~Beginning of the First day of Hogwarts~
I woke up to squinting my eyes someone opened the shades. I cursed at the sun and threw the blankets over my head. I didn’t sleep well last night, I felt a little homesick and I didn’t finish unpacking until 12 o’clock am. I blinked again and realized that someone was in the shower and that was what woke me. I looked around the room to see who it was; there were two empty beds and another girl still sleeping. There were only five girls in my year. So far I only met Mary who had dirty blonde hair and was average size and thin and another girl named Jenna who had dark brown hair and was short and thin. The other two girls disappeared, and came back late that night. The shower stopped and Mary came out of the bathroom.
“Hey sleepy head, you should probably get dressed or you are going to miss breakfast,” she said in a singsong voice. I groaned and threw the blankets over my head. I was not a morning person.
“But it’s so early!” I whined while throwing the blankets off my head and getting out of bed.
“It’s not that early,” She said while putting on her new uniform.
“What time is it?”
“It’s about six thirty,” she said like it was no big deal.
“What!” I screamed while going in my bed and throwing the covers over my head.
“That’s not late!” I screamed, but it was muffled from the covers.
“Come on Lily, I cannot possible go to breakfast by myself the first day,” she said while rolling her eyes. I debated for a moment, but decided that I was probably not going to sleep again. I rolled out of bed and got my towel and bathroom supplies while heading towards the bathroom.
“I’m taking a shower first,” I said before shutting the bathroom door. I could just hear the muffled laughter from Mary in the other room. When I got into the bathroom I locked the door and brushed my teeth and took a shower. After my shower I got dressed in my new school uniform, which was a grey long skirt, black robes with a Gryffindor symbol on it, white button up shirt, and a red and gold tie. I looked myself over once in the mirror, while fixing my hair a little. Then I walked out the door and into the dormitory. I walked over to Mary and tapped her on the shoulder.
“Finally!” she said while throwing the magazine she was reading onto the bed.
“You take forever!” she got up and starting pulling me to the door.
“I do not!”
“It’s seven thirty,” she said to me.
“Breakfast starts at eight,”
“Same difference,” she said while pulling me through the common room and out the porthole. Mary stopped outside, and turned to me.
“Do you remember where the Great Hall is?”
“I think it is down these staircases and down a corridor,” I said.
“Are you sure?” she asked.
“Positive,” I said back to her, and we started walking.
~1 hour later~
“What happened to down the stairs and around the corner!” Mary yelled from behind me.
“You believed me! If you couldn’t remember how was I supposed too?” I yelled back. We came to a four way cross in the hallways. I looked down each corridor and picked the hallway to the left.
“Lily that is the fourth turn you made, we are going in a circle,” Mary whined.
“Mary I don’t need you yelling at me right now, besides I haven’t seen you pick a direction yet,”
“That’s because you won’t let me!” she protested.
“Yes I am,” I said back to her.
“No, last time I suggested a hallway you said ‘No it is definitely this way’,” She said while mimicking my voice.
“Fine then, you pick a direction,” I said while motioning her to go in front of me.
“Finally,” she said while walking in front of me and taking charge. I walked behind her unwillingly. About ten minutes later we reached the Great Hall. Mary turned to me.
“You should have just let me lead the way in the first place,” she said while walking into the Great Hall.
“You are the one who asked me for directions Mary,” I said back while following her. Mary didn’t answer, and walked to the end of the Gryffindor table. The table was packed, and there were only a few seats at the end that were still opened. As we approached the table I saw Potter, Sirius, Remus, and some boy that resembled a mouse sitting at the end of the table and the only open seats next to them. I sat down unwillingly next to Sirius who was across from Potter and Mary took the seat across from me. Remus was next to Potter, and Sirius was next to the boy that resembled a mouse on the other side. When we sat down Sirius and Potter were having a competition to see who could stuff the most pancakes into their mouths. Syrup was dripping down their chins, and their cheeks looked like chipmunk cheeks. When Potter saw me sit down he smiled, and all the pancakes came falling from his mouth.
