Chapter 15 - Finding out the Truth
Before anymore could be said, someone knocked softly on the bedroom door. A second later, the door opened to reveal Professor Dumbledore, Remus and Tonks visible over his shoulder.
“Hello Harry, Jennifer,” Dumbledore greeted, smiling softly at the two teenagers looking towards him. “It’s safe to come out now. The house has been secured.”
Jenny sighed, glancing over at Harry as she did so before looking back towards Dumbledore. “I guess it’s time for the explanation that Harry said would come later.”
“Indeed it is,” Dumbledore replied.
Jennifer pursed her lips for a moment before gesturing to the hallway. “It’s probably a better idea to do this in the dining room,” she told them. Normally whenever someone visited the house, they would sit and talk in the living room, but after what just happened, that was out of the question. If she went in there, she was likely to lose the little composure she currently had.
Dumbledore, Remus, and Tonks moved out of the doorway and into the hallway to let Harry and Jennifer through. Once out of her room, Jennifer led them down the hallway and into the dining room, flipping a light switch on the wall just next to the hallway as she went. The room filled with warm yellow light as eight recessed lights in the ceiling flared to life. All the while, Jennifer did her best to avoid looking towards the living room. She topped just before the fire place and turned around to face Harry, Dumbledore, Remus, and Tonks.
She gestured for them to sit at the large, wooden dining room table. The group sat down at the table as Jennifer stood there before the fire place watching them. Dumbledore sat down in their chair closest to the hallway while Remus and Tonks on his right while Harry to the seat to the headmasters left. Jennifer ran a hand through her hair once they were seated and heaved a heavy sigh. “Okay, first off, who the hell was that guy? And who are you?”
“My name is Albus Dumbledore,” Dumbledore began. He gestured to the two people to his right. “Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks, who prefers to be called Tonks,” he added when the pink haired witch glared in his direction. At the correction of her name, she beamed at Dumbledore before looking back towards Jennifer.
“Hello Jennifer,” she greeted.
Jennifer smiled back hesitantly. “Jenny,” she told the women. “I’m usually only called Jennifer when I am in trouble.” Like I was when I got home earlier, she thought sadly. Her parents would never call her by her full name again. The last time she had spoken to them, she had lied to them. The smile disappeared from her face.
“And you have already met your brother Harry,” Dumbledore continued, gesturing to Harry beside him, who gave Jennifer a small smile. Jennifer tried to smile back at him but it came out looking more like a grimace then a smile. “And the one that entered your home this evening goes by the name of Lord Voldemort.”
Jennifer nodded slowly, beginning to slowly pace back and forth in front of the fire place as she took all this in. “Okay,” she began. “Harry told me that they were after his sister…Or me actually.” She stopped pacing for a moment and looked towards the four other people in the room. “But why? Why me? Why him?” she asked, gesturing towards Harry.
Dumbledore glanced over at Harry for a moment before looking towards Jennifer. “I’ll let you brother explain to you why Voldemort is after him,” he told her. Harry glanced over at him, expression surprised at the headmasters words. “It will be a way for you two to bond,” he continued after a moment. Harry nodded slightly in understanding as he looked towards Jennifer, who was watching them with a curious expression on her face. “But he was after you because you are the holder of the Hogwarts Power Gem, a pure white stone necklace.”
Jennifer’s eyebrows went up on her forehead. “He was after my necklace? Seriously?” she asked, her tone of voice showing her disbelief. A simple little necklace was what he had been after? A little necklace supposedly held a lot of power? Yeah right. You’re really thinking that after what you just saw?
Her eyebrows went back down and she ran a hand through her now black hair as she sighed heavily. “So what does this gem do?” she asked as she her arm dropped back to her side.
“The gem contains a fraction of the powers of three of the most well known witches and wizards of all time,” Dumbledore replied.
Jennifer blinked as she processed his words. Powers? Witches? Wizards? She shook her head. “Magic? That’s why he was after me? Because I have a magical necklace?” she asked before shrugging slightly. “The fine, you guys take it and keep it away from him while I try to fix the mess that man caused here.”
