh the brotherly affection.
Ace let go of him, looking at him.
“Well what happened?” He asked.
“I got into a fight,” He said irritably.
“...oh right then,” Ace shrugged, sitting back down.
I looked at him.
“Err...why?” I asked.
Aiden’s scowl deepened and muttered something under his breath.
“Told you you’d get the crap beaten out of you,” Ace said cheerfully as if he found the thought decidedly uplifting.
Aiden glared at him.
“Funny ‘cause Dad’ll flip when he finds out you got her pregnant,” He said motioning at me.
My gaze flattened.
“I’m not fucking pregnant,” I said irritably.
“Oh really because it really looks like it’s beginning to show,” Mary said innocently as she looked up from her magazine.
My gaze snapped over to hers.
“Heck are you calling me fat?” I asked in mock surprise.
“You know it could have been avoided if you could have kept your knickers in place,” She told me sweetly.
I looked at her for a moment before I simply burst out laughing.
“You’re...you’re telling me that I’m a sl...slag?” I giggled.
She lowered her magazine.
“I’m not the one that’s pregnant,” She said sweetly.
I just began laughing harder.
She just looked at me.
“Mummy and daddy may not know about your reputation but believe me darling, the entire school does,” I said when I’d calmed down enough to form coherent sentences.
She opened her mouth to retort but was interrupted by Madame Pomfrey.
“Aimes...oh...Iris,” She said.
I looked up, wiping tears of mirth from my eyes.
It was a great day when the greatest slag in the entire school calls you a slag.
“Go on,” I said to Ace.
“Aww Ace, did you hurt yourself,” Aiden suddenly cooed.
Ace’s expression darkened.
“Fuck off,” He growled at him.
“My god how old are you?!” I cried, rolling my eyes, dragging him away and into the office.
“I suppose you’re here about...your condition,” Madame Pomfrey said carefully.
I looked at her, taking a moment to realise what she was saying before rolling my eyes.
“That’s just a rumour,” I said dismissively.
She just looked at me for a moment, her eyes wide.
“Oh...oh well...I apologize,” She said.
“Good,” I said shortly before turning to Ace.
“Ace’s hands broken,” I said.
“I don’t need it fucking fixed,” He snapped.
I rolled my eyes.
“Stop being such a stubborn bastard,” I said.
He glared at me.
It did take a while but eventually we managed to convince him...well actually it was more of a case of me distracting him while Madame Pomfrey snuck up on him with her wand and fixed it while he was busy arguing with me.
He didn’t even realise.
“Oh well...I guess you can’t force him,” Madame Pomfrey ‘sighed’.
“Oh dear,” I said.
“Ruddy sh...” He grumbled as he moved to the door.
I followed, sending Madame Pomfrey a grin just as I closed the door.
“Bloody hate the fucking...wait...” Ace said flexing his hand.
I looked round at him innocently.
It had taken him 5 minutes to notice and were now several corridors away from the hospital wing.
“What?” I asked innocently.
He turned and glared at me.
“You’re a pain in the arse,” He muttered.
“What and you’re not? ‘Oh I have a broken hand but I can’t do anything about it because I’m such a bloke’,” I said rolling my eyes.
“Shut up,” He snapped.
“No, make me,” I said innocently.
He grinned at me before pulling me round and in front of him and backing me up against the banister of the stairs we were just descending.
“Ace! The staircase is about to move,” I whined.
He grinned, ignoring me.
“See love, this is where I have won where many others have failed. I am VERY good at shutting you,” He smirked at me.
“You can never shut me up!” I exclaimed.
“Is that a promise?” He said.
“Y...” I started when he (if I may so rather predictably) captured my lips in a kiss.
"Told you,” He said when he’d broken away, backing me up against the banister, my arms moving around his neck.
Nothing like I good random snog to dispel thoughts of pregnancy.
"So..." Ace murmured as he kissed along my neck.
"Mmm," I hummed, my hand moving through his hair.
"I thought maybe you might want to useful,” He said before switching sides.
"And seeing as it's my birthday coming up...wanna come up with a place for me?" He asked smoothly, his voice remaining a low soothing rumble.
It was only after agreeing rather absently that I realised I'd just fallen for yet another of his tricks. I rolled my eyes pushing him off.
"Wait a minute that’s cheating," I said.
"Ah but it's not, you see we never came up with any rules." He pointed out.
"But then you'd owe me big time when it came to mine," I said.
"Deal,” He said.
