I fucking hate steps.

I’m seriously thinking about making a petition against them.

Normally I don’t care. I faze out and just follow them, but when I’ve got this much on my mind, their tedious repetitiveness is annoying. Cracking my neck, I stride up the flight of stairs leading up to the headmaster’s office with a purpose; this would be a quick meeting about prefects or something simpler. Then I could go take a nap in class. Good plan. I raised my hand and knocked on the door. He told me to come in and I proceeded without caution because it never occurred to me that Scorpius would also be summoned to this meeting. Stupid, stupid, stupid me.

I sat in the seat next to him since it was the only unoccupied seat in the room. A treacherous shiver went up in my hand as I accidently touched his arm. I tightened my jaw and looked down. Refusing to look at him, I leaned against my hand and allowed my hair to fall around my head, putting a subtle barrier between us. Thomas gave me a smile which I returned half heartedly.

“Now, I’ve asked you both here to discuss an idea with you both that was suggested by one of our teachers.”

We waited silently for him to proceed.

He continued. “I talked it over with the staff and we are all in agreement that this May we shall have a dance for all upperclassmen. Lead and organized by you two.”

My eyebrows shot right up. “I’m sorry, come again, sir?”

“I know it seems like a lot, but I will give you all the information regarding bands, our budget and decorations. It will be up to you to decide the theme and how everything will be held.”

Scorpius cleared his throat. “Are you sure you want us to handle this?”

“Yes Mr. Malfoy. If my colleague had pitched this idea the summer prior to this term, I wouldn’t have been so sure, but I’m actually very proud of you two. I thought you two would be feuding this whole year and was hesitant to pair you two together but I haven’t received so much as a complaint about your union.”

I scowled. Wrong choice of words…

The Professor looked at us both. “Now, I know this is a heavy burden, but I also know both of you are up for the challenge. We think this will raise the spirits around here.”

What could we say? What could I say? No? Sorry Professor, but he just ripped out my heart and shred it to a million pieces and I don’t really want to spend more time with him that it’s necessary? No, I couldn’t say that. So what to do? I sucked it up, gave him a fake smile and said I would do it.

“Good,” The Headmaster smiled at the two of us handing Scorpius a file. “This is all the information so far. Any other updates will be owled to you. Now I think you both are late to your next classes, so I will owl them to let them know where you two are.”

I frowned, Professor Finch wouldn’t be happy. “Yes Sir.”

“Off you go.”

I got up and headed for the doorway bitterly. Great. Just freaking fantastic. I bolted down the stairs, knowing that if I moved fast enough he would just disappear. I didn’t think he would catch up with me and I was right. I went down the staircase and almost ran to Muggle Studies. When I walked in, I walked towards a seat in the back, but instead of gracefully walking to the seat, someone made the decision to stick their foot out and trip me. I, of course being exhausted and out of it, didn’t use my fast Quidditch enhanced reflexes and plummeted right into the floor. If it wasn’t bad enough that I was humiliated for showing up late and falling on my face, I managed to fall right on the bruise Zach gave me the day before.  I let out a low groan of pain as I clutched my side and squeezed my eyes shut before forcing myself to stand up. Adam gave me an arm up and I went to sit next to him and Paul Rodriguez. Professor Finch sent me one of her patented I’m-never-going-get-laid-again-so-will-torture-you-for-not-doing-exactly-what-you-should-be-doing. I rolled my eyes and pulled some parchment, a quill and a bottle of ink. I didn’t remember what we were reading. I had already read the whole reading list, so I didn’t really pay attention to where we were.

“Miss Weasley?”

“Yes?” I stared back at her uncaringly. “What can I do for you Professor Finch?”

She hated me. Ever since in 3rd I pointed out to her that Muggles don’t read books on trains because they know how to ride them. Because apparently she loved teaching magical born kids about trains and planes even though most of us had a general idea of how they worked and thought it was boring as hell.

“What is the name of the protagonist’s husband?”

My tan skin paled slightly and my brown eyes narrowed. “Don’t remember.”

“Okay class,” She shrieked nasally. “You will have a pop quiz on the novel thanks to your,” She paused to give me a cutting glance, “Lovely classmate.”

I glowered at her as she passed out quizzes and everyone around me whimpered. She handed me a quiz acidly. “Here,”

I gave her a disdainful, forced grin. “Thank you.”

I looked down at my paper and saw the title and laughed under my breath.

The Scarlett Letter Quiz #1

I snorted, “Figures.”

“You should really ice that bruise Weasley,” Adam grimaced as I lifted up the bottom of my blouse to check out my bruise in the hallway.

