Chapter 6 : Letters

Background: Font color:
Today was starting just like another typical day in my third year of Hogwarts. I got up, did my bathroom needs, got dressed, and then went down stairs for breakfast. I learned earlier on during first year that if I went to breakfast early, then I saved myself from yet another encounter with James Potter. While at breakfast something that happens only once every few weeks happened and it made me extremely happy. I watched as my owl Chandler landed swiftly in front of me and in his mouth a letter title ‘To Lily’. I grabbed the letter and gave Chandler some food before he took off, I suspect to the owlary where he had taken a particular fancy to a brown and gold owl. I opened the letter to my mum’s hand writing.
Dear my little flower,
I miss you so much Lily! The house is just not the same without you here and your father and I are waiting anxiously for you to come home next week for Christmas break. Petunia is even excited to see you. I know you two have been fighting but I sincerely think that she wants to make amends with you. Be the responsible one here Lily, even if things don’t go as well as you think she is your sister after all and you need to be nice to each other. That is an order! But to end this letter in a happier note, how is school? Is James still annoying you, he was so cute when he was younger. I really think you should give the kid a chance Lil’s he did after all send you a letter every day in the summer and I do mean every day. He seems to really like you and I just think it is rude to push him aside. If you don’t start acting civil with that boy I’m going to have to invite him over our house this Christmas. Don’t make me do that Lily Edda Evans! Love your always compassionate, lovable, all knowing mother!
I looked down at the letter my mum had sent me and practically crumpled it up and threw it to the fire. You can’t end a letter on a happier note if it includes Potter. The only thing that stopped me from throwing it out was a little arrow in the lower right hand corner saying ‘turn over’. I flipped it to see another letter from my dad.
I agree with your mother on that the house is not the same without you. However I do not agree on you giving that Potter kid a chance. You are too young and I know from personal experience that boys your age are not mature enough to handle a relationship. So basically what I am saying to you is that if you date someone right now, it is doomed to failure. And about this Petunia situation, I have no idea what your mother is trying to get into your head but I have not once heard Tuney say anything like that. Although I do think you two should work out whatever it is that is keeping you two mad at each other. I can’t wait for you to come home Lil’s I miss you too much! Love your favorite parent.
The two things I hated in the entire world. One making amends with James Potter. Second making amends with Petunia, especially Petunia because I have no idea what I did to make her hate me so much in the first place. I folded the letter and put it back in the envelope. I continued eating my breakfast, enjoying the fact that there were only a few people down in the Great Hall this early. I heard footsteps behind me, but before I could turn around someone clasped their hands over my eyes so that I couldn’t see.
“Guess who?” the voice said.
“Let’s see, could it possibly be my best friend Sev?” I said while taking their hands off my eyes. Sure enough when I turned around Sev was standing there.
“How do you always know it is me,” he asked while taking a seat next to me and grabbed a role while placing butter on it.
“Your voice, I would know it anywhere,” Lily said while smiling at Sev and punching him playfully. Although Severus was a Slytherin, he was my best friend and a little thing like him being in a different house was never going to change that.
“Ugh, we have Potions first today,” I said while groaning. Don’t get me wrong, I loved potions especially since Sev was my partner. But potions this early in the morning was like the kiss of death, besides Slughorn expected my potions to be perfect and that just wasn’t the case.
“Potions is not that bad,” Sev said while shrugging.
“Your right, but having it this early is always a drag,” I said while wrinkling my nose in disgust.
“Oi! Snivellus, what are you doing at my table and in my seat!” A loud obnoxious voice yelled from across the Hall. Severus cringed at the voice and I don’t blame him. The voice was like broken glass in your ears.
“Nothing is yours Potter, he can sit here if he wants to,” I said while glaring at Potter.
“Actually he can’t, I won’t have some slimy, deceiving, ungrateful, snake sitting at the Gryffindor table while I’m around,” Potter said while glaring at Severus.
“It’s alright Lily, I’ll see you in potions,” Severus said while getting up and bumping into Potters left shoulder on purpose. Potter glared at Severus as he left the Great Hall, when he was finally gone he sat down next to me.
“So Lilykins, what are you doing this weekend?” Potter asked me. I flinched at the nickname he had given me during second year.
“Nothing that involves a pig head like you,” I said while getting up to leave.
“Really because I was thinking you and I should go to Hogsmeade this weekend,” James said while turning to me.