"I don't trust you," I sang.
"Well a promise is all I can give you," He said.
I looked at him, tilting my head to the side before I gave a smile.
"Fine," I said.
“So any ideas? Oh and you better look good too,” He grinned. I raised an eyebrow.
"I always look good," I said.
"That's m'girl,” He grinned.
"Don't think I'm going to make some huge effort just because it's your birthday," I said. He scoffed.
"Of course you will it's the party of the year and we both know you don't like to be beaten,” He said nudging my neck teasingly with his nose.
I scowled. Sadly it was true. I swear everyone knew when the guys birthday was. Being seen at Ace's parties was like you'd 'reached'.
Of course I'd received an invitation every year, I went but it was simply a matter of common courtesy. Ace would tell Elliot, Elliot would tell Ali and Ali would tell me. The same applied when it came to my party only mine wasn't so selective, I just told a few people casually and they spread it round. It was like we'd been competing since first year. I'd won hands down then as I shared my birthday with Bridgett and being invited to Bridgett’s party was one thing but to actually share a party was something she'd never ever allowed before.
To this day people still thought she was my older sister.
"You know giving you a venue would mean you forfeiting this year. It's not how we play, remember?" I said sweetly.
"It doesn't count. We're going out,” He said.
"You did this on purpose didn't you? You planned this whole thing! You asked me out so that you could use me!" I cried poking him. He grinned.
"Well I just thought I might try something new,” He said.
"You cheeky bugger. I am not doing anything to help your party in fact if you push too far I won't even come," I sniffed. He chuckled.
"You can't help yourself. You're a party animal. You may be a boring sarcastic bitch the majority of the time but we both know when you're in the mood you can't resist,” He said.
"Thanks Ace," I said sarcastically.
"No probs babe. I swear that if you help with mine, I'll help with yours,” He said.
I looked at him before rolling my eyes.
"Jesus Ace," I laughed before moving my hand through his and moving away from him, tugging on it slightly.
"So..." he said.
"I have somewhere to show you but you have to promise me you won't tell anyone else," I said.
"Hmmm...sounds good,” He smirked.
I rolled my eyes, taking his hand and pulling him towards the staircases. I don't honestly know why I was showing him the room of requirement but it was an impulse. If there was one thing I knew about Ace it was that he didn't like to be beaten, I knew he'd love it, I mean Jesus you could make it whatever you wanted it to be, and I doubted highly that he'd ever tell anyone about it seeing as it was pretty much the coolest place in the castle.
"Ok so you have to tell me what you want," I said.
"You know what I want,” He smirked. I rolled my eyes.
"Ace," I said in a bored voice.
"What do you mean what do I want? You can't just make a room,” He said.
"Yes you can. Tell me what you want and I'll write it down so we can remember," I said. He looked at me oddly.
"Or do you not have enough brain cells left for that?" I said.
"Ok so a swimming pool, I like you in a bikini...” He started.
"I don't have a bikini and you're also going to have drunk people diving in and possibly drowning," I said flatly.
"Bikini's are optional,” He said waggling his eyebrows.
"I don't like swimming anyway," I said ignoring his last comment.
So it took a hell of a lot of time to get the bloke to actually concentrate but eventually we managed it. It ended up being a pool party (he wouldn't let go of the idea) but I charmed it to deflect drunks (I don't know how Ace always managed to bring out the boring side of me) it was a huge space; the pool alone seemed to stretch on for ages. There was a tiki bar on a slightly raised platform with a large part cleared for a dance floor round the other side of it. There was a pair of huge stereos on the furthest end away from the pool and speakers built into the pool so that you'd be able to hear the music beneath the water. The walls and ceiling were simply glass and it was possible to see the stars overhead. All in all it was pretty good.
"Bloody hell," Ace said moving up the steps to another raised platform filled with bean bags, floor cushions and coffee tables to lounge about on...couldn’t actually be quite sure where the coffee table had actually come from but I guess it wasn’t too bad an idea.
"There are toilets under this bit too by the way,” I said leaning back against the railings and motioning down beneath us at the other set of steps leading down to the toilets and changing rooms.
"By the way you'll have to bring your drink and food if you’re going to bother but I think the house elves will be more than happy to help," I said.
"I happen to like you a lot more now,” He said moving his arms around me and kissing my neck. I smiled, turning in his arms and kissing him.
“Ooo be careful there Ace,” I smirked.
