Chapter One – Lots of Lasts
My name is Arabella Singer, and from the outside I have the easiest life in the world. My four best friends are the most popular guys in the school, my grades surpass the highest ranking in the last decade, I'm the single best seeker in the last century and am chased by every single guy in the school. To bad life requires balance which means my picture perfect life, isn't so picture perfect.
Seven years ago I had something magical happen, my favorite book, Harry Potter. came to life. In one day I found out that I was adopted into a squib family who hated everything magical, and was actually part of the well known Singer family who had died at the hand of Lord Voldemort a few years after I was born. My parents didn't hesitate in telling me, it was muggle life or magic, I chose magic.
I imagine your a muggle if your reading this, you have read about Harry Potter, cried when Dobby died, and all but threw the book across the room when Fred was murdered. Well heres the twist, all that, its true, or it will be one day. That amazing book, was written by an a seer using a fake name. It was enchanted so no witch or wizard could know of it, however, so far there are two exceptions to that rule. Me and who else but the famous Albus Dumbledore, no surprise really, is there anything that man can't do?
So Headmaster Dumbledore shows up at my house telling me about this amazing life, gets me kicked out of my home because of it, and then lets me know that if I ever tried to tell a magical person, I would pass out. Which lead to a very embarrassing rumor in my first year about an eating disorder. However, I pretty much have that controlled now, sometimes its even possible to forget about the books.
This however, doesn't change the fact that my life is a series of lies and as far as my friends know, I have crazy rich parents who travel the world at random, I go and stay at James's house for a few weeks during the summer and then just hang out at Hogwarts the rest of the year, in reality every summer I rented a hotel room and hang out with my best muggle friend Sam who is currently the only person in the world who knows the story from start to finish. Lucky for me the guys have been preoccupied first with Pad's Life, then we found out Remmy's a wear-wolf and now there drooling over girls. So I don't really have to worry about them discovering my secret.
So This is where I am at, the letter for school just arrived and shortly after that one from Lily exclaiming that she had made head girl. At the start of my schooling I had hoped I would be made head girl someday, but alas, the boys made sure I didn't not to mention it was prophosized that Lily would get it, stupid Hagrid. Now I was packing up to head over to the Potters for the last week of summer vacation, his parents knew what was happening in my life to a degree, but I had them swear secrecy.
You must think I am odd keeping such a secret from my best friends, I mean most people love the attention they get when something goes wrong in their life and to get the support. Well for me its the opposite. I don't appreciate people meddling in my life because it ends up with me in tears and very angry it also sucks that if I tell them one half, it could lead to questions about the other half, the half I couldn't tell them if I wanted to. But none of this matters because this is probably close to my last year with them. After this we'll all join the Order of The Phoenix, and then most everyone will die. Happy life I have isn't it?
A knock sounded from the door and Sam bounced in her blonde hair flying out behind her.
“O-hi!”
“Hey Sam” I laughed “Come to help me pack I assume?”
“Yeah...” her eyes drifted over to my bed where my broom was sitting. I tossed her the cleaning kit and she sat down happily polishing the handle and trimming the tail.
“So you excited for your last year?” she asked looking up.
“I guess... I wish it wasn't the last though” I shook my head sadly.
“Will you be coming back next year?”
“Maybe for a bit, depends what happens with the order you know”
“I still can't believe that this is all actually happening, you'll be careful though right? You know what happens to most of those characters... uh people”
“Yeah I know Sam, I'll make sure I stay safe, maybe I can help the others too” I still hadn't fully given up the hope that I can change the prophecy.
“Maybe” Sam replied halfheartedly, we both knew it was impossible.
Two hours later I was completely packed and ready to head to the Potters. We headed down to the local floo. Due to the fact that there were hardly any magical students that lived in Canada the Ministry had put in a general floo connection in on of the companies. The YMCA or the Young Magical Connection Association was happy to put in a connection in the basement of their buildings.
There were many tears and promises to keep well before I stepped into the green flames.
“POTTER MANOR”
The room and Sam spun away as I was whisked passed fireplace after fireplace until I was deposited into the Potters. I was greeted by the delicious smell of a home cooked meal, the sound of Mrs. Potter arguing with the house elf about who should cook the food and too guys.
“Shes here!” I heard as I stepped out to dust myself off.
“Go Padfoot Go!” Next thing I knew I was flying through the air as Pad tackled me to the ground and Prongs joined the brawl. Even Prongs father, Chris, joined in until Aya, his mother, told us to break it up though fits of laughter. We followed Aya into the kitchen were the house elf, Milly, was setting the table. Milly and Aya gave each other a polite smile but stuck their tongues out childishly once they thought no one was watching. I stifled a giggle as I sat between the two boys.
“Aya this looks amazing” I commented looking around enthusiastically “But how in the name of Merlin are we going to eat it all?” The food was literally suspended in the air to make room for more.
