Chapter 50: Youth of the Nation
Call me blind, but I didn't see it coming
Everybody was running
But I couldn't hear nothing...
When I came home, Sienna was hunched over the kitchen counter, her dark brows pulled together.
"Sienna?" I said, frowning.
"SHH!" she hissed, her entire face twisted in concentration.
Ali walked in, holding a teacup, and I looked at him for more explanation. "Oh, she's sewing!" he said cheerfully.
Sienna? Sewing? What the fuck?
"I've seen loads of weird shit going down," I said slowly, shaking my head. I walked around to stand next to Sienna, gazing down at her work - she hadn't even managed to get the thread on the needle. "But this is by far the most--"
"SHH!" Sienna shushed again, licking her lips nervously. "This... is... is..."
I hopped up on the counter, trying for once to fight the urge to say something.
"Stupid?" I offered helpfully.
Just as I said it, Sienna poked herself with the needle. "Shit!" she exclaimed, straightening up as she shoved her finger in her mouth. "You bitch!" she said accusingly, glaring daggers at me.
"Who, me?" I said innocently.
"UGH!" Sienna huffed, stomping away.
I peered more closely at the cross stitch work, and grinned. "What the hell? Did she honestly think she'd be able to do a cross stitch of Mona Lisa!?"
"Apparently so," Ali murmured, also peering down at the blank canvas.
"Stupid," I said again.
"So," Ali said conversationally after a short silence. "How's Sirius?"
I looked at Ali with raised eyebrows. "Okay, what are you--"
"SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSAN!" came dad's furious scream from the garage.
I guess he saw the car.
Sienna sprinted back to the kitchen, gasping for breath. "You're so screwed," she hissed menacingly, glaring at me like a madwoman.
"Oh, shove it, Sienna," I said in annoyance. I glanced at Ali, who was staring worriedly out through the window. "But just in case," I admitted, hopping down from the counter. "I was never here, okay?"
With that, I jogged out from the kitchen, and ambled towards the stairs. I was about to put my foot on the first step, when someone grabbed my hood, and pulled me back.
"Unnngh!" I managed to get out, twisting around to see who had almost pulled me on my arse. "Oh," I said dully, staring up at dad. "Hi."
"Susan," he said calmly, his eyes unreadable. "Care to explain why there is an enormous buckle on my new car?"
"Oh, you mean the red one in the garage?" I asked, playing for time.
"Yes," he said through gritted teeth, folding his arms. "There's a quite obvious buckle, and it would seem to be the result of a rather powerful swing with a Beater's bat."
"Oh, that!" I said, widening my eyes for more dramatic reaction. "Ah, yes! Now I remember!"
"You do?" he asked skeptically.
"I dropped the blasted bat, you know," I said vaguely.
"Drunken mishap, dad," I said calmly, shrugging once. "You know."
He stared at me for a long moment, calculating my face closely. "Very well... since it was an accident."
"It was, I swear," I lied with a serious face. "Can I go now?"
"Yes, sure," he said, still giving me an odd look. I turned on my heel, walking quickly up the stairs. I was halfway up, when dad called my name. I turned around and looked at him with raised eyebrows. "What were you doing down there, anyway? I thought Sirius Black was supposed to help you to your room."
"I was drunk," I said blankly, shrugging again. "He couldn't contain me."
This seemed to displease him. "Susie, you ought to go easy on--"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," I muttered, stomping up rest of the stairs.
"Owl me if anything happens, right?"
"And if you ever need to rant, you come to me, right?"
"You're already showing, so you might want to stop using tight clothes, hun, or, you know, start wearing a huge bow on your butt... to get the attention away from your stomach."
I looked down in dismay. "I'm not wearing tight clothes!"
Sienna snorted delicately, and linked her arm with mine. "Ha! Every girl wears--" she started, glancing at me quickly before closing her mouth. "On second thought, I don't think you even owe tight clothes, or anything close to girly clothes."
"Not to mention anything with a bow," Ali sighed from my other side.
"GAAH!" I called out, jumping away from Ali. "Where did you come from!?"
"I am a ninja," he said mysteriously, and I narrowed my eyes. "Actually, Sienna has trained me well to sneak up on people and take them by surprise. Oh, and congratulations are in order."
I turned around to glare at Sienna. "What?" I hissed.
"I might've told him," Sienna muttered, and coughed awkwardly.
"Everything ookie-dookie, Soo-zan?"