I nodded, “I know. I’ll do it after transfig.”

His tan skin wrinkled as he gave me a worried glance.

“Canfield I’m fine.” I told him dismissively. “Thank you, but I’ll be alright.”

“Okay…” He frowned, “It was really bitchy of Bethany to do that.”

I stopped walking and my face grew dark. “Bethany tripped me?”

“Yeah…She saw you coming and she just-“

“What-a-cow!”

Adam didn’t refute it. “You’re not going to go all Carrie on her are you?”

An example of a socially outcast teenage girl, Carrie White; who discovers she possesses telekinesis powers, which seems to flare up when she becomes angry. Carrie's powers become apparent after her humiliation by her peers and she attacks them. I gotta love Adam for the muggle reference. Maybe pouring blood on Bethany would make her less of a bitch. I shook my head, even that was too good for her. I couldn’t believe Zooey was best friends with her. It came completely out of nowhere and still I see her everyday walking and laughing with that ….little troll.

Adam adjusted his bag and I could see that he had a vague idea of what I was thinking. “Rose?”

“No, I’m not…though it is tempting.”

“You’re weird,” He smiled softly.

We trudged down the stairwell while I shrugged in response. “Yeah…So are you and Leighton…?”

His face broke into a huge grin. “I’m working on it.”

“Ah.”

He went in front of me and opened the door for me.

“Thanks,” I said to him before we separated him to sit with Albus and Tyler, me to sit with Leighton, Annabella and Livi.

Leighton made a disgusted sound and I gave her an odd look. “What’s up?”

“Test,” was all Leighton said. It was enough to give me a migraine.

Professor Cabot has been the transfiguration teacher since McGonagall became Headmaster twenty five years ago, and she’s been head of Slytherin for the past twenty years since Slughorn left. She wasn’t a snide woman, but to call her kind would have been a stretch of imagination. Cabot liked to assign us heavy amounts of homework and then, out of nowhere, write on the board that we had a test that day. So, I stared at her messy cursive writing on the board and got out my quill and ink.

“Well Leighton,” I said slowly, “At least we know there won’t be one on Monday.”

Livi made a noise of disagreement from the corner she was slumped in. “Yeah. I wouldn’t put it past the old bat to stick us with two tests in a five day period.” She then moved on to stare at Leighton. “So, what’s with up you and Canfield? I saw you snogging the other day.”

“Yeah well that happens,” Leighton responded surprisingly calm. “But to answer your very subtle and considerate question-“I laughed loudly at her side but she continued, “We have our first date tonight.”

“He’s a good guy.” I nodded approvingly. Livi moved in for more information.

“So,” Livi said with a grin. “Is he a good snogger?”

“Livi!” I laughed harder. “Could you possibly not be so nosy?”

Livi lowered her voice and leaned forward as her grin grew more evil. “Oh don’t pretend you don’t want to know missy! Answer the question Leighton.”

Leighton rolled her eyes. “Yes, alright?”

“Yes, he’s a good snogger or was he a- if-I’d-had-five-more-minutes-my-knickers-would-have-been-on-the-floor?”

Leighton never got the chance to reply to Livi’s lovely question, because at that moment the tests appeared on each one of our desks and Professor Cabot walked out of her study and into the classroom, dressed in her usual basic black.

“You have fifty minutes, I want silence for sixty.” She told us sternly before sitting in her chair.

It took me fifteen minutes to get through the test and double check everything. I knew she’d hand out more homework and that would be the extent of the rest of this class. Everyone else was taking their test except for one person, Scorpius. Like me he was a quick test taker. Since he was facing forward with his eyes on the floor, I freely stared at him. His face held no emotion, but I could tell what he was thinking by the expression in his eyes. The one place he had to fight to control. I didn’t know how he felt about me at this point, but I was beginning to think he didn’t really hate me. Maybe I was being naïve and just wishing that that was true, but there was something about the way he fought with me. Why would he have gone so direct to hatred so quickly? I had to either confront him or let it go. I couldn’t keep doing this to myself. It was pathetic to cling onto something if it never going to work out. Shifting my gaze I rubbed my eyes and clutched my empty stomach.

“Professor?” I asked walking up to her desk. “I’m finished with my test. Can I use the bathroom?”

She eyed me carefully, as if looking for signs of deceit. When she found me innocent she gave me a curt nod. “Go.”