She just laughed “Haven't you seen James and Sirius eat”
“Very true”
“Hey” Pad pointed an accusing finger in my direction “She eats more then I do!”
“Me? No...” I grinned
We ate chatting happily and too soon the meats and salads and soups and bread ect... was whisked away and replaced with an even more fantastic when we finally left to go to sleep getting up the stairs was difficult and my pants felt comfortably snug. We parted ways at the top of the stairs heading off to our separate bedrooms. Without bothering to change I crawled in between my newly cleaned sheets sighing happily.
The Potters is definitely the best place on earth, and if you ever get the chance I recommend visiting it. Ever since the unfortunate indecent with my adoptive parents Aya and Chris happily took the role of being my second set of parents, well actually I guess its third set. They are and elderly couple and were lucky just to have James so when I arrived at there doorstep they were more then happy to take care of me even though I wouldn't here of staying all summer when I didn't have to. Sirius might as well be there second son, though at first he had a hard time coping with depending on people, but he has gotten better.
!~!~!~!~!~!
“Shh”
“I'm being quite”
“No your not!”
“SHHH”
I woke up slowly as the voices continued when suddenly there was a WHOOSH and then a scream, I am pretty sure I was screaming probably because I was freezing and wet.
“GUYS!”
“We thought we should wake you” Prongs smiled innocently
“And the lights wouldn't have worked?”
“Thought you might want a shower in bed? You know the whole muggle tradition of Breakfast in bed I thought you might like a different take.”
“Oh ha ha ha.” I tossed my pillow in the direction of their voices.
“Get up were going to play quidditch”
“It's early”
“ARIE”
“I'm coming” I mumbled into my pillow
“What?”
“I'm Coming!”
“Alright, hurry”
I grumbled some more before garbing another pair of shorts and a T-shirt. Before heading in for a quick shower. I ran down the stairs two at a time broomstick in hand, my hair was still wet against my shirt but I saw no real need in using a drying spell.
“Hey, lets go!”
“Got your broom?”
“Yup”
“CYA MUM” The door closed with a bang as we ran down the drive towards the field we used as a pitch just out of town. Matt and Colten were no where to be found so it ended up just being me, Padfoot and Prongs. It was great fun, we raced around the pitch passing a soccer ball, which we kept hidden in a tree, around and trying to learn some of the new tricks James had picked up.
A few hours later Mrs Potter apporated onto the pitch with a basket in hand.
“Hey Kids!”
“Hey mum”
“Hey Mrs. Potter”
“Hullo!”
She laughed “None of you bothered to grab a breakfast or a lunch, so I brought some to you.”
We all flew down and rushed towards her. James gave her a hug and kiss on the cheek. “Thanks mum”
“No problem,” She laughed messing up his already messed hair.
She left quick not wanting to interrupt our fun, though we all tried to make her stay for brunch. The spread she had prepared as amazing, she packed sandwiches and hard-boiled eggs, drinks and a few fruits and veggies. We eat normally a while before making a game of it. One person would go up on there broom and the other two would through food at you, what ever you caught, you got to eat.
I managed to catch the most food, mainly because of my seeker training. And in the end we just used some nuts we found in the bottom of the bag as training for me. I managed to catch all but 4 nuts. However only 10 of the 20 I caught in my mouth.
We turned in at four o'clock. We cleaned up before heading down to help with dinner. I was down last, and came down to see Mrs Potter and a very distressed looking house elf.
“Mrs Potter, please let me make the supper!” The little elf squeaked.
“Oh don't be silly Milly, I can cook just fine” She laughed
“Of course madam, Milly simply wished Madam to rest her feet and let Milly do the work!” The poor thing was working it's self up into a fit.
“Milly you know I like to cook”
“Yes madam! But Milly is your house elf and gladly does your work”
“You can clean up Milly, for now you may go read a book, or something”
The house elf seemed to choke as its eye's go huge “Read?”
“Yes”
“Madam wants Milly to have free time?”
“Sure”
Milly the house elf stumbled off into the house looking about ready to faint. Padfoot and Prongs were laughing so hard they could barley breath. We were shooed out of the kitchen by a grinning Mrs Potter, and told us supper would be out in a giff.
That it was, less extravagant as the previous night but still good. After dinner we retired to the living room where I curled up with a book my legs draped over James and my head resting in Sirius's lap. I was soon lost in the pages, drifting through the words. It was times like these I loved the best.
“Time to head to bed guys” Mrs. Potter announced ruining my peace.
After a chorus of awes the boys stood up unceremoniously dumping me on the floor. The last few weeks at the Potters continued as such, Food, flying, Food, Sleep and somewhere in the middle shopping for supplies, with Wormtail and Moon, oh and at some point we received the letter saying James was Head Boy, oh merlin.