“Do we really have to go through with this again Potter? I wouldn’t go to Hogsmeade with you even if the human race depended on it,” I started walking down the aisle to the exit, but Potter was after me sooner than you could say Butter beer. This routine of Potter asking me out all started this past summer when he sent me his first letter.
***First Day of summer*
Finally exams were all done and it was summer. No school for a total of ten weeks. I walked downstairs and into the kitchen for breakfast. I smiled as I looked at the clock and it said 12:30 PM. I could sleep late without worrying about someone waking me or yelling at me to get ready for class. I walked over to the cupboard and grabbed a bowl, spoon, and some cereal. I poured cheerios, my favorite cereal, into a bowl while adding milk and finally the spoon. I took a seat at the kitchen table, while looking around my kitchen. The walls were a bright yellow that made the whole kitchen light up especially at noon. The floors were white adding to the brightness. The cupboards were a medium brown which complimented both the floor and the walls. It was a very inviting environment and always seemed to be the one place I could think clearly. I took a bite of my cereal and thought about what I was going to do today. I heard the front door open and footsteps coming into the kitchen. I looked up to see that it was Petunia. She was dressed in workout clothes which were an orange tight fitted shirt and black shorts. Petunia changed over the years; she was now tall and very skinny, almost too skinny. She had curly dark brown hair that fell to her shoulders. Petunia walked to the refrigerator completely ignoring me and grabbed water.
“Good morning Tuney,” I said while giving her a heartfelt smile. I really loved my sister, but for the past two years she has been ignoring me completely. Petunia looked at me and rolled her eyes.
“I said good morning Petunia,” I repeated. She walked out of the kitchen and up the stairs to the bathroom. A few minutes past and I heard the shower start. I don’t know what has gotten into her, but this little charade she has going on is really starting to put me in a pissed off mood. I angrily scooped up some cereal and placed it in my mouth. I then started mimicking Petunia’s attitude by making faces and moving my mouth like a fish out of water. I heard a bang on the window that completely scared me and made me jump a foot in the air. I saw Chandler at the window holding a letter in his mouth. I opened the window and let him in. I then grabbed the letter and sat down at the table. Expecting it to be Mary, I opened it fast and swiftly. I really needed her to come to my house this summer and soon. I took the piece of parchment out of the letter and looked at it.
It has been only one day away from you and already I miss you! I’m thinking me you at eight o’clock at the leaky cauldron, huh? Sounds good right, excellent can’t wait to see you!
I practically spit out a mouth full of cereal with amusement. As soon as I swallowed I burst out into a fit of laughter. I crumpled up the piece of parchment and tossed it into the trash can with an over hand throw. I laughed again, yeah right like I would actually go to the Leaky Cauldron with Potter. That was a good one. I finished my cereal and continued with the rest of my day.
The Next Day.
I woke up abruptly when I heard a scream from down stairs. I quickly got up and sprinted down the stairs wand at the ready expecting there to be a Death Eater or a fire. When I got down there I saw Petunia cowering in a corner while looking at Chandler who was sleeping on the counter.
“What’s wrong,” I asked concerned. Petunia looked at me and then Chandler while screaming,
“You freak!” she quickly ran out of the kitchen and out the door. I stood there completely baffled as to what just happened. So I guess I’m a freak because I have a pet owl? I walked over to Chandler still confused. I took the letter that was lingering in his mouth and opened the window so that he could go outside. But Chandler just stood there and made himself more comfortable.
“Lazy owl,” I said while shaking my head at him and opening my letter.
What happened? I thought you were going to meet me yesterday at the Leaky Cauldron! Maybe you didn’t get my owl so I’ll ask you again. Do you want to come to the Leaky Cauldron with me tonight?
Once again I crumpled up the piece of parchment and threw it into the trash can. But over the next few weeks, I just kept getting more and more letters from Potter. At one point I just threw away every letter Chandler brought me. By doing so I accidently threw away a couple of Mary’s letters but all was quickly resolved when I told her what was going on. But unfortunately for me, Potter continued with the letters. It started with just letters asking me to hang out with him, but after a while he began writing poems to me…
Your eyes are green,
Your hair is red,
My love for you is strong,
How do you like my song?
The poem he wrote was horrible, but that didn’t surprise me. I never took Potter as the poetic type. And what was it with the last line? As soon as I thought that the letter he sent me began to sing. I could tell it was Potter singing because of his high pitched voice. I quickly grabbed the letter and ripped it into a million pieces, but I could still here the song playing. All I could think about at the moment was to stop the song, without thinking I quickly shoved the pieces of paper into my mouth and started chewing on them. When I was sure I couldn’t hear the music anymore I spit it out and into the trash can. I am never opening another letter from him.
