Murder at the Hog's Head by Gregory Savage
Chapter 2 : Interrogation #1
Rating: MatureChapter Reviews: 0

Background:   Font color:

Dean Thomas was escorted into the room by a junior auror, and sat down on a chair facing Kingsley and Savage who were both staring at him. The junior auror sat down at a desk at the far corner of the room where there was a quill and ink. There was a wooden table between Dean and the aurors on which Dean rested his hands. “Hello Minister, I didn’t know you personally investigated murders. Or is this is some special case?” said Dean.

“I just want to make sure that the law is upheld,” replied Kingsley as he saw Savage looking annoyed out of the corner of his eye, “so can you tell me at what time you arrived at the Hog’s Head last night, July 1, 1998?”

“Around nine o’clock. I waited for Luna inside there until quarter after when she came in.”

“You were going on a date, I assume?”

“Yeah, with Luna Lovegood. She was late because of whatever snorkle thing she always talks about.”

“So what happened after that?”

“Why are you asking me all these questions? Can’t you just take my memories?”

“No. Unless the wizard is willing to give his memories they can be changed easily to mask certain events. We can’t just pull memories out of your head.”

“Well I’m willing.”

“There is no way of knowing whether a person’s memory is completely true, you could be feeding us bad information.” interrupted Savage, “We would have to trust you unconditionally which we don’t, and with the destruction of Hogwarts and the Ministry, Veritaserum is literally impossible to come by, so we’re doing it the old fashioned way. Also, when people explain the story themselves very many things are significant. In a memory you can see everything and change situations or cloud them, but when a person explains an event, what they emphasize and what they don’t emphasize become incredibly significant. When comparing your story with others, we can see what you left out, intentionally or unintentionally. Does that answer your question?”

“Mostly I think, but...”

“So you were at the bar with Luna,” said Kingsley trying to get back to the interrogation

“Yes, and I bought her a drink.” said Dean.

“That’s all?”

“Well that’s what I did.”

“Who was at the bar?” said Savage annoyedly.

“Oh, well Aberforth was tending the bar, obviously, but I didn’t see anyone at the bar fora while. Luna and I snogged a little before I looked around and saw two people sitting at a table near the back. It was Draco Malfoy and another guy that I didn’t know.”

“Was it the one who was murdered?” asked Savage.

“Yes it was.”

“So what happened after you spotted them?” inquired Kingsley.

“They looked at us every so often, but didn’t pay us too much mind. It annoyed me seeing Malfoy though.”

“Why?” asked Savage.

“Because he deserves to be in Azkaban. He and his family. His mom and dad arealready in there, he should just join them.”

“He was released.” replied Shacklebolt.

“He let in the death eaters that killed Dumbledore! He hangs around with scum still.”

“So you think the man that was murdered is scum?” interjected Savage.

“You said Malfoy hangs around with scum. And you identified that Malfoy was at the Hog’s Head with the deceased, so you think the victim is scum.”

“Hold on a second, you’re twisting my words.”

“The words have been recorded with an auto-writing quill. Plinkett could you read what Mr. Thomas just said?”

The junior auror looked at the parchment at uttered, “Mr. Thomas, ‘Because he deserves to be in Azkaban. He and his family. His mom and Dad are already in there, he should just join them.’ Mr. Savage, ‘He was cleared.’ Mr. Thomas, ‘He let in the death eaters that killed Dumbledore. He hangs around with scum still.’”

“Those were your words.” said Savage as Plinkett sat down.

“So are you going to take me to Azkaban now, or should we wait until you finish congratulating yourself on botching an investigation.” replied Dean.

“I’m not definitively accusing you of murder just yet. Calling somebody scum doesn’t mean you’re going to murder them, It proves nothing, but it implies something.”

“Oh yeah? And just what does it imply?”

“It implies that if you saw who murdered him you would be less likely to turn that person in. One of your friends murders one of Malfoy scumbag friends, you probably think he’s a death eater anyway so who cares? Right?”

