“See you laughed so much you hurt yourself!” Chloe didn’t want to tell him the real reason for the excruciating pain so she played it off with a smile pretending the pain was gone and stood up. She looked around to see that they where in an alley out of sight. There were leaves spread around so Chloe thought that it was turning to autumn.
“Silly me.” Chloe looked Draco in the eye. She didn’t want to seem suspicious so she asked. “Malfoy what’s your first name?”
“Look this isn’t the time or place to play your memory game. We need to find some place save.” Draco felt bad that it was only him that needed to hide. Chloe wasn’t apart of this. She had no part in the war. Then it hit him.
“Chloe!” Draco said almost smiling “You can walk out there!”
“So you can find some place for us to stay, you git!”
“Okay okay calm down I see were your going with this. Lucky for you I have money on me.”
Draco hadn’t really meant a hotel but Chloe was already gone before he could explain himself.
Then he wondered where on earth had she gotten money? He realized that he needed some answers from the girl he still only new by name. Chloe came back with a big room at this small family owned hotel and explained that it would have been strange if she had gotten two rooms.
“I think now’s a good time for you to sneak in here’s a key. I’ll head that way a little later.”
Draco thought that plan smart and left the dark alley into the rainy streets that were usually full of witches and wizards but instead were empty. This town had been one of many that Voldemort had made sure to terrorize and it seemed that not all of its residents stayed. He entered the small hotel with its cozy feel unnoticed and head up some stairs wondering exactly which room was theirs. Chloe hadn’t specified so Draco looked at the unmarked key and sighed he crept through the hallways very silently trying to fit his key in the key hole without being noticed. He cursed Chloe for forgetting to tell him something very important like the room number. Luckily there were only three floors of rooms with about five rooms on each floor. He got to the top floor and was feeling fairly confident that he wouldn’t be seen when the door to the room he was about to try opened and someone very familiar stepped out.
“Draco. It can’t be!” Narcissa said as she hugged her boy.
Meanwhile Chloe was sitting in a small café drinking some tea hoping that her appearance wouldn’t scare away other customers. She was flipping through newspaper after newspaper reading everything on the war she could find and without anyone in the café noticing it she shed three tears.
One for what she didn’t do.
The second for the pain she had caused everyone.
And the third she shed because she finally understood what Dumbledore had been trying to tell her.
Chloe then stood up and headed towards the hotel.
“Mother what are you doing here?” Draco asked.
“Why look at you you’re a mess!” Narcissa replied trying to wipe the dirt of his face.
Draco and Narcissa’s conversation continued with silent tears not shed and questions unanswered. They were both too relieved to see each other to even care about getting answers.
Draco was about to tell his mother about Chloe and how she had saved him when Narcissa whispered.
“Don’t look now Draco but there is a strange girl staring at us.”
Draco turned to see Chloe staring at him and his mom with surprise.
“No mom that’s Chloe she sort of saved me.” Draco’s mom looked at her usually stubborn son and was surprised at his open acknowledgement of this girls help.
Chloe wasn’t quite to sure what to do, but she did remember her manners and walked up to Narcissa and politely said “It’s a pleasure Mrs. Malfoy. I am Chloe.”
“Don’t you have a last name? “
Chloe paused. “It’s Gryndor.”
Narcissa then froze. “Did you say Gryndor?”
“Yes.” Chloe replied looking straight into Narcissa’s eyes, expecting the world to fall apart any moment.
“Draco you go take a shower in your room and I will let your friend here use mine.” And before Draco could blink Narcissa had shoved Chloe in her room and locked the door.
“I know who you are,” Narcissa stated as Chloe re-emerged from the bathroom. “Or should I say I don’t, because frankly I am very distraught by the sight of a girl who has been dead for over twenty odd years.”
“How’d you figure it out?” Chloe asked.
“My sister Bellatrix was very close with the Dark Lord you see, and she would always tell me a story about a stupid girl with the last name Gryndor. She would spit the floor when she uttered your name and said how untasteful for someone with a last name so close to Gryffindor be any where near the Dark Lord. She told me the story how this Gryndor girl became the first blood traitor and got her whole bloody family killed. Leaving not one Gryndor left. Now tell me how a Gryndor could be standing in this room then, because me and my son are in enough trouble as it is and I have a feeling your going to be more trouble then help.”
Chloe looked at the women in front of her and spilled her secrets. The ones she had been keeping since she awoke in that warm pond of water. Her side bleeding and her heart torn in two.
“You’ll have to tell Draco,” Narcissa replied through her tear filled eyes. She got up and hugged the girl and whispered into her ear. “But I’m afraid he won’t take it the same way I have.”
“I know.” Chloe replied giving into the warm hug. “I’ll do it tonight. He deserves to know, everyone deserves to know.”
“You shouldn’t blame yourself.” Narcissa replied as Chloe left.
Draco was sitting in the two bed bedroom and was flipping through a newspaper when Chloe entered. She was wearing some old clothes of his mothers but you couldn’t tell. Her long red hair hung loosely around her face and she wore a long sleeved dress the shade of green that you might find in the ocean.
“How’s my mother?” Draco asked.
“She’s fine. She knows the hotel owners and they have been letting her stay her.” Chloe replied looking at Draco. He looked much better then he had in the woods. His hair wasn’t messy anymore and lay perfectly on his head.