I'm not actually sure how we got to it but we ended up having a rather long snogging session. We weren't even together properly...or maybe we were...it was confusing. All I cared was that he was a rather good kisser...not that I’d actually ever tell him that but still. We actually ended up staying in there the majority of the day...and the scary thing was I didn’t even notice...which may of course have something to do with the fact that Ace thought it would be funny to throw me into the pool.
...Have I ever mentioned that I can’t actually swim?
No one ever really taught me and seeing as I greatly disliked making a fool out of myself I didn’t learn because I didn’t want to have to go through the whole embarrassing admitting I couldn’t swim despite being 17 thing.
Ace just thought I was being funny when I began spluttering etc due to the fact that I was then drowning...until he eventually pulled me out.
“Bloody hell Iris, what’s wrong with you?!” He panted, as soaking wet as I was seeing he had actually dived in after me...after quite a while of watching attempting to keep myself from drowning thing.
“YOU BASTARD!” I cried once I’d stopped coughing up water.
“Owwww!” He cried when I whacked him hard.
“I COULD HAVE DROWNED!” I cried.
He opened his mouth to retort, looking defensive before he paused, looking at me before he burst out laughing.
“Y...yo...you...you can’t fucking swim?!” He cackled practically rolling on the floor laughing.
I glared at him.
“Well what do you think?” I said rudely.
He grinned at me, still chuckling slightly.
“Bastard,” I breathed moving over to where my stuff was and picking up my robe and bag.
“O...oh I...Iris just...don’t be so bloody...dr...dramatic,” He said still laughing.
“Fuck off,” I snapped my cheeks now uncharacteristically hot as I felt the embarrassment and humiliation begin to take their toll. I hated people laughing at me.
“Ok ok I’m sorry,” Ace said eventually, intercepting me as I started towards the door.
“I said fuck off,” I snapped.
“Ah cheer up misery guts, I’m sorry I chucked you in ok? I thought you could swim but...obviously you can’t,” He said snorting slightly with suppressed laughter. I turned and glared at him again.
“Ok look, I’ll make it up to you,” He said pushing my stuff out of my hands before beginning to unbutton his shirt.
“What the hell are you doing?!” I cried.
He looked at me before laughing.
“Taking off my shirt, I thought it was obvious,” He said.
“Seeing you shirtless is not recompense!” I cried angrily.
“That’s just because you’ve never seen me shirtless before,” He grinned, waggling his eyebrows.
“A....” I started.
“Oh stop being so bloody miserable, I’m kidding with you, I’m teaching you how to swim...I suggest you take off your jumper...and shoes obviously and...well...your top...” He started.
“I am not stripping for you!” I cried.
“You know it saddens me how bloody pure you are,” He breathed.
“Look I won’t touch you ‘inappropriately’...unless you want me to of course,” He grinned.
“I don’t trust you,” I told him.
“Fine, suit yourself but you know you’re not going to get through the party without being thrown in at some point,” He said innocently.
I looked at him.
“And I’m not saving you,” He told me pleasantly.
I glared before starting to unbutton my shirt.
He looked at me.
“What...you’re actually doing it?” He said.
“What does it look like?” I growled, pushing off my heels.
“Bloody hell you’ve shrunk,” He teased.
I failed to look amused, pulling out my wand and getting rid of my mascara and eyeliner (it had said it was waterproof but I wanted to be on the safe side) before shimmying out of my skirt.
“Stop staring,” I said flatly without looking up as I tied my hair up into a ponytail before continuing to undo my shirt.
“Bloody hell,” He breathed.
“I’m holding you by the ‘no inappropriate touching’ promise you know,” I said.
“Everything I know is wrong,” He breathed, sounding horrified...that wasn’t right.
I looked up.
“Wha...” I started.
“Cotton underwear? Really Iris? You wear plain white cotton underwear?” He said.
“...yes?” I said.
He shook his head slowly.
“You really are a virgin,” He said looking quite frankly haunted.
I raised an eyebrow.
“And what’s wrong with them?” I demanded.
He just looked at me.
“There is nothing wrong with them!” I said defensively.
“They’re comfortable and...” I started.
“You can’t be fucking serious! You can’t do that Iris! This is...like finding out that Father Christmas isn’t real! You have all...all that...” He said motioning at me.
“On the outside and all that stuff and...the tight things...” He continued motioning around his chest area.
“And then you have white cotton underwear with flowers on them,” He finished.
I really failed to see the problem.
“Loads of girls wear them,” I said slowly.