“Ha! I win!” Sirius tried to say, but ended up choking mid sentence on his pancakes. Potter started laughing, while Remus just shook his head at them. Potter looked over to me.
“Where’s Snape,” He said in an annoying voice.
“Don’t you mean where’s Snivellus?” Sirius said back.
“Potter don’t make fun of him, or you will regret it,” I said in a cold tone.
“Oooo,” Sirius and Potter chanted in sync.
“You said that last night too,” Sirius said.
“Yeah, what are you going to do,” Potter said. I could see they were ganging up in me.
“It’s too early to be fighting,” Remus cut in.
“It’s too early to be reading,” Sirius said back.
“It’s never too early to start reading,” Remus said while going back to reading.
“Yeah it is, Peter don’t you agree it’s too early to start reading,” Sirius said to the boy that I find resembles a mouse. Peter looked up and looked back and forth between me, Remus, and Sirius.
“Y-y-yeah way t-too early,” He stuttered while looking back down at his breakfast.
“I knew you were alright,” Sirius said while patting Peter on the back.
“Sirius, shut up,” Remus said.
“Why?” Sirius said while looking at Remus, Remus was about to answer, but Potter cut in.
“Bloody hell, mums already sent me a letter,” he said while looking up. I looked up to see an owl flying down to our table. The owl landed right in front of Potter and gave him a letter, which was in the owl’s mouth. The owl turned its head to me and hissed.
“What does it say?” Sirius asked.
“Just asking what house I’m in, and how my first day is going,” Potter said while shrugging.
“Awww Jamsie, still checks in with his parents,” Sirius said in a voice used to talk to babies in, and pinched Potter’s cheek. Sirius started laughing, while Potter slapped him off the top of his head and continued reading his letter. Potter’s owl looked very familiar. I watched as it pecked at Potter’s breakfast. The owl then turned to me and hissed again when I tried to grab some pancakes. Suddenly I realized why this owl looked so familiar.
“Oi Potter is your owl,” I said slowly trying to contain my anger.
“Why do you only call him by his last name? I want to be called by my last name too, Black,” Sirius whined. I shot him a glare and focused my attention on Potter.
“Yeah, why?” He asked, I just threw my hands up and banged them on the table.
“You have got to be kidding me,” I said in and annoyed tone and the owl hissed at me again.
“Shut it you stupid owl!” I screamed.
“Hey! Evans, stop yelling at my owl!” Potter whined.
“That bloody bird bit my finger when I tried to send my Hogwarts letter,” I said while staring down the owl, he hissed when I said letter. I opened myself too hiss back, but thought better of it.
“Evans this is the nicest owl ever it loves everyone. That’s why the ministry uses it to send letters. Isn’t that right angel?” Potter said while patting the owl.
“Angel, are you kidding me. You should nickname that bird Malice,” As soon as I said that, the owl pooped on my plate and whipped me with its tail feathers.
“I’ve had it with this owl! I’m leaving, I’ll see you in class Mary,” I said while getting up too leave.
“Hey, what about us!” Potter screamed after me.
“What about you,” I asked.
“Don’t I get a see you in class,”
“I doubt you have the same classes as me Potter,”
“Actually, the opposite, we have all the same classes,” he said and I turned back to the table.
“What?” I asked.
“We have all the same classes,”
“What!” I screamed.
“Jeez Evans didn’t you hear him, we have all the same classes,” Black said annoyed.
“Shut it Black,” I shot at him, and with that I left the Great Hall. Before I left I heard Sirius yell, ‘She called me Black!’ followed by ‘Sirius that isn’t a good thing.’ I walked back to the common room and went to my room. I sat on my bed for a few minutes looking over my schedule for the day, and then I packed up my bag and waited for Mary too come back. I started thinking about what Potter said. ‘As long as I don’t have to sit near him in any of my classes, I will be fine,’ I told myself in my head. I reassured myself that he wouldn’t have to sit next to me in any of my classes, besides they would probably sit us by last names and P and E are far apart. Just then Mary walked in.
