Colin’s jaw hung open as the girls led him through the entrance hall and into the Great hall. “Wish I could have seen his face if he had come across the lake with the first years.” River laughed, Tara smirked and nodded as they entered the Great hall and made their way over to Gryffindor table. “Where do I sit?” Colin asked Aurelia. Aurelia looked up at him and frowned.
“If Dumbledore didn’t say anything than, I guess you can sit at Gryffindor table with us, until you are sorted.” She replied.
“What house do you want to be in?” Tara asked Colin, who looked down at her and smiled.
“I wouldn’t mind Gryffindor, to be with you lovely ladies. Or I wouldn’t mind Ravenclaw, for my studies, see I have to get the best marks or my parents will kill me.” he told her. Tara nodded and sat down as they reached the Gryffindor table.
“That sounds familiar.” She said, Colin grinned.
“Good evening and welcome.” Dumbledore’s voice rang out across the hall. “We have a few surprises for you today…”
Aurelia was momentarily distracted by River’s hushed whisper to her.
“He sounds like he’s running some sort of show or circus.” Aurelia nodded and turned her attention back to Dumbledore “…of a transfer seventh year student. But first, the first years.”
At that moment the hall doors opened and Professor McGonagall strode into the hall carrying the sorting hat and the three legged stool, upon which every first year student sat to be sorted. Placing the stool out the front and the hat upon it, the professor pulled out a long scroll of parchment and read the first name.
“Avens, Charlie” a small, mousey looking boy crept up to the stool and looked up at Professor McGonagall, who quietly explained what to do.
“Muggleborn.” River muttered to her, Aurelia nodded as she continued to watch as little Charlie Avens sat on the stool and the hat was placed on his head. All was silent for a moment until the hat burst forth with a…
“GRYFFINDOR!” The Gryffindor table erupted with cheers and whistles as the newest member of Gryffindor quickly ran down to the table and took a seat across from Aurelia and two seats up, next to Sirius Black. Aurelia watched as Sirius put an arm around the boy’s shoulders and started talking to him. “Poor child.” She heard Lily mutter to herself, before looking back up to the stool upon which a little girl was sitting, a moment later the hat yelled “RAVENCLAW!” and the girl went off to join her new friends.
Aurelia watched as “Carey, Carla” became a Hufflepuff and “Donovan, Serina” became a Slytherin followed by another Slytherin by the name of “Fergusson, Kevin” After that there was a blur of Hufflepuffs, Gryffindors, Ravenclaws and Slytherins, until, finally they reached the final student, a “Zycki, Yasmin” who became a Slytherin. After this, Dumbledore stood up and said loudly…
“Now our transfer student, O’Rory, Colin.”
“Good luck.” Aurelia whispered to her cousin as he stood up to make his way out the front. Colin flasher her one of his perfect grins and quickly jogged out to the stool. Aurelia giggled at how awkward Colin looked sitting on the tiny stool. Then glanced around the hall and saw that practically every girl in the school was staring at Colin and muttering approvingly to their friends. Turning her attention back to her cousin and the hat upon his head, Aurelia held her breath until the hat yelled out…
“RAVENCLAW!” The Ravenclaw table cheered loudly, especially the girls, as Colin gave the Hat back to McGonagall and made his way down the aisle between the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw tables. Ruffling Aurelia’s hair as he passed her, Colin found a spare seat at the Ravenclaw table and sat down as Dumbledore announced “Let the feast begin!” Several people cheered as the food appeared on the tables. “You look good like that.” Sirius’ voice cut into Aurelia’s thoughts. Aurelia looked up to see him grinning at her; she scowled at him and flattened her hair down.
“Is that your girlfriend?” Charlie Avens asked, looking up at Sirius.
Aurelia choked. Sirius laughed and replied “No, little man, she’s not. But I can tell, she so wants me!”
“Oh, okay.” Charlie replied nodding, and returned to his food. Aurelia glared at Sirius and said.
“I do NOT want you, Sirius Black!”
