Sometimes, life surprises you.
She would never, in her wildest dreams (and she'd had many), have imagined herself battling Bellatrix Lestrange, either.
And yet, here she was.
Bella cackled, shouting "Crucio!"
Marietta fell, holding her sides and screaming. It hurt so much; she could feel her insides burning, and tears were streaming down her face but they didn't help at all; they were burning, too.
Everything was burning.
Bella laughed again, stamping her feet in a deranged happy dance. "Come on!" she shouted. "You thought you could take me on,get up and fight!" She cast spell after spell, and Marietta stood up.
Why me? She was desperate, tears streaming down her face, but she was mad, madder than she ever had been, and she cast curses and hexes and everything she could remember at Bellatrix.
And it did nothing, and Bella just stood there and laughed, dodging everything Marietta had.
You're a Ravenclaw, dammit, she told herself, and she squeezed her eyes shut. You can beat her!
But she wasn't so sure about that, and as her energy wavered, she almost wanted to be killed, just so she could end this humiliation.
"You know," she said suddenly, dodging the cursesflying around her, "for someone so feared, you're not very good at what youdo."
Bella snarled. "You filthy – Crucio!"
But Marietta expected it, and she dodged it easily, light on her feet. "I'm serious. You could have killed me, what? Five timesnow? And you haven't? That, my dear, is just bad fighting."
She was babbling, desperate that if she were going to die, well, she would go down fighting.
Bella smirked. "Avada Kedavra!"
She had a smile on her face, but as the curse rebounded—how the hell had it rebounded?—she only barely managed to duck out of the way.
"Crucio!" Marietta shouted, and Bella was down, if only for a minute.
It was all Marietta needed.
She ran, not bothering to check behind her, only hearing the cackle of Bellatrix as she chased her, and then Ginny Weasley's voice—"NO!"
She vaguely remembered her; she had been the one who was brilliant at Bat-Bogey Hexes, wasn't she? The brother of that Grangergirl's boyfriend?
And they still thought she had betrayed them,Marietta realized with a jolt. How could they—why would she have? She'd beenfed Veritaserum, they all had, only she hadn't known not to drink it. She wasn't brave, but she wasn't an idiot.
Marietta lifted a hand to her face, feeling the remains of the Hex they had cast on her still there, years later. She closedher eyes, gripping her wand tightly, and ran back out into the throng.
Sometimes, people change.
"Ginny!" she shouted, desperately, not counting on Ginny hearing her, only knowing that she had to try.
Bellatrix was attacking, cackling, and Marietta tried to help, but she was pushed back, back, and she tried to run but she couldn't, and then there was a loud rushing in her earsand though she didn't hear the words, she knew what had been said.