I headed straight for the kitchens. I hadn’t eaten properly in days and I was suddenly starving.  I tickled the pear like James had shown me my first year and went in. There were hundreds of house elves working so I just took a seat and waited for one of them to notice me. Finally one did. She curtsied and smiled at me.

“How can Addy help you miss?”

“I was wondering…if you’re not too busy could I have some food?”

She gave me a happy smile. “Of course miss. What would you like?”

“Chicken tenders, french fries, carrots, pumpkin juice and bowl of strawberry ice cream please.”

Yes, I like to eat enough food that could feed a small army. Please judge me. I encourage it. It took me fifteen minutes to get through all the food, and ten to feel well enough to leave. My appetite was back with a fury and I liked it. Coming back into class I saw a lot of people were still taking the test. I smiled and rested my head on my desk until the bell rang. When it did Livi let out a loud sigh of relief. Zack came over to our table.

“Rose, can I have a word?”

I shrugged and followed him outside. “Are you going to ask me to Hogsmeade?”

“Yes but not for the reason you’d think.” He led me away to a secluded corner. “I like someone.”

“Okay…?”

He let out a sharp breath of frustration. “But I don’t want anybody to know.”

“Scouts honor,” I held up to fingers in salute. “Now who is it?”

Rosalie….

My eyebrows shot up as my jaw opened, “Rosalie Nott?” My voice was a hushed whisper.

“Yeah…”

“Wow.”

He scratched his forehead. “But she doesn’t think it would be a good idea so I was wondering if you’d like ….”

“Help you make her jealous?” I suggested knowingly.

“No actually. I just noticed you were the only one that didn’t have a date-“

I scowled, “Thank you for rubbing it in.”

“I didn’t mean it like that.” He sighed angrily, “I just meant that we both don’t have anything better to do so why not go together?”

He made it sound like a business arrangement but I went along with it. Better than getting Charlie’s treats by myself. “Where do you want to meet?”

“Outside the Great Hall?”

I let out a weird little laugh. “Yeah fine.”

“Hey we’ll make it fun!” He wrapped his arm around my shoulder. “We can make fun of all the other couples.”

“Yes! My dream, my fantasy!” I mocked him overdramatically.

“I know it is!”

I gave him a weary glance before giving in. “Fine, but if we don’t, I have permission to kick your ass.”

“Deal!”

He walked me to my common room portrait hole as we talked freely. Being with Zack was so easy. It was so effortless. I didn’t have worry about anything. I found myself wishing that we were actually going on a date tonight. Too bad we both had feelings for other people, but that’s just the way the world works, isn’t it?

“So I don’t need to dress up do I?” I asked him cringing.

He snorted. “Just don’t look like you fell out of bed and I’ll do you the same courtesy.”

“Thanks.”

He reached over and pulled me into a hug.

I laughed, “I’ll see you later.”

I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings. I was too happy. Yeah it wasn’t a real date but who cared? I got to spend a night with a good friend of mine instead of sulking in my room. It was a weird kind of happiness but I wasn’t going to question it. I was about to take a step onto my staircase when Scorpius came out of nowhere and put an arm out to stop me.

I hadn’t seen him this close in days and I was a little glad. Up close I could see dark circles under his eyes and the disheveled state of his hair. He looked a wreck…A sexy wreck…Before I could ask what he wanted his eyes silenced me with their intensity. I hadn’t seen this side of him in what felt like forever. My body tensed as goose bumps rose where his muscular arm touched my skin.

“You’re acting like a slut.” He remarked darkly.

“Oh really?” I crossed my arms over my chest. “How am I doing that?”

“Snogging that kid-“

“I did what?”

He moved even closer, his teeth gritted together and his eyes staring directly into my own. “Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about.”

It was hard not to snog him right there but luckily the anger his bitterness sparked in me overcastted that need. “I didn’t snog anyone.”

“I heard your little friend ask you how it was!”

I laughed hard, he was jealous. “She was talking about Leighton! Leighton who was snogging Adam!”

He backed away slightly and shifted his eyes away from me. “Oh. My mistake.”

It was my turn to stop him. I stuck my arm out, “Why would that bother you anyway? You made it perfectly clear the other day that you don’t care what I do.”

“Like I said,” He gave me a cold glare and muttered, “My mistake,” before disappearing up his staircase.

I went up the stairs to my dorm bitterly. Once I got inside, I iced my bruise as I promised I would and then I proceeded to get ready for Hogsmeade. I wasn’t going to let that asshole stop me from doing anything. Grabbing the letters out of my bag, I stuffed them into the box and shoved it into a dark corner under my bed, hoping it would be the last time I’d look at them again.

