Bad Dreams and Big Questions

I was running. Why? I couldn’t tell you. I was just running, and running, and running through a field of tall grass. It was a cloudy night, and pitch black, but I held my illuminated wand out before me so I could clearly see where I was going. Not that I actually knew where I was going. All I did know was that I needed to keep running, but my lack of regular exercise made this extensive running quite difficult. My legs felt like lead and my breathing was shallow and erratic. But still, I kept running. Tears soon began rolling down my cheeks from the feeling of sheer exhaustion and a rapidly growing sense of terror. I tried to keep running but my legs just wouldn’t listen to my brain anymore. My knees buckled beneath me and I tripped over my own feet, sending me flying and I slammed against the cold, hard ground. My face scraped across the dirt as my weary arms failed to effectively break my fall. But I had no time to feel the pain, I had to keep running. I desperately searched for my wand, nearly completely blind in the darkness, but it was useless. There was no time! I tried to scramble to my feet, but the first ounce of pressure I put my left foot sent an agonizing shot of pain up my leg and brought me crashing back down to the ground. ‘Keep going! You have to keep going!’ a voice screamed in my head and I began crawling along through the darkness on my raw and bloody hands and knees.

For the first time I could hear rustling behind me and my stomach dropped, my heart racing in alarm.
‘Don’t let them catch you!’ the voice cried. ‘They will kill you!’ I kept crawling as fast as I could, but the rustling continued to grow louder, and voices began shouting out. ‘They can see you!’ the voice in my head cried. ‘Stop! Hide!’ I dropped down on the spot, hardly daring to breath, then started slithering behind a large boulder, trying not to make a sound or any visible movement. I curled up behind the rock, praying not to be found. After what seemed like ages the voices slowly began to fade away and I heard a series of loud cracks that signified disapperation. I nearly wept in relief, but I stayed where I was. I was still not safe. I would not be safe until I was back in James’ arms and I knew he was alright. Tears rolled down my cheeks again as I thought of him.

“Where are you James?” I whispered aloud, burying my face in my hands.

“He’s dead,” a cold, high voice answered me and I gasped, whipping my head around and my eyes found the chalk-white, snake-like face of Lord Voldemort. I was paralyzed with fear, but his words could not be ignored.

“You’re lying!” I screamed, refusing to believe that James, my strong, brave, loyal, funny, happy, loving, brilliant James, was gone.

“Oh, don’t fret, Mudblood,” Voldemort smirked down at me, “you’ll be joining him shortly.” And with a blinding flash of green I ceased thinking, I ceased feeling. I sunk into the blackness.

I shot up like a rocket, the blankets tangled among my limbs. I was drenched in sweat and panting heavily. I looked around and although it was still dark I was relieved to recognize my bedroom walls surrounding me.

“Just a dream,” I breathed to myself, “just an awful, awful dream.” I thought back over the nightmare that had just plagued me. I remembered running, falling, hiding, Voldemort, James- “James!” I gasped, immediately turning and groping through the darkness for him. My stomach dropped when I found his side of the bed empty. Tears instantly formed in my eyes and I began to panic. Where was he? Was he okay? Was he alive? I struggled to disentangle myself from the blankets then leapt out of bed in alarm. I caught a glimpse of the clock out of the corner of my eye on my way to the door. Five fifteen. My hand was on the doorknob when it occurred to me. Jogging, James goes jogging every morning. He was out on a run.

I heaved an enormous sigh of relief but I couldn’t completely get the knot out of my stomach. I had to see him. I had to know he was okay. Rushing back across the room, I headed for the bureau and pulled out a pair of shorts, a tank top, and socks. Dressing quickly, I pulled on my socks as I hopped over to the closet and dug out my trainers and a light jacket. Within a few minutes I was out the front door and on a mission to find him. I had to find him.

I decided to go left on the sidewalk, but I had no idea what James’ regular route was. I began jogging and I was brought back to my dream, running, and running, and running. My throat constricted, tears threatened to well up again, and I had to stop and take a few deep breaths before I could continue. I had been running for at least fifteen minutes before I came across another living soul. A young woman in a bright pink tracksuit and matching sweatbands was jogging towards me, her blonde ponytail bobbing up and down. I avoided eye contact as she grew nearer and was slightly startled when I heard her let out a gasp.

