Chapter 5 : Three's a Crowd

Background: Font color:
Slowly, slowly, almost open…
“Closing your eye’s won’t make us disappear you know.” I hear James say sounding amused but annoyed.
My eyes open in a flash to see a roomful of glares. James, Mitch, Justin, Arianna, Erin, Harmony, Lily, Albus, Fred, and Madison. How wonderful.
“Where have you been!? Its bloody two in the morning!”
“Why were you outside so late?! You could have caught a cold!”
“Are you crazy red? You were gone for hours!”
Everyone is talking at once and I don’t know who’s saying what. Though I’m going to take a guess that the comment about catching a cold came from Harmony. How do they except me to answer when they are all shouting?!
“QUIET!” I scream in an attempt to make them stop. Oh damn I probably just woke up the whole Gryffindor house.
They all stop yelling and wait for me to say something else. When I don’t, Mitch decides to talk.
“Rose, why were you gone so long? You said you were only going to stay out a little while longer, and that was hours ago. Everyone was worried about you. We were minutes away from sending out a search party.” He say’s the last part with a bit of humor in his voice, but I wouldn’t put it past my over-protective cousins to do just that.
They have a tendency to go a little over-board, but I still feel really awful for staying out so long. I shouldn’t have done that, I hate making people worry.
“I’m so sorry guys, honestly. I just needed to get outside to cool off from my outburst at dinner. James upset me, but that was no excuse for my actions. I didn’t say out late on purpose. When Mitch came I started to feel a lot better.” More like when Scorpius came. “So I decided it was time to back come in the castle. But the stars looked so amazing and I just got distracted.”
I stop speaking for a moment, but they’re all giving me that ‘go on…’ face, so apparently that wasn’t a good enough excuse.
“I had hardly gotten any sleep last night, so my exhaustion got the best of me and I dozed off. I woke up at about 12:30, and I tried to get in the castle, but all the doors I could find were locked. Eventually, I found a door that Filch hadn’t put all the enchantments on and I got in. But of course, just my luck, Filch himself was roaming the halls with that devil cat of his. So it took me forever to get to the common room.”
Wow I didn’t know I was capable of telling so many lies at one time. But it’s believable enough, and a lot more appealing than saying the truth.
“Rose.” James says in an angry tone. “Don’t ever scare us like that again, falling asleep outside is so dumb. Your ginger hair was probably noticed all the way in the middle of the forest, you’re lucky you didn’t get eaten.” He says with a smile and I know I’m forgiven.
He steps forward to give me a hug and there’s a silent, mutual agreement that everything that happened at dinner, as well as tonight, is behind us.
I turn to face to rest of them.
“You guys forgive me right? I feel dreadful about worrying you.” Well not that dreadful, considering how wonderful it had been, but they don’t need to know that.
“Of course we do Rosie.” Mitch says with a smile.
“Yeah, we’re just glad your safe.” Madison adds.
“Yeah yeah yeah, blah blah blah. Rose is safe, all is forgiven. Now can we please go to bed?” Arianna says teasingly.
But I can also tell that she legitimately wants to go to bed, which I think sounds like a great idea.
“Couldn’t have said it better myself.” Albus says, “I’m dead tired.”
“I think we all are. Lets go to bed. You guys have been up all night, and sleeping on the ground isn’t as restful as it sounds, so I wouldn’t mind some shut-eye.”
* * * *
I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. Before I knew it, I was up, starting my day.
I could tell Arianna and Erin wanted more information about last night, I guess they figured there is more to the story than I was letting on. Always the perceptive ones, those two…
But I just pretended not to notice their attempts, I’ll tell them when I’m ready. After all, there might not ever be anything to tell. That could have been a one time deal. Maybe Scorpius will wake up and wonder why he ever talked to a Weasley, then promptly go back to being a Malfoy and ignoring my existence. I don’t think that will happen, but just in case, I don’t want to get my hopes up.
My mind was on a lot of things, so the morning passed by with a blur. I had Herbology, then Transfiguration. Lunch came next, and now I have a double free period.
Luckily, (or unluckily depending on how you think about it) Madison, Erin, and Justin had the first free period with me. I only say that it was unlucky because I really wanted to go sleep, but my friends thought it would be a better use of my time to go outside, it was a lovely day and all.