“Yeah girls like Evans and whatever that other one’s called...the one on the quidditch team, Mary wears nice little lacy...” He started.
“You’re sick,” I said looking at him.
“You’re upset because I don’t wear some skinny piece of crap that goes up my arse? Err no thank you. There are plenty of people who wear underwear like this and plenty of them have perfectly normal relationships,” I said.
He looked at me, shaking his head.
“That’s like you telling me you’re a Buddhist who believes equality and treating people nicely and crap,” He said.
I looked at him flatly.
“Are you going to teach me to swim or not?” I said flatly.
He sighed before nodding. It was of course completely ridiculous but I guess that was Ace in a nut shell. After he stopped moaning about my choice of underwear he returned to teasing me about being unable to swim...I then whacked him and all was fine after that.
I decided that I actually didn’t mind swimming that much, the feeling of gliding through the water was actually quite nice...oh apart from the fact that I was pretty sure chlorine wasn’t good for my hair.
“Ace,” I said gently, pulling on my now dry clothes.
“Yeah?” He said.
“You won’t tell anyone will you?” I asked.
“What about your crap choice of underwear?” He said.
“No,” I said rolling my eyes.
“I mean about the whole...not being able to swim thing.” I said.
“Oh...yeah sure,” He said with a shrug, throwing his arm over my shoulder.
I smiled at him before kissing him on the cheek.
We went back several times over the next few days as well as spending pretty much every bloody waking second in each other’s presence which makes me wonder how we didn’t both end up going mental. The pregnancy rumours were still flying with renewed vigour, everyone was now convinced that Ace was the father and that he was ‘being supportive’ and in some accounts he’d ‘openly said that he would be supporting both me and the child’. Ace did not like this...at all...so he went about acting like more of an idiot than usual to ‘set the records straight’. This resulted in him retaining his ‘bad boy’ image...and yet managing to still somehow be the ‘loving boyfriend’...at the same time. Neither of us enjoyed this much as it was only a matter of time before they started calling us ‘cute’. I guess we should have been thankful for small mercies, it was rather difficult to brand out names together so we were saved from the horror of a ‘couple name’. Meanwhile Sirius grew ever more distant and ever more hostile. It was like there was a distinctive split between the school. Supporters of Gryffindor, Sirius and Mary, supporters of Slytherin and Ace and I, it got ridiculously out of hand...although Mary did attempt to take advantage of the situation and take over which was sooo not happening. The stupid thing was that both pairs were a mix. For the four of us it was just who had the most sway.
Mary Tottering: resident slag, second to the Queen Bee ‘throne’, daughter of a millionaire, pretty (pfft that would depend on what you call pretty), dating Sirius Black.
Iris Tear: Queen Bee, Queen Bee since arrived, supposedly pregnant, The Charm, tamed Ace Aimes, heartbreaker, ridiculously good looking (not just my opinion I assure you).
Sirius Black, the ‘good guy’, one of the star players in the quidditch team, ‘likeable’ (yeah right), joint 1st in the list of ‘Hottest guys of Hogwarts 1979’, dating Mary Tottering.
Ace Aimes, heartbreaker, joint 1st in the list of ‘Hottest guys of Hogwarts 1979’, ‘bad boy’/ loving future father, dating Iris Tear, kicked off the Slytherin quidditch team.
It was a popularity contest to be honest, I mean Ace and Sirius did occasionally fight but of course it was never anything as complicated as the tug of war Mary and I were playing. We both flexed our grips on those around us. She had most of the Gryffindor ‘populars’ other than Pearl and Leda (who although most probably hated my guts seemed genuinely taken by Ace...poor girl) and a few from her own house while I drew on my contacts outside of my house, going to the Ravenclaw slags (despite the fact that I hated them). Hufflepuff was unanimous in their favour, I’d been smart enough a long time ago to be nice to Tamsin Toil (leader of the Hufflepuff corner) and so it was easy to draw a favour, that’s Hufflepuff’s for you, loyal as hell. Not to mention there was a lot less politics among the Hufflepuff’s, the general hierarchy was a lot clearer cut and tended to remain fixed so when she moved they all moved with her. I didn’t speak to Tamsin much but she was someone I generally didn’t mind. I was mostly the ‘Queen’ of the slags but that of course didn’t mean I actually had their loyalty. It was the same with Ace really, we were known for being on top, being popular etc, the other side was simply attempting to bring that whole thing down.
I’m really not joking when I say; it was war.