“Wow,” Zack murmured as we got into a carriage. “You didn’t have to go all out…”

I gave him a weird look. I was just wearing jeans and a red long sleeved v-neck. “I didn’t...”

“What did you do then?”

“I showered, tamed my hair and covered up the dark circles under my eyes.”

He smiled. “Well it worked wonders. You looked exhausted all day and you look...”

I sighed, “You know I hope you don’t talk to your girlfriend that way because we all don’t love to hear that we looked like crap for the past few hours and had to perform a miracle to look nice….That’s just me.”

“I just keep insulting you today…” He laughed guiltily.

“Just use your head next time. Ask yourself,” I raised my hands as if they were scales, “Is this going to get me a smile,” I raised my right hand, “Or is it going to get my ass kicked,” I lowered my left hand.

“You can’t do that,” He said knowingly, “Albus would kill you.”

I rolled my eyes. “The last person I’d be afraid of is my dear cousin.”

He helped me out of the carriage and we walked around for a little bit. We hit Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes first. I got a few little toys for Charlie to play with and a few little things for myself. Of course being a Weasley I just flashed a smile at the manager and got it for free. Zack gave me a teasing glare as he had to pay for his own stuff.

A few minutes later after exiting Honeydukes with our goods, we were laughing and eating my shape changing cotton candy. “Hey some people get rich and famous parents…I just happen to have a rich and famous family.”

“Oh that makes it sound so much better.” He drawled out sarcastically.

“Well come on Zack there’s got to be some disadvantages to being oh what was it? Oh yeah,” I lightly hit my forehead. “You’re father is the head of Magical Transportation.”

He shoved me jokingly. “Yeah yeah. I can leave the country without problems but that also means my dad could track my ass down.”

“Well good thing you’re a good kid.” I mocked squishing his cheeks.

He swatted my hand away and threw his arm around my shoulders. “Come on. Let’s go to Spintwitches.”

We spent a good hour marveling over all the new Quidditch sporting equipment. “I bet Albus has been begging his father for the new keeper goggles...Look how sweet these are!” I exclaimed admirably.

“Have you seen these chaser gloves? I would love to see Slythern try and make me drop the quaffle while I’m wearing these babies!”

I laughed in agreement as we left the shop.

“I’m starving how about you?”

I nodded, “Yeah let’s get some dinner.”

We wandered into the Three Broomsticks and sat in the back so we could put our bags in the empty seats. “I’m sooo tired.” Zack groaned putting his legs on the chair in front of him. “And hungry.”

I grabbed a menu and threw the other one at him. “Here, take a look.”

“Would you think less of me if I ate everything on the menu?”

I snorted. “If you literally ate everything on the menu.”

“What are you going to get?”

“Um…Rotisserie Smoked Chicken, roasted potatoes and cider.” The food appeared on my plate instantly and I smiled appreciatively. “You?”

He yawned and pursed his lips in thought. “Chargrilled Ribs, roasted corn and a lemonade.” His food appeared and a huge grin spread across his grateful face. “Yesss!”

We finished eating quickly and left the three broomsticks. Zack suddenly stopped as we passed Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop. “Oh please tell me you don’t want to go in ther-!” I started disgustedly only to lose my voice at the sight of Rosalie Nott kissing Dan Davies. “Oh Zack-“

“Don’t worry about it.” He forced a smile on his face but it didn’t reach his eyes. “I’m fine.”

I gently grabbed his arm. “Come on Zack. It’s not healthy to watch.”

“How could she do this?” He asked faintly once we made it into the square.

I sighed and sat with him on a bench. “Did she say it was over?”

“Yeah but…I know she didn’t mean it.”

“I’m sorry Zack.” I hugged his arm comfortingly with mine. “I know people always say they understand and have no idea what they’re talking about, but I actually know exactly how you feel.”

He furrowed his eyebrows at me. “What do you mean?”

“I was dating someone for a month behind everyone’s back….”

“What happened?”

I frowned remorsefully. “I screw it up. I threw every stereotype I could at him…because I got scared and then when I tried to apologize a few hours later he did a complete one eighty. Like the past few months haven’t happened and we were back to hating each other…It’s hard to even be in the same room with him.”

“You love him, don’t you?”

Why deny it? I just looked at him sadly and he understood. “Look at how happy they all are.” I gestured to all the couples dancing in the middle of the village square. “It almost makes me unhappy to see them so happy.”

“I know what you mean.”

