Rally the Troops
by ericajen

Kreacher had just gotten to the kitchens of Hogwarts where the rest of the house-elves were congregating. They were frightened and scared of the upcoming battle. They didn’t know what was going to happen and there was no one around to tell them what to do. These elements combined together left them in a state of furious confusion and tense anticipation.

“We have to fight!” Kreacher shouted over the din of the room. His voice was hoarse and rough and he found it difficult to raise it so loudly, but it was a firm statement nonetheless.

This caused an uproar of protests from the other house-elves. They didn’t want to fight. They were too frightened to fight. They were small beings, especially compared to the witches and wizards they would be forced to fight against. They thought they surely wouldn’t stand a chance against such forces.

“Listen to me!” Kreacher yelled but to no avail; the upheaval of shouting continued to carry throughout the kitchen.

“House-elves are no match for big wizards!”

“Where is masters to give us orders?”

“Elves cannot fight!”

Kreacher was beginning to become frustrated with the lack of enthusiasm and courage from his counterparts. He had been so sure that he would stride into the kitchen, announce that the fight was coming, and then go back to the battle with dozens of house-elves following right behind him, ready to fight.

And now he was beginning to feel discouraged himself. If the other elves refused to fight, Kreacher wasn’t worth much in the battle. What could one measly house-elf do against an army of Death Eaters? He didn’t think his efforts would amount to anything against those of the scary hooded wizards. They would surely be able to kill him without a second thought or too much effort.

While the chaos of the kitchen continued to flourish on, Kreacher kept silent, staring down at his feet. He had never felt so disappointed which was quite the feat considering all the unfortunate happenings that occurred previously in his life.

After a few minutes of feeling quite sorry for himself, Kreacher happened to catch a glance of the locket dangling around his neck. Suddenly, a fierce determination rose inside of him. He wasn’t going to stand around and let this opportunity pass him by, he was going to take advantage of it the best he could. He wasn’t going to cower in the kitchens while a battle was going on.

“QUIET!” he roared and the authority in his voice silenced the kitchen immediately. “It is time to fight!” he announced. “Hogwarts is home and elves must protect home with their lives! If elves do not fight now, we are bad elves and do not deserve to have work here.”

There was a moment of silence as the rest of the house-elves considered this new argument. But they all knew that Kreacher was right. They had to fight for their home; for Hogwarts. They had to fight for Dobby, who had died doing what was right.

Quickly, the house-elves prepared to go fight. They gathered whatever they could that might help them and stormed out of the kitchens and toward the sounds of the battle.

This was it. This was Kreacher’s chance to avenge his master Regulus. It was his chance to fight for his master’s name and make sure that his death was not in vain. Kreacher was determined to not take this moment for granted.

Fight, fight for my master, the defender of the house-elves! Fight the Dark Lord, in the name of brave Regulus! Fight!" Kreacher cried and it was the last thing that was said before the house-elves officially and furiously joined the battle.
