“Hey everybody quiet down!” George hollered. Everyone calmed down and sat back down at the table. It was three o’clock in the morning and the entire family was gathered at the table except for the triplets, Harry, and Ginny.
“Now,” George continued. “Hermione, would you please tell us why you had us all meet up here so bloody early?”
“I called us all here because every single one of us cares for Ginny. I want to ask each and every one of us here who has seen her really and truly smile since she has returned.” Hermione said as she looked around the full table. Everyone sat in silence for a while, trying to think of a time they had seen Ginny smile in the last few days. “Exactly” Hermione continued. “It is plain to see that she needs to be reminded how to enjoy life again, and we are going to help her. First thing she needs is to get Mike out of her life.”
The next morning when Katie walked into the kitchen she saw Mike sitting there, eating a bowl of soup. She actually smiled when she saw him, but it was not a sweet and innocent smile, it was a mischievous smile, anyone who knew her at all knew to stay alert when she smiled like that. But this time, most of the family was in on this scheme.
“Hi Mike.” Katie said as she sat down across the table from him.
“Hello Katie, it is good to see your smiling face.” Mike said with a cheeriness that made Katie sick. She couldn’t stand to pretend to be civil to him any longer, it was time to put the plan into action.
“Hey Mike, you haven’t seen my wand anywhere, have you? I seem to have misplaced it somewhere.” Katie knew how much Mike hated it when she would lose things, which tended to happen a lot.
“WHAT? How many times do I have to tell you to keep track of your things and stop losing them?” Mike said as his voice quickly got louder and his face became redder by the second.
“Ginny, we need to talk.”
Ginny turned around when Harry approached her. She had been sitting in the garden tending to her mother’s petunias.
“Okay, what do you want to talk about?” Ginny asked cautiously, she recognized that look in Harry’s eyes and knew he was not happy.
“Mike.” Harry said sternly.
“Oh,” Ginny said before turning back to the flowers. She knew this conversation was not going to go well.
Harry took that as a signal to continue, “Look, now that I know about Katie and Walter I think I deserve a say in what is best for them and Mike is not what is best for them.”
“Oh really? And how would you know that?” Ginny asked as she stood up and put her hands on her hips.
“Because yesterday when I ran into the three of them in the backyard it was obvious that Katie was greatly upset about something.” Harry retorted.
“Katie gets upset easily, she is an emotional young girl.” Ginny dismissed it with a wave of her hand.
“It was more than her just being emotional.” Harry was starting to get angry at Ginny now, how could she just stand there and not see the problem before her? “She was very upset and Walter refused to tell me why. There is something going on there that they are not telling us about but that does not mean that we can ignore it!”
“Harry, Mike helped me raise those two from the moment they were born, he has nothing but their best interests in mind.”
“Aunt Ginny!” Chloe came racing around the corner of the burrow with a terrified look on her face. “Aunt Ginny! Aunt Ginny!” She repeated again until she reached Ginny’s outstretched arms.
Ginny looked down at Bill’s youngest daughter and could tell that something had obviously upset her.
“Chloe, what’s wrong?” She asked the young girl as she pushed some of Chloe’s incredibly blonde hair out of her face.
“It’s that Mick guy”
“Mike, honey.” Ginny interrupted, she did not want Katie’s bad mood to affect the way her nieces and nephews viewed their future uncle.
“Yeah him. Well he and Katie are arguing and he looks real mad. He looks really scary.” Chloe finished before bursting into tears, she had been chosen by the family to be the one to get Ginny because she could cry on cue.
Ginny looked up at Harry who looked fit to kill before he turned his back on Ginny and took of towards the burrow at as fast of a walk as he could manage.
“Why don’t you do me a huge favor and water the flowers for me.” Ginny told Chloe before taking off at a jog after Harry.
“Harry, promise me you will not lose your temper.” Ginny said as she fell into step with him.
“How can you still defend this guy? He is arguing with your daughter so much that he terrified Chloe.” Harry was trying his best to keep his voice level.
Before Ginny could respond they entered the kitchen and met a sight that neither one was expecting. Mike and Katie were standing on opposite sides of the table, both of their faces bright red. Katie was clenching her fists at her sides and Mike had a death grip on the edge of the table as he leaned over it slightly. Neither one noticed the arrival of Harry and Ginny.
“You are such an irresponsible child it is a wonder you manage to keep your head attached to your body!” Mike spat at Katie.
“At least I don’t have to put down young children just to make myself feel better. At least I don’t shove and push around those smaller than me because I am so bloody insecure with myself that that is the only way to make myself feel important!”
Mike apparently had had it since he stood up straight and started to march around the table towards Katie. “I’ll show you who is insecure or not.”