“Yes you do.” Sirius replied grinning at her, “Everybody wants me! Hell, even I want me!” Aurelia sighed exasperatedly and shook her head, turning to River, beside her. Blatantly ignoring Sirius, who she could see out of the corner of her eye, was still staring at her. What was his problem, why was he suddenly being all weird and annoying? He’d spoken to her more tonight than he usually did in a week. Something was up. He was planning something, probably one of his pranks with James, Remus and Peter.
After the feast, Aurelia and her friends went upstairs to the secret entrance to Gryffindor tower. “What’s the password this year Lils?” Tara asked Lily when they had reached the portrait of the fat lady. “Nymph” Lily replied. The fat lady smiled at them,
“Welcome back, girls.” She said as she swung open and let them in. River bounded over to her favorite chair by the fire and threw herself down in it. “Ah, home at last!” she cried. Aurelia smiled sympathetically, River’s family were purebloods and prided themselves on it. At home River was somewhat of an outcast as she had been put in Gryffindor instead of Slytherin like the rest of her family. She hated it at home and tried to spend as little time there as possible. “I know the feeling.” Sirius said to River as he sat opposite her in another large armchair. “But at least you can escape your family here; I still have to deal with Regulus.”
“True.” River replied nodding her head once. Aurelia sat on the armrest of River’s chair. “You have us, honey.” She said hugging her friend. Sirius tilted his head to the side. “What about me?” he asked, opening his arms to her and grinning. Aurelia rose an eyebrow slowly,
“You have…” she paused as Peter wandered over “…Peter.” Sirius dropped his arms and huffed hopelessly.
By now Tara and Lily had sat down and were reassuring River that no matter what happened she would always have them to be her family. “Oi! Prongs!” Sirius called as James came through the portrait hole with Remus. “Get your butt over here and promise to be my family forever! I feel unloved!” Lily gave Sirius a nasty look as James bounded over and knelt in front of Sirius. “Oh Sirius!” he said loudly. “I do solemnly swear that I, James Potter, will forever be your family in place of the horrid people to whom you are regretfully related!”
“Thank you!” Sirius cried dramatically, pressing the back of his hand to his forehead, like the women in the old muggle films, that Lily had made Aurelia watch the year before, do whenever they are scared, screaming or about to faint. Peter snickered and Remus rolled his eyes as he sat on the couch beside Lily. “Oh for crying out loud!” Tara said “Stop that before you insult someone!”
“It’s alright for you.” Sirius replied “You have a good family. They don’t care that you are in Gryffindor instead of the ‘real’ pureblood house. Or about the fact that one of your best friends is muggleborn.”
“No, they wanted me to be in Ravenclaw.” Tara replied hollowly. “But I get your point.”
“You know Sirius,” Aurelia replied “While Tara and I admittedly do have it better than you and River; we still cop heaps of crap from the Slytherins. You’re familiar with the term of ‘Bloodtraitor’.” Sirius nodded and Aurelia continued. “I personally couldn’t give a flying hippogriff’s ass what they say, but coming from a whole family of ‘Bloodtraitors’ doesn’t make you number one on the Slytherin’s friends list.”
“I know.” Sirius said “But I’d kill to have a family like yours.”
“Me too!” River said “Cause, Colin is HOTT!”
“Yah, Ew!” Aurelia replied “You’d be related!”
“It’s a pity he didn’t get into Gryffindor.” Tara said. Sirius however shook his head. James laughed and River said “And why is that Sirius? Because you’d have competition?”
“Uh…YAH!” Sirius replied loudly. “That boy is just to pretty. Gryffindor tower wouldn’t be big enough for the both of us!”
“Jealous are we?” Aurelia asked. Sirius grinned at her
“Never!” he replied. Aurelia was about to reply when the portrait hole opened and Professor McGonagall walked in and over to them. “Mr. Black, Miss O’Rory, Mr. Potter. Your Detentions will start tomorrow night in the Library. Eight o’clock, Do NOT be late!” With this she turned and walked back out of the portrait hole. Aurelia groaned and turned to River, Lily and Tara, “Any of you guys fancy getting a detention for tomorrow night to keep me company?” Lily looked as if she would rather die, Tara gave her an apologetic look and River laughed before replying “Sorry, got plans”
“Aww. I’ll keep you company, Aur.” Sirius said, giving her one of his signature lazy, arrogant smiles. Aurelia groaned and turned back to her friends. “I hate you guys.” She said helplessly.