“That’s ridiculous.” retorted Dean.

“It’s not. You fought death eaters two months prior to last night at Hogwarts.” Savage struck back with, “Probably killed a few, am I right?”

“I’m proud to have fought against the death eaters and am proud to have helped take down Voldemort.” said Dean raising his voice

“That’s fine Mr. Thomas, but the fact still remains that you have a very biased leaning against the victim right off the bat. Just because of his association with Mr. Malfoy.”

“That’s enough Savage,” said Kingsley, “let’s continue with the story.”

“Well after a while, a group of people showed up to the bar.” said Dean still upset over the verbal attack by Savage, “It was Harry, Hagrid, and four others that I didn’t recognize. I think two of them were Weasleys, but I couldn’t tell which two because Hagrid stood in front of them. There was also a Gryffindor that I can’t really remember his name, and some other kid who might’ve been a Gryffindor but I can’t be sure.”

“So what did they do when they came in?”

“Well they first waved to me and Luna, but then realized that we were on a date so they let us have some privacy.”

“They talked to Aberforth for a little then realized that Malfoy was in the bar.”

“What happened after that?”

“Well, It looked like Malfoy and his friend became uncomfortable and wanted to leave but Hagrid was in front on the door and they didn’t do go near them. I had to go to the bathroom at this point so I left and came back, and everything seemed pretty much the same as when I left. So i just decided to snog with Luna.”

“That’s a really special relationship you got with her.” said Savage.

“Since when are rude comments about someone’s personal life part of an investigation?” said Dean raising his voice.

“When you mention them every other second!”

“Calm down!” shouted Kingsley, “Savage enough with the wisecracks. Dean continue with the story.”

“Well when I got back from the bathroom I saw Malfoy’s friend checking out Luna as I was with her.” said Dean, “So I confronted him about it.”

“Talk about a bias against the victim, I bet you would’ve dug a grave for him if you hadn’t gotten stabbed by that magical knife.”

“I’ll dig your grave if you want me to.”

“Don’t make threats to an auror kid, it’s a mistake.”

“I don’t take advice from assholes like you.”

“What a comeback. I think you deserve a round of applause, kid.”

“How about you don’t call me kid. I’m seventeen.”

“You’re still a kid.”

“You are such an arrogant conceited asshole! Did you know that?”

“I should put that on my resume.”

“Savage could I have a word with you in private?” said Kingsley exasperated.

“Absolutely.” replied Savage.

Kingsley and Savage both walked out of the room and closed the door.

“Can you act like a professional in there?” said Kingsley.

“I learned this from muggles, it’s called good cop, bad cop,” replied Savage, “I act like ajerk and you act nice so he tells you everything.”

“First off, there is no reason do that when we are simply asking questions. He is the first person we are asking question to. He’s providing the story to which we compare other stories you don’t need to act like he’s said something false when we don’t have any other story to go on.”

“Fine but you know I was right.”

“That’s why I didn’t stop you until now, but can we please finish the interrogation with a minor amount of interruption.”

“You’re the one commandeering this interrogation sir. I’ll just do whatever you want.”

“Don’t speak like that to me. We aren’t enemies here, we’re trying to discover the murderer, so let’s get on the same side.” Kingsley and Savage walked back into the rooms and sat in their chairs. “So you confronted him.”

“Yeah, and he denied that he ever looked at her, but Hagrid came over and backed me up, and told them to keep to themselves if they knew what was good for them. I think he had a couple before he got there.”

“What next?”

“Then I sat down next to Luna again, and we had an enjoyable ten minutes until
I see him doing it again so I go confront him again, and he pulled out his wand and let out a little yelp. I was surprised so I jumped back and fell over the table, and so Harry’s group me and the wand so they drew their wands and Draco drew his.”

“Was there a fight?”