The thing was though, I was kind of miserable. I’d lost my friends and the ones I did have I could or wouldn’t speak to. I wasn’t talking to Hemera (which drove me mad, I missed her like crazy...but refused to be the one to patch it up when she was so clearly in the wrong), I couldn’t really talk to Lily as although she was still nice and normal etc she was dating James and I didn’t want to be the rift between them, Franny again was the same as Lily although she had greater pressure as Sirius would have thrown a HUGE hissy fit if he’d seen her so much as talking to me and she was too nice to tell him to piss off so I decided it best to leave well alone, for blatantly obvious reasons I couldn’t talk to Sirius although I had to admit I did kind of miss him, Sirius would have flipped if I’d attempted to speak to James, Remus or Pete so I just didn’t try. Katy of course was quite frankly thrilled. It was the moment she’d been waiting for, a chance to bring me down.
The only person I could really talk to (without my every word being taken down and passed round as some kind of new delicious rumour) was Ace and he was hardly a desirable friend, not to mention he was also my boyfriend and I made a point of having my own separate entity and friends when dating. Tight relationships lead to messy break ups, another good lesson delivered by none other than my dear Bridgett.
I couldn’t possibly ever make proper friends with Tamsin or any of the other ‘populars’ due to the fact that they gossiped like mental.
The thing was I didn’t even mind being alone but during a time when people were all too eager to see my being on my own as some kind of form of weakness it seemed stupid.
I just wished I could be surrounded by people I actually liked.
I sighed, leaning my chin against my palm.
It was horrible. Funny how much more you miss something that you’ve had and how little you would have done if you’d never had it in the first place.
“Hey Iris,” Pearl said cheerfully sitting down next to me.
“Hi,” I said somewhat glumly.
The sad thing was that of late I’d even started warming to Pearl...things were bad.
“Hemera’s looking for you by the way,” She told me.
I glared at my plate.
“Great,” I said sarcastically.
“She looks sad,” She said.
“Good,” I growled.
“No. It’s not good. You’re supposed to be sad when your friends are sad,” She said.
It was all so simple in Pearl’s world.
“She’s not my friend,” I said tersely.
“Yes she is, you gossip about people with her in Japanese all the time,” She said.
“...how did you know we were speaking Japanese?” I asked.
“I speak Chinese Mandarin and Japanese, my dad says that they’ll be the pioneers of the future,” She told me as if reciting it.
I just looked at her.
“You know Pearl you’re actually...you’re actually kind of smart...I mean you have no common sense whatsoever but...you’re not dumb,” I said slowly, shaking my head.
She looked at me, her eyes widening.
“You really think so?” She said hopefully.
“Pearl you speak several languages, you’re like a calculator...and you can read, many people thought you couldn’t you know,” I told her.
She looked at me before her face split into a smile, hugging me tightly.
“And many people said that you could never be nice,” She beamed at me.
It wasn’t until later on that I discovered just how good a friend Pearl had been to me all those years. She may have been ridiculously thick at times, she may have been a hypochondriac and mental but she’d stuck up for me a countless amount of times and never said a bad word against me. I’d never known though, perhaps if I had a might have been a teeny bit nicer.
“Iris,” a sudden voice said from my right side.
I looked round, raising an eyebrow when I saw Ali and a few of the other girls.
“What do you want?”I said rudely.
“Can we sit here?” Ali said.
This in itself was odd. When Ace was around I tended to sit with him (not always) and when I was with the other girls I sat at the opposite end to the table to Mary etc. Ali had betrayed me, not that it was surprising or anything.
“Shouldn’t you be with Mary?” I said coldly.
Suddenly Ali just burst out crying.
“What’s wrong?” Pearl asked.
“I...M...M...Mary...slept with...with Tom!” She sobbed.
I stopped, simply looking at her.
“She what?” I said slowly.
“She slept with my boyfriend!” She cried while June rubbed her back comfortingly.
I got to my feet, utterly furious.
Of course this had nothing to do with Ali but I was however preoccupied with the fact that she had cheated on Sirius.
No one cheated on Sirius as far as I was concerned.
“That low down bitch!” I cried before striding out the hall.
I was barely out of the hall when I spotted her, incidentally with Sirius and Ace who seemed about reading to start a fight...again. That however failed to bother me.
“You bitch!” I yelled, moving up the stairs.
They all turned to look at me, Mary opening her mouth to speak when I did something very rare.
I punched her. Hard.