So Erin, Madison, Justin, and I walked together to find a nice little spot under a tall oak tree. There’s just the right amount of shade, yet you can still feel the warmth of the sun without being too hot.
“It’s only the second Friday of the new term, and I already have a feeling I’m going to fail all my NEWT’s. It’s all so complicated!” Madison says, seeming quite frustrated as she plops angrily down in the grass.
“Oh surly not, you’re one of the brightest in our year Madison, not to mention one of the hottest.” Justin says with a sly smile, taking a seat next to her.
“Always the charmer Justin.” She says laughing, a sparkle in her eye. “But I’m definitely not the smartest, we got our potion assignments back today, and I barely passed with an Acceptable. Though, I’m not going to deny the hot comment.” Madison laughs and I playfully hit her.
“I though I was the hot one?” I say with heavy sarcasm, pfff as if.
Erin hits both of us, “You wish, you foolish girls. We all know I’m most gorgeous!”
Justin lets out a low, rusty, laugh that’s actually pretty sexy for a laugh. “Ladies, ladies, ladies. Don’t worry, in my eyes, you’re all smoking.”
“Are you just saying that because you mean it, or because you want to copy my charms essay?” Madison inquires.
He puts his hand over his heart and has a look of mock horror, “Of course it’s true! What kind of guy to do you think I am?”
We all give him skeptical glares; He sure is laying it on thick.
“Oh alright, I do want to copy your essay.” He gives her a guilty smile, widening his eyes like a little puppy, and bats his eyelashes. “Pretty pleaasee?”
She tries to resist, but we all can’t help but laugh at his expression.
“Okay fine!” She bursts into laughter, reaches into her bag, and hands him the essay.
“You’re a life safer, truly a saint. And even though I wanted the essay, I wasn’t lying when I said you all were pretty. But you don’t need me to say that, it’s obvious you’re beautiful.” He gives us all a genuine smile. I swear this boy must take a charming potion every morning.
“Sure, whatever you say. Now enough with the flattery. Anyone got any interesting news?” Madison tries to make it seem like she doesn’t enjoy Justin’s compliments, but I know she secretly loves it. I have a feeling she may fancy him, but I haven’t asked her about it.
We talk for awhile about random things. Apparently a Slytherin accused Danny and Nate of helping each other cheat on a pop quiz in transfiguration. The git even did the whole “liar, liar, pants on fire” bit when they tried to deny it. So naturally, Danny set said Slytherin’s pants on fire as revenge shouting, “Who‘s the liar now!”
I knew there was a reason I liked that kid.
Anyway, today was turning out to be better than I thought it would, and I was in a great mood till Justin had to ruin it.
“Oh guess what Rosie, you won’t be lonely in detention tonight.”
Gulp, what’s the supposed to mean? I know I’m pretty pale already, being a ginger and all, but I think I just got even paler.
“Huh? Why is that?” I’m trying way too hard to make my voice casual, so instead of sounding like a normal person, my voice is about three octaves higher and kind of squeaky when I talk. Way to play it cool.
“James sent a hex at a Slytherin that was walking down the corridor and he got busted by Professor Cassot. So you’ll have him to keep you company!” He smiles like this should be good news to me.
“WHAT?!” I shout, causing him to nearly jump a foot in the air.
“Whoa, calm down, I thought this would please you? That way you won’t be so bored, you know James always makes things interesting.”
Oh, things will be interesting alright Justin.
* * * *
Of course it normally would make me happy to have a detention with James, but I don’t think that will be the case tonight. James, Scorpius, and me all in one detention could not possible turn out be anything good. Not good at all.
Contemplating these thoughts, I wait inside Professor Cassot’s room, dreading the arrival of James and/or Scorpius. I got there early, so if Scorpius gets here first I’ll be able explain to him that James will be joining our detention.
I hear the rattling of the door knob turning and I feel my muscles tighten. The door opens and I see Scorpius come in through the door with a dazzling smile. He looks even better than I remembered. How is that possible?
“Hey Weasley, ready for a fun filled evening? I’m sure Professor has some lovely activities in mind for us.” He smirks, his laughter echoing in the classroom.
“Hey Scorp, well the thing is, we have a bit of a problem.” More like a big problem.
“And what would that be?” He questions, his eyebrows furrowing in an adorably confused way.