“How was the rest of breakfast,” I asked her as I watched her get all of her school stuff.
“Good,” She said to me and I saw a smile on her face.
“What happened?” I asked her, a little scared too her answer.
“I’ll tell you tonight, but we have to get too class first!” she said while walking towards the door and without a word I followed.
~ First Period ~
“Hello, and welcome to Defense Against the Dark Arts. My name is Professor McGonagall and I will be your teacher in this subject for the next few years. Now would you all please line up against the wall so that I can seat you in your assigned seats,” Everyone in the class walked to the wall and lined up. I stood next to Mary.
“I hope we sit next to each other,” I whispered to Mary.
“Me too,” She replied.
“Alright I am going to put you in order from your first names, Alison Franklin and Caitlin Clash sit right here,” McGonagall said while pointing to the first desk to the left. I watched as two took their seats in the far left hand corner, these two girls also shared a common room with me Mary and another girl named Jenna.
“Next we have Daniel Gibson and Ilia Long,” McGonagall said, it was getting closer and closer to my name, L.
“Right here we have James Potter and Lily Evans,” She said while tapped her hand on one table. Just one table, not two separate table, one joined table. I looked over at Mary and walked to my new seat. Potter had already sat down and he was holding back a laugh when I sat down.
“Potter, I really don’t need this right now,” I said to him.
“I didn’t say anything!” he complained.
“Your doing enough just by sitting next to me and breathing,”
“Come on, I’m not that bad…looking,” he said while raising his eyebrows up and down and tilting his glasses.
“Potter you are so full of yourself,”
“I know, you can either take me the way I am or not at all,” He said while tilting his seat back. I pushed one edge of the chair with my foot and it tipped over.
“I won’t take you either way,” I said while turning and facing the front.
“What is going on over there?” Professor McGonagall yelled from the back of the classroom.
“Lily pushed me out of my chair!” Potter complained while rubbing his shoulder to look more dramatic. I looked at him and rolled my eyes; I then shifted my gaze to Professor McGonagall and put on an innocent face.
“I didn’t do it Professor, I was just sitting here and all of the sudden James was on the floor,”
“What!” James said.
“Enough of you Mr. Potter,” She said while turning to the chalkboard.
“But I didn’t do anything…”
“That is enough Potter detention,” She yelled.
“For what!” He yelled.
“Talking without raising your hand,”
“5 points from Gryffindor and that is the final word,” Professor McGonagall yelled, James slugged back into his seat and started laughing to himself.
He looked over to me, “Well played,” was all I heard, and then class began. The rest of class consisted of Potter annoying me, and Black flicking little paper balls at my head. At one point during class I gathered all of the paper balls Black threw at me and chucked them all at him at once, Professor McGonagall then gave Black a detention too. By the end of first period Black and Potter had received a total of two detentions each and lost us 10 points from Gryffindor. If this was only first period, I couldn’t imagine the rest of the day.
~End of Classes~
Black and Potter had received six detentions total and lost us 20 points for Gryffindor; at this rate we were doomed for the House Cup. Not only were they the stupidest human beings alive, but they were also the most annoying. The entire day they made fun of me and annoyed me. By dinner, I had enough of them.
“Oi Evans, you going to eat those potatoes?” Potter asked me while pointing too my plate.
“Yeah that’s why I put them on my plate you tosspot,” I said annoyed.
“Language Evans,” Black said with fake outrage.
“I don’t really care you ignorant prat,” I spat at Black.
“Jeez Evans, what’s gotten into you?” Potter asked.
“What has gotten into me? You two have been annoying me all day can’t you give it a rest!”
“I don’t remember annoying you.” Black said.
“You were flicking little paper balls at my head for two hours! How could you not remember that?” I yelled at him.