...and god it hurt too. I don’t punch people, I hex them, I was therefore out of the practise which meant my poor gorgeous hand was hurt in the process...on the plus side I think it hurt her more.
She let out a kind of half shriek as she fell on her arse, clutching her jaw.
“Iris!” Sirius cried.
“You deserve so much more than that,” I growled at her, trying to stop myself cradling what felt an awful lot like a broken finger. Owww.
“If you had any idea what was good for her you’d fucking drop her,” I told Sirius as calmly as I could before turning and walking off, ignoring the eyes that followed me.
“Iris wait,” Ace cried.
I hadn’t even noticed he was following me until I was near the courtyard, which was a while after, more preoccupied with the whole ‘all consuming rage’ thing.
“What?” I snapped coming to a stop.
“I can promise you that I did not shag her,” He said.
I looked at him for a moment, a crease appearing between my eyebrows.
“You shagged her?” I said.
“...no, see that’s my point I didn’t,” He said.
“...YOU FUCKING SHAGGED HER?!” I cried.
“Wh...I just...I just said I fucking didn’t!” He retorted.
“I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’D FUCKING DO THAT TO ME!” I yelled.
“Ah for Christ's sake!” He cried throwing his hands in the air.
“I didn’t!” He reiterated.
“Then why the hell would you bring it up?!” I demanded.
“...so this...this isn’t about me?” He said.
“It is if you slept with her,” I growled.
He looked hugely relieved, leaning against the cloister wall and feeling around in his robe pocket, producing his beloved cigarettes moments later.
“Bloody hell,” He breathed, leaning his head back, the kind of relief on his face that looked like it belonged on the face of a bloke saved from the death penalty.
“Well...what’d you punch Mary for then?” He said, lighting the cigarette, taking a deep drag as if to clear his shattered nerves.
Nice to know he was that afraid of what would happen if he ever cheated on me.
“She...Ace what are you talking about? You can’t just randomly start apologizing about supposedly shagging...or not shagging someone and then not fucking explain,” I said.
He looked at me before letting out an irritable sigh and sitting down.
“Well she fucking came onto me didn’t she? But you’re all...fucked up and stuff and then if I’d fucked her then...” He mumbled not really making much sense at all.
“What? Start again,” I said sitting down beside him.
“You stopped me getting laid ok! You have no idea how good Mary is and you fucked it up!” He snapped angrily.
...really wasn’t helping to clear my confusion.
“...Why?” I said.
“Well I don’t know do I?!” He snapped seeming to grow angrier by the second.
I raised an eyebrow before I grinned at him.
“You luuuurve me and you didn’t want to cheat on me because you luuuuuuuuuuuurve me,” I sang.
“Awww that’s so sweet,” I cooed.
I think was quite enough to shatter his nerves completely.
“YOU KNOW WHAT IRIS! FUCK YOU!” He snapped causing me to actually jump before he got up, throwing down the half finished cigarette and stalking off.
Right so let’s see now; Ace was pissed off at me because I’d somehow managed to stop him from ‘doing the dirty’ with Mary, Sirius was mad at me for going out with Ace and probably now for punching his girlfriend, I hadn’t talked to Hemera in what seemed like ages, several of the professors actually point blank refused to teach me and several people would have quite happily seen me dead.
My list of friends grew ever longer by the day. Not.
Such was the plight of my social life that I actually went to every single class that day. Oh on the plus side I’d apparently broken Mary’s jaw.
One must always look on the bright side and there it was. A broken jaw.
By lunchtime however my elation had worn out I...I kind of missed Ace...and Hemera of course...and Sirius...great.
“Ace?” I said softly, catching up with him in the corridor.
He turned slightly, scowling when he saw me.
“What do you want?” he said.
“I’m sorry for teasing you,” I said gently.
See I can be nice.
He just looked at me for a moment.
“You know it’s not fault you’re incapable of following things through,” I snapped.
He looked at me before rolling his eyes.
“You’re spose to follow through when you give someone an apology,” He pointed out.
“Ah well,” I said.
He looked at me before rolling his eyes again, chuckling slightly as he pulled me beneath his arm.
“You’re a pain in the arse, you know that right?” He said.
“No you’re just crabby, oh and next time you decide you’re going to shout at me...yeah don’t bother, I do the shouting in this relationship, you scowl and look moody,” I said.
“No, I’ll do what I want,” He said.
“Yeah right,” I said.
“Shut up,” He said.
“Thank you for not cheating on me Ace,” I said smiling slightly, my fingers moving through his as his hand hung against my shoulder after a while of just walking.