“MICHAEL!” Ginny suddenly shouted. Both Mike and Katie froze and turned to face Ginny. Her face was the same shade of red as her hair. Katie had never seen her mother look so mad before. “What do you think you are doing?”
“Ginny, I can explain.” Mike began as he started to walk towards Ginny, his face was now back to its charming smile, it was impossible to tell that he had just been raging mad.
“No, no explanation is needed. Everything is perfectly clear.”
Mike’s charming smile was starting to falter but he was doing his best to keep it up. “What do you mean?”
“I mean that it is time for you to go.” Ginny said, “Now.” She added as she raised her right hand and pointed towards the door.
“You don’t want to do that Ginny. This is not what it looks like.” Mike said as he took another step towards Ginny.
“I believe she told you to leave.” Harry said in a very firm voice.
“What, you are leaving me for Potter? This pathetic sad sack has been? He is nothing but disappointment Ginny. I was there for your children while he hid out at some school. Don’t forget that he never came after you. He failed you as a lover, he failed you as a father, and he failed at his job. This guy is nothing more than a failure and he will bring you nothing but disappointments. You are making a big mistake.”
“Why you-” Harry said as he made to lunge at Mike.
“Harry no!” Ginny said as she held him back.
As everyone was paying attention to Harry Walter came from around the corner and punched Mike in the stomach causing Mike to double over.
“Don’t ever talk to my dad like that!” Walter said as he glared at Mike.
“Walter!” Ginny shouted. She was both mad and surprised. Walter had always been her timid little baby who would never hurt a flea.
“You will all be sorry.” Mike said as he turned to make his way towards the door. “You have no idea who you are dealing with.” And with that Mike left the Burrow.
After the door shut Walter turned to face Harry and Ginny with a sheepish look on his face.
“Walter Thomas Weasley. I am very disappointed in you. Violence is never the answer, you know better than that.” Ginny said her stern motherly voice that made Walter look even more sheepish.
“But Dad was about the throttle him.” Walter pointed out.
“Yes, well your father had a temporary lapse of judgment because he was upset.” Ginny said as she gave Harry a stern look.
“Well I had a temporary lapse of judgment because I was very upset. He shouldn’t have said those lies about Dad.” Walter said. “I am sorry that I acted on impulse and let my emotions take control of me.”
“Thank you for apologizing Walter since you seem to be genuinely sorry and since you had a bad example-” here Ginny shot Harry a stern look “I’ll let you off with just a warning, but don’t you dare let me catch you doing anything like that again.”
“So can we go now?” Katie asked, speaking up for the first time since she noticed Ginny and Harry.
Ginny just nodded her head and Katie took off out the door, Walter hung back however.
“Mum, Dad, can I talk to you for a minute.” Walter asked a little timidly.
Harry beamed at being called Dad by Walter, every time he said that one small word it made Harry’s day.
“Sure, what do you want?” Ginny asked him.
“Um, well since I know who my father is and all would either of you two mind if I went by Potter now? I mean using the surname Taylor is out of the question now and there are so many Weasleys that there really is no need for another one.” Walter asked nervously.
Harry’s smile could not have been any bigger if he had tried, however, he was afraid to answer until he knew how Ginny would react.
“Of course we don’t mind sweetheart. Potter is your birth surname; you have every right to use it if you want to.” Ginny said with a soft smile.
“Thanks!” Walter said before going out the door to the backyard.
Harry turned to Ginny and even though he was happy about Walter he did not forget what Ginny had just gone through. “Are you okay?” He asked her.
“How did you know?” Ginny asked Harry without looking at him. “How did you know that Mike was like that when I had known him for years and had no idea?”
“You were just too close to him,” Harry consoled, “You needed an outsider to come in and observe the whole situation.”
“It’s just, I am their mother, I should of been able to tell that he was upsetting them that much, that he would go to such lengths.” Ginny finally looked up at Harry and in that instant he could see the hurt that she was trying to hold back. “Does that make me a terrible mother?”
“No, of course not.” Harry said as he quickly closed the gap between and wrapped his arms around Ginny’s slim figure. “You are a great mother. Those two kids look up to you so much.”
“I am just so scared Harry. With all of the things that have been happening recently I can feel Katie pulling away from me. I don’t want my baby girl to be leaving me so soon.” Ginny said with a sniffle as she buried her head into Harry’s chest.
“She’s just confused, that’s all.” Harry said as he gently stroked Ginny’s long red hair. He may still be upset with her for keeping their kids from him for so long, but he did not want to see her so upset. She had been through a lot in the past few days. “Everything will be okay.”