Draco having never heard Chloe call him by his first name felt a shock of electricity throughout his entire body and an ache in his lonely heart. He realized that his mother would have called him by his first name when talking to Chloe and didn’t think anything of her knowing his first name.
“Yes.” Was all he could manage to say.
“Would you like to take a walk with me please?” she asked.
Walking through the empty streets Draco directed Chloe to a small restaurant where they both sat down and talked.
“Draco I have some things I have to tell you.”
“I was thinking the same thing. You obviously know my past and I think it’s about time I know yours.”
“I agree, but I have to tell you it’s not pretty.”
Draco thought about his own past and snorted. “I can handle it.”
“Well you have to understand that when I was born there wasn’t a Dark Lord named Voldemort, there was only a boy a little older then me named Tom Riddle. The wizard world was at peace and children’s only worries were over what house they would be placed in at Hogwarts. I was placed in Gryffindor and for the first couple of years I lived a normal life. It wasn’t until my fifth year that I like everyone else at Hogwarts was put under Tom Riddles charm. I thought myself special, because he was interested in my family’s knowledge in Gaelic magic. I was naïve, and let him use me to get what he wanted and when he found out that the Gaelic magic couldn’t be used for his plans he gave me a choice and I made the biggest regret I will ever have and became the first ever Death Eater.” Draco was stunned. “I was well into my last year at Hogwarts and Tom had already left. He had accumulated more Death Eaters by then and was always out doing something. I finally realized what I was becoming when Tom gave me an unspeakable task: to kill my family in order to show my devotion to him. I couldn’t do it and that’s when they all came to my house over the holidays and killed everyone in the house. I could have stopped them if I had just killed Tom. I knew the curse that would end him and I had the opportunity but I couldn’t do it.” Draco was overcome with emotion. Chloe in some weird way was like him. She had made wrong choices and in that moment Draco did a very childish thing. He blamed all his misfortunes on Chloe in that instant. He did it because he didn’t want to blame himself. He never wanted to blame himself. What was left of his pride, a pride full of fear and hate would not allow him to admit that it was his choices too, not just Chloe’s.
“It’s all my fault that everyone is dead and that this war even happened. I’m sorry.” Draco couldn’t hear her anymore and was already apparating away. Out of Chloe’s desperation she jumped across the table and clung on to Draco. They apparatted in front of the hotel with the rain pouring still.
“Let go of me.” Draco yelled at Chloe who was still clinging on to him like a child. He was about to throw her off of him when suddenly she went limp and fell to the ground. Draco saw blood stream from Chloe’s side. It mixed with the rain and washed down the gutter.
Narcissa was worried. Not only where she and her son running from the ministry but now she had a supposedly dead witch that was put in a magic coma on her hands too.
Their was a loud bang of someone coming up the third level stairs and Narcissa opened her door to see Draco his face awash with fear and worry, carrying Chloe in his blood covered arms.
“You bloody idiot!” Narcissa wasn’t much of a yeller and that scared Draco even more then her insult.
Draco took Chloe and laid her down on the bed as Narcissa started undressing her.
“Draco go get some hot towels and my wand.”
Draco went and collected the items needed and came back to find Chloe in jeans and a tank top that was pulled up so he could see the long scar running down the side of her right stomach. Blood was flowing freely from the deep cut and Narcissa grabbed her wand and recited some healing spells to stop the blood, but the cut didn’t look any better to Draco.
“I never thought you that much of a fool Draco. You didn’t even listen to her whole story now did you?” Narcissa asked making Draco feel like a childish idiot who had left right when Chloe had needed him.
Draco looked over Chloe and her unconscious body. She had bruises on her shoulders that reminded him of the dream he had long ago, realizing that it wasn’t a dream at all.
He looked over her arms seeing more scars and bruises that looked less then a month old. Then Draco froze. He walked over to Chloe and lifted her left hand. He had been dumb not to realize that he wasn’t the only one suffering.
She always wore long sleeves he thought to himself as he looked at the death eater’s mark on her left arm. It was a little different looking then the one he bore but it had the same essential skull with a snake coiled around it. That wasn’t the thing that brought Draco to fill with rage at Voldemort. It was the word Blood Traitor carved in Chloe’s arm over the death mark that did. He cursed Voldemort and wished he was alive just so he could kill him himself.
“After the night Chloe’s family was killed Dumbledore put Chloe into a long sleep. It’s an old potion that stops the growth of every cell in your body so when Chloe awoke she still had all the scars from the Dark Lord.” Narcissa stated as Draco looked over Chloe’s arm.
It all made sense now. Why she was still hurt and it was his fault. Injured people aren’t suppose to apparate because it causes the wounds to reopen and Chloe had apparated Draco when they first met and then he apparated her later and then the final apparation when he was running away like a coward and she had desperately clung on to him.
“Draco we can’t go on living like this. With our mistakes. We have to find a way to be free again.” Narcissa said as she started to bandage Chloe’s wounds.
“Don’t you think I’ve tried! I don’t know what to do.” Draco replied wishing for his second chance.
“I do,” Chloe whispered as she slowly tried to sit up. Narcissa grabbed at Chloe trying to steady her. “Draco I know how to get your second chance. It’s what my whole re-” Chloe couldn’t finish because she fell back into a deep sleep, where the infamous Tom Riddle destroyed her dreams and her family.