I glared stonily at Sienna, who moved closer to Ali. "Magnificent, mama," I growled, as mama and dad appeared behind me. "Abso-fuck--"
"SUSAN ANN QUENCY!" mama exclaimed, hitting me with her purse.
"OW!" I said, rubbing my head. "Domestic violence! Child abuse! Assault in a public place!"
"Shut your mouth, Susan, it is not very attractive to shout such profanities in a public place," mama said politely.
Oh fuck you, you...
I saw Sirius, James and Lily walk towards us, and I quickly looked back at my family. "I'm leaving," I said shortly, making a lame getsure ot escape.
"Not so fast, young lady," dad said, pulling me easily back from my hood. He embraced me in a huge hug, making me feel more nauseous than necessary. "Love you, Susie Q!" he said in my hair, as he finally put me back down.
"Yes," I managed to get out, staring up at him with an unreadable expression. I turned to hug mama awkwardly, the feeling of her slender arms around me slightly uncomfortable and formal. "You should tell him," I whispered in mama's ear, before she let go of me.
Mama gave me a piercing gaze, and I could tell she wanted to say something, but saw it better to shut up.
Probably for the best, too.
Not really, but... really.
I quickly hugged Sienna and Ali - hugging Ali was more awkward than hugging mama, since I didn't really know the bloke, but still, he was the best thing that could happen to my sister - before slowly walking towards my friends.
As I watched James and Lily stand hand in hand there, and Sirius waiting for me impatiently, a grin stretched on his handsome face, I felt more and more ill to the stomach. As I reached the others, I hardly even noticed Sirius kissing me swiftly.
"Hey," he said, nudging me gently. "What's going on up there?" he asked with a childishly put out look on his face, as he knocked my head.
I slapped his hand away, frowning darkly. "I need to... I... wait a minute," I said, and turned on my heel.
"Susie?" Sirius called, as I ran back to my family. "Susie!"
I cursed darkly, as I heard Sirius follow me. I threw myself at my dad, wrapping my arms around his neck, slightly disgusted by the fact that he had the nerve to hug me back like dad I once had known.
He wasn't my daddy anymore, I realized.
"I know what you did," I hissed, so that only dad could hear. "I know what you did to mama. I know about the affair. And so does mama!"
I felt dad's arms grow tense around me, as I slowly entangled myself. I pulled away enough to take a look at his face, and noticed his warm face had grown shocked and... sad, I suppose. I raised one eyebrow at him, before pushing myself away, and slowly backing away.
"Susie?" Sienna said, looking confused.
"Susan," mama simply said, her eyes wide.
And somehow, I knew she realized what I had said to dad.
"See you soon," I said to my family, feeling Sirius' hand gently touch mine. "Let's go..." I said, staring blindly ahead as we walked away.
"What was that about?" Sirius wanted to know.
"Nothing you need to think about," I sighed heavily. "Ooh, guess what I need? A bow!"
"A bow?" Sirius asked with a laugh.
"On my butt, to get the attention away from the bump," I whispered in his ear, as we reached James and Lily.
"Don't be stupid, Susie," he chuckled.
I laughed, but couldn't help but think about just how easily ruinable my family was.
"Yeah," I said dully, squeezing his hand. "Yeah..."
We walked hand in hand towards the Hogwarts Express.
I'm late, I'm late, I'm late, I AM FUCKING LATE!
I'm sorry, I can't help but think just how hilarious my jokes are... you know, 'I'm late'? As in, 'My periods are late, I'm pregnant, HELLO!'
I really need to get better jokes.
I tried to catch my breath, as I bolted down the corridor, trying to pull on my robes, as I balanced my books with one hand.
"Shit, fuck, shit, shit, FUCK!" I cursed, hopping around wildly.
I danced around, and collided with someone, stumbling back a few steps because of the impact. I blinked a few times, narrowing my eyes against the bright morning sun coming in through the window behind the person I had just collided with. As my eyes got used to the sudden brightness, I realised who it was; Remus Lupin.
"Lupin!" I said brightly, feeling a weird relief hit my chest. "What's up? I'm late!"
"Susie," he greeted dully, his shoulders slumped.
I frowned, biting my lip. "You look terrible," I pointed out.
I wanted to stab myself for that comment. Of course he looked terrible, I was the bitch who ruined his life, I pulled the rug from under his feet, I--
You got the point.