“No. The Gryffindor whose name I can’t remember calmed down everything and everybody went back to their seperate areas, but there was tension between us. Next thing I know Harry and his group walk over to Malfoy’s table. They exchanged some words, and then they all went outside together.”

“Were any wands drawn?” asked Kingsley curious of the recent development as was Savage who listened very intently to what Dean was saying now.

“Nope. I was scared there was a duel so I told Luna I was going outside to check it out, and the minute i walk out I see Harry and Percy with their wands out while Malfoy and his friend are both on the ground without their wands.”

“Who was facing who with their wands.”

“Harry was facing Malfoy, Percy was facing his friend.”
Kingsley felt a rush of fear. “And after that?”

“I’m not sure. Someone had the Instant Darkness Powder that Weasley Wizard Wheezes sell and used it. I couldn’t see anything. I walked towards Harry and them but i tripped over somebody. It was weird because I think they were on the ground and I tripped over their torso, but I tried to reach and see who it was and I couldn’t. Then I didn’t know which way was which until a heard Luna yell. I ran in that direction right into a knife which got me right in the chest and I fell over.”

“It was a magic knife” Savage chimed in, “It sliced right into you and took a considerable amount of magic to heal. The knife was left at the scene but nobody knows who it belongs to”

“Can you venture a guess as to who it was?” said Kingsley.

“I really don’t know,” said Dean, “I grabbed them to try and stop myself from collapsing but whoever it was threw me very hard. I got up and Luna found and she helped me out of the powder. One of the Weasleys was standing outside of it looking in, but I couldn’t see anyone else, until the guy that broke up the fight came running out of the powder, but by that time the ministry had gotten there. When the powder cleared I could see that guy lying on the street dead. I was never far enough over there to touch him though, much less kill him.”

“Had to throw in that last bit to get yourself off, right?” said Savage

“Well Dean,” said Kingsley ignoring Savage, “that was quite a story.”

“I’m not sure what that means, Minister.” replied Dean a bit surprised.

“We’ll just have to check with the other suspects.”

“Are you telling me that I’m a suspect? I thought I was just a witness.”

“Dean, you have been placed at the site of a murder with a motive.”

“What motive?”

“The victim has been accused of being a Death Eater."

“I didn’t know that!”

“That’s a little hard to believe.” said Savage.

“The victim’s name was Terrence Rookwood, he was the son of the known Death Eater Augustus Rookwood.” said Kingsley, “You were attacked by Death Eater and watched them kill an injure people you know and love.”

“Then everybody’s got a motive in the whole bar!” exclaimed Dean.

“That’s the problem.” replied Savage.

“Dean,” said Kingsley, “thank you for the information you’ve given us, we’re going to interview the rest of the suspects now.”

“You’re not going to let me out? I was stabbed for goodness sake.” said Dean.

“Unforunately Dean you could’ve done that to yourself to throw suspicion off yourself, infact it is curious that you were the only other one injured by the murder weapon besides the victim.”

“That’s not my fault!”

“That’s for us to figure out.” said Savage.

As Dean was walking out Kingsley said to him, “Are you sure you don’t want to tell us who threw you?”

Dean looked at him for a second and said, “I already told you I don’t know who it was.”

“You don’t have any suspicions?”

“Are you trying to cover up for Hagrid?”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Not really. He could’ve easily thrown you, he is half-giant.”

“It’s all right, we’ll just ask Hagrid when he comes in.” said Savage.

Dean was taken away while Kingsley and Savage talked.

“Do you think he was telling the truth?” said Savage.

“I’m confident he was truthful until he talked about what happened when he went outside.” replied Kingsley. “The events that took place outside the Hog’s Head are very unclear.”

“Not everything about what happened in the darkness powder added up to me either.”

“We’ll have to find out who these other people are that he’s talking about and match them up to our list.”

“All right, who do you want to interrogate next?”

“Well we heard the story from a Gryffindor perspective, let’s try a Slytherin one.”

“Send in Draco Malfoy!”