“Well, I’m going to bed.” Lily said a moment later, getting to her feet.
“Yah, me too.” Aurelia added “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight sweetie.” Sirius replied as Aurelia walked past him on her way to the girl’s dormitory stairs. “I’m looking forward to our date tomorrow night!” Aurelia blinked, but kept her mouth shut. She would NOT take the bait. Walking up the stairs, she quickly opened the dorm door and stepped in behind Lily and shut the door. A millisecond later it opened again and River and Tara entered, both trying to hide grins of amusement. “What in the name of the gods is with him this year?” Aurelia demanded.
“I dunno, but it’s funny!” River burst out, giving up on trying to hide her grin.
“It’s not funny!” Aurelia replied, “It’s creepy! Is what it is!”
“I think it is just a typical display of Black’s self love.” Lily said seriously “He has made out with practically every girl in the school and now he’s trying to get one he hasn’t been able to before, it’s just an ego trip, that’s all.”
“He’s never touched any of us before.” Tara said “Why would he now?”
“Yeah” River agreed “It’s always seemed like we’ve been off limits before, what could have changed that?”
“We’re out of his league and he knows it.” Lily said “He’s just after an ego boost … not like he needs it.”
“I think it’s more like he thinks of us as his family and doesn’t want to ruin that, I mean we are in practically all of his classes.” River said.
“Whatever!” Aurelia interjected “Whatever it is going on, it’s creepy and it freaks me out!”
“Yeah, I so wouldn’t want to be you right now.” Lily said smirking.
“I wouldn’t want to be you ever.” Aurelia retorted “James has been after you for…how long now?” Lily squealed and threw a pillow at Aurelia.
“I do believe it has been five years.” River said before turning to Tara for confirmation. Tara looked at her watch then replied
“Oh, Um… Yes, going on about five years now!”
“What about River!” Lily cried in an attempt to change the subject. “How long has she liked Remus?”
“Three years.” Aurelia answered her. “By the way River, those plans of yours for tomorrow night, they wouldn’t happen to include sitting in the commonroom and watching Remus play chess would they?”
“And what if they do?” River asked. Aurelia hissed at her
“You’re leaving me alone with Sirius and James so you can watch Remus play chess with Peter!” River nodded. Aurelia groaned and threw herself backwards onto her bed. “Some friends I have…”
“You know you love us.” River replied as she got changed into her Pajamas and climbed into bed.
“Damnit!” Lily suddenly swore.
“What?” Aurelia asked, sitting up.
“I think my earring fell out down in the commonroom.” Lily replied.
“So go get it.” River said tonelessly. Lily sighed
“But Potter could still be down there, I don’t want to go by myself…Aur?”
Aurelia groaned and sat up. “Fine.” She said, “Look what I do for you!”
“Yah, But I can’t get a detention so early in the year, I’m a prefect.”
“I know.” Aurelia said as they walked down the stairs.
James was infact still down in the commonroom, only now, he had his shirt off. “Oh, come back have we?” he cried seeing them. “See Padfoot, when my shirt comes off the women come running.”
“We’re here for Lily’s earring.” Aurelia retorted “…and we’re not running.” She glanced at Lily who was purposely avoiding looking at James. She pushed Lily over to where her friend had been sitting and knelt down on the scarlet carpet and looked under the couch. “Here you are.” She said, picking up the silver heart shaped earring off the ground and handing it to Lily. “Thanks” the red head replied before they made their way back towards the stairs. “It’s okay.” Sirius’ voice floated up to them “We know you just couldn’t resist seeing us again.” Aurelia and Lily ignored this remark and continued up the stairs.
“I’m tired.” Aurelia said when they were back in their dorm. Lily nodded.
”Me too.” She said yawning. Aurelia then got changed into her Pajamas and slipped into bed. Pulling the hangings around her bed she listened to the sounds of Lily changing then getting into bed and Tara turning the pages of her book. Finally she gave in to the powers of sleep that were tugging at her and her eyes closed as she welcomed another year at Hogwarts.
