We were given: Two hands to hold. Two legs to walk. Two eyes to see. Two ears to listen. But why only one heart? Because the other was given to someone else for us to find.-Unknown
“What about him?” Lily said pointing to Andrew Nelson, a seventh year Ravenclaw.
Roxy shook her head and pulled gently on one of her perfect curls. “I dated him last year, he’s an awful kisser.” I rolled my eyes; there isn’t a guy in this school she hasn’t dated at least once.
Lily chewed thoughtfully on her lip and scanned the great hall. They had been trying to agree on a boyfriend for me for twenty minutes. Even if they did agree on someone I wouldn’t date them. I don’t want a boyfriend but they still insist on trying to find me one.
Lex swirled her finger in her pumpkin juice and chewed on a strand of her blonde hair. Her clear blue eyes were dazed and I knew she was in a completely different world. I smiled and nudged her softly. She jumped and snapped out of her daydream.
“What are you thinking about?” I asked.
Lily and Roxy were still searching the crowd. Roxy stared at her perfectly manicured nails and smiled happily. Lily bounced excitedly and suggested possible boyfriends while Roxy came up with a reason why I shouldn’t date him.
Lex shrugged. “Just thinking.”
I laughed. “You had to be thinking about something,” I said with a smile.
Lex was a dreamer. She was quiet, a lot quieter than me. Most people didn’t know she existed but that’s the way she liked it. She liked being invisible. She was completely oblivious to how beautiful she was. She’s way prettier than I am but she doesn’t even know it. She has a child-like innocence. She chooses not to see the bad things in the world.
Lex smiled innocently at me and glanced at Lily and Roxy.
“I agree that you need a boyfriend,” she said. Traitor. I don’t need a boyfriend. I opened my mouth to tell her that but she covered my mouth with her hand and smiled when I glared at her. “But I don’t think they should be choosing for you. I think you’ll find the perfect guy where you least expect it. I think he’s there but you’re overlooking him. Maybe you need to look harder.”
That was helpful.
I rolled my eyes and licked her hand. She quickly took it off of my mouth and wiped it on my robes. “What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked.
She shrugged and stared at me with her big blue eyes in a way that made me feel like she knew something I didn’t. I rolled my eyes. Sometimes Lex makes absolutely no sense but she’s my best friend, I have to love her.
She silently stood up and grabbed my hand. She pulled me to my feet and we snuck away from Lily and Roxy. I linked my arm through Lex’s and we skipped through the crowded corridor. Nobody even glanced at us.
Lex was small, smaller than me which is really saying something. She’s so fragile looking, so breakable. She looked like a little angel made of glass. She looked like she would break at the slightest touch. I was her strength, her protector and had been since I stood up to a group of sixth years for her in first year.
Lex tugged my arm and steered me down a staircase. “We need to go to potions,” she stated when I gave her a questioning glance.
I groaned. “Do I have to?” I whined.
She smiled and laughed. “Yes, you have to.”
I hate her. I hate potions. Maybe I can drop the class. I’m really good at potions, it’s my best subject, and I used to love it. That changed this year when I was partnered with the Devil also known as Scorpius Malfoy.
“I hate potions.” I tried to pull my arm out of hers but she held on tight. She wasn’t going to let me get away.
“No, you hate Scorpius. You love potions.” She smiled and stuck a strand of hair in her mouth.
“How can I not hate Scorpius? He’s so annoying! I hate him and he’s my potions partner therefore I hate potions. He doesn’t do anything but smirk at me and make our potion explode! If he makes me fail I’m going to kill then bring him back so I can kill him again.”
Lex sighed and pulled her hair out of her mouth. “He’s really not as bad as you think he is.”
My jaw dropped and I froze. Has she lost her mind! He’s the worst person to ever walk the earth. He doesn’t even deserve to be alive.
“What is wrong with you?” I screamed at her. “How can you say that?”
She shrugged and tugged on my arm to make me start walking again. “It’s true. He can be really nice when he’s not annoying you.”
I stared at her like she had three heads. She was crazy. Scorpius Malfoy is never nice, never. He loves to torture me and drive me crazy. He’s annoying, immature, arrogant, and self-centered. He is anything but nice.
“I’m not talking to you.” I glared at her and turned my head away from her.