“Come on, at least consider it,” he said while following me out of the Great Hall.
“All right… No,” I said and he stopped following me.
“One of these days Evans, you are going to say yes to me,” he yelled after me. It made me angry when people told me what I was going to say yes and no to.
“Just keep dreaming Potter,” I said while turning the corner. I headed up to Gryffindor tower and sat down in the common room once I got there. I sat at a table in the corner of the room and grabbed some ink and parchment from my bag. I started writing a letter back to my parents.
Dear mum and dad,
Hogwarts is great, thanks for asking me and I miss you guys so much. I can’t wait to see you guys over Christmas break. As for the Potter matter, sorry mum I agree is dad. Except that I will never give him a chance even when I’m older. Now for the Petunia matter, I can’t fix anything unless I know why she is mad at me. I’m still confused about that particular subject. See you soon!
LilyI called over Chandler and attached the letter to his leg. I then told him to send the letter home and let him out the window. I went to the girl’s dormitory to get my potions materials. I then made my way out of the common room and to potions. Once there, I sat at my usual table with Sev sitting next to me. About ten minutes later the class room was full and Slughorn was still not there yet.
“Looks like the Slug is moving even slower this morning,” Sev told me.
“Doesn’t he always,” I said while resting my head on the table. I looked up at Sev who seemed distracted.
“What’s got you in deep thought,” I asked laughing a little. But Severus was frowning while saying,
“Potter is staring at you,” he said while turning to the front.
“Seriously, what else is new Sev? He is always staring at me these days. I don’t know what he has come up with in that thick head of his,” I said while turning to face James who was indeed staring at me. When he saw I was looking his way he smiled and gave me a little wave. I turned my head instantly rolling my eyes to Sev.
“You like him don’t you,” Sev said in a depressed tone.
“Who? Potter?” I said while laughing, “The day I like Potter is the day you become a Death Eater,” I said jokingly. But after I said that, Sev shut his eyes and his hand balled up into a fist.
“Severus, I am never going to like Potter. Ever,” I said while emphasizing the last word. He smiled, but it soon turned into another frown.
“One day Lily, you are going to fall for him,” Sev said while looking down. I felt like a deer caught in the headlights, and I have no idea what brought this feeling on, but all I knew was that I didn’t like it.
“Severus, look at me,” I said sternly. He looked up and into my eyes.
“I promise I won’t fall for James Potter,’ I said reassuringly. He smiled at me and the Slughorn walked in.
“Sorry I’m late class. I had important matters to intend to, one being stealing the last corn muffin,” he said while laughing and turning to the class. Nobody laughed at his joke and just stared up at him with bored tired faces.
“Well since you all seem to be still asleep… ahem Mr. Black,” Professor Slughorn said. Black looked up dazed and confused before putting his head back onto the table again.
“We will start by brewing a cheering solution,” he said while clapping with excitement.
“But first I have decided in the last five seconds that it is about time to change seats,” he said looking pleased with this decision. There were a couple of groans that went throughout the class room, one being from me.
“Come on people, up you go against the wall,” everyone got up unwillingly and leaned against the wall.
“Mr. Potter and Severus sit here,” Potter glared at Sev who looked at me with an unhappy expression.
“Mr. Lupin and Ms. Mullin here,” he said while tapping the desk next to Severus’s. The girl Remus was paired with giggled a little before taking a seat next to Remus who looked horrified. I bet it was because earlier this week he had found out that Brooke Mullin had an incredibly huge crush on Remus. I didn’t blame her though; Remus was one of the nicest down to earth people I knew.
“Ms. Evans and Mr. Black,” Slughorn said while tapping a desk next to Remuses. Black looked over to me while smiling, I sighed heavily and made my way over to the table.
“Hello potions partner,” he said excitedly.
“Don’t get to excited Black, you still have to do some work,” Black sighed and threw his head back while cursing to the heavens. I grinned satisfied with his reaction and went to get the ingredients we would need for the potion. Black followed me over to the supplies cabinet. I instructed him to put his hands out so that I could pile all the ingredients needed for the potion into his hands. After I got the last ingredient we walked back to our table and began to work on the potion. After adding a few ingredients to the potion and stirring it a little, we had to let it sit for ten minutes.
“We have to wait ten minutes until adding the next ingredient,” I told Black. He nodded and sat down.
“So Lily I have a question for you,” he said while staring at me.
