‘How could he possibly think that I was actually going to forgive him?’ I thought. The smile growing more pronounce on my lips. He literally destroyed every chance I would have with Daniel. Just then I saw Mary walk through into the room.
“Hey Mary!” I yelled; she jumped a foot in the air. She clenched her heart as her breathing came in heavy gasps.
“Jeez Lily! You scared the crap out of me! What are you doing up this late?” she said, walking towards me.
“I could ask you the same questions.”
“Touché, so what are you doing?” she asked.
“The usual, plotting Potters demise, want to help?” she rolled her eyes.
“I expect nothing less from the famous Lily Evans.” I smiled.
“Mary I’m not famous, get over yourself.” I said, laughing “Besides what would I be famous for anyway?” Mary shrugged, “Exactly.”
“So what exactly are you planning on doing to him this time?” Mary asked curiously.
“Well I thought we might start off with making him lose his voice for a day…” Mary smiled maliciously.
I woke up from a little stream of light shining on my face. Some idiot must have left the shade open. I lifted my head up and looked around the room. Must have been Wormtail, he always does that. I threw my feet over the edge of the bed and slowly put my two feet on the ground. I winced a little from the coldness, but kept my cover. I shuffled to Wormtail’s bed and leaned my head over his ear, planning on scaring him. I opened my mouth to talk, but nothing came out. I tried again- still nothing.
I half ran to Sirius’s bed, tripping on a rug in the processes. I started pounding on Sirius’s back frantically when I got to him.
“Bloody hell, who is that?” Sirius said in a groggy voice. He looked over his shoulder at me, “James, if you don’t stop jumping up and down like a crippled skrewt, I am going to murder you in your sleep tonight.” He rolled over and closed his eyes. I sighed, frustrated and started hitting him again.
“What!” he yelled, slamming his hand on the bed. I moved my hands to my throat and clenched it.
“Are you choking?” Sirius asked. I shook my head furiously. I then started motioning my hand from my mouth, trying to interpret talking.
“Look, if you’re going to throw up go over to Peter’s bed.” I threw my hands up, frustrated and started tapping my hand on my chin- thinking.
“Oh I get it now!” Sirius said, “You thought of a new prank!” I gave him an exasperated look.
“What are you doing?” I heard Remus say from his bed.
“James came up with a new prank, but he won’t tell me what it is. Come on Prongs, spit it out!” Sirius said, frustrated. I shot a glare at Sirius and turned to Remus. I pretended I was singing in the opera.
“Are you feeling musical today James?” Remus asked, concerned. Peter who had been awake this whole time, just not saying anything was watching me from his bed.
“I-I think he-e-e is trying to-o say, he can-n’t talk.” Peter stuttered. I gave him thumbs up and turned in a circle so that everyone could see he was right.
“You can’t talk?” Remus asked. I gave him a look that said duh, and pointed to my throat again.
“Are you sick?” Sirius asked. I shook my head and thought for a moment. I ran to the end of my bed and dug through the pile of clothes collecting there since the beginning of the year.
“Do you really think this is a good time to be cleaning up your clothes?” Remus said, I ignored him. I found what I was looking for and walked to the middle of the room again. I held out my wand in front of their faces. They exchanged looks of confusion. I sighed and pretended to cast a spell.
“Oh! I got this one!” Sirius said, jumping on his bed like a little four year old, “Magic, magic! Right?” he said. I smiled brightly and shook my head up and down. I could see Remus from the corner of my eye shaking his head incredulously. Sirius was still smiling stupidly and jumping up and down on the bed- resembling his dog side. I smiled, I tried to say something to Sirius, but all that came out was a gasp. It felt like my throat literally sealed itself off so I couldn’t speak- definitely magic. Magic probably done by the one and only Snivellus Snape.
I made a face of disgust. “Oh, that face is so easy. You’re thinking about Snivellus!” Sirius said, waving his hand girlishly at me. When I didn’t answer Remus cut in.
“Do you think Snape did this to you?”
“Snivellus.” Sirius corrected. I pointed at Sirius and nodded.
“But how would he get in here? No one knows the password.” I shrugged and motioned them to the door.
“You want to get Snivellus now?” Sirius asked. I shook my head and grabbed my stomach. As if on cue, my stomach growled. “Oh, right, food.” I nodded and then started hitting my fist into the palm of my hand, “And then we get Snivellus, got you Prongs.”
I walked out of the dorm room and to the Great Hall. With Remus, Peter, and Sirius at my heals, we walked into the Great Hall with determined faces. We sat at our normal spots at the Gryffindor table, which also happened to be right next to Lily. Thinking about Lily… she happened to be here right now. I sat down across from her and gave my famous crooked smile. She rolled her eyes and turned away from me.
I opened my mouth the talk again, but realized I couldn’t. I smacked Sirius on the head. Some food he was eating spit out onto the table. Lily gave it a look of revulsion and turned to talk to Mary.
“Hey what was that for?” he said, rubbing the back of his head. I pointed frantically at Lily. Sirius nodded and turned to her. “Hey Lily…” Sirius looked over at me. I moved my hands in a circular rotation motioning him to continue, “James wants to know if you want to go to Hogsmeade with him.” I smacked him on the head again. “Hey!”
“Oh does he?” Lily said. The way she said that made me look at he with wide eyes. It sounded as if she was going to say yes.
“Yeah, he has been talking about it all night.” Sirius added on.