“Lily?” she cried. “Lily Potter?!”

“I- what?” I spluttered, looking at her in confusion.

“It is you!” she exclaimed, leaping forward and pulling me into a hug. I patted the woman’s back awkwardly before pulling away to get a better look at her face, and immediately recognized her.

“Oh, Susan! Hi!” I exclaimed in return, equally surprised to see my former (well now current again) neighbour there.

“You’re back!” she cried in excitement. “I mean, that elderly man had said that you and your husband were on an extended business trip but I had no idea it would be that long. I was starting to think that you were never coming back!”

“Oh, er-” I muttered, having no idea what Susan was talking about. “Elderly man?”

“Yes, yes, the man that you rent your house from. You know, long, gray hair and beard, glasses, bright blue eyes,” she elaborated and it dawned on me that she was talking about Dumbledore.

“Oh, right of course,” I nodded, though I still had no idea what story Dumbledore had told her to explain our spontaneous disappearance.

“So, tell me everything!” she exclaimed, looping her arm through my and we continued along the sidewalk at a leisurely pace.

“Oh, um-” I scrambled, having no clue what I was supposed to say.

“I mean, Spain! It must have been amazing!” Susan gushed and I raised my eyebrows slightly. Spain?

“Yeah,” I nodded, desperately trying to remember anything I knew about Spain, “it’s really beautiful there, but very hot. It’s nice to be back, I don’t think I could handle a summer there.”

“So was the business trip a success?” she pressed eagerly. “You know, I never knew James was a business man, where exactly does he work?”

“Oh, well, actually, he’s not a business man,” I said and she looked at me in confusion. “He’s a um, law enforcement agent. We went to Spain for a er, special case. Very secret, I’m not really supposed to talk about it,” I explained, thinking rapidly to come up with something and Susan looked at me with wide eyes. “That’s why we didn’t tell anyone we were leaving, we couldn’t.” Susan nodded, looking extremely impressed.

“Wow,” she breathed and was uncharacteristically silent for a few seconds before she turned back to me. “So what about you? What do you do?”

“I’m a doctor,” I said quickly, and she looked impressed again.

“But you’re so young! I mean your, what, twenty two? How did you finish school so early?” she asked sounding awestruck and I blushed. Right, let’s go with twenty two.

“I uh, skipped a few grades,” I said, feeling horrible about lying so much to the poor woman, who obviously thought I was some kind of super genius married to a secret agent.

“Wow Lily,” she sighed appreciatively I felt so bad that I almost told her that I was a big fat liar, but was interrupted when someone called out my name.

“Lily?” James voice came from behind Susan and I whipped around. Seeing Susan had temporarily distracted me from my gut-wrenching worry for him, but the second I heard his voice I was instantly reminded of it. But there he was, safe and sound, jogging towards us in just a pair of shorts and trainers. “Since when do you jog?” he asked as he got closer, smiling down at me in amusement and confusion and I had to fight back tears of relief. The tears had caused a lump to form in my throat so all I could was shrug in response. His smile faltered at this but I shook my head slightly and flicked my eyes towards Susan so he wouldn’t say anything in front of her. He eyed me critically for a second before turning to her.

“Susan, how are you?” he asked and I couldn’t help but notice that she had to tear her eyes away from my boyfriend’s bare chest in order to answer him. Whatever, I was used to this by now.

“Oh, I’m fine,” she said quietly, staring at her feet. “I should really be going now. Richard and Jack will probably be waking up soon, I promised Jack pancakes for breakfast this morning,” she explained, smiling back towards her house. It was only then that I realized that she had towed me all the way back so that we were standing on the sidewalk in front of our houses.

“Alright, we’ll see you around then I guess,” James said with a friendly smile and nod.

“Oh, of course,” Susan nodded fervently, “I’m so glad that you two are back. We’ll have to get together for dinner sometime soon.”

“Sure, that sounds great,” I nodded and she smiled again before turning and jogging up the small walkway and disappeared into the house. James looked after her for a few seconds before turning back to me.

“So, care to explain your sudden interest in early morning running?” he asked, taking my hand and we both turned to cross the street. I grimaced and looked down at my feet.

“I was worried about you,” I mumbled as we walked up the porch steps and into the house.

