Background: Font color:
Christmas break had gone and they were all back at Hogwarts. Grace was sitting on her bed talking to Lily.
“So are you two together now?” Lily asked as she popped a chocolate into her mouth.
“I guess so” Grace laughed. “We never really talked about it; do you think he thinks we’re together?”
“Well I think that he thinks that you think that you’re together”
“I don’t think that you should think that he thinks that I think we’re together” Lily laughed.
“Because you could be wrong, and Lily Evans is never wrong”
“I’m not always right Grace”
“Yeah I suppose you’re not . . . because if you were always right, you wouldn’t be hiding the fact that you like a certain someone with messy brown hair and glasses”
“What are you on about Grace?”
“You know exactly what I’m on about, you like James Potter, but you are too stubborn to notice it”
“I thought we were up here to talk about you and Remus, not me and Potter”
“Conversations change” Grace said as she grabbed another chocolate. “All you have to do is say yes when he asks you out on a date”
“Why should I do that? What happens if he laughs at me for saying yes? What happens if the whole thing was a joke to him? Pulling me along day after day, pranking, showing off, and sending me presents, letters. . .”
“Wait. Presents and letters?” Lily didn’t say anything and got up from the bed, she crossed the room to her closet that she opened and shoved her way through the clothes. About 5 minutes later she came out holding a large box.
“Woah” was all that Grace could manage. “You kept them all?”
“Well. . . some letters were quite sweet and well I can’t just throw away presents.” Lily opened the box and Grace peered in. There were piles of parchment, necklaces, earrings, but something caught Grace’s eye.
“You put the flowers he gave you in a flower press?! Oh Lily if you deny liking him then I really don’t believe you now” Lily looked up at Grace with tears in her eyes.
“You don’t get it Grace, I can’t let him in; I can’t be hurt. Like I said, it could be just a joke to him.”
“Lily, he’s been after you for 3 years. He told me he likes you. You just have to accept that you like him back and that it’s not a joke. This is something real, something that could last forever.”
“Grace . . . you know something . . . forever? Are you trying to say that James and I will be together forever?”
“I didn’t say that”
“You might as well have. Your timeturner is not glowing, you don’t have to worry” Lily said as Grace looked down at the timeturner hanging around her neck and shook her head.
“Lily, just talk to him once in a while instead of shutting him down every time he tries to have a conversation with you”
“But what if. . .?”
“Just try Lily. . . that’s all”
“Okay I’ll try but if this goes wrong, I’m blaming you”
“I’ll take full responsibility.” Lily and Grace kept on talking and eating chocolate, not knowing what the conversation was hat was taking place downstairs.
“So are you together now Moony?” Sirius asked as he propped himself up on his elbows as he lay on the floor in front of the fire.
“I guess so. . . I never actually asked her. . . oh god do I have to ask her?” Remus stood up from the couch and starting pacing. “What happens if I ask her and she rejects me. . . I don’t think I could take that kind of rejection.” James grabbed Remus’ arm so he would stop pacing.
“Are you insane? She would jump you if she could.”
“Ah Prongs. . . jump me?”
“Technically term is. . . the act of surprise which leads to sexual intercourse”
“Well said Prongs” Sirius said and sat up. “What you need to do is ask her where she thinks you two are at, if she thinks you are together, then you’re together, if she thinks you’re more than friends, ask her out, but if she says, we’re friends; then run away . . . and don’t ask her, let her ask you when she wants to.”
“Speaking from experience Padfoot? Can you ever be friends with a girl?” Remus asked.
“Oh well there was this one time. . . well ah. . . Lily is my friend”
“She hates you”
“Prefers if you don’t touch her”
“Okay then. . . Challenge accepted!” Sirius exclaimed and stood up.
“Ah what?” James asked.
“I will prove you and Moony wrong by going out and finding a girlfriend. . . I mean. . . friend that is a girl. . . that I can snog. . . I mean. . . friend that is a girl with no benefits” he said and walked out the portrait hole.
“This I got to see” James said and followed him out. Remus look around to find nobody else in the common room, he took this to his advantage by situating himself on the comfy couch with a nice book. It was only about 5 minutes of reading that he drifted off to sleep.
“I know you still love her, you’re never going to let this go! She’s not going to come back and be with you! You’re too old for her.”
“You don’t know! She promised!”
“Then why are you with me? Did you feel sorry for me? Did you pity me? Because I liked you? Because you managed to marry me and now we are going to have a child together!”
“Nymphadora, I’m sorry, I thought she wasn’t going to come back, I was told that I should move on.”
“Well by the looks of it you haven’t, It hasn’t been 19 years since she left Remus!”