“Did he?” Lily said sweetly. I practically melted where I sat. My eyes drooped and my mouth opened slightly.
“So… do you want to?” Sirius pried.
“Why isn’t he asking me?” she said, raising her eye brows in confusion.
“We thought we’d take a new approach…” I nodded my head furiously.
“Well Potter, I’ll make you a deal.” She said, leaning forward. She meant business “If you ask me yourself right now, I will go to Hogsmeade with you.” I immediately opened my mouth and tried to speak, but nothing came out. I tried as hard as I could, but it felt as though my throat would split in two if I tired anymore. I gasp for air after my final attempt.
“Speechless I see? I’ve never seen this side before. Usually you would be trying to pry a yes out of me. I’m hurt.” She said, touching her heart. I felt like my heart would crack, she looked so heartbroken. I starred at her with pleading eyes. “Well since you are refusing my offer, I guess I will be off.” Lily got up and left the Great Hall with Mary following closely behind her.
I slammed my head repeatedly on the table.
“Now come on James, it wasn’t that bad.” Remus said, patting me sympathetically on the back. I looked up and glared at him.
“Are you kidding me!” Sirius said, “That was a train wreck. Here Lily just gave him a free pass to Hogsmeade heaven and he can’t talk.” I saw Remus give him an agitated look.
“If only Snape didn’t take away your voice.” Peter said. My face changed from so many expressions at once that it looked like Remus was starting to question my sanity. I got up, taking my wand out of my pocket. I speed walked to the Slytherin table, but at the same time kept my swag. I mean I was freaking James Potter! I don’t speed walk without swag.
I stopped when I got to Snivellus. I directed my wand at his back, poking him so he knew I was there. He turned nonchalantly in his chair. When he saw me he sighed.
“What, no crafty lines to complete your drastic entrance.” He said. A few Slytherins who heard Snivelluses comment laughed. My cheeks turned a light shade of red and I pointed my wand hard into his chest. He sighed and took out his wand. I backed up a little to give him room to get up- but not much. We stood there for a moment “Aren’t you going to say something?” he said.
“Don’t patronize him Snivellus.” Sirius said.
“Yeah, we know you took James voice. Just give it back and we will be on our way.” Remus said- always the conversationalist.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” He said, confused. I didn’t buy it, not one bit. I pointed the wand with more force at him. “Seriously I don’t, but whoever did this has my thanks.” We starred at each other for a minute. I could feel Remuses tension behind me rise with every second.
“Come on James, he didn’t do it.” Remus said. I starred at Snivellus for another minute before lowering my wand.
“That’s right Potter, crawl away from a duel- coward!” he yelled. I turned around immediately and slapped Snivelluses wand from his hand and pulled the hood of his school uniform above his head- blocking his vision.
“Why didn’t you use magi-ic?” Peter stuttered. I pointed my finger to my mouth and shrugged, walking away. Me, Sirius, Peter, and Remus started walking back to the common room.
“Alright, so if Snape didn’t do it, who did?” Remus asked. I shrugged.
“Really Remus, if we knew who did it, we would have jinxed them by now.” Sirius said. I pointed to Sirius with approval, Remus rolled his eyes.
“Well, who do we know that has a deep hatred for James and would want to take his voice away?” Remus asked.
“That’s easy, every male in this school. I mean, look at him mate.” Sirius said, motioning his hands at me. I smiled my dazzling smile and ran a hand through my already messy black hair.
“Oh yeah the real charmer.” Remus murmured.
“It is possible.” Peter said, trying to join in on the conversation.
“Yeah, but who would hate James that much?” Sirius asked.
“Lily?” Peter said. I started laughing really loudly and so did Sirius.
“Yeah right, like Evans would actually do that!” Sirius barked.
“Yeah Peter, I don’t think Lily did it.” Remus said. When Remus said something wasn’t so, you knew it was the end of the topic- Remus knew all. We walked back to the common room and sat on the chairs near the fire. It had started raining out and the rain mixed with wind was beating against the windows of the tower.
“Maybe Daniel did it.” Remus said, breaking the silence. I circled my hand, implying that it was possible.
“Or not, I’ve seen pigmy puffs smarter than that block or wood.” Sirius said, laughing at his own joke. I smiled, but was still thinking.
If Daniel did do it, that would mean that he would have had to sneak into our room from his room and cast a spell on me without us noticing. Besides he has a motive- I ruined his date with Lily.
“It’s possible.” Remus said. I snapped to get Remuses attention, when he looked I pointed to my head and put a thumbs up.
“You were thinking the same thing?” I held up another thumbs up.
“Only one sure way to find out.” Sirius said, staring off into space.
“What is that?” Remus asked.
“Looks like we need to get the invisibility cloak out.”
“What are you talking about? How will that solve anything?” Remus emphasized each word. Sirius shrugged.
“I don’t know, it sounded cool.” Sirius said. I thought for a moment. I snapped my fingers.
“You have an idea James?” Remus asked. I nodded my head excitedly. I got up from my seat and scampered throughout the common room looking for a piece of parchment and a quill. When I found it I came back to my seat. I started scribbling furiously on the parchment. When I was done I looked at is appraisingly and showed the parchment to Remus, Sirius, and Peter.
“Wicked.” Sirius and Remus said at the same time. I nodded, putting my hands behind my head.
This had to be one of the most brilliant plans I have ever come up with.