“Worried? About little ‘ole me?” he asked, closing the door behind us, and though I couldn’t see his face I could tell his was smirking.

“Yes, about little ‘ole you,” I nodded, with a sad smile.

‘Why would you be worried about me?” he asked, sounding a little more serious now. I didn’t answer right away and after a few seconds later I felt James slip a hand underneath my chin and gently tipped my head up so that I had to look him in the eye. “Tell me what’s wrong, Flower.”

“I had a nightmare,” I sighed, unable to resist those eyes, and he damn well knew it. The hazel orbs search mine for a moment before he suddenly scooped me up without another word. “What are you doing?” I gasped as he carried me bridal style down the hall and into our bedroom. He didn’t respond, he just gently deposited me onto the bed, and then hopped on next to me. He put his arm around me and pulled me closer so that I was snuggled up against his chest, which was shiny with sweat. Not that I minded. At all.

“What was your nightmare about?” he asked once we had gotten comfortable and I sighed again.

“Well, I was running,” I said slowly and he nodded. “I ran so long that I couldn’t run any longer. I fell and dropped my wand but didn’t have time to find it in the dark, so I started crawling, because if I stopped then they would catch me.”

“Who would catch you?” he asked gently.

“The death eaters,” I shivered and I felt his arm curl tighter around me.

“What happened next?” he pressed lightly.

“I tried to hide because I could hear them get closer,” I recollected, my chest tightening slightly, “but I started thinking about you because I didn’t know where you were or if you okay and they must have heard me crying because all of a sudden Voldemort was there, standing over me. He told me that you were- you were-” I choked, unable to speak the words. I shook my head and cleared my throat before continuing. “Then he killed me.” James stared down at me for a moment before abruptly seizing me up kissing me passionately. It shocked me at first. Most of the time our kisses were gentle and sweet, but this was different, it was as if our kisses were oxygen to James and he would die without them. I quickly got over the shock and suddenly it felt as if there was a fire burning inside me and the only way to extinguish it was to press myself closer to him. I was still trying to quench the flames when James suddenly tore himself away. We were both breathing raggedly, our lips were red and swollen, my shirt had ridden up, and I had somehow ended up on top of James. Normally I would have felt embarrassed, but for whatever reason I suddenly didn’t care, I just wanted to be kissing him again. I leaned back in to start snogging again but James shifted so suddenly that I toppled off of him and back onto the bed.

“What was that for?” I whined indignantly, making to climb back onto his lap but he jumped out of the bed like it was on fire. I stared at him in utter bewilderment and he looked torn. “What are you doing?” I demanded crossly, sitting up and putting my hands on my hips.

“I-I, what are you doing?” he fired back, now standing as far away from me as possible.

“What do you mean ‘what am I doing’?” I cried, throwing my arm up in exasperation. “You started it!”

“I-You-Gah!” he squawked, now throwing his arms up, then through his messy hair.

“What is with you?” I hissed in frustration, standing up and roughly shoving my shirt back down. He grumbled something unintelligible and I raised my eyebrows at him. “What?”

“Your father,” he reiterated more clearly this time and I was sure that my eyebrows had disappeared into my hair.

Excuse me?” I demanded and James visibly shrunk back before me.

“Your dad,” he mumbled again, staring at his feet, “he made me swear that we wouldn’t... ‘get together’ until we were married.” My jaw dropped and I stared at him in disbelief.

“And you just thought that this was something that you could decide by yourself?” I asked incredulously. “Because I’m pretty sure what we do with our sex life is our decision, not just yours, and certainly not my father’s.”

“But-”James tried but I cut him off.

“You know what? Fine, you don’t want to sleep together then we won’t. Ever. Happy now?” I said huffily before heading for the door, but James darted forward and caught me before I could get very far.

“Lily,” he whined, “don’t be like that.”

“Don’t be like what?” I asked irately. “Angry that you and my father are determining my life changing decisions without me?”

“Look I’m sorry I initiated the... snogging, but I just-” he started, then hesitated, taking my hand before continuing. “The thought of you... de- no longer here-. I just couldn’t handle it.” I raised my eyebrows again. Sure, that was sweet I guess, but he wasn’t off the hook.

“That’s not really the issue here James,” I said and he sighed. “But I’ll have you know, if I really wanted to have sex then there is nothing you or my father could do about it.” I said, stepping closer to him.