“REMUS!” Remus opened his eyes to see Lily and Grace looking down at him.
“Oh thank god, he’s not dead”
“Grace, we didn’t think he was dead in the first place, What’s wrong Remus, you look troubled in your sleep. . .”
“Oh nothing” he replied. “Nothing important, just a random dream”
“Well we’re going down for dinner, where’s tweedledum and tweedledee?”
“I said that Sirius couldn’t find a friend that’s a girl; he said he had you two. . .”
“I hate him”
“I prefer if he didn’t touch me”
“Yes well anyway, he accepted the challenge, so he and James are off somewhere plotting and scheming.”
“Well this is should be interesting” Grace said and walked out the portrait hole. Lily sat down next to Remus on the couch.
“Did you dream about Grace?”
“How did you. . .?”
“The way you looked at her when I asked.”
“Oh well yes, sort of, I mean, It was about her, but she wasn’t there. There was a woman there though, and we were fighting about Grace, apparently I was waiting for her after a number of years”
“Did you see what the woman looked like?”
“No but I remember calling her Nymphadora”
“As in Sirius’ second cousin?”
“Well you remember Andromeda Black got married to that muggle Ted Tonks and got banished from the family?”
“Well they had a child four years back and they called it Nymphadora”
“Well that can’t be, that would make her at least 13 years younger than me”
“You must like the younger women”
“Oh this is ridiculous. I don’t believe it, we should go to dinner”
“If you say so but Remus, if you have dreams like this again, tell me”
“Okay I will” Remus and Lily made their way down to dinner. As they reached the entrance to the Great Hall, they saw Grace, Sirius and James coming back from outside. James and Grace were in hysterics while Sirius had a sour look on his face.
“Oh Lily, you should’ve seen it. . . I don’t think I’ve ever. . .” and Grace fell on the floor in laughter, clutching her sides.
“Challenge went well did it Sirius?” Remus asked and smirked. Sirius grumbled something incoherent and walked into the Great Hall. Remus looked over at James.
“Well” James started and took a deep breath. “Before Grace came, we were just lounging by the big oak tree and she when she finally arrived, she scolded Sirius for thinking that he was her friend and told him to go find a new one. So Grace sat down next to me and Sirius got up to find his next victim. . . I mean, new friend. Anyway the first girl he asked. . . which was a stupid idea cause you just don’t ask someone to be their friend. . . so he asked her and she squealed and tackled him to the ground and starting snogging him senseless. . . From then on, Grace and I haven’t stopped laughing at his failed attempt. As you can see, I have stopped the laughter where as Grace has not.” Lily, James and Remus looked down at the brown haired girl rolling around on the ground laughing.
“Grace. Dinner” Grace stopped laughing and looked up at Lily who had extended her hand, she grabbed her hand and Lily pulled her up.
“Good laugh” Grace said and walked into the Great Hall, she stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Sirius talking to the one and only Elizabeth Harris.
“Hey Grace why’d you stop?” Remus asked. But then he saw what she was looking at.
“Who’s that?” James asked, for he had stopped too to see what they were looking at.
“Liz Harris” Lily said who had also stopped. “6th year Ravenclaw.”
“She’s pretty, kind of looks like you Grace” James said, who was still eyeing Liz.
“Now that you mention it, she does” Lily said looking from Grace to Liz then back to Grace.
“Some people look like others. . . It happens. . . now let’s go eat” Grace said and went and sat at the Gryffindor table. The others followed her but James and Lily were still eyeing Liz. Remus was worried that they would soon discover the connection between Liz and Grace. Worst of all. . . Sirius is involved. Remus sat next to Grace at the table and put his hand on her.
“It’ll be fine” he whispered in her ear. She smiled at him weakly and went back to her dinner.
“Hey guys” Sirius said as he sat down on the table. “Remus. . . I do believe I won my challenge.”
“Sirius, you haven’t won it yet. . . you just met the girl”
“Actually no, she met me, she bumped into me”
“Did she really Sirius? Or did you make her bump into you?” James inquired.
“No, she really did bump into me” Sirius defended and tucked into his dinner. “Change of subject. . . Where’s Peter?”
“Oh didn’t you know? He got himself a girlfriend. . . Hesta Burbanks. . . 5th year Ravenclaw” Lily said and pointed to the Ravenclaw table. Everyone turned their heads to see two short people talking and laughing over dinner.
“Peter? Girlfriend? How’d he manage that?” James asked.
“He was nice” Grace said and looked at Lily, they both started laughing.
“What? What’d I miss?” James asked. Grace and Lily just smiled and went back to their dinner.
“Girls” James muttered.