“Yeah?” I asked a little curious to what he had to ask me.
“Why won’t you go to Hogsmeade with James?” I laughed at his question.
“Ah, that is easy. He is an ignorant prat who thinks that he can get any girl he wants just by smiling at them and putting the charm on,” I said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“I can hear you,” I heard Potter yell from his table.
“That’s what you get for eavesdropping Potter,” I yelled back at him. That answer however brought Black to another question.
“But I do that, and it doesn’t seem you hate me as much as him,” Black said.
“Very good Black, but the difference between you two is that you haven’t been asking me out every single day.” Black thought about that for a minute and shrugged his shoulders.
“He really isn’t that bad though,” he said looking surprisingly serious.
“Coming from his best mate,” I said with a slight laugh.
“That is true, but who knows him better than his best mate,” I looked at Black surprised that he actually said something that made sense. I looked over at Potter; he was looking at an ingredient that did not belong to the potion we were brewing. I saw him grab a pinch of the ingredient and slowly move away from the cauldron while still holding his hand over the cauldron. I then saw Sev make his way back to the potion. When his head was right over the potion Potter dropped in the ingredient and the potion exploded in Sev’s face turning his entire face black. Potter started laughing hysterically while Sev’s cheeks started turning red with anger and embarrassment. I looked back at Black who was also watching Potter. Black looked at me.
“He’s a Slytherin, what did you expect him to do,” Black said in defense for Potter. But that didn’t help him at all.
“Sev is my best friend, and Potter continues to make fun of him the most. If he actually liked me he would stop doing that to Sev,” I yelled at Black. He threw his hands up in defense as he saw my angry face.
“Hey Evans, I didn’t do anything. You can talk to James about this,” I rolled my eyes and went back to the potion. A minute later Black fell asleep for the second time during class. When it was time to finish the potion I had to wake him up.
“Black, it is time to finish the potion,” I said while adding an ingredient to the potion. When I didn’t hear a response I turned around and called his name again, but still no answer. I decided I would wake him up gently.
“Black wake up!” I said while pulling his seat back and flicking his head. He woke up shocked and confused as he looked at my face.
“Why the bloody hell would you wake me up Evan’s!” he yelled.
“Because we have a potion that needs tending smart one,” I said while turning back to the potion. Black got up and looked at the potion for a minute.
“It looks like you can take it from here,” he said while sitting down.
“Don’t you dare sit down and fall asleep again,” I yelled at him.
“I’m just resting my eyes Evans, chill out,” he said reassuringly. I didn’t believe him one bit though. By the time class was over I was tired and agitated. It didn’t help that Potter was walking next to me in the hallway.
“So Evans, I was thinking…”
“No,” I said in an annoyed tone.
“So that means you don’t want me to leave you alone. That’s great,” Potter said all cheery.
“I never agreed to that Potter,” I said getting angry.
“But you just said no you don’t want me to leave you alone,”
“No I didn’t,” I said in a now annoyed and angry voice.
“That’s what happens when you don’t let people finish their sentences,”
“Just leave me alone Potter I’m not in the mood for your cracking voice,” I said.
“It doesn’t crack that much!” Potter said his voice cracking.
“Ugh, stop talking Potter. Your voice is giving me a head ache,” I said while rubbing one of my temples.
“I’m sorry Lilykins, want me to make it up to you by taking you to Hogsmeade this weekend?”
“No, no, no, no, no!” I said getting frustrated.
“Why can’t you just take no as an answer!” I yelled at him. A few second years that were walking behind us, quickly walked in front of us and down a corridor.
“Because I know you want to go out with me,”
“No, I don’t want to go out with you. Not now, not tomorrow, not the next day or the next or the next,” I yelled. He didn’t look taken back at all, he just stared at me and smirked.
“You look really pretty when you’re angry,” he said while sighing. I slapped his head and walked away.
“That was a compliment Evans,” he yelled to me from down the hallway. I walked to my next class practically sprinting away from Potter. This happened almost every time I had potions. Potter asking me out, although he has been doing it every day lately, and me running to my next class.
And you wonder why I hate having potions first.
A/N: Hey guys! This may kind sort of, possibly might be a filler chapter.... My next chapter will be something I planned, but I started writing this chapter and then when I finished it I realized that I needed to save that part for a different year, but then I didn't want to just delete it! So it couldn't hurt to post it :P! Also I am starting another story, I will never leave this story until I'm done with it of course. But sometimes I get writers block and start thinking of something else.