“Lily,” James said warning, backing away from me slightly.

“James,” I countered, mirroring his steps forward until he had backed himself up against the closet door. He gulped visibly and I smirked. “Problem?” I asked and he shook his head vigorously. “Good, then I guess you won’t mind if I do this,” I said before taking one final step forward and closing the distance between us. I crushed my lips onto his and laced my fingers through his unruly hair, smirking when I heard him groan loudly. Try as he might to resist, it only took a few seconds before he caved and I felt his hands snake around my waist. I was tempted to pull away and give him a taste of his own medicine but couldn’t do it. I lost touch with everything expect the fire building back up inside of me and the next thing I knew we were back on the bed. Just when I thought the fire couldn’t burn any hotter it was joined by a sudden burst of butterflies when I truly realised what was about to happen. I was nervous, but I wasn’t scared. I loved James and I knew he was the one I wanted to be with.

“Lily, Lil, wait,” James panted, pulling back suddenly. I groaned in frustration but just continued kissing my way down his neck. “Lily,” he said again, more firmly this time and his hands gripped my hips tighter as he pulled up so that we were face to face.

“James, just shut up and let this happen,” I whined, desperately trying to get back to his lips but he put his hand over my mouth and held me at an arms length. “You’re ruing the mood,” I grumbled, my voice muffled by his hand, and the bloody prat smirked. I tried to slap his hand away so that I could yell at him further, but he easily evaded me, laughing. He stared down at me, his eyes full of mirth and undeniable love and my anger immediately melted away. I was about to try to kiss him again but he succeeded in stopping me once more when I heard his next words.

“Marry me,” he said abruptly, his hypnotic eyes boring into mine, and my jaw dropped to the floor.

What?!” I shrieked, looking up at him like he had sprouted a second head.

“Oh, wait,” he said eagerly, jumping out of the bed and rushing over to the bureau. I watched him in disbelief as he pulled open the drawer designated as his underwear drawer and pulled out a small box. He dashed back over to me and crouched down on one knee beside the bed, holding the box out to me. “Lily Marie Evans, will you marry me?” He asked again, but all I could do was gape down at him in shock. My eyes shifted to the box and I felt my jaw drop even further. Inside sat the most beautiful ring I had ever seen. It was simple, but absolutely perfect. It had a square cut emerald in the centre with a diamond on either side, and four smaller diamonds wrapping around each side of the white gold band.

“James,” I gasped, “it’s amazing.” He smiled, took my left hand and tried to slip the ring onto my finger but I ripped it away like he had burned me. “What a minute! Why do you even have a ring?! Are you insane?!” I squawked, but immediately regretted it when I saw the look of severe disappointment and hurt on his face. “I mean- it’s just- what would people think?! We’re only eighteen James! ”

“So?” he said stubbornly. “You’ve always been mature for you’re age. I bet you’re at least thirty mentally.”

“Yes, well then that would make you, what, twelve?” I snapped and he rolled his eyes up at me. “Would get off the bloody floor?!” I hissed crossly, realizing he was still kneeling before me and he stood up and snapped the ring box closed, grumbling.

“So, I guess that’s a no then,” he muttered dejectedly and I groaned.

“James, come on, you know I love you,” I said desperately but he just looked down at me with despondent eyes. “James,” I groaned again, walking on my knees to the edge of the bed and taking his hand, then a thought suddenly occurred to me. “Wait a minute, does this have something to do with your promise to my dad?”

“Well, kind of,” he muttered, avoiding my eyes now and running his free hand through his hair. I was silent for a moment and he chanced a glance up at me, instantly recoiling at the look of fury on my face. “But that’s not the only reason!” he said quickly, reaching out and his hands on my arms, pinning them to my sides, presumably so that I couldn’t get to my wand. “I love you Lily,” he continued, his hazel orbs blazing down at me again. “I’ve only ever loved you. I want to wake up every morning and see your face. I want to have kids with your amazing eyes, your brilliant hair, your adorable freckles, your beautiful brains, and your amazing personality, and if they get stuck with some of my traits too I guess that’ll be okay too. I want to come home everyday and sit together. Just sit. That’s all I need. You’re all I need, Lily. I want to be with you, forever.”