He grunted in reply.
“Because then I would have had to dismember you and I don’t like blood,” I continued.
His lips quirked ever so slightly.
I chuckled ever so slightly.
Ah...well at least I had one sort of friend back...gosh that was easy...I would apologize to Sirius...but it was his fault. The same applied to Hemera, admittedly she had tried apologizing but I was still too mad.
“Well anyway, I’m going to DADA...I suggest you come to,” I said lightly.
“No way, s’only pretty boy,” He said.
“Well it would depend on if you consider Moody a ‘pretty boy’,” I said.
“He’s only on Fridays,” Ace said.
“Fine, don’t believe me,” I shrugged.
Obviously I knew that Moody was giving the class a ‘little surprise’. I’d seen it.
He eyed me for a moment, probably trying to work out his chances of escaping Moody when he found him, yes: not if. When.
He gave a callous shrug.
“Fine,” He said.
In other words he was too afraid to find out the consequences.
“You know you still didn’t tell me why you punched Mary...I have to say it was a good one but you’re supposed to keep your thumb tucked in,” He told me matter of factly.
“Apparently she slept with Tom,” I said.
“...and?” He said.
“And so she cheated on Sirius!” I snapped.
He rolled his eyes.
“So you get pissed off when she’s shagging him, then pissed off when they’re not?” He said.
“Yes!” I said.
He shook his head.
We arrived at the classroom, moving in and to the back as usual. I completely ignored Sirius and the rest of them as I passed, refusing to so much as glance at them.
I’d only just sat down when suddenly Ali and the girls appeared, sitting around me, beginning to talk as if nothing had happened.
“Ali,” a voice said after a while to our other side.
We all looked around to see Tom.
Maybe he wasn’t so dim after all. You see I’m pretty sure he was well aware that Ali happened to have liked him quite a bit. He also knew that it was unlikely that he’d get a date from the girls from our circle anytime soon if he let this lie and most guys didwant us, we were as much a status symbol as it was for us to have a good player.
She simply looked away while June glared at him.
June and Ali were best friends just like Elsa and Mary were hence the reason Elsa and few others were still up in the hospital wing with her.
I’d probably get in trouble for that at some point but at the moment I’d gotten away unscathed.
“Ali doesn’t want to speak to you at the moment,” June told him coldly.
“Fuck off,” He snapped at her.
All of sudden Ali started crying.
“This mate, is why you don’t get caught,” Ace smirked at him quietly.
I rolled my eyes at him.
“Prick,” I breathed.
“Look...” I began getting to my feet.
“IRIS TEAR!” came a yell from the front of the class.
I frowned, turning to Moody...looking furious...this was bad.
“...yes?” I said slowly.
“Outside. Now,” He growled, drawing out each syllable.
I just looked at him for a moment before doing as he said.
I couldn’t be in that much trouble, I’d only punched her for god’s sake.
“Aimes. Black, out,” He ordered.
This simply confused me further.
The entire room was silent as both of them followed.
Moody slammed the door shut behind us, hobbling to an empty classroom next door and ordering us in.
“...what exactly is...?” I started shortly.
“WHICH ONE?!” He cried.
I frowned at him.
“Pardon?” I said.
“WHICH ONE BLOODY DID IT?!” He demanded.
We all stared at him in confusion.
“I WALK INTO THE STAFF ROOM THIS MORNING AND THE FIRST THING I HEAR IS THAT YOU,” He said poking a finger at me. “ARE BLOODY PREGNANT!”
Oh, well that made more sense.
I rolled my eyes.
“You know if the staff of Hogwarts really have lives so boring that they...” I started.
“THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR YOUR CHEEK IRIS! THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS MATTER!” He roared.
I couldn’t help but snort slightly. Both Sirius and Ace however weren’t looking so relaxed, probably terrified that Moody would wrongly accuse them and deliver...certain punishments for supposedly getting me pregnant.
“I...” I started.
“WHICH ONE OF YOU DID IT?!” Moody yelled, his wand, drawn, swivelling it between the two boys.
“Moody you do realise you’re not supposed to hex students don’t you? I’m not pregnant,” I said flatly.
I think he was too busy going ballistic to notice me.
“HOW DARE YOU TOUCH HER!” He continued to yell.
You know anyone would think he was my dad or something.
“I’M NOT PREGNANT!” I yelled over him.
He stopped, breathing hard, having now backed both Ace and Sirius against the wall.