And for a few minutes we just sat there. There were many things we could say that didn’t. I watched as the guys twirled the girls along to the beat and the girls beamed. For once I just wanted to go out on a real live date. A date where I was interested in the guy and he felt the same way about me. A guy that would open the door for me and wasn’t complicated, but then again if I got a guy like that it wouldn’t be Scorpius and I wouldn’t feel half as passionate about him. I glanced at Zack and sensed he needed some time alone. To sort through…everything.

I gave him a bear hug and lingered for a few minutes before letting go. “I’m going to Tomes and Scrolls. I’ll see you back at the castle, alright?”

“Wait,” He stood up quickly, “Are you going to be okay?”

I smiled at him and kissed his cheek. “I’ll be fine. Take care of yourself okay?”

“See you later.”

I nodded and walked away.

I wanted to go to the bookstore, but when I got there I didn’t go in. There was something stopping me and I didn’t know what it was. So instead I just walked around aimlessly. It was getting a little chilly so I rubbed my arms and held them tighter around myself.  Then somehow I managed to walk right into the fence surrounding the Shrieking Shack. I stopped for a moment and leaned against the fence, feeling nostalgic for moments I didn’t experience.

Someone came up behind me and leaned against the fence on my side. I should have spun around and saw who it was, but his scent was strong enough to tell me exactly who it was. “You shouldn’t be out here by yourself.”

“I have my wand on me this time, Scorpius.” I told him indifferently.

“What are you doing over here?”

I could have been a bitch. I could have thrown everything he had said to me in the past few days at his face, but for some reason I didn’t. “It’s weird. I’ve never met Remus Lupin but I know so much about him. He was forced to go in there every full moon and tear it apart. While my uncle father and godfather watched... I know his son Teddy. He’s a good guy…A dumbass for going after my airheaded cousin but a good guy…It’s so sad. He knows a lot about his parents but …He never got to know them.”

He didn’t say anything and all I heard was the wind blowing past us.

“So, why are you here?”

He frowned. “I came to…apologize. It’s…It’s none of my business who you date.”

I looked at him strangely. His jaw twitched when he said that which meant he was lying. “Okay, now why don’t you tell me why you’re really here.”

“What do you mean?”

I scoffed. “Don’t play stupid.” I put more of my weight onto the fence. “You wouldn’t apologize for that and you certainly wouldn’t go out of your way to do it.”

“You know me too well.” He admitted quietly.

“So why are you here?” I asked still not daring to look at him.

I didn’t think he’d answer and I was almost proved right. But as I shifted my weight and prepared to keep walking he spoke up. “I thought I saw someone following you.”

I turned to look his face. Surprised at how honest he looked, I crossed my arms around myself even tighter. “Did you see anyone?”

“Yeah but he disappeared when he saw me.”

“Did you get a look at him?”

He shook his head. “No.”

“Well,” I smiled at him weakly. “Thanks I guess. You didn’t have to do that.”

“I…didn’t mean what I said earlier…You aren’t a slut…”

“Yeah I know that.”

“Which part?”

I half-smirked but didn’t answer. My hair was flying freely in the wind. “Well, I’m fine so you can go on and do whatever you were doing.” I looked over at him and saw he was having difficulty leaving. “Scorpius just go.”

“I don’t want this…”

I scoffed and gave him an angry smile. “Yeah you made that clear the other day.”

“No I didn’t mean that….” Scorpius tucked in his bottom lip and looked at me like I was interrogating him. “I mean I didn’t want to hurt you…I didn’t want it to end.”

I gave him a look. “Then why did you do it? I know I played my part but what happened on your end?”

“I’m not right for you… This could end very badly.”

“So we just give up? Forget everything?” I boldly turned and starred at him. “That might have been easy for you but it’s not easy for me.”

He pulled me toward him seething. “You think this is easy for me?!”

“Well then please explain what you’re feeling because you’ve been an emotionless prick for the past few days leaving me to believe you couldn’t be bothered!”

“Well I clearly care! Do you have any idea how hard it is to ignore you? I have almost every fucking class with you, I have to talk to you about the prefects constantly and oh yeah we share a common room together!”

I got closer to his face. “Well at least you can have the pride and satisfaction of knowing its mutual!”

He looked down at my lips and I could feel the tension between us build, until it felt like I was fighting a magnetic pull to not kiss him. I could hear my own heart beat faster and faster as we stared into each other’s eyes longingly. Oh hell! I broke. When his lips took hold of mine I was gone. Gone. Then all of a sudden he pulled away and apologized.

“We shouldn’t have done that…” He glanced at me. “I’ll see you later.”

Leaving me in a state of disbelief.