“James,” I moaned again, my resolve wavering. The thought of James not being with me everyday for the rest of my life was a dreadful one, something I never wanted to think about. So how could I say no to something that clearly meant so much to him and also tied us together for eternity, which is all both of us really wanted? He seemed to sense that he was getting to me so he pressed harder.

“Please Lily?” he begged, his hands sliding down my arms to take both of my hands in his and squeezed them tightly. “And it’s not like we have to get married right away. We don’t even have to tell anyone if you don’t want to! Just knowing that it will happen someday is enough for me,” he said eagerly, opening the small box again and pulling out the ring. “Please?” he whispered again, his eyes shining.

“I-” I croaked, my mouth dry as the Sahara. My brain was screaming at me to think logically, but my heart was aching with desire to say yes and to know that I’ll be spending the rest of my life in his arms. ‘You are only eighteen you dolt!’ my head shrieked. ‘Do you want to throw your life away?!’

‘You aren’t throwing your life away!’ my heart countered vehemently. ‘This is James were talking about! You love him! He loves you! That’s all you need! Besides, what is your life without James anyway?’

‘Nothing,’ my brain conceded and tears immediately sprung to my eyes.

“Yes!” I cried, throwing my arms around James’ neck and buried my head in his shoulder. “Yes James, yes!” Suddenly the bed disappeared from underneath me and the room spun wildly around me while James twirled me around and showered me with kisses. He gently placed me on my feet again and slipped the breathtaking ring onto my left ring finger. I stared down at it, my head still spinning. I, Lily Marie Evans, was engaged James Harold Potter. I never knew my lips could stretch as far as they did then, my smile nearly expanding off the edge of my face.

“I love you Lily,” James murmured in my ear, pulling me close once more so that my head was buried in the crook of his neck.

“Oh, really?” I smirked, turning so that I was looking up into his face. “I wasn’t sure.”

“Well, I think I know just how to prove it to you,” his eyes shined mischievously, then he hopped onto the bed beside me and crushed his lips onto mine.
___________________________________________________________

“I love you,” James murmured into the back of my neck and tightened his grip around my bare waist. I smiled and let my eyes linger down to my left hand where the emerald on my ring sparkled in the light. My heart swelled with joy, while my stomach exploded with butterflies. I was so unbelievably happy, but I was still nervous as hell. Of course having James snuggled up against did make things a little better. Unfortunately, that didn’t last as long as I would have liked.

“Prongs! Get your arse out of bed!” Sirius’ voice rang out suddenly and a nanosecond later our bedroom door slammed open to reveal the idiot himself.

“Black!” I screeched, yanking the covers up to my chin and throwing the nearest object at him which happened to be a ceramic vase. Easily dodging my projectile Sirius let out a bark of laughter and a huge smirk spread across his face.

“It’s about bloody time you two!” he snickered and I glared at him while James chucked a book at him and I was happy to see that it smacked his forehead with a satisfying thunk. “Oi!” he cried indignantly, rubbing his head. “I could have lost an eye!”

“Get out or you’ll loose something much more valuable than an eye,” James growled and Sirius grumbled but complied, slamming the door behind him. “Stupid git,” James muttered, glaring after his mate for a moment before turning back to me. “Let’s kick him out,” he said darkly and I couldn’t help but laugh, even if I was cross with Sirius.

“Yeah, sure,” I snorted, gently patting his cheek condescendingly. He smiled goofily and my heart melted. “I love you,” I whispered, rubbing my thumb over his cheek and he covered my small hand with his own.

“Love you more,” he replied, his smile growing wider as we entered our typical routine.

“Impossible,” I replied with a smirk, reciting my usual line.

“We’ll call it a tie then,” we said in unison, chuckling. We sat in a comfortable silence for a few moments after that, but then James broke it with a sigh.

“We should probably get up,” he said, glancing at the clock, “it’s almost ten thirty.” I nodded halfheartedly and reluctantly rolled out from under the covers. I pulled on my dressing gown and turned to find James smirking up at me.

“What?” I flushed in embarrassment and his smirk grew wider.

“You’re beautiful,” he said matter-of-factly and my face turned even redder. I picked some invisible lint off of my robe and tucked a few loose strands of hair behind my ear, avoiding his eyes.