“We won’t be the only ones in detention tonight, Ja-” Before I can finish my sentence the door bangs open and James struts in, giving me a big smile.
“Fancy meeting you here cousin.” His smile turns to a frown upon seeing Scorpius.
“Oh, I’m not interrupting am I? Hopefully you were about to hex that git,” He lazily points towards Scorpius. “and if not, may I?”
“You weren’t interrupting, turns out Malfoy is in detention with us tonight as well. You might not want to hex him though, I don’t think Professor will be too pleased.” I’m doing my best to talk about Scorpius in a nonchalant way, but it’s proving to be difficult.
“Hmm, very true cousin. Well come over this way, if you stand too close some of his Slytherin slime might get on you.” He laughs and gestures me over.
I see Scorpius fist tighten, and I want to defend him, but all I can do is shoot him an apologetic look before walking over to James.
“Oh don’t worry Potter, I would never get my “slim” on her, or you. I wouldn’t want to upset you, I mean you‘re probably still in shock from actually having to serve a detention.” His tone becomes slightly menacing, I wouldn’t want to be on his bad side.
“And what is that supposed to mean Malfoy?” James spits back with equal venom, oh god I wouldn’t want to cross him either.
“We all know you mooch off your father’s fame. You think you can do anything you want with no consequences. After all, no one would hurt or punish a precious Potter in fear of upsetting the great Harry Potter himself.”
“Ha, you think so Malfoy?” He’s voice remains angry, but I know those words cut him deep.
He never liked the special treatment being a Potter gave him, and I’m sure he’d prefer that his dad wasn’t so famous. People expect so much of him, so he’s always looking for ways to prove himself worthy of being his father’s son.
“That’s exactly what I think.” Scorpius sounds disgusted with James, and right then I hate him for saying those things to him. But at the same time, James was the one who started the fight in the first place. So who’s the good guy, and who’s the bad guy in this one?
“Well then, it’s a good thing I don’t give a damn about you or your thoughts.” He walks toward Scorpius so he can get up in his face.
“And if there’s anyone with daddy issues, it’s you Malfoy. I mean, how do you live with the fact that your father is a low life, death-eater wannabe? Oh and he attempted a murder from time to time. You must be so proud.”
They exchange a look of pure loathing and both pull out their wands. I rush into the narrow space that separates them, trying to push them apart, but if I haven’t already mentioned they are a lot stronger and bigger than me.
“Stop it! Please! I’m begging you, don’t do something you’ll regret. Just put your wand away, for me.” I’m not sure if this is directed towards James or Scorpius. Maybe I’m saying it both of them, it doesn’t really matter as long as they stop.
“Out of the way Rose, this is between me and him, you just stay out of it.” James easily brushes me to the side.
“Hey, don’t push her!” Scorpius shout’s angrily, then proceeds to push James rather roughly. “Pick on someone your own size.”
“With pleasure,” James says sadistically, raising his wand to cast a spell on Scorpius. Just as the curse is about to leave his lips, the door opens.
Professor Cassot has entered the building.
“Put down your wand this instant Mr. Potter! I will not allow you to duel Mr. Malfoy in my classroom. Now take a seat.” Professor’s words are ice cold with a distinctive ring of authority.
“But Proff-” James tries to defend himself.
“No buts. Now sit.” Instead of arguing, James sits down. Scorpius and I take our seats as well, we don’t want to face Cassot’s wrath.
“Seeing as you two obviously can’t be trusted alone, I think it would be in your best interest if I separated you. Mr. Potter will join Ms. Weasley in polishing the trophies on the left side of the room, while Mr. Malfoy will sort through the various awards and put them in the correct order on the far right side of the room. I will be taking your wands, and you will not so much as speak a word to each other. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes Professor.” We reply in unison.
“Good, now let’s get to the trophy room. You have a lot of work to do.”
* * * *
Scrubbing trophies for two hours straight without magic is even more awful that it sounds (and it sounds pretty damn awful.) Professor had his eyes on us like a hawk, and even the slightest of sounds would make him angry, so we had to keep quiet.
Finally, after what felt like forever, he had to leave to go to go handle Peeves. According to Sir Nicholas, Peeves had done something awful things involving Bubotubers puss, dung bombs, feathers, and Filch’s cat.
