The loud pop that came from his living room made James groan and as he turned to greet his guest, he cursed whoever it was for having such unbelievably bad timing.
Of course it was his best friend, Sirius Black. Sirius had a bad habit of interrupting Lily and James during their most pivotal moments. The first time they tried to make love, Sirius had stumbled in pissed as a fart and immediately started laughing at the two. The first time James had tried to propose, Sirius had appeared to show them the stupid motorbike he’d bought and was planning to curse into flying. Now this.
James was beginning to think he did it deliberately.
“James, mate you there?” Sirius called just as James entered the small living room.
“Sirius, we’re kind of in the middle of something...” he started but Sirius held up a hand to stop him.
“Dumbledore wants us to go on a mission tonight. There’s been some trouble somewhere in Scotland, wants us to go check it out.”
James was torn. Any other time he would’ve been happy to do his bit for the order but not now; not tonight. He cast a glance toward the bathroom where his wife had just closed the door behind her.
“What is it?” Lily asked. She was pale but there was something about her that Sirius couldn’t define. She seemed different somehow. They both did.
“We need to go on a mission.” Sirius explained again for Lily. Lily and James looked at each other.
“I’m not going...” he started but again Sirius interrupted.
“What do you mean you’re not going? This is a bit more important than a night in shagging, Prongs,” He meant it as a joke, but he was tired and it came out more abrupt than he had hoped.
“We’re not...” James sighed, frustrated. He looked at Lily again pain evident in his eyes and the husband and wife shared a silent conversation. Sirius began to worry. Something was wrong.
“What is it?” he asked, eyeing the two suspiciously.
“It’s Sirius... we can trust him,” Lily said quietly to her husband. James held his breath a second before turning to his friend.
“Mate... we think... Lily thinks...”
“I think I’m pregnant.” Lily announced, saving James from his stumbled explanation. A weak smile appeared on James face. His eyes twinkled slightly though there was worry behind them also.
Sirius’ heart skipped a beat. He opened his mouth to say something but Lily continued talking.
“We’ve been... suspicious for a few weeks now. But we didn’t want to tell anyone until it was absolutely definite.” She said. Sirius now knew what was different about her. Under her weariness she was glowing in only the way that a new mother could.
“She’s just done a muggle test. If it comes out positive we’re going to St Mungo’s tonight to have it confirmed.” James told his friend.
Stepping closer to his wife and wrapped an arm around her waist.
“Well this is good news isn’t it?” Sirius wanted to rejoice for them, but something in the air told him that all wasn’t right. He didn’t understand.
James shrugged, “We’re not sure. We didn’t really plan it, it just sort of happened and...”
“...and these are bad times to bring a baby into the world. We’re scared.” Lily confessed. Sirius couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
The two people in front of him were the two people he regarded most in the world. They had suffered enough throughout the last few years and he couldn’t think of two people more deserving of this happiness than Lily and James.
“Guys, you should be happy. This is good news.” He smiled, stepping toward them. “If there is a little Prongs in there then they are a miracle, not something to be scared of. There’s too much fear in the world.” Lily wrapped her arms around her friend and held him tightly.
“Thank you,” she pulled away from him, “we don’t even know for sure yet. We’ll know by tonight.”
Sirius made a decision. Sod the mission, someone else could go. He knew he was needed here. James would support Lily and Sirius would support James, that’s how it was and how it would always be.
“I’m staying with you, let me go spin something to Albus and I’ll be right back.” He vanished with a pop.
Lily checked her watch. Not long to go now. She wrapped her arms around herself and looked at her husband. They didn’t need to speak.
They just looked at each other, a mixture of hope, happiness and unease floating between the two.
Sirius was back minutes later, “right is it time?”
Lily nodded and made her way to the bathroom.
Sirius regarded James, “How are you really feeling?”
James was silent for a moment though a small smile spread over his face, “Of course I’ll be happy if she is. I’m just scared. The thought I might lose her is bad enough...” he didn’t need to say anymore. Sirius understood more than most the danger they were all in. Blood traitors and ‘mud bloods’ were vulnerable in these dark times. That meant Lily and James and their little family.
“You’ll be a fantastic dad, James.” Sirius said honestly, clapping a hand on his friends shoulder.
James’ smile grew and he looked at his friend. “God, I’ll be a dad. How weird is that?” he laughed. Sirius grinned as Lily re-entered the room a little white stick in her hands.
She looked at James, obviously trying to hide her excitement, “We need to go to St. Mungo’s.”
James and Sirius sat in the waiting room of St Mungo’s. James knee hadn’t stopped twitching the entire time since they’ve arrived but Sirius hardly noticed. He was consumed with thoughts of his friend becoming a father. He didn’t think he could’ve been more excited if it had been his own wife; his own child.
“Sirius,” James began suddenly, pulling Sirius from his thoughts, “What if something happens?”
“Nothing’s going to happen...” Sirius immediately began but a look from James silenced him. His friend was more scared than Sirius had ever seen him.
“Will you promise me something?” Sirius nodded, “Will you look after them for me?”
“Sirius... Please...” James eyes pleaded with his friend.
Sirius nodded again, “Of course I will. But...but it won’t come to that!”
James just turned away, satisfied with Sirius’ promise to him.
Lily emerged through the double doors of the room after a while of silence and James looked up expectantly. There was no denying this time the joy on Lily’s face. James stood up and she threw herself into his arms.
“I’m pregnant! We’re having a baby!” She cried into James shoulder.
Sirius was standing now also, beaming at his friends. James pulled away from his wife, holding her at arm length and looking into her eyes.
“Definitely?” He asked, to which she just nodded the tears flowing freely down her cheeks now. James beamed, pulled her to him again and turned so they were both looking at Sirius.
“Oh my god...” he breathed, “I’m going to be a dad.” He kissed his wife as the young couple allowed themselves a moment of happiness for now. Now was not the time to worry, now was the time to be happy.