She laughed at me and hugged me. “You know I love you.” She told me.
She stared up at me with her big blue eyes and I couldn’t help but smile and hug her back. She was so angelic looking, so innocent.
“I know. I love you too.”
She smiled at me and grabbed my hand. “We’re going to be late.”
She dragged me down to the dungeons and into the potions classroom. I sighed and reluctantly took my seat beside Scorpius in the back of the classroom. He smirked that awful smirk at me, put his hands behind his head, and put his feet up on the table.
I glared at him.
That smirk never left his face. “Little Rosie was almost late.”
I gritted my teeth and pulled out my potions book. I stared at the page with the potion we were supposed to be making but couldn’t comprehend a single word on it, not with the Devil sitting right next to me.
The devil pulled my ponytail and I slapped his hand away.
“Why are you ignoring me, Rosie?” He pulled my ponytail again.
I was shaking. I refused to look up at him. Ignore him, ignore him and he’ll stop. He poked my shoulder and again pulled my ponytail. If he touches me one more time he’ll be sorry. I glared at him. He smirked calmly at me. Just the sight of him made my blood boil. I can’t stand him! It took all of my self-control to not grab my wand and hex him.
His smirk widened. He was getting to me and he knew it. He knew how badly I wanted to hex him and how infuriating he is. He knows that he drives me crazy and he loves every minute of it. I hate him. I hate him more than anything in the world.
He knocked my book off the table and pulled my hair again.
“Stop pulling my hair!” I yelled at him. The class grew silent and stared at me but I didn’t care. All I could see was the Devil’s smirk. He was enjoying this.
Professor Murray looked back and forth between us nervously. She didn’t know whether she should intervene or not.
I picked up my book and slammed it on the table. Everyone in the room jumped except Scorpius. He just kept smirking at me. I wanted to smack that smirk right off his face.
“Why should I, Rosie?” he asked.
I was about to smack him when Lex slipped her hand quietly in mine. I looked in her wide eyes and instantly calmed down. That’s why we’re friends; she keeps me from doing stupid things. She tugged on my hand and glanced at Scorpius. I stuffed my book in my bag and threw it over my shoulder before walking out of the classroom with Lex.
She should have just let me skip that class.
Scorpius is an idiot. Rose is never going to fall madly in love with him if he keeps driving her crazy. I nodded my head and pretended to listen to Rose’s angry rant as we walked away from the potions room.
“You’re not listening to me.” Rose stopped walking and put her hands on her hips.
I smiled brightly at her. “I’ve heard it all before.”
She stuck out her bottom lip and pouted at me. I laughed at her childish behavior. “You’re such a little kid.” I told her and hugged her.
She laughed too and hugged me back happily. She could never stay angry at me. I can calm her down when nobody else can. I think it’s because she’s so protective of me. I’m like the little sister she never had. She’s like my rock. She takes care of me and makes sure nobody hurts me. I know she will always be there for me when I need her.
“I like being a little kid. It means I have an excuse for being immature.” She smiled happily at me and pulled the rubber band out of her hair so she could redo it.
Rose has wildly curly hair and she hates it but I think it’s beautiful. I love her tight red spiral curls. They fall to her lower back almost to her waist. She hates having so much hair but she doesn’t want to cut it because it would just get curlier so she keeps it long.
She is so pretty, way prettier than I could ever dream of being but she still insists that I’m more beautiful than her. I don’t believe her. I think she says that just to make me feel better. I’m not beautiful at all. I wish I had Rose’s curly bright red hair and light chocolate brown eyes. I wish I had her courage. I have no idea why the sorting hat put me in Gryffindor when I have no courage. I don’t know what the hat was thinking. I don’t belong in Gryffindor; I’ll never be brave enough.
Rose says the sorting hat put me in Gryffindor because of my loyalty but I think she’s also just saying that to make me feel good.
I rolled my eyes at Rose and laughed. She always knew how to make me laugh. She had a way of knowing exactly what I needed to feel better. She knew when I needed to be alone and when I needed someone there to hold me while I cry. I don’t know how, she just knows.
“I’m never going back to that class again.” Rose stated.