“I have to leave, but that doesn’t mean you can. Finish, and then you may go. I’ll inspect them tomorrow morning so I’ll know if you didn’t do your job.” Professor sure is feeling a tyrannical vibe today.
“Alright sir.” I answer quickly, sooner he leaves the better.
“Good. Now, goodbye students, have a nice night.” He closes the door and is gone.
“Finally! I thought that tight ass would never leave.” James lets out a sigh, “Too bad we still have about an hour of work ahead of us.”
“I know right! Well at least we can talk now.” It’s pretty difficult for a Weasley to go any extended period of time without talking (me in particular).
“Very true cousin, very true.” He says with a smile and we begin to chat.
James likes to tell long winded stories that usually only require a few nods here and there to make it seem like your listening, so during one of said stories I decided to steal a few glances at Scorpius.
There he was, the sleeves of his white button-up pushed back to reveal his toned arms as he scrubbed trophies. (Organizing the awards took less time that professor thought so he had Scorpius start cleaning trophies as well). I want to go over there and talk to him so badly, but after his and James fight, he may not want to talk to me.
“Rose? Can I ask you a question?” James asks, bringing my attention back to him.
“Oh sure. Shoot.” I feel bad about not paying attention to him while he was talking, but he doesn’t seem to mind.
“Well, umm… doesErinfancyAidenCorwin?” He says the last bit in a rushed whisper and his cheeks turn the slightest shade of pink.
“Aiden Corwin? As in that bloke from Ravenclaw?”
He nods his head yes.
“I don’t believe so. I’ve never heard her mention him before. Why?”
He turns even pinker still; “Oh nothing. I just saw him chatting her up outside of herbology.” His expression becomes a little bitter and I can hear what I think to be jealousy in his voice.
“And what’s wrong with that? Not jealous are you?” I say with a smile, I had a feeling those too liked each other.
“Me? Jealous? No no. I just don’t like that boy, he seems shady. Not that kind of guy that should be around my friends. I would act this way no matter who he was talking to, in this case it just happened to be Erin.” He says, sounding pleased because he thinks he’s made a brilliant cover up. Not exactly cousin.
“Oh right. Of course.” I nod, saying it in a mocking way. In reality Aiden is a perfectly fine guy, so there’s no reason James wouldn’t want Erin talking to him (other than him being jealous of course.)
“Would you like for me to pass on the message? I should surely warn her of the danger that is Aiden Corwin!” I say with sincerity, oh am I good or what?
“No!” He practically shouts, causing Malfoy to look over at us briefly. “I mean, no, it’s fine. I was just making sure she didn’t fancy him. If he was just talking to her then I guess that’s alright. I still don’t trust him though.”
Sure James, whatever you say.
* * * *
“Finished! Yes!” James exclaimed loudly, causing me to jump slightly and spill my bucket of water all over the floor.
“Look what you made me do James! Now I’m going to have to stay even longer to clean up this mess.” Just what I need, more cleaning.
He notices the water everywhere and his smile droops into a semi-frown, “Oh sorry mate, I didn’t mean to. What me to stay and help you?”
Pshhh, he’s just saying that to be nice, he wants to get out of here just as much as I do.
“No that’s alright, you go ahead. It won’t take that long.” It better not at least.
James sighs in relief, “Okay, if you insist. See you around cuzz.” He then proceeds to ruffle my hair and flounce out of the trophy room. I hate my hair being ruffled and hate the word “cuz.” Of course, he’s fully aware of this, he just chooses to do so anyway. Gotta love family right?
Okay, back to the task at hand. Water all over floor; must clean up the water. Easy enough. Problem is, I don’t have any more towels and Professor still has my wand…
“I’ll take care of it.” Scorpius says, taking me by surprise, I had thought he already left. He takes out his wand and does a quick spell to get rid of the water. Much more efficient than the muggle way I must say. But his voice is off, not the usual tone he uses. It was colder.
“Wait a minute, Professor took our wands, how’d you get yours?” If I had had my wand, I could have finished ages ago.
He smirks that smirk I love, but when he talks his tone is still icy. “Nicked it from Cassot when he wasn’t looking, being a Malfoy has made me rather talented in the sneaking department.” I think I hear some humor in his voice as he says the last part, but I can’t be sure.
“Oh I see. Did you happen to grab my wand as well?” I don’t feel right without having my wand, it’s like if losing one of your arms or something. Okay not really, but you get the idea.