"How's... how are...?" I started lamely, shifting uncomfortably from one foot to the other. "Remus, I am so very sorry!" I blurted out.
Remus looked at me - his eyes actually looked at me now, not somewhere over my shoulder - and a small frown appeared on his forehead. "Sorry? What for?"
"It wasn't my place to tell!" I exclaimed, hanging my head. "I fucked up! I felt like shit, and I wnated everyone else to feel shitty with me! I am a shitty bitch!"
"Susie," Remus sighed, shaking me gently. "I'm glad you told me, seriously!"
I tried to focus my eyes on Remus, but it was difficult, considering that he was still shaking me. "W-what?" I managed to get out. Remus let go of me, and I shook my head to get my thoughts in order.
And to balance myself.
"It was right of you to let me know what was going on," he said.
"What? You... you're not mad that I ruined your life?"
"No," Remus said slowly. "I just wished it never would've happened. I mean, I trusted her, I loved her... still do, actually..."
I frowned. None of this made sense? What did 'trust' and 'love' have to do with anything?
"Erm, Remus?" I said, as Remus looked at me questioningly. "What are you talking about? The only thing you could've done differently was to show some support, be there for her!"
"You're telling me I should've been more understandable and supportive of what she did?" he asked with a skeptical look on his face.
I nodded. "Well, duhh? I mean, I'm no expert with these things, but surely--"
"No matter how much I love Val," Remus cut me off. "It won't justify for cheating, okay?"
"But she--" I started angrily, but fell silent as my brain took in his comment. "Wait, what--"
"I confronted Val about it," Remus said stiffly. "I asked if there was anything she wanted to tell me, and she just broke down. I asked if it was worth it, and she kept apologizing, and telling me I was never supposed to find out - but I did."
I was speechless.
I felt like laughing.
Gosh darn it, I really hate misunderstandings.
"Remus," I laughed, almost hysterically. "You--"
"I'm not mad at you," Remus said, already gesturing to leave. "Anyway, weren't you late?"
"Yes, but--" I said, glancing at my watch. "Oh, shit!"
"Bye, Susie," Remus called, as I darted off again.
I would deal with this shit later.
"Snivellus, you fucking idiot!" I roared, grabbing Snape's precious book he always scribbled in, and smacked him hard. "Didn't I tell you to shut up!?"
"Don't get violent, Quency!" Snape called back, trying to avoid the hits aimed at him - and failing.
"DON'T - TELL - ME - WHAT - TO - DO!" I said, smacking him over and over again.
"MISS QUENCY!" a voice roared. "Do I have to remove you from my class?"
"SHUT UP!" I roared back, only realising a little too late I had just raised my voice at Slughorn.
"Way to go, Susie," James muttered, as he leaned towards me from his seat.
"Shut up, Pothead!" I snapped, as Slughorn made his way towards us.
"Do you care to explain?" Slughorn asked, eyeing me and Snape suspiciously.
"Snivellus doesn't seem able to keep his mouth shut while I'm chopping frog's liver, and it pisses me off!" I retorted, folding my arms.
I heard Sirius snort from behind me.
"There's no need for foul language, Quency," Slughorn pointed out. "Snape, you shouldn't distract Miss Quency. Chopping liver is--"
"Frog's liver, sir," I cut off.
"Yes, yes, yes," Slughorn said quickly, waving it off with his hand. "It's rather difficult. Needs lots of concentration, and patience--"
"See, fuckhead?" I hissed to Snape, who glared back.
"I could do it in my sleep," he growled back.
"That would be the most disgusting thing I've imagined in my entire life," I said, looking childishly away.
As Slughorn walked away, telling the class about something that had once happened to him (what, like hundred years ago?), Snape leaned closer, his eyes blazing. "You pregnant with Black's bastard child is somewhat worse."
I froze, but didn't have time to react, before I saw a book flying right at Snape, hitting him right at the back of his head. It made a painful sound, as Snape's head bounced forward, and the book fell to the floor. I looked around to the direction where the book had come from, only to see Sirius stand there with a wild expression on his face.
"Sirius--" I started, as the entire class suddenly had their attention on us.
"He knows?" Sirius simply said, turning his furious glare to me.
I blinked a few times, and glanced at James' expression, and then I knew that he had heard Snape's comment, too.
I gave a simple nod, and Sirius weaved his way out from the class, not looking back. I looked around at Lily, who gave me confused look.
I was so fucked now.
And I could tell by the look on James' face that he had not seen that coming.