“It’s just a rumour, promise. If you really feel the need I’ll go up to the hospital wing and prove it,” I said simply.
“YOU SHOULDN’T BE NEEDING TO PROVE IT TO ANYONE! YOU SHOULD BE FOCUSING ON YOUR STUDIES! YOU’RE TOO YOUNG TO BE INVOLVED WITH BOYS!” He yelled.
I raised an eyebrow.
“I’m 17,” I reminded him.
“Do you have any N.E.W.Ts?” He said.
I rolled my eyes.
“I assure you, I am perfectly capable of looking after myself,” I said.
“As of now you will be in detention...” He started.
“You can’t put me in detention for not being pregnant!” I cried.
“YOU’RE TOO YOUNG TO BE HAVING SEX!” He cried.
I closed my eyes.
That was never a word I was never meant to hear from Moody. I’m surprised he even knew what it was, it seemed rather unlikely that he’d had much action in his time.
“Oh god,” I whimpered massaging my temples.
You know we’d had the ‘you’re too young for boys’ talk in my first year when I’d gotten my first boyfriend, we hadn’t gone into much detail but he’d told me to ‘hex any boy who got too close’, he’d even given me a few handy spells too.
I was however now 17 and knew a great many spells to cause sufficient amounts of pain to any bloke who thought they might like a try.
I’d never thought, in all my days, that Moody would do anything as awful as try to talk to me about anything in that area.
I’d never been given ‘the talk’ and found out about it from a few visions where...well... let’s just say I was given a few examples...not to mention the sort of things you heard from other kids who deliver all those horrifying ‘truths’. My knowledge was therefore patchy but I guess the basics were there.
This didn’t mean that I wished to hear about it.
“I’m not...doing anything, with anyone,” I said.
He glared at me.
“It’s true! Don’t you think I have more important things to do?” I said.
“She wears plain white cotton underwear, it says a...” Ace started before stopping, glancing at Moody warily.
Funnily enough it wasn’t Moody who spoke first.
“What?” Sirius said.
“Care to explain?” Moody growled.
“He was teaching me how to swim,” I said flatly.
“In your underwear?” Sirius scoffed disbelievingly.
“Yes. In my fucking underwear, now if you think that you’re going to start something out of this then think again,” I hissed at him.
“He comes up with some comment about your knickers and you tell me it’s because you went for a swim?” He said sceptically starting to look severely peeved off.
“Yes because it’s the truth. Funnily enough I can keep my knickers on, not all of us are as promiscuous as your fucking slag of a girlfriend!” I retorted heatedly.
“Don’t talk about my girlfriend like that!” He snapped.
“She sleeps with some other guy on the quidditch team and yet somehow I don’t see you looking particularly upset about that,” I snapped.
Oh now he looks furious. Pfft.
“That’s because he made it up!” He snapped.
I let out a derisive laugh.
“Oh sure! Haven’t you failed to notice that Mary seems incapable of saying no? Or is there another reason, aside from your libido, that you keep some bitchy two faced, muggle hating slag around?” I retorted.
“HE DIDN’T SLEEP WITH HER! HE SLEPT WITH JUNE!” He yelled.
I looked at him.
“You’re seriously delusional,” I said.
“He said Mary because June’s Ali’s best friend and well...thought more people would believe him if he said Mary,” Sirius argued.
“Oh sure and she told you that did she?” I snapped.
“No Remus did because he fucking told him? Ok?!” He snapped.
...I was so checking this with Remus.
“Plus EVERYONE knows you’ve been shagging Ace anyway!” Sirius snapped furiously.
“I AM NOT SLEEPING WITH ANYONE!” I snapped.
“Oh hence the reason you spend so much time mysteriously disappearing off?!” He retorted.
I looked at him in disbelief. Both Moody and Ace were now just watching in bewilderment.
“Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t realise there were rules about spending time with my boyfriend now,” I responded.
“Wait, wait, wait. Boyfriend?” Moody said.
“Yes Moody, I have boyfriend! I’ve had many boyfriends and I assure you I do know how to say no!” I snapped over my shoulder at him.
“You know what even if I was shagging the crap out of Ace it wouldn’t be any of your business AND you’d be an utter hypocrite for commenting on it,” I retorted.
“You don’t expect people to believe...” He started.
“Yes!” I cried.
“Oh yeah right!” He snapped before turning and stalking out of the classroom.
“Why was I not told about this boyfriend?!” Moody demanded into the ensuing silence.