“I don’t know, I guess I just got lost in your eyes,” He said while starring intensely at me.
“Oi Sirius are you serious,” Potter said while smacking Black on the head.
“Actually I am Sirius,” He said while smiling at Potter.
“Black that line doesn’t even make sense,” I said.
“Of course not,” He replied while shoving more mashed potatoes into his mouth.
“Boys are so stupid,” I said in a low voice.
“Hey, we are not boys we are men!” Potter said while slamming his fists on the table.
“I can’t take it anymore, I’m leaving!” I said my voice getting louder with each word.
“Inside voices Evan’s, shhh,” Sirius said.
“Yeah Evan’s you don’t need to talk louder to get Snivellus to notice you,” Potter said, I turned back around and looked Potter straight in the eye.
“Potter I don’t like him like that, he is my best friend,” I said.
“Sure,” Was all he said.
“Why do you keep bringing him up anyway Potter, are you jealous that he is my friend or something?”
“What no, why would you think that? Me jealous, absolutely not,” He said his voice getting high pitched.
“Sure Potter.” I said and I left the Great Hall. I walked back up to the common room annoyed with my entire day. Did I really say last night that today was going to be a good day? This has probably been the worst day of my life. First I discovered that Potter’s owl was the same owl that delivered my Hogwarts letter, second I found out that I had all the same classes with Potter. To top that off I found out that I also had to sit next to Potter in all of those classes and got lost to every class I went too today. Overall it was just one of the worst first days of school ever. Mary walked in and walked over to my bed, she took a seat on the edge of it.
“Do you want to know what I’m so happy about now?” she asked me, I sat up.
“Yeah what is it!” Maybe what she was about to tell me would make my worst day ever better.
“Sirius Black asked me out at breakfast!” she shrieked. No such luck for me.
“Are you kidding me, why Sirius,” I said while shoving my head into my pillow.
“What do you like him or something?” she asked.
“Complete opposite, I hate him. He is annoying prat who only cares about himself. I mean you saw what they did in class right?” I said while looking at her sad face.
“Yeah it’s ok Lily, I understand. How about I set you up with James then it won’t be so bad!”
“Mary I cannot believe you just said that, I would never go out with Potter, be nice to Potter, or be friends with Potter,” I said while grabbing my pajamas and walking towards the bathroom.
“I’m sorry Mary, but it has just been a horrible day,” And with that I walked into the bathroom. Ten minutes later I came out and went to bed, I just wanted this day too be over so badly. I closed my eyes tightly shut until I fell asleep and convinced myself for a better day tomorrow.
~Over View of First and Second Year~
This pattern of Black and Potter annoying me continued all throughout first year and second year, every day was a bad day in some way or another. Mary dated Black for two days, and then discovered that he was seeing three other girls already. Mary had become one of my best friends by the end of first year, but I hung out with Sev more than her still. Potter and Black continued to make fun of Sev, but as the months carried on, I learned more spells. Potter and Black couldn’t just make fun of Sev and I without getting their buts kicked. Over the years Potter, Black, Remus, and Peter created a group called the Marauder’s and gave each other nicknames. Potter was known as Prongs, Sirius was known as Padfoot, Remus was known as Moony, and Peter was Wormtail. I tried my best to ignore this group, but Potter and Black were so persistent on annoying me, but I wasn’t the only one, they annoyed everyone especially Slytherins, but I never took any of their rubbish without fighting back, or getting even. The only difference between me and the Marauders was that I never got caught in. Although as third year came along they brought their annoyance to a whole new level especially Potter.
_______________________________________________________________________A/N: Third year is where it all happens. I didn’t feel the need to have to include the second year because it was basically the same as first year, but I will be staying in third year and fourth year for a while because most of my ideas happen during those years. If you guys couldn’t tell, I have a really hard time ending chapters. Thank you too my beta thebrightsideofsiriusblack and thank you to all who read and commented on my last chapter, I’m really looking forward to your feedback on this chapter!