“I’m going to go take a quick shower,” I said, and though I wasn’t looking, I could tell he was still smirking. “Why don’t you go see if you managed to give your boyfriend a concussion?”

“Will do,” James said happily and I rolled my eyes. He didn’t even bother to deny it anymore.

After a speedy shower I changed into a pair of shorts and a ruffled, green tank top, then went out to the kitchen for some breakfast. As I walked down the hallway I could hear James and Sirius whispering fervently, but they stopped abruptly when I appeared in the doorway. I eyed them suspiciously but James was just eating a bowl of cereal and Sirius was watching him with a scowl on his face. I rolled my eyes then went to the counter it picked up the box of cereal that James had left there. Bringing it back over to the table, I popped open the top, grabbed a handful, then plopped down into the chair between the two of them. Sirius continued to glare at James and the tension was getting to me.

“For Merlin’s sake, what’s wrong now?” I insisted, glaring at the both of them

“James is keeping secrets from me!” Sirius yelled, pointing an accusatory finger at my boy- I mean fiancé. Ugh, that was going to take some getting used to.

“Black, if you’re upset because he’s not telling you what I’m like in the sack then don’t expect any sympathy from me,” I said flatly. He finally dropped the scowl and smirked, but shook his head.

“Not that I’m not curious,” he sniggered and I rolled my eyes, “but that’s not what he’s trying to hide.”

“Then what exactly is he hiding, Sirius?” I asked tiredly and the scowl quickly returned.

“Well, if I knew that we wouldn’t be here right now, would we?” he replied huffily.

“No, we wouldn’t be here if you weren’t so goddamn nosey,” James spat and they began bickering back and forth again. I rolled my eyes again; Merlin, those two were like a pair of bratty teenage girls. No, scratch that, I was a teenage girl and I never acted like that. Well, maybe on a rare occasion. I pondered the fact that I had just agreed to marry one of these bratty little girls for a moment, but was quickly shaken out of my thoughts when the first handful of cereal was thrown.

“Hey!” I cried indignantly, putting my hands up to shield myself, but they ignored me. A few more clumps of brightly coloured shapes flew by me before I let out shriek of impatience. “Enough!” I yelled then pulled James’ bowl away from him. However, when I tried to snatch the box away from Sirius he suddenly grabbed my left wrist with a gasp.

“You gave her this?” he asked in disbelief, shaking my hand fiercely and pointing at the ring on my finger. “I thought you just bought it to mess with us!”

“You thought I paid three thousand galleons for a ring just to pull a prank on you?” James asked with his eyebrows raised and Sirius shrugged while my jaw dropped.

“This ring was three thousand galleons?!” I cried, gaping down at the masterpiece sitting on my finger but the boys ignored me again.

“So you’re saying this is an actual engagement ring?” Sirius asked, still waving my hand around wildly. “As in you two are engaged?!”

“You mean you didn’t tell him?” I gasped at James and he looked at me with wide eyes.

“I thought you didn’t want anyone to know!” he replied, sounding incredulous and confused,

“Well Sirius doesn’t count!” I exclaimed as if it was the most obvious thing in the world and James moved his mouth wordlessly so I quickly turned to Sirius who looked deeply hurt and offended. “I’m sorry Sirius, you’re right James shouldn’t have kept this from you.”

“Me?!” James cried indignantly. “The only reason I didn’t was because I didn’t want to upset you!” he told me before turning to Sirius as well. “Believe me Mate, it was killing me to keep something this big from you!” Sirius looked back and forth between us for a few seconds before a wide smile spread across his face.

“Alright, I’ll forgive you,” he said happily, “on one condition.”

“Name it,” James said quickly and I nodded.

“I get to be best man,” he said, and I could’ve sworn I saw tears in his eyes before he leapt forward and pulled James into a brotherly hug.

“Of course you’ll be my best man!” James laughed, pounding Sirius on the back before pulling back. Sirius then turned to me and hugged me tightly and I felt a burst of happiness rise up inside me. Sure I was still nervous about what other people would think, but that fact that Sirius had given us his blessing made me feel a thousand times better. So who cares what other people thought? I was surrounded by people that loved and cared about me, engaged to the love of my life, and happy. That was all that mattered.

A/N:I'm proud to say that this is my quickest update in a very long time, and the length isn't too shabby either! Hope everyone enjoys it! Please, please, please review!