The man named Remus, who had yet to say anything to her, sighed. “I am afraid that is not possible.”
Jennifer cocked an eyebrow and placed her right hand on her hip. “And why the hell not?” she asked him, her temper beginning to flare. Why couldn’t they just take the stupid necklace and leave her be? The man had already taken her parents with magic? What else was she going to lose?
“He knows where you are now,” Dumbledore responded, his expression being one of what Jennifer would call the bearer of bad news. Like those that went to the families of those in the military to tell them that their loved one had been lost. “And if you remain here, he will come after you again.”
Jennifer felt as though a brick had been dropped into her stomach at Dumbledore’s words. He’d come after her again. He’d already killed her parents, had it in for the guy that was apparently her brother, and if he came after her again…Jennifer bit her lip and turned away from the table, staring at the doorway that led to the living room, where he parent’s bodies still lay.
Slowly, her breathing growing shallow as she walked, she moved over to stand in the doorway, staring at her parents bodies. She swallowed the growing lump in her throat as she stood there, taking in their faces that were contorted in horror. He had killed her parents in an effort to get to her. If she remained in Apple Valley and he came again, he could very well kill her friends as well. They were in danger if she stayed. But on the other hand, Apple Valley was her home. She grew up in the small town, had great friends, she had a life here. A life that was good and that she loved. She didn’t want to leave.
Jennifer took a deep breath, blinking back the growing tears in her eyes. But if she stayed, everyone else she loved was in danger. She didn’t want anyone else to die because of one madman trying to get to her. She sniffed as she tore her eyes away from her parents and looked towards the table. “Alright,” she told them, her voice threatening to break. She didn’t want to leave, but she also didn’t want to see her friends dead along with her parents. “I’ll go with you.”
Dumbledore nodded as she rubbed her eyes. “Go pack your things Jennifer,” he instructed her. “We’ll takeoff in half an hour.”
Jennifer dropped her arm back down to her side, her brows furrowing as she looked towards Dumbledore. “Takeoff? You mean like a plane?”
The wizard chuckled. “No, Jennifer. We’ll be taking broomsticks to a secure location in San Bernardino.”
Broomsticks. Oh boy. Jennifer bit her lip and glanced at the back door. She couldn’t just leave Jessie. She had helped bring the horse back to health and cared for it a great deal. That and she was a gift from her parents, a gift that Jennifer did not want to leave behind. “Um, just a little problem,” she began after a moment, reaching up and scratching the back of her neck. “You see, I have a horse. My mom works,” she swallowed. “Worked, for the ASPCA and sometimes she would bring home animals that she was helping recover from whatever had happened to them. Jessie was one of them. During the time we were caring for her, I grew attached to her. So instead of finding her a new home, my parents adopted her as a gift since it was just a few weeks until my birthday.”
“You wish to bring her?” Dumbledore asked, looking towards her with twinkling eyes.
“Yeah,” Jennifer replied. “I’ve got my drivers license last month, so that won’t be a problem. And I know how to hook the horse trailer up to the crew cab.”
“I think Hagrid would like something new to look after,” Harry commented, looking between Dumbledore and Jennifer. “Though he would be a little disappointed that she isn’t very dangerous.”
Jennifer raised an eyebrow at that comment but said nothing. That would be something that she would have to ask him later. Dumbledore chuckled softly before smiling towards Jennifer. “Alright, she may come and you may drive to the secure location.”
“Okay,” she nodded. She would bring out the maps of San Bernardino that were buried in the closet in the front bedroom and figure them out after she was packed. “I’ll just,” she sighed, glancing over her shoulder towards the doorway to the living room. She tore her eyes away from the doorway and began to head toward the hallway. “I’ll just go pack.”
With that she headed down the hall to her bedroom. Once she had disappeared down the dark hallway, Harry looked between the adults at the table for a moment before pushing his chair back and standing up. “I’m going to go and see if I can help her pack,” he told Dumbledore before he headed down the hallway after Jennifer.