Scorpius nods and hands my wand to me without a word. I mumble a thank you. Things remain awkwardly quiet for awhile until I speak.
“What’s wrong, you’re acting different than you normally do?”
“It’s nothing.” I wait for him to say more, but he doesn’t.
Really, that’s all I get? A lousy ‘nothing’?
“Are you sure? Because if you’re upset about the fight between you and James, then-” Before I can finish I’m cut off.
“I don’t think we should go to Hogsmede together tomorrow after all.” He blurts out, causing me to be taken aback.
“Ww-why?” I stutter out, sounding foolish. I know it shouldn’t bother me so much, but it felt kind of like a punch in the gut. Weird.
“Well, umm I promised Tony I’d help him with potions, he’s having a bit of trouble.” Scorpius’s eyes remain firmly on the ground, not meeting my gaze. A clear sign he’s lying; but I pretend not to notice.
“Oh, I see. Wouldn’t want to let down your best mate right?” I say with a detached tone, it’s hard to sound genuine when you’re completely disappointed.
“Right.” He says, eyes still down on his feet.
Some more awkward silence follows till, once again, I break it by speaking.
“I think I should be heading off to bed, goodnight Scorpius.” He merely nods, his expression blank.
I hustle out of the classroom, afraid I might breakdown due to his weird behavior towards me. I guess I should have known he wouldn’t want to spend the first hogsmede trip with me. Hind sight being 20/20, this shouldn’t be a shock at all. But it still hurts.
A long period of time passes before I finally speak.
“Goodnight Rosie, I’m sorry I let you down.”
If Rose had been there, she would have asked me why I thought I let her down. But she never heard me say those words, she was already gone.
* * * *
I wake up the next morning in a bad mood. I mean one second Scorpius is all like “Hey, let’s be friends! Come on it will be great!” The next second he’s all weird, cancelling our plans. Like WTW (what the warlock) is going on here?
“Yoo biotcchh, wake up. I need my morning toast and coffee ASAP.” Erin say’s while opening the curtains around my four-poster. Well at least I think it’s her, it’s so bright now that I can’t seem to open my eyes properly.
“Bloody hell. Close. The. Damn. Curtains. Bright light. Burns eyes.” I say sleepily, people should know I don’t wake up before noon unless its completely necessary.
“Aren’t you charming in the morning? Now get up! Times a’ wasting!” Her tone is so happy. I hate happy people.
(Okay so I don’t hate them per say, but they can really get on my nerves when I’ve just woken up.)
Five minutes of obnoxious foot tapping later I was out of bed, unwillingly I might add.
Soon we were down in the Great Hall. Arianna, Harmony, Madison, Charlie, and Kyle are already there eating breakfast. Of course James and Justin aren’t up yet, they make me seem like an early riser. The aroma of bacon and eggs fills my nostrils. Suddenly I’m rather happy I came down early. Food is good. Very good.
I’ve been told by many that I’ve inherited my fathers appetite, which is fine by me. Though it can be annoying when all your best friends are size 0 and you’re not. Not that I’m fat, but I wouldn’t consider myself skinny. Like I said, food is too good. Plus I’ve got bigger boobs, so ha.
Before I can do anything though, I need my coffee. I grab a steamy cup, ahh nothing like a caffeine boost. Black of course. Always straight black, it gives it more of a punch.
“Good to see you alive Rose, you gave everyone a scare the other night.” Charlie says as I take another sip, bits of food falling out of his mouth. Boys never grasp the ‘don’t talk with your mouth full’ rule.
“Oh yes, I’m sure you were terribly frightened for my safety.” I say teasingly, throwing a bit of toast at his head. “If you were so scared, how come you didn’t wait up with the rest of them?”
“Well I was sleepy, and I figured if you didn’t come back they’d find your body eventually. So why lose sleep over it?” Charlie deadpanned, but the glint of humor in his eyes was evident.
“Oh, well that makes perfect sense. You’re logic is spot on. Why couldn’t the rest of my family think that way as well?” We all laugh, and enjoy the rest of our breakfast just chatting amongst ourselves.
I reach for a piece of bacon (yum) when none other than Scorpius Malfoy walks in through the doors of the great hall. Suddenly, I’m not so hungry anymore.