She said that after every potions class but she always came back even if I had to drag her there. She loves potions too much to miss it even if that means being partners with Scorpius. He was completely clueless on how to win a girl’s heart. If he wanted Rose to fall for him he had to learn what not to do and I would have to teach him. They are so obviously perfect for each other it makes me want to shake Rose and scream at her until she sees it too. She’s too stubborn for her own good. She’s going to wake up one day and realize she loves him but by then it’ll be too late. He will have given up on her by then if I let her figure it out for herself. I need to teach Scorpius how to make Rose fall for her. No one knows Rose better than me. If Scorpius wants Rose to fall in love with him he’s going to need my help.
I sat silently in the shadows near the Slytherin common room. Nobody saw me; I was good at being invisible. After Rose was done ranting to me I made up an excuse of going to the library to write my charms essay and went down to wait for Scorpius at the entrance to his common room. He needed my help. I had to get Rose and Scorpius together. They would be so happy together.
I saw Scorpius and Al turn the corner and walk slowly toward the common room. I quickly pushed myself off the floor and silently walked toward them. Al looked down at me in surprise when I stepped in front of them.
“What are you doing here Lex?” he asked. His eyebrows pulled together in confusion.
I ignored him and turned to Scorpius. “I need to talk to you.” I told him and grabbed his hand.
I tugged him down the corridor and into an unused classroom. I jumped up on a dusty old table and swung my legs back and forth. Scorpius stared at me in confusion. I had never really talked to him before. I was always trying to keep Rose from killing him.
“You love Rose,” I stated simply.
His mouth fell open and he stared at me in shock. He opened and closed his mouth several times as he searched for the right words. He looked like a goldfish.
“Why would you think that?” he finally asked.
I laughed and rolled my eyes. “Don’t try to deny it; you don’t do a very good job of hiding it.”
He sighed and ran his hand through his hair in frustration. He sat down on the table across from me and stared at the floor.
“I’m that obvious?” he asked.
I nodded and smiled brightly. “Everyone but Rose knows. She refuses to accept that she’s desperately in love with you.”
His head snapped up and he stared at me. “She loves me?”
I nodded. “She just doesn’t know it yet.”
“How do you know that she loves me?”
I rolled my eyes. “She’s my best friend; it’s my job to know these things.”
He stared at me in shock and then smiled. “I knew she loved me. I told Al she’d fall for me eventually.”
I shook my head. “She doesn’t know she loves you yet and you’re not helping that.”
“What do you mean?” he asked. Does he honestly not know?
“You drive her crazy.” I drew a heart in the dust on the table. “She will never realize how much she loves you if you annoy her to death.”
He sighed and smiled slightly. “I can’t help it. She’s so beautiful when she’s angry.”
I rolled my eyes. “If you want her to fall for you you’re going to need my help. You have no idea how to win her over but I do. I know Rose.”
“You’re going to help me?” he asked. I nodded. “Why?”
“Because you two belong together. Rose is too stubborn to believe it and you don’t have a clue how to make her see that she does.” I told him.
I drew another heart and stuck my hair in my mouth.
“Leave her alone. She likes the attention you give her even though she won’t admit it. Ignore her. She’ll be happy at first that you’re finally leaving her alone but eventually she’ll see how much she misses it.”
“You want me to leave her alone.” He said slowly. He stared at me like I was crazy.
I rolled my eyes. “If you want her to love you, you need to listen to me. I’m your only chance at getting the girl of your dreams.”
He ran his hand through his hair again. He really loved Rose.
“You should also get a girlfriend.” I told him.
I watched my feet swing back and forth and tilted my head to the side. “It’ll make her jealous.”
He was silent for several minutes. “Who should I date?” he asked.
I shrugged. “Someone that will make her really jealous.”
“Someone like you?”
I snapped my head up to stare at him with wide eyes. “Me?” Rose would kill me.
He smirked and nodded. “It would make Rose really jealous if I was dating her best friend.”
“Or it could make her kill you or me.”
It was a good idea. Rose would be really mad and jealous. She might hate me though. I don’t want her to hate me.
“Okay,” I said quietly. “I’ll be your girlfriend.”
He laughed and smiled. “Thanks Lex.” He said seriously.
I smiled. “Rose deserves to be happy and I know you will make her happy.”
Neither of us said anything. We were lost in our thoughts. I was officially dating Scorpius Malfoy, my best friend’s enemy. What had I gotten myself into?
